Mortal Kombat 1 - What Happened To Raiden? Remnants Of The Past?! Theory And Analysis!

- Hello everyone!
And of course! Welcome back to yet another Mortal Kombat 1 video!
Now today, with us still only a few mere weeks off that gameplay reveal trailer, I want to discuss and analyse a particular character that was EXTREMELY briefly featured In It Raiden.
The thunder god has been a pivotal icon of the franchise, serving as both wise arbiter and lethal enforcer, Raiden himself has also been pretty integral characters to many throughout the franchise, and this includes the reboot sequel event, or requel events of Mortal Kombat 9!
In short has been pretty damn Integral to the series since his debut, but with that said… what has become of the thunder god here?
Because the raiden of old Is seemingly gone… now replaced with a very new and very different version of himself… which raises the question of what exactly become of him here?

In Aftermath Liu introduced himself to Great Kung Lao as the God of Thunder and fire while in MK1 he introduced himself just as The God of Fire to Cage. I felt he has already returned his lightning abilities to Raiden as a sense of Gratitude. while building him for the great Tournament
God of fire and thunder bro
@@felixgeovaniprasetya6096 corrected.. Thanks
As much as I like this theory I think there’s a big chance that “god of fire and thunder” was too long to say every single time so they switched it to “god of fire” just for ease.
@@PapilioMemnon_ that can be a valid reason too..
@@PapilioMemnon_I mean idk in 11 they definitely made sure you knew he was using lightning in conjunction with fire in all his moves but in mk1 that isn't the case. There's kinda these lightning looking blue lines that come out sometimes but they're so subtle and could just as easily not be lightning so I feel like it's safe to assume he doesn't use lightning anymore. Whether that means it's because he gave that portion of his power to new timeline Raiden or not idk
I oddly imagine Raiden aged, passed away, and then was reborn into this new era where Liu Kang saw he would need his old friend the most.
nah, he got deleted during aftermath, liu kang is the only survivor of the mk9/x/11 timeline
@@airrider-jk9ikshang tsung left him alive in his ending.
@@angelrosas3724 yes, but shang tsung's ending isnt canon, in the timline of MK1 liu kang is the only one who remembers everything from MK9/X/11
@@airrider-jk9ik oh i was thinking it was Shang Tsung from aftermath ending that invaded Liu Kang's new timeline
@@MultiBahader it could be, but even then the raiden in his ending for aftermath wasnt the same raiden from MK9/X/11, it was a new raiden in shang tsung's timeline, if it is that shang tsung in MK1, then it means only liu and shang remember the 9/X/11 timeline
It would be awesome if we could've seen a young fujin as well, seeing as him and raiden are brothers
That is a possibility.
Fujin is still a god I think
He better be in the game hes movement is 🎉 flows with the wind
@colonelhstinkmeaner8547 well maybe the closest thing we'll have to a young fujin is Kung lao then I guess he has abilities similar to that of wind
they are not brothers.....
They are brothers as in both being gods.
Honestly, it was time. They've been trying to retire Raiden since MK4 and it never worked out. The guy's been through a lot. He deserves to experience life as a mortal.
Even though I'm not the biggest fan of Battle of the Realms, there's a quote by mortal Raiden which really stuck with me:
"Time for sleep, something I haven't experienced in, well... ever. It should be quite the experience."
Being God is stressful in mk universe
I am going to miss Richard Epcar as Raiden
Me too, that man was a best voice actor to play Raiden.
@nigelyoung4128 I wonder who is Raiden's new voice actor maybe Richard Epcar retired from voicing Raiden
Not dead yet, but certainly not forgotten. He is also fighting games Joker, both for MK and Injustice.
I'm sure he'll be a skin a some point.
He also voiced Joseph Jostar.
Raiden: BY THE GODS!!!
I think with Liu Kang ascending to Godhood, Raiden is reincarnated into a mortal to take Liu Kang's place to fill the void. Near the end of the game, Liu Kang will probably come upon a situation where he talks to Raiden and tells him "Long ago, you sacrificed something to save me. Today, I return it to you."
What if Liu Kang sacrificed himself so Raiden could become the new thunder god while battling shinnok??
@@averystewart3117if Kronika doesn’t exist, doesn’t that mean cetrion and shinok don’t exist either?
@@GetSlappedUp101 not necessarily… Just because they haven’t shown up yet doesn’t mean they’re not around. They could simply coexist as brother and sister AND NOT YET BE GODS….remember Liu Kang isn’t a god in other timelines👍🏽
You know considering Ed Boon described MK1's ending as "crazy" which is a high bar to succeed at after the previous games. What if both of Aftermath's endings are canon. And what I mean is, what if we start off with Liu's timeline only to be invaded by Tsung's timeline and so we get two distinctly different Raidens at once.
Genius idea
Shang Tsung essence was in the crown when Liu kang put it on
That was my theory for the game's plot. I thought that there'd only be enough room for one timeline and that they'd settle it in a new tournament
very good theory
This story is so ridiculous tbh. I hate when they do time bs and destroy entire universes and characters that have been well established for years. The writers at NRS are terrible.
Lu Kang took on Raiden's role in the new timeline, and to maintain cosmic balance Raiden had to take on Lu Kang's role. I don't think there will be much reminent of old raiden unless new raiden ends up awakening to it during the story.
no, kung lao is taking liu's role, raiden will likely take on kung lao's role of "chosen one's best friend"
@@airrider-jk9ik kung lao isn't taking liu kang's role,he is too Cocky like he always is
@@SupportGamin2024 at the start of the story yes, but Kung lao's development over this game and its eventual sequels will be mellowing out and beciming the chosen one he is meant to be, kung lao is the new liu kang
It could be that Raiden asked Liu Kang not to give him his memories back once he was reborn in the new timeline. The memories he gained in MK9 messed him up by a lot.
The original Raiden seems very prone to corruption due to his long standing efforts to safeguard Earthrealm from Shao Kahn. The guy has lived too long in desperation to be an entire world's protector.
@@Justice107 its not the same raiden from mk11
plus
as of the ending of aftermath raiden was no longer with liu kang at the dawn of time
My guess is that Lui has an incredible amount of influence in shaping this universe and probably reorganized events so that Raiden was born around the same time as Kung Lao. Lui Kang himself seems to be the host for an unknown force
The only thing I noticed is basically Raiden and Lui Kang switched roles. Lui is the god and mentor seeking earthrealm warriors for something. Raiden is the student and one of the leading protagonists just like Lui was in the old timelines.
I am still hoping for fujin to appear in mortal kombat 1 because that would be really awesome
While Lui is a god gea basically a titian fujin could still be the god of earth realm and is helping Lui. It's doubtful but possibly
@@cngotham4111 yup indeed
Perhaps it’s possible that the new Raiden we see in MK1 is a descendant of the original Raiden, and has inherited a fraction of his ancestor’s electrokinesis? Just throwing that idea out there.
I like this idea
Itll make sense cos Raiden has been protecting and fighting for literal eons. I feel Liu might want to give him an honorable veteran's sendoff in the New Era and make him normal, find a romantic partner and settle down. Its a nice thought
he's his reincarnation. Not direct descendant
@@sonic-bb i mean obviously everyone now knows lol
@@joshua2764 well i mean... he said descendant..
I've been thinking about the Reincarnated Raiden theory for sometime now (05:20 - 06:23) which may be likely. I like the idea of this "new" Raiden learning to use lightning (that may or may not bestowed by Fire God Liu Kang) in the new Era. I think that alone just scratched the surface that is the MK1 story.
Correction Raiden doesn’t die to Shang Tsung but is left near death and is weakened
That's right! Raiden and Fujin did appear as corrupted versions in Shang Tsung's Aftermath ending. Good catch!
@@thegreatbocaj Shao khan even says , lets kill them, hinting at them being alive and wekened, and Shang Tsung says " No keep them alive, they are an endless suplly of energy ". Basicly they are left alive to be shang batery lol
I feel like MK 1 raiden is a type of reincarnation and also the kung Lao in this game while kung lao took lui kangs place
lui kangs legs were fine because him being a god disconnects him from his other selves, that's why there couldn't be more then 1 Raiden also
I really wanna see havik come back and i have a strong feeling that it's pretty likely
I’m just glad that Raiden has his powers. I was worried that he wouldn’t have his powers anymore.
Raiden is my favorite character and I’m interested to see this new take on him 👌
I got to admit Liu Kangs god ascension power up was OP. God Raiden isn’t even a fraction of him. Shang Tsung beat Raiden and Fujin at the same time, absorbed them, Shao Kahn , and kronika and still couldn’t beat liu Kang. I’m not sure why liu Kang is so much more powerful than Raiden was. I guess it’s raiders power plus his own but even that doesn’t explain why Shang Tsung lost
what if he didn't....
Here is why… Fire God Liu Kang had the power and knowledge of Revenant Liu Kang,Liu Kang and Raiden. Revenant Liu Kang might not be seen too powerful but he did defeat Jacqui easily. Raiden also has infinite power due to his connection with the Jinsei. It isn’t until Raiden tells Liu Kang “The Jinsei flows within you” that Liu Kang is able to power up against the Godly Revenants. Raiden on his own is able to fight Elder Gods,Shao Kahn, etc. Imagine the combine might of 2 Liu Kangs and Raiden. Yes Tsung effortlessly defeated both of them due to his power increasing but even in Tsung ending he states that even he is vulnerable. Is possible that Fire God Liu Kang saw in the hourglass a way in to defeat Tsung and erase him from history while Kronika with the Crown is simply suicide unless he converts her into stone(similar to what Raiden did to Shao in Shaolin Monks)
Shang Tsung had the power of the crown, him by himself isnt even half as strong as Fujin, let alone Raiden. Liu Kang's god ascension happens by the merging of Raiden + 2 Liu Kangs, so no, there isnt as big of a power difference as you might think
Firegod liukang = 2 liukang + god raiden + jinsei + shinnok amulet. Too strong for shangtsung even with the crown. And liu grab the crown in his aftermath ending. I dont know why he didnt wear the crown in mk1.
@@Kenvvr why do you mention the amulet?
Old Raiden still exists probably helping Shang Tsung
I mean it's most likely the same Raiden just a different interpretation and basically younger
the design of the characters is beautiful and spectacular... It conveys that they are warrior martial artists
Since Raiden and liu kang have swapped places, it is a good time for Fire God Liu Kang to learn why Thunder god Raiden made the choices he did in Mk9-11since he is now immortal. and the new Raiden can learn how being mortal shaped old Liu Kang's choices.
I think old raiden is dead having offered his guidance for "as long as his mortality could allow"
the new Raiden is actually Kung Lao, trained and renamed by Liu Kang in honor of Raiden.
the Kung Lao we see in MK1 is the GREAT Kung Lao, with an extended lifespan of a Champion of Mortal Kombat, having never died thanks to Liu Kangs preparation.
no, the raiden seen in MK11's base game ending disappeared because of the events of aftermath, at the end of MK11's overall story Liu kang is the only remnant of the old timeline
@@airrider-jk9ik That doesn't make any sense, raiden never died in the events of Aftermath, Shang Tsung leaves him and fujin barely alive to use as infinitely recharging soul batteries, and its not like that would kill Liu Kang's Raiden, after all Revenant Liu Kang also siphoned his own past versions soul without disappearing.
@@sasaki999pro the raiden that made to it to the dawn of time of liu kang stopped existing the moment liu kang reset the timeline, as did the raiden and fujin who were drained by shang tsung, liu kang is the only remnant of the MK9/X/11 timeline
I'm designating this new Raiden as "Kid Thunder".
I like that Bi Han is beardless and has long hair to differentiate himself from his younger brother Kuai Liang who has short hair and a beard.
That honestly should've been the other way around
Maybe Liu Kang is really Shang Tsung in disguise 🤷🏾♂️😅
Im thinking that this is just one hourglass now. And one timeline with aftermath/11 being in the past. Im guessing this Raiden is simply a younger man, much like Lui Kang was to Raiden before.
What are fantastic video. I’ll be honest, I was sad to see that Raiden’s iconic voice (Richard Epcar) for the past decade was no longer present in MK1. But what if you are onto something? With two hour glasses, the Raiden of past time could still be alive, guarding or one of them. It would be the one scene for the pass ticket invoiced for the same actor. Could you imagine a scene in MK1 where the Raiden of the past (Richard) is talking to his younger self? Holy shit… that would be epic.
Crazy theory, but what if liu kang starts the game with both powers like mk11 but after he chooses Raiden as his new champion he gives him the thunder powers maybe by talking with the elder gods? It would be better than just Raiden randomly having these powers as a monk
It will be extremely cool if Raiden is the new protagonist of MK 1.
its gonna be King lao
I must consult the Elder Gods.
@@airrider-jk9ik no
@@SupportGamin2024and how do you know this champ?
I bet raiden is the new liu kang in the new era
no that;s kung lao, raiden will takeon Kung lao's old role of the chosen ones best friend
The new Raiden is basically taking the spot in this timeline Liu Kang took in the previous timeline, it seems like.
I think somehow Raiden will become a god again. I think Bi-Han will eventually become Noob. I heard there are fixed points that must happen in all timelines. We will see!
What if Mortal Raiden finally got to marry and have children and the new Raiden is his predecessor!
Someone started a theory that this Raiden could Liu Kang's son named after his mentor. Mmmaybe that could explain why this raiden is a novice. Idk gotta love fan theories eh?
Another awesome video HBT Warrior , been watching your mortal kombat videos for a long time now and never do you fail to make it special!
I'd like to think after the events of Aftermath, Raiden remained at God Liu Kang's side until he aged and passed normally. Liu Kang then crafted a new era where Raiden was mortal but still has his Lightning abilities, essentially taking the role Liu Kang himself once embodied as one of the Shaolin pair alongside Great Kung Lao.
Liu Kang may have chosen Great Kung Lao as his champion but Raiden I feel is gonna be the "real main character" of this game, with God Liu Kang now taking Raiden's old role of mentor-god.
Liu Kang is the new *Raiden (God/Protector)*
Kung Lao is the new *Liu Kang (Champion/Chosen One)*
Raiden is the new *Kung Lao (Sidekick)*
but lao didn’t have lighting powers
@@Alexa-dc5ij Just like what Ed Boon said, *MK1* is gonna be a new (and different) timeline from the previous one.
They better bring back Dark Raiden!!!
I’m just hoping Raiden has a mortal name since ‘Raiden’ sounds more a title than a name. As such it sounds a bit strange to be given that name at birth
Jack.
A another video of the bat nice one history behind the warrior good to see u back man good job on the video man
6:00 If your referring to the blue in lui kang attacks that isnt lightning but the blue fire we see in lui kang fighting spirit intro in mk 11
I really dig young new kid on the block raiden. I’ll be playing him now.
I believe him to be the demigod child of Liu Kang and that Liu Kang still had some of Raiden's essence
Why does Lui refer to himself as The Chosen One since he created this universe?
Because he is the chosen one
I know that most don't know or care about them but I'd like to see Taven and Dagon return don't know how that would make for a great narrative though.🤔
Raiden explanation is pretty easy. Mortals have their own timelines, gods exist outside of them. Raiden stopped being a god in the mk11 timeline, therefore existing in it. MK11 Raiden dies aiding Lui Kang in rebuilding the timeline, so MK1 Raiden takes Lui Kang's previous position in the timeline when being born into it. Raiden couldn't exist twice in Mk11 because he was a god. There can't be 2 Raidens in a timeline because he existed in all of them at once, thats what being a god in MK does to you. So the other one disappeared. Now Raiden exists independently in all timelines, meaning you can have 2 Raidens. MK11's and Mk1's
My favorite character of the mk universe! Always Lord Raiden
Seeing a human Raiden, makes Kronikas prophecy true where there’s always conflict revolving around Raiden and Lue Kang.
Dark Raiden disappeared presumably into the void, so perhaps we could see him as well in this game? 🤔
That’s what I’m thinking to because in the beginning of the MK11 story seeing dark Raiden erased early is kinda suspicious to me 🤔🤔
Raiden past self gave his powers to to liu Kang. So that’ll mean dark raiden will not have his powers anymore.
Raiden didn't die against shang stung. He was imprisoned by shang so that he could siphon his energy for eternity
Raiden is immortal
Onaga has to be the main villain
Great video this is my all-time favorite character of all Mortal Kombats
It erkes me to see Johnny Cage without Sonya Blade, I that she was freaking reduced to being a mere cameo
Revenant Liu just healed from fusing with Raiden's powers. Don't forget, past Liu Kang (who's the body and dominant persona) was a shriveled up and dying body but now he's all healed up upon fusing with Raiden
Its interesting how in the past timeline Raiden was said to be a demigod insinuating he was a human given godly powers and then he gave them to Liu Kang ti become mortal again. Now he is a mortal with lightning ablilities. All thats left is for him to come back full circle and become a demigod again.
He is not a demigod but a god not as powerful as the elder gods who manage entire existence but a protector of a real reality planet call it as you wish. Liu Kang just took Raidens role and he is also the keeper of time after killing Kronica
@@Marcelocostache raiden is a demi-god He and fujin are brothers
I would like to see Cole Young in mk1...Cole Young is a BADASS character since he is a professional MMA fighter who can transform his body into super powerful armor and can create weapons...COLE YOUNG would be perfect for mk
4:40 technically, if you look at the portal he comes out of, its the void beyond time, a place where time doesnt afect those inside, its still possible that that is the case though as i may just be looking in to deep and/or an accidental genius moment from NRS
When Lui Kang gained Raiden's powers he became unaffected by time or rather was beyond time.
@@brotherdarkness89 while yes its also not fully reliable, since raiden did get affected in aftermath by time stop(which kronika said didn't affect him because god) but even then, unlike raiden, liu kang has a human version which hypothetically, should affect him should the past receive damage, the problem is that not only is NRS inconsistent in everything, but they never elaborate on things like this so we cant say what the answer is with 100% accuracy unless stated by the writers...
@@drakeredgrave6747 that's just my theory based from the game that Raiden's power protects him from kronika's time stop abilities and fire god Lui Kang now having that power isn't affected by the things in aftermath. But hey we'll know the case when it comes out as you mentioned. But it is fun to have these theories till September lol
If Raiden is mortal does that mean Fujin as well?
I like to think Liu sat down both 'Older Timeline' Raiden and Still a god Fujin and ask if Fujin wants to join Mortal Raiden because their family or only Raiden gets reborn as Mortal but only Fujin remian a god since the Temple of the Elements is reference in Reboot MK1 with Liu vs Sub-Zero/Bi-Han
If so, Fujin stays being a god to help train Liu to protect and use his powers among Mortal Raiden creating a better timeline and possibly after training either reborn mortal or he returns to the Temple of the Elements to guard something depending if Shinnok's amulet or another dangerous treasure
I would love to see rain return as a main character with his mortal kombat 9 outfit and classic ninja skin !
Also would love to see Onaga (whos been hinted at in character intros) to make a return
Thanks for this!
Your the GOAT man💪🏾
I think the thing nobody is willing to consider, because 31 years of conditioning to the same general timeline, is that NRS wants this new story to have as little to do with the old era as possible. Liu Kang will probably be the only remnant of that era left as he was the one to shape this new era.
According to some of the new character bios unveiled, Scorpion and Sub Zero are both Lin Kuei and are indeed brothers. Mileena and Kitana are actual sisters and the former is infected with a "Tarkat" disease. So those are already pretty big changes from their old era counterparts.
It would be a funny nod to the new generation if the new Raiden is the son of the OG Raiden. Not only would we get a new Raiden but maybe we can the original as a skin like with the movie Raiden.
Raiden had lightning Powers before he became what he was and lui kang used fire too before he was named fire god lui kang that is logical 😅
i dont think this can be the case. Judging by how the earlier mk's played out, multiple timelines in the mk universe just means different timelines that already played out. Not timelines existing at the same time. There are many instances of this being the case in mk11
Richard as raiden was probably one of the best castings for a Mk character
Liu Kang just went back in time or to an alternate universe and Raiden hasn't mastered his powers yet.
Fire God Liu Kang made Raiden a little boy in this reality so he cant tell him what to do anymore!
I had an idea for Raiden that would have been cool. My idea was to do a mortal kombat origins game that tells character stories from before mortal kombat 1. And my idea for Raiden is he had a love interest (water goddess or something) who was the original protector of earth realm, but Raiden was indifferent towards earth realm at first, and when Shinnok kills her, Raiden goes super saiyan, and beats Shinnok sending him to to netherrealm, and as she's dying in his arms her last wish was to be the new protector of earthrealm, and so he does it.
Been waiting on your thoughts on this change 😅
It's as simple as Raiden made Liu Kang a God and Liu Kang Restarted the timeline and reversed the roles but Raiden isnt his Champion fighter
Really thoughtful insights into this my dude, I was just telling my friends of what do we really know of the hourglass itself other just being a oversized doomsday cloak with backwards and forwards 🤣🤣 so history behind the warrior pedia, I may have a interesting tidbit to possibly share, at the beginning of aftermath when they escaped the void, it was breaking because they lacked the snooze button aka the crowning achievement 🤣🤣🤣🤣 if Shang tsung was as clever and with his signature dung eating grin that he had for everyone, a truly small piece of the glass containing the glass itself split the realities. A hairline straining out of the main branch. It’s a long shot but hey they included the mcguffin
I have a few video topic suggestions/requests about Geras and the other new mk11 characters returning.
I know there have been characters before who were initially introduced as working for the villain of the week, but unlike Quan Chi or Shang Tsung or even Erron Black, Geras seems like he doesn’t have much personality or plot potential outside of Kronika.
Regarding the other characters, id like to hear which mk11 characters you think could return? Im curious if they’ll try to incorporate more Elder Gods after adding in Cetrion
Raidens voice in mk4 was so Epic wish stayed booming and echoing definitely was more god like
Kenshi is Cole Young?? that is, Kenshi's face is identical to Lewis Tan's
His face model is the guy from gameology. Also with kitana
Remember when the first trailer played. Shang Tsung's portal opens when they announced him as DLC. Shang Tsung followed FG Liu Kang
I was thinking how Kronika could bestow powers to Geras or even Frost. Maybe Lord Liu Kang as keeper of time can similarly share powers. If so, I wonder if he could choose to power boost anyone else?
I think the new raiden is an entirely new person, just given the title/nickname of raiden and trained in his ways, replacing liu kang as the student and being kung lao's friend/rival. Maybe it's Liu Kangs way of honoring raiden.
Lu kang is the new raiden
Kung Lao is the new Lu kang
Raiden is the new kung Lao
Raiden is like a sorcerer here
Could be this is Liu Kang’s first try at the hourglass and running the probabilities of what would happen. Would be interesting if the next few games were his multiple attempts to get it right. Maybe after the third one seeing that he has to give Raiden’s powers back to him.
It's like Mario, he's baby Raiden.
I already want to see the great Kung Lao and adolescent human Raiden in action
Could it be possible that Raiden has been apart of The Great Kung Laos lineage all along before he became a god, hence his connection with the white lotus. Obviously a lot of Raidens origins are somewhat primordial but something to think about.
Yeah origin story
I've read some translated comments from small Japanese audiences that they are baffled on "Why a god based on a *Japanese* Shinto religion is now a Chinese instead of a Japanese man?"
I think when it comes to MK lore its just best to appreciate the fighting and not look too much for logic in the narrative. MK's lore has always been quite chaotic and full of plot holes, ESPECIALLY after MK11 time travel plot.
The hourglass will probably never be mentioned again, or just maybe hinted at somewhere. Its only purpose was for MK to have a reboot. That purpose is served.
Characters that should return:
1. Reptile
2. Jade
3. Smoke
4. Tanya
5. Fujin
Just to name a few. Down the line I would like to see Tekeda
I would say, after Raiden dies, he is reincarnated as a normal mortal. And for lui kang, he is now a god, there for separated from time lines.
It's pretty obvious that young Raiden is Kidd Thunder.
Raiders has given everything he’s had for Earthrealm through the years salute to him
4:18 Kahn swung that hammer at his own daughter lol
in the aftermath endings like he said splinter off when revenant Liu's legs being broken where thunder and fire god Liu's is not. I truly believe Shang Tsun is building an army in his own time line to then attack Liu's and take both for himself.
Old Raiden is definitely dead. Liu Kang has been living out this new timeline since it’s existence so it’s pretty fair to say that old Raiden died long ago.
Is becoming immortal after winning the Mortal Kombat tournament still canon?
Its possible Raiden aged out of existence but Liu Kang attempted to reincarnate him. Raiden seemed to have the avenue of requesting such a feat when it came to Scorpion's clan. Liu Kang may be preparing Raiden to be Mortal Kombat's immortal champion or preparing to return his powers once enough experience/wisdom is gained by the young warrior.
Im saying dark raiden is the final boss but not him he is fused with shang tsung and thats the final boss 😅 if this is the Story it would be nice and funny 😂
They say this a business and a farm not just a farm.... McDonalds.
I'm kind of hoping that this new Raiden is possibly the now mortal Raiden's son. Since the older Raiden is mortal, it's possible that Raiden got married in his mortal years and this new guy is Raiden's son. Maybe he took the name Raiden to honor his father after he died of old age? Especially since this new Raiden seems to be someone entirely different from the older Raiden, especially since it seems this new Raiden is a Shaolin.
It's probably not going to be the case, but it would be a good plot twist, and I think an interesting idea.
Raiden isn't a title,it's a name
