    You are all missing one thing.
    4 legged crawlers carrying heavy weapons for infantry, like a ton of morters or anti tank luanchers or anti air and auto cannons. You are not getting a tank up a mountain at the same speed a mech could climb. The tetrapods could walk in a straight line, where tanks couldnt

    • @Verrin_the_Wyvern
      @Verrin_the_Wyvern Месяц назад +4

      Tanks can go up some pretty steep inclines and any uneven terrain like rocks jutting up from the ground could be flattened by tanks. Or you could just do gunships.

    • @theanimated6845
      @theanimated6845 Месяц назад +2

      @Verrin_the_Wyvern true, but tanks are heavy, loud, and I don't think (I don't know) that tanks could serve the same purpose as a mech carrying heavy weapons for infantry. They can't replace heavy armor, and that's why they would only serve in infantry. Example, you need to retreat and the enemy is still coming, use the mech carrying artillery to keep shooting as you move, or the one carrying anti air to cover your back from enemy C.a.s, not as the main force or fighting force. But as light infantry support. The thing with gunships is you can't hide a gunship from the enemy while it's deployed.

    • @Verrin_the_Wyvern
      @Verrin_the_Wyvern Месяц назад +5

      @@theanimated6845 But why use a mech when you can make a dedicated anti-infantry tank? They provide a much more stable platform (making it much easier to hit infantry), infantry can't under them (unless they're as flat as a pancake), and they don't have delicate joints which would have to sacrifice armor for even basic movement. Mechs would be able to be taken down by more versatile infantry wielded weapons such as 20mm anti-material rifles (a single shot to the leg of a mech would cripple it) while tanks would require much more specialized weapons (rocket launchers) which wouldn't be good against much else. As active protection systems improve, they may eventually be able to effortlessly intercept missiles, making obsolete the only weapons (besides large anti-tank guns) that could destroy tanks. Lastly, you cannot hide mechs from the enemy. Mechs are very big but lack a lot of armor. As mechs stand upright, they elevate their torso above any cover that would obscure the enemy's vision of the torso. At the very least, gunships could fly high and fast enough to be hard to detect and don't have legs on the ground where everyone is looking.

    • @theanimated6845
      @theanimated6845 Месяц назад +2

      @@Verrin_the_Wyvern all good points, but a tank is a heavy, expensive, and deadly weapon, but I am thinking of light infantry, where they need to stay mobile and might not have the supplies to maintain a tank. Also bipedal mechs are bad, straight up, tetrapods (4 legs) the body is not upright, and is horizontal, think of like a pickup truck that can go over any terrain. With a tetrapod with a horizontal body, you could hide from the enemy, if you have a short building you could crouch or raise the mech to shoot over it, where a tank would have to drive out of cover, shoot and then drive back in to cover, if it doesn't want to blow a hole through its cover. And you could easily outfit a mech for specific fields of play, wheel on the legs for urban warfare, so it could move on roads faster,and it could still be of use cause of things like short houses or hiding in places a tank couldn't get to cause of its weight, or feet that will let it go through mud or walk over dip in terrain a tank would need a bridge for.

    • @Verrin_the_Wyvern
      @Verrin_the_Wyvern Месяц назад +3

      @theanimated6845 Weight is not really an issue for tanks. For one, a tank has a significantly larger point of contact with the ground, so its ground pressure is much lower. This allows tanks to taverse terrain too delicate for a mech to cross, such as a bridge or on top of a building (if it's a smaller treaded UGV). And as I've just mentioned, UGV (unmanned ground vehicle) technology gives us the ability to make tanks smaller, so you can make what is essentially a miniature tank that can fit through doors or a tank with the armor of an Abrams (which is about 1-2 feet thick) the size of a car. Mechs would actually be bigger and heavier (for less armor than a tank) as the chassis contains all the same systems in a tank but you also have legs which are bigger than treads and need more armor coverage, legs also have more moving parts which makes them more prone to breakage and thus raises maitenance costs. And mechs would have to be bigger and heavier than a tank if they were to cross gaps that a tank of a specific size could not. Mechs also would have issues with getting their legs or feet stuck, such as when crossing mud, moving through jagged terrain, or stepping on unstable ground (which would give rise to cheap "anti-mech" traps). Tanks are also much more modifiable (such as adding a device on the bottom of the tank to raise it above the ground) given that they're lighter and simple in design (which means no legs obstructing things). Lastly, cover won't always be present or in convenient locations and being reliant on cover means things get bad when a tank flanks you at 40mph.

    AMAZING video!!!! I think when people think about mechs they think bipedal mechs. But I think mechs will look like tanks with legs at first like ghost in the shell maybe and then "evolve" into more humanoid bipedal ones, or maybe not we maybe just build centiped chassi whit a tank turret or put together a compliment of different weapon systems and continue with the insectoid look like ghost in the shell, maybe a armsuit eventually. So either way for me mechs will be...someday.

    The optimal mech build with current technology is, obviously, pneumatically actuated spike on one arm, machine gun on the other arm, maybe a grenade launcher on one shoulder, just ammo on the other shoulder. Then, you have tank treads for the legs, no actual head, and no window, just cameras. And maybe an ion thruster on the back powered by its own air intake if you're feeling fancy. Make it as light as possible using carbon fiber and aluminum for the frame with steel only as an outer layer of armor. With, of course, aerogel to block heat and a combination of low and high frequency sound foam to deal with shockwaves from any explosions.

    th main issues with that fight:
    megabots could adjust its height but it could topple at any increased speeds,
    to counter this, the makers used tank treads to move it around, but it couldn't round tight corners.
    ...they wanted a long range fight, weapons only.
    kuratas could wheel around 360 degrees, but the wheel base was large and most of the mech was design for cosmetic appearances.
    it had a turret ad missles modification options, but those didnt function properly.
    ...they wanted a close combat fight, swords only.

    I love mechs but can acknowledge their not practical on their own. Only thing I can think of to make mechs practical is a technicality for the sort of mind reading computers you see in battletech. Specifically that those give you the advantage of a single piloted machine with faster reaction time and better awareness but I imagine translating human mental inputs to a tank would be harder than a big biped given how different they are.

    The Megabots challenge video the Americans made was kinda hilarious. The Americans saw the Japanese robot and said "Let them fight". First robot hadn't been intended for fighting in this. But since they had it, why not? Both were never orignally designed for fighting and needed alterations to improve safety. America Prime(?) was made for the competition. This edited video didn't quite do it justice if memory serves. These things were like demolition cars crashing into each other. Even moving slowly they still got jostled around a lot. But it was not an amazing battle. The reality is, it's so easy to kill a frail human in these massively heavy machines by accident. One bad move by the pilot and the mech could accidentally fall and kill the pilot. So they erred on the side of caution rather than risk death. Reality just is less cool than cartoon anime mechs fighting. Sorry.

  • @Ryan-rq6dx
    @Ryan-rq6dx Месяц назад +1

    Yeah no. Mechs are always gonna slow moving, compared to simpler and smaller vehicles using equivalent tech. They are always going to be vastly harder to maintain and repair than other simpler vehicles. They stand tall making them a big target, and will be diffucult to armor, again due to their complexity. They will sink in any soft terrain because they will have high ground pressure from standing. They will (probably) be prone to falling over and struggle to stand back up, especially in rough terrain.
    In short, you have an extremely expensive to build and maintain, easy target for just about any enemy weapon. extremely difficulty to operate and significantly less capable at moving around than a modern(not even future tech) tank.
    And space is no savior for mechs. In space excess weight and complexity is even more hampering. And say what you will about the human form. It is nearly useless in micro gravity. Even low gravity makes for extremely clumsy movment in a human form.
    Mechs are cool. But in the real world i dont think they will ever be useful in military combat.

    When I saw this years ago after months of hype I was so disappointed. Now about how to do it right;
    Step 1: make some rules! Mostly weight classes and what constìtutes a victory! Take a good look at any Battle Bots competition and its rules for an excellent example.
    Step 2: make them remote and put in a dummy pilot. Remote control for safety. Seriously I'm sure a big reason this was scripted was safety concerns! With remote control, deadlier weapons, tactics and manuvwrs could be implemented. Battle Bots competitions can get WAY more exciting than this.
    'But then its not a mech!' I hear you cry. Wrong! You build it so that it can be operated from the cockpit during non-combat situations. That makes it a mech. Then for battle you replace the live human pilot with a ballistics dummy full of sensors, and remote control it from a cockpit replica sim pit. Thats right you have to use cameras, windows won't cut it
    Win co ditions involve making the opponents mech inoperable as judged by the judges, or delivering lethal damage to the ballistics dummy.
    Step three, now squishy audience. Film the whole thing with drones, and cameras in both the mech cockpit and replica sim pits.
    That's how to do an actual good mech fight competition.
