Some time ago I saw a picture of one with the factory original wiring: all neat and clean, all structured. Today most of them have become a rat‘s nest of wires and components through the Years. Absolutely a pain in the ass 😀 So I had them repaired by someone who is able too see through the chaos and I agree - they sound fantastic. And why they are not as world famous as an Echoplex or a RE-201 is a mystery to me...
@@bandecho_de mine is pretty much factory original, except one of the filter caps, and the trim-pots. Here in Germany there are still some old techs who know those units from back in the day, especially ex-dynacord-techs,, because dynacrod bought klemt, and used to produce those for a bit longer under different brandings like "echochord". the coresponding amps like the Echolette M40 and M80 are also nice. If you need a shematic, pictures or a translation of the german-manual, hook me up.... I especially love how flexible those are: in a parallel-mix with kill-dry they can be crytal clean, but if you want to, you can have all that character from the preamp too....
Ha!
The Echolette NG51 and Dynacord Echocord are basically the same dimensions and echo functions - the NG51 is such a difficult unit to work on - it is a shame the chassis was not set out the same as the Dynacord - the physical layout makes it much easier to access the components!
I would love to get one of these. I've already an M40 to be paired with. Tim, what would be your recommendations to know how to pick one of these NG51 that can work? How to really check without being on site at seller's place? There are several selling on ebay but mainly located in Germany. I'm living in South France. Awesome channel by the way. Love it. Keep posting content!!
Thank you very much! It is not easy to tell if a NG-51 is in workable condition only by pictures. And I have to say that this video is from 4 years ago when I just started to be interested in the NG-51. The device in the video is in bad condition, but I had not the experience when I made the video and have bought other devices later (on EBay) that were way better. If you have a certain device that you think about buying, you could sent me the link in an email to info@bandecho.de and I then can tell you what I see and if the device is good. Just a few things to look out for in pictures: - Do you see rust? That is almost every time an indicator that the device was stored in humid conditions and that tells you: needs extensive restoration - Does the seller provide photos from the inside (I mean from the electrical parts on the inside). If not, better ask them for photos of the inside. If he denies that: Don‘t buy or only at a very low price - Does the device have all the knobs? If not, they are very rare and expensive - Does the device have all the tape heads? If not = very very expensive problem - Is the area around the tape very dirty? This means that you will have to clean it which is a very time extensive thing and usually it is another giveaway that the device was neglected and needs a full restoration - Does the seller say that it was repaired in the last 3 years? If not then be prepared that it needs service before you can use it - If you have pictures of the inside: If the capacitors all look old, you can be 100% sure that the device will not work. Or in other words - it might work a little but you will damage it when you use it. Needs restoration. - Look if the button on the right is pushed in. If not then you can be sure that the pinch roller is broken. - If the seller writes that he does not have the power cord then treat the device as defective. In my opinion it might be best to buy a fully serviced device for a higher price than buying a device that is rusty and dirty - this will cost much more to restore in the long run. -Tim
@@bandecho_de Hello Tim, thank you so much for your kind and detailed answer. Much appreciated. I would follow all your suggestions, I'm already finding some units on ebay but maybe I should email you for more info before making any buy decision. Let me some days to see what I can find out and maybe I would get back to you. After getting an M40, that sounds gorgeous, the NG51 has been as a high priority in my wish list. Thanks again for sharing this content and the passion you put on the Klemt equipment!
thanks for the video, i just got one here, in Glasgow, she's making clunky noises and not altogether clean on the reverb, just going to have a wee look inside to see if anything is obviously out of place, maybe bumped in transit..here goes...
@@bandecho_de thanks tim, it was the tape, it was being chewed, replaced it, cleaned it out with alcohol, now not getting any repeats on the echo, its reverbing a bit but not like it was..
Hi! Is the lack of echo repeats a new problem, in other words were there more repeats with the old tape? If you want to, you can mail me a few pictures of the device: tmfroder@gmail.com. Especially from the area where the tape loop runs. I will see if something looks not right.
Another thing to check: Are there two trim pots right in the middle of where the tape loop runs? The left one is for the input level, the right one is for the echo repeats (feedback).
@@bandecho_de there is one on top and two on back, hum, delay level and the one by the tape is level, is that right? I turned the delay level up and I either get screeching feedback or no delay, it was indeed delaying fine on the last tape, hoping its not the heads..
Hello friend, do you still have those units with you? I just got me a NG 51 S, but it came with like 3 of the tube cables detached from the PCB. It doesnt seem intervened at all like you mentioned in the video, i think this was just mishandling in the shipping. I wanted to know, if you still have those machines, if you could help me with pics or something like that to aid me reattach the detached cables back to the board, thank you!
Hi Alejandro, yes I still have them and I can provide pictures. Can you send me photos of the place where the cables are detached? I will then take a photo of the same place from my units. Just send them to tmfroder@gmail.com
My very first tape echo, worked great after replacing the tape. What a blast from the past.
Yeah, I always think more people would play them if they knew how good they sound.
I just happened upon one a mile away from me. Was recently serviced, clean inside, sounds amazing. I consider myself very lucky.
Yes, you are! Their sound is captivating.
nice. these are a pain in the ass to work on. But when they do work, they sound incredible. I play main a lot more than i thought i would.
