This short-lived comedy series (broadly a mixture of sketches and round-table discussion) appeared on Radio 4 in 1988, this first edition - originally broadcast as a pilot - featuring only the core cast. Jim Broadbent became a regular from programme 2 onwards and various guests, such as Ned Sherrin, Alison Steadman and Barry Cryer, also put in appearances over the course of the series.
Ten years later another series was broadcast, also hosted by Fry (but leaning more toward discussion than comedy).

    This is gold.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is entitled to their opinion but is utterly wrong.

It was also called Saturday Night Fry, yes; same title but somewhat different format, leaning more toward discussion than comedy, although comedy still featured.

I recall there was another Fry radio series in the 1990s, was it also Saturday Night Fry.

I'm not sure - but I remember that as well. It was on BBC Radio 4, in about 1997 or 1998. I think it was on Saturdays around 6:00 PM time. I think John Sessions appeared on it, as did Peregine Worsthorne. I think they discussed politics and so on.

Amazing to think Stephen Fry was unfunny and annoying even 31 years ago.....

Just going to say that I feel extremely sorry for you that you think that.

Christ this is weak. Some of it is downright painful.

Oh, it's great, an accurate parody of BBC radio 4 in the 80s.

its much better than todays stuff. some of those lines are so clever. "Hugh arent you forgetting something." "no...i dont think so Stephen" "Good. Good. I thought you may have done but I'm releived to learn you havent"

Just because it's too highbrow for you doesn't make it weak. It it an absolute tour de force of intellectual showing off. It took me many listens to actually get all the gags and call-backs. The episode where they all switched roles and then reprise them at the end of an unrelated skit it just genius. I'm sorry you can't appreciate the humour.
