You know, for a kid as a first bike, I think this is a great starter for the price. Given the fact that it is not made for heavier riders, I think it did very well, given the tricks... for the day. ; ) My first bike came from Thrifty's, back in the very early 80's. It was a pre- Stu Thomsen Huffy Pro Thunder, and I beat the heck out of it for a good bit of time. It wasn't the best but I did manage to keep up with others on better bikes doing jumps, wheelies, and other minor tricks. But a few years later I got a KHS that did a bit better, until I cracked the frame with a jump off of a loading dock... luckily, the warranty got me a new frame. But as for first bikes, my Huffy Pro Thunder was great for the cheap price. For an 11-year-old kid, that bike gave me a lot of riding experience.

Plus, some kids are irresponsible with bicycles; many of which get stolen by not locking them up, and others stolen even when locked. Cheaper is better. If, however, my kid was progressing toward tricks and possibly competition, then yes, expensive/better bikes make a lot of sense. But for beginners, regardless of one's financial position or affluence, cheaper is still better for starters.

I like to see this video because I have a mongoose index 1.0 which Im pretty sure it’s a Walmart bike, but I’m upgrading it. I’ve done bars, grips, black ops 3pc crank, and nice tires going from 20x1.95s to 20x2.10s. All I got to do to it now is new wheels, forks and all that in front. I fell better knowing that it’s a mongoose but not sure if that makes it any better to anyone else.

Since then, bike companies have discovered the best weight/ geometry. I'll give them that but the result is nobody being able to tell your bike is $1500 vs $150, because they all look the same. And from a distance we could tell what was a GT, Haro, Dyno, Hutch etc.

Right? When i needed a starter bmx 10 years ago you couldnt find a decent bmx at walmart. Had to use a real bike shop for 3x that price.

The mongoose frames from Walmart are completely different from the frames that come from mongoose they aren’t even made it the same factory
