Usually, shouting someone down is a last resort. The longer her plan went on, the more agitated Niles got… something had to give.
There are parallels to Mel and Maris so when Niles confronts Mel, it's as if he is exorcising the demons from his past. Because Maris had put Niles through hell for years, Niles now has the courage and confidence to take Mel down and stand by Daphne.
The difference between the past and the present for Niles was when he was with Maris, Daphne was merely his fantasy, someone he looked at from afar without knowing any possibility between them. Because of that, he was too afraid to stand up to Maris. With Mel, Daphne was already there for him and loved him back, which gave him the strength to stand up to Mel. I love his affection for Daphne!
Timothy Graham However Daphne isn't anything like Maris or Mel. He loved them both at first but they controlled him and took his love for granted. Daphne loves Niles for who he is not who they wanted him to be. #sometimeda2ndor3rdmarriageistheperfectmarriage
I'm so proud of Niles for standing up for the woman he truly loves. Now that is what I call a real man! One who doesn't care what others think. He had the courage to follow his heart. It's about time Niles and Daphne are finally together!
@@bernardbrown5336 I'll grant you he shouldn't have married Mel on the rebound, but he was willing to take his lumps and go along with her demands because he knew how wrong he was to have hurt her. However, I think it was obvious Mel was going to drag on their charade of a marriage as long as Niles kept giving into her demands or until Daphne got fed up and dumped him (which I think she was getting closed to doing from what she was saying in the kitchen). Niles was a heel for marrying Mel on the rebound but I give him credit for finally having the guts to end the whole thing once and for all.
This is more meaningful when you think about how in other situations it means so much to niles what other people in high society think and after the word would certainly spread around and he would be some sort of an outcast but he doesn’t care because he has the woman he loves and he couldn’t be happier with her.
Wow, you're right. This is why I liked Niles' character so much. I liked how his character developed over the series. This, surprisingly, didn't come to mind. Earlier seasons, he would've been doing his best to look good to these upper crust society people, but here, he not only stood up for himself, but didn't give a crap what these high-society upper crust snobs thought about it.
They cut out my favorite part.. After Fraiser said it was okay and Niles and Daphne left.. " Fergus, we have some fences to mend with the Opera Board".. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
And then Niles stops for a few seconds in deep contemplation, slowly coming to realize that it's the same situation he was in before. Mel would ask "who's Maris?", to which Niles responds, "Maris is what I used to think my life deserved. The irony is that there has been a bright light in my life for a long time now. I don't want to run away any longer... I want... Daphne." Something like that would have been so hard-hitting.
"Sham of a marriage?" Are we forgetting that it was Niles who proposed to Mel and then ran out on her on Daphine's wedding day to be with his beloved - and Daphine in turn, stranding Donnie at the altar with wedding cake all over his face!
It’s interesting you say that because while I rewatched these episodes, I thought whoever played Mel would have been a great Maris, if the writers ever wanted to show her Maris. However the more I see episodes with Mel in them, it seems like the writers seemed to do just that, with showing Maris since Mel could be similar to Maris, in my humble opinion of course.
Yes she was. And it just happened to be perfect timing for the next story plot.... Daphne getting out normally large and fat stressing over how to be the perfect girlfriend for Niles, which leads to Daphne going to a spa to cover for Jane's maternity leave.
@@SFAPowerhouse Jane said in an interview that she got so big covering her bump with boxes would not have worked so they decide to pretend she had put on weight instead. She also had to wear a fat suit and was working until the day before the birth.
I love any and *all* moments where Niles stands up for himself. Still hate the fact I didn't watch the show much during its original run (I would've been in my second year of middle school when it started, iirc) and have mostly watched it in reruns. I finally started watching the series from the beginning (as I never knew when Niles actually fell for Daphne) and enjoying it a lot. I've seen scattered eps over the years. This ep I've seen and boy did I LOVE this part of the episode! Like Niles said, what he did was hurtful, but she was pretty much acting like Maris (in general) even before this point in some ways and before Niles confessed that he was in love with Daphne to Mel, only a bit more warm. Niles was still being walked all over just like Maris did. She'd say "jump" and Niles would ask, "How high?" I know this is Frasier's show, but Niles' character is the most interesting to me given his character development. He seemed to think lowly of himself, had self esteem and worth issues, had confidence issues, and always felt trapped in Frasier's shadow despite how hard he worked for his own achievements. It's nice how later on in the series, he's with the woman he actually loves, is able to be himself and share his thoughts without being told to pretty much shut up, was happier, and even became a little more down to earth (a little) and not as snobby. This was a very well-written show with clever humor and made me care about all of the characters...sad it took me so long to fully appreciate that.
Oh my god, you're right. I wouldn't be surprised if they got this actress to play Maris, uncredited, when Niles had heart surgery and the hospital showed flashbacks and flashforwards.
this is season....8? Yeah season 8...Very early on in the season...Mel was manipulating Niles into pretending to still be her husband so it wouldn't damage her reputation. Niles was practically separated from Daphne for the first few episodes of the season because Mel wouldn't let them see one another. it was very nice to finally see them together...
Niles ex wife didn't love him at all she only care about her self and looking good but Daphne did love him for who he is that is why they are very awesome couple of the show
And finally the last obstacle to them being together is removed. (Admittedly, it wouldn't have even been a problem if Niles hadn't surprise-eloped with Mel. . .)
As an enormous Frasier fan, this scene is one of my favorites. It's one of those things you teach your little brothers (of which I have precisely 0 if you look at the genes, but about 15 if you don't) to do, but can't force them to do, until they do it themselves. After they do, you're equal parts proud and genuinely happy, regardless of what it might cost you now, in the past, or in the future. One of the few moments when a human being can genuinely be happy, I'd say, having experienced this several times myself, from the POV of Frasier. I guess what I'm saying is this: the world needs more big brothers. Especially those, who don't give a shit who they're related to, and who not.
Frasier is so sweet when he said " it's a small price to pay to finally see you and Daphne together" after the party was ruined

I love his affection for Daphne!
thatoneguy Niles is still Niles, who's to say Daphne won't get fed up with him or he with her? #SecondDivorce
Timothy Graham However Daphne isn't anything like Maris or Mel. He loved them both at first but they controlled him and took his love for granted. Daphne loves Niles for who he is not who they wanted him to be. #sometimeda2ndor3rdmarriageistheperfectmarriage
Niles is a jerk! He runs out on Mel, hurts her, and then has the nerve to berate her in front of guests professing his love for that English twit!
: really ? 😋
I'm so proud of Niles for standing up for the woman he truly loves. Now that is what I call a real man! One who doesn't care what others think. He had the courage to follow his heart. It's about time Niles and Daphne are finally together!
This is why it was such beautiful writing. They had to endure a lot to get together. Not just "We have feelings for each other now let's get married!"
Niles is a first class jerk
@@bernardbrown5336 I'll grant you he shouldn't have married Mel on the rebound, but he was willing to take his lumps and go along with her demands because he knew how wrong he was to have hurt her.
However, I think it was obvious Mel was going to drag on their charade of a marriage as long as Niles kept giving into her demands or until Daphne got fed up and dumped him (which I think she was getting closed to doing from what she was saying in the kitchen).
Niles was a heel for marrying Mel on the rebound but I give him credit for finally having the guts to end the whole thing once and for all.
I remember saying out loud, "Finally! Thank God!" when this episode aired. Niles being so spineless fir so many episodes was excruciating.
As Frasier said once, he was still waiting from that spine donor
David the Actor who brilliantly plays Niles is fantastic in this scene...I wonder how many of you reading this cheered as I did. Bravo Niles.
Well done Niles standing up for the woman he loves .
The Things he Does for England
I really adored Niles and Daphne. ❤
"Alright Ferguson, We have some fences to mend with the board"
"You mean it?" Awesome comeback!
Very similar to Violet Crawley's "Do you promise?" in _Downton Abbey_ .
He was all out of fucks at that point, so we finally got to see his snark without it's usual upper crust layering.
Thanks. Made Me tear-up big-time. ❤❤❤❤
Niles and Daphne are the perfect couple and have belonged together since the beginning.
They cut out my favorite part.. After Fraiser said it was okay and Niles and Daphne left.. " Fergus, we have some fences to mend with the Opera Board".. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
It would have been better had Niles said, "This sham of a marriage is over, Maris! ..."
I want... Daphne."
Something like that would have been so hard-hitting.
^^^ Love the idea, but Mel is Maris's plastic surgeon, thus she already knows who Maris is.
"Sham of a marriage?" Are we forgetting that it was Niles who proposed to Mel and then ran out on her on Daphine's wedding day to be with his beloved - and Daphine in turn, stranding Donnie at the altar with wedding cake all over his face!
Why? He wasn't talking to Maris
I really love this scene ❤️👍🏻😃👏🏻
I love this scene (and the whole show 😊 )
Absolute credit to the writers of the finest sitcom to ever come from the USA.
One of the most memorable scenes in Frasier. It was more about the drama rather the comedy here
Agreed. Although comedy is much harder to do than drama.
Watching Fraiser in 2022 such a great show funnier then friends in my opinion.
Niles and Daphne are wonderful❤❤❤❤❤
I think Jane Leeves was pregnant at this point in the show. Wardrobe did a great job of downplaying it.
This is one of the most romantic scenes movies/sitcoms in the last 50 years.
This made me so happy to see Niles finally with Daphne.
Is that Victor Garber?! With a British accent!?
Yes, it is.
Jennifer Hiemstra Yes
Not sure about the accent!
Yes it is
Yes. And isn't he delicious with that accent.
I always hope 1 day I will meet my own Daphne and really love her the way Niles does it must be so nice in life to find the right person like he did.
Agreed
This was where Niles proved he deserved to be with Daphne
"You've taken far too much liberty with the liberty taking." 🤣😂
Victor Garber-always a treat.
Yeah, I love this episode! I just had to cheer! Finally Daphne and Niles can be seen in public together and don't have to be all sneeky anymore! :D
She'd say "jump" and Niles would ask, "How high?"
I know this is Frasier's show, but Niles' character is the most interesting to me given his character development.
Welcome to the fold.
I SCREAMED WHEN THIS HAPPENED!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Amazing how this series could pack drama, a bit of chaos, a tender moment and some very good jokes in 2.5 minutes
Way to go Niles! Niles and Daphne aka Dr. and Mrs. Niles Crane are a beautiful couple because they have true love!
I hate to correct this but it's Dr and Mrs Niles Crane III
When someone visibly grows a backbone in front of you
"I'm just getting an early start on the candy drive..." lol
great episode, probably my favorite from the whole season
their relationship was hilarious because if they needed someone to pla Maris that's exactly what she would look like
The description of Maris and the way the women that was playing Mel she could have been the perfect actress for Maris
Oh my god, you're right. I wouldn't be surprised if they got this actress to play Maris, uncredited, when Niles had heart surgery and the hospital showed flashbacks and flashforwards.
+Andrew Bjork That would have been cool if the writers did that
I've always envisioned Maris being played by Calista Flockheart myself. Icy cool, ultra thin, tiny blonde.
Sammie Pittman nah, this actress doesn’t have a slight webbing between her fingers and an undersized tongue lmao.
although I watched very little, I really do miss great television.
Such a great show.
"keep pushing me you'll find out" is not something season one Niles would have said. That's growth man.
this is season....8? Yeah season 8...Very early on in the season...Mel was manipulating Niles into pretending to still be her husband so it wouldn't damage her reputation. Niles was practically separated from Daphne for the first few episodes of the season because Mel wouldn't let them see one another. it was very nice to finally see them together...
"Opera time! Opera time! On to the show!"
Now Niles is rid of Mel, he can finally get a full MOONlight.
This scene gave me a little tear in my eye, it’s so natural and so lovely.
*Fist in air* Go NILES! ^-^ That's one of the best moments ever.
Best moment of the series!
Isn't it funny that Niles found himself with another Merris? Glad he sorta noticed this before it was too late
If the storyline had gone differently I think Jane Adams would have been great as Mel.
I'm thinking Mel's character was Maris the sequel. A Lady Macbeth without the moral compass 😂😂😂
Frasier actually pointed this out, but at that time Niles dimissed it because he thought Mel would be the one
Niles ex wife didn't love him at all she only care about her self and looking good but Daphne did love him for who he is that is why they are very awesome couple of the show
And finally the last obstacle to them being together is removed. (Admittedly, it wouldn't have even been a problem if Niles hadn't surprise-eloped with Mel. . .)
"You mean it?"
Nice line, but I would've said, "I'll hold you to it!"
Try it! I think it would have been funnier.
Very similar to Violet Crawley's "Do you promise?" in _Downton Abbey_ .
aww I love Niles
He's a moron!
He's a hypocritical twat!
Mel: “oh really, and what are you going to do about it?”
Niles: “fuck around and find out”
As an enormous Frasier fan, this scene is one of my favorites.
Wow. Mel sure sounded like the queen of manipulation
Walking. First years of marriage and we walked a lot. Great relationship builder
1:03 I love how Daph look at Niles 😊
Finally !!! Niles found his balls 😂😂
Best episode.
Omg the funniest exchange 😆
This Jack ass will be out of your life by the end of the week !
Niles : You mean it?
notice how Niles and Mel's argument in the kitchen suddenly became audible to people in the living room
Yelling is funny like that
@@wufongtanwufong5579 omg I love your answer, lololol
thx for uplaoding i loaved it when niles got tough Mel deserved it she is evil
A walk? Sounds amazing 🥺
