Brilliant 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 This reminded me of the story of, THE DONKEY AND THE WELL One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out a way to get him out. Finally he decided it was probably impossible and the animal was old and the well was dry anyway, so it just wasn't worth it to try and retrieve the donkey. So the farmer asked his neighbors to come over and help him cover up the well. They all grabbed shovels and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first when the donkey realized what was happening, he cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down and let out some happy brays. A few shovel loads later, the farmer looked down the well to see what was happening and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was shaking it off and taking a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he continued to shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, to everyone's amazement, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off! Moral: Life is going to shovel dirt on you. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Every adversity can be turned into a stepping stone. The way to get out of the deepest well is by never giving up but by shaking yourself off and taking a step up. What happens to you isn't nearly as important as how you react to it." And that can be hard work👍💪more grease to our elbows 😆 charge be on the look out for the next lesson for they're coming. 😉
Nice video Got my subscription because you had your car cover on your panel van and had me look through your videos. Then I started to contemplate it was the patrol, then there it was. Can’t wait to browse some more of your videos.
Excellent! We are going to keep our palm trunk tall too; we need it to attach our shade cloth during Arizona summers. Also love the bird bath you used the stump for.
Thanks Moniquemonicat Since then I have removed a few more and incorporated the bird bath and trunk into a feature wall (another youtube) The birds have a great time in the bath. I imagine Arizona summers would be very hot, here in Perth today we are expecting 38 degrees centigrade
Hi Bryan that is the way to do it. I was doing 10-15 minutes at a time and between you and me that was more than enough. I was happy to get that stump out of the hole. You will get there.
thank you I did not know what to do, the tree part on top is cut off, 12 feet up. I figured it would just dry out and then I would push it over and roll it out to the garbage man, push it over . so it seems it will still be alive with the top gone. who knows; as long as it does not fall over on the side walk. with pedestrians walking by all the time, I like the totem pole idea,
Hi Ralph, if it is a big palm and you cut it off at 12 feet it wont continue to grow. It will stay standing for years. My totem pole is still solid and standing
I just had to cut down three cocos palms that did not survive a deep freeze (in South Texas). One was 36 foot tall. Those trunks are heavy!! I'm not sure I have the energy to wrestle with trying to get the stumps out. Kudos to you for tackling such a daunting task!
@@doug_hardman , thank you! Yes, I saw that on the video. I may do that on one of mine. I will need to dig just a little to give my chainsaw some room to maneuver. For now the other two stumps are serving as low stands for potted plants, so they don't look so out of place.
Hi Gizmo Im glad I have inspired you to start digging. Consider cutting them off at ground level or other options if possible because they are a pain to dig out. Otherwise dig a little each day. I had a big stump and it took weeks to get it out.
Had a nice palm in the backyard but was dropping too much crap and the puppy was eating the seeds so unfortunately it had to go. It had the last laugh though as it took out part of my verandah on the way down 😆 Now to attack the stump💪
Hi Trentis oops that is no good, they are heavy and go down with a thump. It took me some time to dig the stump out so take your time if you cant use a machine
Great video and you are a fitter many than I, and I wreck on I am about 10 year younger (no offence meant)... I may leave my stumps for a little while to see if the roots rot a bit in the damp Melbourne soil.
I' chopped down 3 big coconut trees 2 years ago and went about cutting into the stumps today and they're STILL hard as a rock. No rotting! Doing a little bit a day. I've made cuts in the top so i can try to fit a little hydraulic jack in sideways to see if i can push the stump apart. What a tiring job it looked to dig them out. i definately don't feel like doing that. You're about my age but i think i'm in worse shape
Yes it is hard work digging them out. You could dig down a bit and cut the stump below ground level or try banging wedges in the trunk to split it. Consider it therapeutic exercise. Good luck
i just got mini digger was wondering size of root ball on these palms ,shouldnt take too much to get it out ,putting in a small 15foot round pool for misses this summer got to stumps to dig out got the machine for weekend
The cocos palm I dug out in this youtube was a medium size, they do get bigger. Your mini digger shouldnt have any problems, it certainly is better than digging.
@@doug_hardman i burnt the big one last night as they were cut 12 months ago its still smouldering away and i hole has formed on one side ,looks like she will turn to ash by tomorrow morning ,
Hi Adriane I usually wait untill they dry out, get the sand off and cut them in half. Load them onto a trailer and take them to the tip or put them out on green waste verge pickup. I currently have a big stump sitting where it ended up, too big to handle at the moment, working on it.
We’re trying to do this, but are unable to even use a shovel as there are soooo many entangled roots. Feels near impossible at this stage. How long did it take you to dig?
Hi! I just bought a house with a big palm in the corner of the front lawn. I wanted to plant some flowers because it is just the tree and a ton of red mulch. I discovered I’m unable to dig because of so many roots. Will it take a long time after doing this to help with the roots in the rest of the lawn? Idk what to do
Hi Blessedbeaty, palms are great but they do make a mess when they get bigger and the roots are a nuisance. Once the palm is cut down the roots will be present for many years, however they will not continue to suck all of the moisture out of the ground and they will slowly rot away. Unfortunately there is no quick fix. Use a matic and chop your way through the roots so you can plant the flowers.
@Doug Hardman I was looking at your fence, bore water stains and easy digging soil. I have removed a few stumps by digging and chopping. Relatively easy digging until you hit a root, of course. But dig and hose to wash out the soil and see what's happening makes me appreciate where we are.
Had a chuckle at how knackered you were at the end, great idea, well done
Thanks Danial, I was really knackered but couldnt stop because the camera was running

Hi Cliff some of the big trunks I cut off at ground level and leave them, it just depends where they are.

Hi Doug. We just started seeing this tool on Amazon. I'm a fence installer in south Florida.
Ok thanks Brad. I have been to Fort Lauderdale, great place
Great video! Thanks for sharing this. Good work on ya🙏🏼👍🏼

Thanks Lozza, I just dug another smaller one out.

Hi Rick cutting the stump at ground level is another option, they eventually rot. When I dig a stump out it usually takes weeks
Thank you for this!
Hi Venus I hope it helps
great job
Thanks Isa
well done, great presentation
Thanks Glenn, you should now know how to prune, cut down and dig out a cocos palm (cocos palms 101)
Helpful, thanks.
You thought it wasn't a problem! This is why you have so many stumps, in fact more than anyone else on youtube.
I planted cocos palms for years, they all grew too big and now I have been removing them for 20 years.

lite up charcoal onto the trunk and let it simmer, it'll be gone within 10 hours.

Thank you, very helpful

You should try a B'root Bar. They are excellent for removing palm tree roots here in South Florida.
Thanks Brad but Im not familiar with Broot Bars. I looked it up and Ive never seen one here.
Be serious man, $1500 you want him to spend and still use manual labor?

Thanks Amanda.............cocos palm flag pole is one heavy duty flagpole, but I guess it would match the heavy duty birdbath stand.

Some hard work required but the system works. Thanks for your comment
Nice work.
Hey mate just wanted to ask, what do you do with the stumps after you’ve got them out? How do you dispose them?
Hi Adriane I usually wait untill they dry out, get the sand off and cut them in half. Load them onto a trailer and take them to the tip or put them out on green waste verge pickup. I currently have a big stump sitting where it ended up, too big to handle at the moment, working on it.

I have dug a few out and it is hard work Dig a trench around the stump and keep chipping away. You will need a heavy spade and an axe. Good luck

I worked on it for 10-15 minutes a day for a couple of weeks. I had to work my way through the roots.
nice work

Genius 👍
Thanks Hose
No gloves through this entire process? Hands of steel you must have. Or calluses. 😂
Hi Bodnarn It wasnt that bad because the digging process was actually spread over several days and I only dug for maybe 10 minutes each time.
Why do so many of your trees die?
Hi Robbie The palms don't die, they get too big and make a mess so over the years I have been cutting them down
The useful part is only the end of the video.
Tell me you live in Perth without telling me.

Hi Building Stuff, yes the sand is easy digging when there arent any cocos palm roots. The key is patience.
@Doug Hardman you're right about that, patience.
