Back then, churches use to have normal chairs. Some drunk or angry Scot would start throwing those chairs at other people, including the priest. The church then installed pews in hopes that they couldn't pick it up and throw it at people. But to their dismay, they managed to pick up the pew, and toss it at someone!
My dad was likely the top authority on ancient Scottish history to ever have lived. I inherited his library, once called the greatest collection of Scottish and British history, family history and heraldry, in the world, in private hands, and contains more Scottish family histories than all the booksellers in Scotland combined. The Scottish games arose as a way to stay prepared for the next invasion. The tree tossin' thing was literally to practice tossing a log across a gully so you and your mates could gain some time and advantage on a less able enemy. 😏 Aye.

I'm from Nova Scotia, where I'm from has the oldest highland games in the world outside of Scotland. Lot's of Scottish farm boys compete, we didn't even have proper track & field or even Canadian football until 20 years ago so everyone trained Scottish Games instead. Big traditions here, my older brother and I piped as well. It's just what you do here.
+Agato Wesker - The Black Fox Yeah thats why the romans built a wall to keep you guys out. But sadly the england went on to rule but thats that i guess. Strong guys you scotts.
Log throwing by far the funnest exercise i have ever done, hard to find something that's not repetitive, that varies with each rep, and this is it; aiming for something also makes a nice distraction if you're doing this for hours.
I wear one occasionally. Means nothing but the fact that it is the only type of hat I remotely like. Other than the rare occasion, I don't wear hats outside of work at all. And I am determined to do it.
ryang2296 Awesome to hear it! I would make a caber too but I don't have the place to keep it when I'm not training without it getting taken. I hope to watch the Grandfather Mountain Games this year and start competing next year!
Something people forget is the event isn’t about the weight of the Caber While 160 lbs is definitely not light it’s actually below what most athletes deadlift or bench. The actual challenge and skill of the event comes from the fact that the length of the poll (as well as the bottom being lighter than the top)makes it an absolute bitch to balance well enough to throw it.
Wow! I'm, lol the "World Champion" of Caber Toss, on the Commodore 64, World Games, haha! Popped on to see it for real, and that's just AWESOME!!! Would LOVE to try that "for real", 'cept I only weigh about 130 pounds... Massive display of strength and balance-on the game, "getting started" is ridiculously difficult, and now I see exactly why they programmed it that way.
He's only really tossing a small fraction of the weight of the caber, since he runs it forward a bit and lets it start tipping over before the toss. The really hard part would be the initial lift. Pheziks!
werewolf15orlando But that's just it. Sure, he picked up the 200 lb log, which is cool enough, but he didn't toss the 200 lb log. He just added some more rotation to the very end of it after the log was already rotating.
aredesuyo it has to do a full flip. so the run gives it momentum, yes. kind of like rotating in the hammer toss or shot put, or the run before a long jump or javelin... but this guy does it while carrying a 250lb+ log then causing it to do a complete rotation
People who keep saying this needs to be in the Olympics. Technically it already is. It's part of the highland games which is pretty much the Celtic version of such. The games themselves are under rated compared to other things. Now if only we could back stick Martial arts and Irish fighting lol.
ah the caber toss now thats a real test of strength you have to throw a 40 foot telephone pole 15 feet and it has to land the side opposite from the one you threw it.
just cinch a 2" belt around your waist just above your hips, as tight as you can stand it, and you're gold as long as you pick up something within your fitness level.
How terrified must the Romans have been when they saw these man throwing with their bare hands projectiles bigger than what the biggest war machine in Rome could shoot.
ConcludedFever9 Scoring is based on how the caber lands. To get top marks it needs to land at the 12 o'clock position relative to the direction of the run up. If it falls to the left or right the toss receives less points. That's what makes the caber toss so difficult. It's not just about picking up and flipping a log but also about getting it to land exactly where you want it to.
+Aconite :P the only weight I've ever seen listed is 175. Not like it matters cause I doubt either one of us will ever do it competitively. Haha but whatever
i know it's been like four months but: traditionally, the caber turn (or toss, whatever) is scored based on whether the caber turned fully end over end and it's positioning on a clock face - the goal is to flip it to the 12 o clock position, or directly in front of the person doing the tossing
What are the rules here? Are there any? I have seen people toss all sorts of sized cabers. Is it like weight lifting so they have different logs of varying length and weight? Sigh, I wish there was commentary on some of these videos. I don't understand what's going on at all.
Basically the caber has to land on the end opposite the one being held, points are awarded for how close to straight upright the caber lands. Typically it's done with a log made of larch or spruce ranging between 16 and 22 feet that weighs between 100 and 180 pounds. Though the size has been gradually increased over the years so it's not a fixed forever set of rules regarding size and weight Edit hope this helped :)
Distance is irrelevant. Points are based on the direction the Caber lands, based on the face of a clock. 12 being the highest possible score, for it falling dead straight.
The Scots have a number of events that seem to be designed for war....imagine defending across a short wall, squashing attackers with various rocks, tree trunks and suchlike. It is a beautiful country, too bad about their neighbors though. -Veteran '66-68
The objective is to land the caber on it's top end with the log as close to straight vertical as possible, distance is unimportant. According to Scottish athletics the caber is a minimum of 16 feet and 100 pounds though many games use much longer and heavier ones
So this is how Norse Vikings threw logs at ships... they would and flood ships with them, the only difference is that a side would be sharpened to impale the board and haul
