I'm lucky to have been alive and to have seen Johnny Winter over 30 times, I actually stopped keeping track after 30, I may have seen him closer to 40 times in 70s 80s 90s no matter how he appears here, Johnny Winter was the best, and his playing here is still better than most.. Johnny Winter RIP
Impressive to hear your account and interesting because there that's what many of us would like to have done but geography and other obstacles put hinder to that, hats off to you!
I must say , Texas has been constantly given Us , some of the best music , due to Mr. Johnny Dawson Winter III , R.I.P. & play in heaven , just like here !
I have played guitar all my life. I saw Johnny the first time and got close to the stage, I wanted to see how he picked. I was shocked to see him playing with a thumb, index and annular finger picks, he played guitar like a banjo in triplets. No one had the speed and licks in blues and be one of America's best slide players. As a guitar player, try playing like Johnny with the three finger technique. It requires super coordination since it is very different from plectrum technique. He was an amazing guitar player. Edgar was also mind blowing from rock to jazz sax. They were both gifted and unique. God bless Johnny and hope Edgar can keep performing.
I have been a huge Johnny and Edgar Winter fan for over 40 years. Spent 20 + years on the road playin' some ol' blues myself. My parents went to their deathbeds blaming the Winter Bros. for my not being a successful lawyer or some other low life job like that. So thankful for the inspiration they alone gave me. Also, It did not hurt at all when SRV revived the trio blues concept. I saw J W cover the Clapton Crossroads note for note the day after High School Grad. '73, Hampton VA. A big thrill!
If the world were going to learn the many ways to play "pure blues"...Johnny would be the "ultimate professor." I've seen him 7 times and in my opinion...he is the "master!" I've never seen him even come close to making a mistake. He can do it all...including "acoustic blues!"
I saw Johnny over 25 times! He use to play small bars in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut my friends and I never missed him if we could help it. He was at his best in the early days. It hurt to see him deteriorate psychically but he always played and gave his fans a great show! RIP Mr. Winter God knows there will never be another guitar slinger like you!
Johnny was in rare form here. Regardless of the opinion of some posting here. I did see a concert around 2008? in Royal Oak Mich where he was under the weather. I had read that he was recovering from a broken hip. I believe that he may have doubled down on his pain meds. The bass player would occasionally go over and nudge him when he was drifting off. Saw him again 3 years later in Flint Michigan and took my son. He tore it up that night. In my opinion he is playing well here, regardless of the opinion of some comments to the contrary posted here. RIP John Dawson Winter and thank you for many years of amazing music. And thank you Bob Rama for turning me on to Johnny Winters amazing catalog of various genre's of music. I believe I have every album he ever did.
For those making hateful remarks about Mr.Winter and his band, Hes got more raw talent, staying power and pure soul than 90% of these auto tuned products of studios of late will EVER have..Hes been clean off hard drugs for years (which he took care of on his own-not some manager) and has partied harder w more big names than most that have came and went in his time..He doesn't have "to drag his ass out to play" or "rely on his past" A real musician craves new music and playing it for others..The younger generation should learn from this legend before they bash him..
Couldn't have put it in a better way my friend ! Johnny Winter is a legend who deservers the most respect ! I have been listening to Blues and Bluesrock for more than 40 years and Johnny is amongst the the best of the last Blues Giants we will ever have ! He played with Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix... Rest in Peace Johnny ! And to the bashers listen to his cataloque suckers !
Johnny and Edgar we love you and miss you so much. You both filled my teenage years with great sounds coming out of my 8 track player cruising down the road. I know both of you are rocking the heavens. See you when I get there.
Yes, the old 8 track. Right in the middle of a song, it clicked to track 3 and 4 !!! I had an old Craig 8 track in my '62 Ford with accompanying 6 inch round speakers mounted on the rear deck. Ahh, the memories. Thanks for reminding me Rabid Transit !
@@WestCascades yeah that's all we got now is the memories. Most of the old friends are gone. But the songs and the memories are still there and will last forever. Always remember those friends when you hear a curtain song.
Edgar is still on Earth. I saw him a few years back play with Alice Cooper and Deep Purple. That was one Hell of a concert bill. I’ve always said three bands is the sweet spot for the amount of acts on a concert bill and that night completely proved my point.
Damn sure played more notes that any guitarist. The illustrated man should be in the Guinness book of records. I’m 45 I’ve been list names it’s 12 years old.
I can’t remember the album title of my first LP of his, but I do remember killing (what I hoped was a rattle snake and tried my damndest to mount him striking from the front of one my papas cowboy hats.. Also I remember the ass whoopin, I remember You don’t play with a Stetson hat, I remember Johnny wearing his rattlesnake hat on the album. But not the title of that album
