    Another tip of advice on “big builds” that I’ve heard is: don’t think of it as a large build. See it as many small builds. A tower, a wall, a house, a fountain, terraforming/adding greenery. While it all goes into the big build, it’s all a bunch of small builds. It really helps with the satisfaction of knowing you’ve accomplished something. And instead of going “ugh! I still got sooooo much to do” It’s an “oh look! I did a thing!”

    • @BlueNerdMC
      @BlueNerdMC  3 года назад +103

      That's actually a very good way of thinking Trish, breaking down the build in to what seems like smaller builds would definitely make it seem less intimidating and make the build appear more manageable =)

    My technique is:
    a) find the peaks and clear them - that's prime real estate
    b) draw out paths according to where the first buildings are and how people would access them - people always take shortcuts except where environmental features intervene
    c) live into it - wander around the area as if you live there and see what changes appear apparent
    d) when building new buildings, also consider upgrading or changing older ones, as would happen in real life over time

    around 10:30 you mention how to add color to desert builds, my thoughts are:
    really play around with stained glass! especially with shaders the sunlight filtering through can make sandstone castles look incredible. also in deserts, a lot of cultures focused heavily on dye and rug production, so wool out the wazoo and maybe even a dye farm (pools of multicolored concrete or wool) would be great additions to a castle of a village surrounding one

    I would really love to see some tips for building more "evil-ish" and menacing castles and houses.

    • @glowerworm
      @glowerworm 2 года назад +6

      Personally I think the less intricate patterning, the more "evil". If your castle is less of a palace and more of a burg/fortress, it's more "evil" (more militaristic than exquisite). So fewer cone/triangle roofs, more squarish shapes. And the walls should be imposing when standing at the entrance. Don't have the entrance be a long sloped hill, rather have the castle walls just start immediately at a tall height. You can still have a sloped entrance, just make the walls tall at the entrance. They should be purely defensive, not inviting.
      And of course, primary material should be hard stuff like rock (not wood), and primary colors should be muted (like gray, generally) some vibrant colors and some intricate roofs are fine, but they should remain secondary or even tertiary in their quantity.

    • @outcast4087
      @outcast4087 2 года назад +4

      @@glowerworm these are the tips that I generally aware of, I just can't utilize them properly on my own. This is why I would love to see a video covering those, so that I could observe some good examples.
      As for the building blocks, I'd use all variants of deepslate and blackstone, nether bricks and red nether bricks for contrast, and spruce, dark oak and crimson for occasional wood (I use "Crimsoner crimson" resourcepack from VanillaTweaks, it makes crimson wood look more red). Maybe some warped wood as well, not sure. This is the block palette I'd go for.

    I really thought i built my castle layout bug enough, it takes up nearly half a map! But i made rhe walls 3 bricks thick, followed the contours of a mountain with only some terraforming...and its pretty claustrophobic inside, after adding a couple of buildings. I ended up building trading stalls into the walls.
    I definitely learned a lot, it was my first castle build. Looks great, still have some detailing to do. Thanks for the inspiration

    Lots of great tips here! My castle building has been mostly in creative with my daughter. I've tackled one hilltop fort project in survival, and that's like a castle, I guess. But it was on an SMP, and I didn't have time to build it all out. I did get the manor house done, along with walls, towers, barracks, and a gatehouse, though. And a sewer system. That was one of my favourite builds, to be honest.

    • @BlueNerdMC
      @BlueNerdMC  3 года назад +4

      Thanks JayDee, castles are so much fun to build. I think the reason I love building them so much is because there's so many ways to build one and so many rooms that it just makes such an interesting build. Never thought about adding a sewer system to one though so i'll have to give that a go at some point 👍

    • @JayDeeMC
      @JayDeeMC 3 года назад +3

      @@BlueNerdMC I tend to stick with smaller scale builds, even though I am building a megabase on an SMP right now. But I will eventually tackle a proper castle. The sewer was more of a second entrance that's hidden. I really enjoyed buliding it.

    I'm currently building a city in a creative world and just last week realized that the harbor I made doesn't make much sense being on a river. So just a pro tip for anyone building with worldedit, it's not too much of a challenge to artificially turn the other side of your river into an ocean, assuming you haven't built on the other side of that river. Just use //brush air 5 while holding a tool to remove spheres of terrain, then use //smooth 5 5 while holding another tool to smooth it out and make it look natural. afterwards, you can add in textures as you please and then use //fixwater [radius] to, obviously, fix all the water in the area. Make sure your radius isn't some absurd number or else you might be waiting awhile!

    Decide grid/modular design your using and test it in creative fully. I use 3 blocks wall then 1 block. This means 3x3 rooms, or 7x7 rooms or 11x11 rooms but this means no double door unless you break symmetry/grid/modular design. Start with extremely low wall and make up basic area then clean it up with your grid then decide towers, entrances etc. In very least walls, towers and entrances through wall should attempt to follow rule.

    when i make a castle, the basement floor is the prison and the armory, the ground floor is the "palace" kind of space, the first floor is the place where you process documents and get approvement from government officials. on the first floor is also the staff room, where servants sleep. the second floor is the throne room. the throne room is also the meeting room, where cabinet members, counts, and dukes meet up, and talk about future plans for the kingdom. the second floor is also the "balcony" where the king can talk to his people, and next to it is the storage room with a heck ton of open windows to keep them cool and prevent stocks from spoiling.
    the third floor is the king's bedroom.
    and there is also located the bedroom of his princes, and guest rooms for important visitors.
    i modelled my castle from city halls. my father told me about city halls. they are a place where you process documents, get approvement s and so on. and in the basement is a prison to temporarily house criminals.
    another i do, is i build castles surrounded by mountains, hills, rivers. it doesn't have to be super close, maybe a few hundred or thousand block distant is enough. and then i connect those natural landmass with a wall.
    so you can think of the castle as something like, a castle surrounded by mountains and rivers which are connected by walls.
    another thing is i try to put the villages a bit farther away from the castle.
    i do that to give it a strategic.purpose, so if the first line of defenses (mountains and initial walls are breached) and the castle is sieged, there is not much suburban areas where the enemies can hide.
    so u can think of
    castle - some open field - village - some open field - initial defenses
    yep

I wanted to build a town, but it was at the time when I had already developed my area quite a bit, and because I placed those buildings without anything in mind for the future, there wasn't much space for roads. It also didn't help that there wasn't a good place to put a harbor in. So, having learned from these mistakes, I have found a new area for a city, got rough plans and eager to build.
    However, I have decided that I shouldn't make such Napoleonic plans while my base area remains a mess - I literally have a deforested and flattened out island left from the previous project right next to my starter house. So now I've decided to take an "intermediate step" before jumping into the deep end - to build myself a castle on that island first, since it's a perfect spot for it.. And I already got plans for it and eager to start testing them out.
    However, another issue arose: clashing block palettes. Originally I had intended my base to utilise deepslate as its primary stone block, and so far it worked fine. But it's a different thing with castles - because they are mostly made out of said stone, especially the medieval ones. And deepslate is painful to texturise, with so little block variety. So I'm contemplating if I should opt for regular stone castle, which would not only mean my crashing defeat, but also that I'd probably have to replace all deepslate for stone in most of my current builds, to match the block palette. And as you said in the video yourself, that task would be just as painful.

    Hehe I found a nice mountain village in survival and wanted to build a castle next to it, then realized I needed to plan it out better because of the environment and some lack of space.
    When I get burn out I go on explorations and farm some materials, and sometimes add or upgrade houses for the villagers

    Really should get going on that.

    A few good things to remember especially when striving for strictly realistic builds is that real castles are not really as big as fantasy castles are. Most castles, especially in the early medieval period, contained two to three rooms at most. Another important thing to take note of is making a castle architecturally sound. Oftentimes you’ll see towers and whatnot coming out of the top of another section of the castle, but the interior underneath will be empty. This is extremely unrealistic and frankly quite silly. Making sure that its architecturally sound not only makes it more realisitc, but can also make for a more interesting and more complex interior. Another really important thing is understanding the difference between a CASTLE and a PALACE. Castles are defendable, palaces arent. So make sure there are realistic walls and make buildings’ walls thick or thin accordingly. Finally, one huge thing that really damages realism and overall design, are the crenellations: the little protrusions from the top of the wall. Crenellations are designed for defense, so please, make them at least a block and a half in height. Too often, people make them only one block high, or add stairs to walk up behind the crenellations (which makes no sense, why would you want to stand above the defensive barrier?). Just some stuff to think about to add realism. Above all, though, do research, learn about castles. It can be surprising what you learn. IN short, knowing the basic principles behind castle designs can help build more realistic, yet still fantastic castles.

    Also with the desert builds: reference photos! Architecture in deserts are different than westernized/European buildings for a reason. Also: don’t fall into the bland trap, like he said. There are colorful fabrics and spices, desert plants, etc. get creative. Mine craft doesn’t have palm trees/etc. so you have to make your own.

    Note to self: Everything doesn't need to have a function, not everything needs to be functional like it's useable, stuff like catapults, there's no need to go the extra mile of making a TNT Launcher. The machicolations doesn't need to be fully functional. It can work visually for aesthetics.
    My brain: Screw you, I'm going to ignore that note and make you feel irritated and annoyed that things are only for decor and non-functional.
    No really, I have spent some of my free time this past month thinking about wall design, tower design with lockable doors from the inside and I haven't even gotten to the gate part. Right, did I mention the fact that I plan to have a "pop up" TNT Cannon facing every gate measured to the exact range and have a layer of obsidian imbedded in the walls? I also have given thought about emergency exits, hidden paths, or how convenient it is for the soldiers to man the walls from thier barracks, the sight lines and the alarm system that uses bells hidden beneath the walls and is actually loud enough for people on the wall to hear.
    Have I mentioned the concept build of a 2 layer trench that has sponge, cobweb and honey blocks that's placed in a "serrated" fashion to prevent water flow and lava poured above slabs on the last layer and both layers are separated by a single layer of obsidian? I have also thought about covering the trench with a layer of green concrete powder held up by signs (which would be pain in the ass to replace every use mind you).
    At this point, what I'm building is something like PVP base (that's strictly for adventure mode) with an attempt to beautify it but it's so stupid and costly that only a fool would build for real. To some extent, I do plan on building some of these.
    Talk about the personification of overkill.

    Medieval period was very long, it started at the battle of Hastings and ended at the end of the war of the roses, so castles along each century within would change and very, for example after the crusades, Europeans took Arabian designs of armour and buildings and vice versa. I would include a lot of colour inside the actual castle and not just out in the village. Make different house like one that’s been whitewashed and painted yellow, you could use sandstone or for another build some white terracotta houses with a quartz stripe at the bottom to separate the stone and the whitewashed wood for example. You could include a dome stone roof on one of the round towers, or include some bohemian castle designs.

      I believe he will upload more frequently once he finishes all the planning for his new tutorial series. He wants to get it just right so there aren't any changes off camera, or having to move a house 3 blocks to the left. Once he gets the layout and all that done the way he wants he can focus more on tutorials, let's plays, etc.

    Pro tip - if you are struggling with layout or, color pallette or other design issues, make a copy of your world and set it to creative mode. Try out a couple of ideas and see what works and what doesn't. Then you can go back to your survival world and have a clear plan so you don't waste hours or days getting into a project only to decide you don't like how it looks.
