After you do it for several days, it becomes a piece of cake. I have an enlarged prostate and need to do this about half a dozen times daily. At first, it was a little painful and stung. Using one is more comfortable after realizing it is an art, not a science. Just remember that slow, very slow, is better than fast. Actually, slow is the name of the game. I highly recommend you ensure everything is ready before the procedure. Toilet seat up, hands washed, cather package opened, and cather laying on a fresh paper towel. Lub is prepared to go; I use Surgi Lub and many of it. Before I insert the catheter, I run water in the sink. Stand above the toilet and say, "Here we go again." This doesn't have to be a painful procedure. After I finish, I have a slight stinging feeling, but it goes away within a few minutes. I suggest that you do not wear underpants until the stinging decreases. As with a car, "Your mileage may vary."

I never even have stinging or burning afterward. By the way, why with pre-lubricated or hydrophilic catheters, why would anyone ever use those that require added lubricants? Unless it’s a cost issue for those without insurance. And I’ll never understand rigid straight caths?

This video leads everyone to believe that only people in wheelchairs need catheters.

My husband has just been offered Self Catheterization for MS, he's very much resisting at the moment as his first experience with a catheter was painful so he's been put off. Would you say it's changed your toilet needs for the better when it comes to the MS? I hope you don't mind me asking 😊 lou

Are male healthcare workers allowed to instruct female patients how to use a catheter or is this just another double standard?

I thought we were supposed to believe there’s no difference between men and women?
