  • I share my experience at self-catheterising and also share products I found helpful. I self-catheterised for about a year due to chronic urinary retention (due to EDS) before I ended up needing an indwelling catheter, and now have a supra pubic!
Please note all advice I share is from me and not to replace advice from health care professionals. However if you wish to ask any questions about self catheters please email me on activelyautoimmune@gmail.com or DM me on @activelyautoimmune
    Products I mention:
    - Hospital sick bowl/pee pot - amzn.to/2M7TCYf
    - Mirror - amzn.to/2MEdKAl
    - Another mirror I have - amzn.to/2T7HUNH

I had back surgery and over time my condition has worsened and it takes me a very long time to try to empty my bladder on my own, but now I have nighttime incomitance and a cath has been suggested to me and it has freaked me out, but now I am giving in to it to make my life better. Thank you for your video I don't feel so alone now. You are a brave person to share such a personal journey. Thank You.

My mom’s issues began after a lower back surgery as well. She started having a very hard time getting the urine going right after surgery. The dr said it was the anesthesia but obviously not. Two Years later, here I am learning how to do it for her. They must damage some nerve or something. I’m going to look into it!

Thank you for your video. I have trouble finding the right hole. I have tried several different mirrors and it’s a challenge. I haven’t tried sitting on the floor but I am going to give it a go. I think it will be much easier to have the mirror on the floor instead of holding it under my thigh on the toilet. what is the name of the mirror you showed first. The one with the light. I have sensory and autonomic neuropathy so I’m unable to feel my way. Lol. Sometimes I am unable to get my size 10 to go in. I’m wondering if I’m having spasms. I had urodynamic study that showed my muscles don’t work. I have to cath sometimes 7 times a day and you are right it’s no fun.

Thank you so much for making a video about this. It is so good to see a real persons opinion on the subject rather than medical videos. Makes me feel not so alone. Especially being young like myself. Hope your indwelling is going ok. I'm still self catherterising with lowfric and have been finding it hard very painful as I have chronic pain but have been persisting, sometimes not being able to at all with bleeding and my body literally rejecting it and sometimes my urethra grips for dear life in it's way out. But today I did it over the toilet without looking. I never thought I'd achieve that, I'm so proud of myself. Also been having ptns which may have help a tiny bit but not sure. Xx

I had a nurse show this to me today vs a video but came across yours and I'm glad I did. You did a great job. Don't let it define you! I had a temporary ileostomy bag at one time . I' will gladly do this vs the pain of a stay in Cath! OMG that was horrible! Stay strong!

Wow - I have IC and don’t catheterize; however, when I go in for a bladder lavage, they would use a catheter to insert the medication. IT HURT LIKE HELL ! Anyone who has to self catheterize has my upmost respect and compassion.

Thanks for the video really helpful. I've had my self catheterization demonstration today after having an accident at work this year. Sorry to ask I'm genuine. All the places of support have closed for new year. I have been supplied with the male catheters with bags fitted. Did you ever bye pass when starting catheterization. I repeat its my first day feeling really down. I just was shown a short video and it bypassed at the hospital first time. I was told not to worry at the hospital.

I have physical anxiety that makes me clench. Breathing helps somewhat. Would I just slowly keep trying to relax while inserting? Thanks for your video. This is a newer problem of mine so I think I’ll need to do this.

I jus had a app Tuesday I couldn’t pee at all I woke up one day with urinary retention I have to self catherize and I can’t do it I’m on day 3 now I did finally find where to put it in at but I’m so scared to slide it in I’ve been having my ex bf help me and it’s becoming a lot bc I don’t want to depend on someone to help me pee especially him I’m trying to get my sister to learn to maybe help me but these have definitely been the hardest days I’ve ever had. Lots of crying I’m super scared I’m scared I’m not gonna be able to do it myself. This video and the comments on the video made me feel better knowing others felt the same way as I do and I’m not alone. It’s very uncomfortable and it does cause some pain I am praying to be healed I have physical therapy Monday I don’t think I can do this.

Thank you so much for this video it I so helpful, my Urologist told me a year ago that I need to self catheterize due to urine retention and recurrent uti. I kept avoiding it as it is so overwhelming 😪. Now I really don't have a choice because no matter how many antibiotics they give me it doesn't help coz retention causes infections my only solution is to self catheterize. Iam scared to do it but i will do it. I feel not so alone after watching this. Thank you so much for sharing

I’m so miserable. I tried to learn how to self catheterize a few months ago and I couldn’t do it. My urethra is in a funky place that is not easy to get to. I tried the test surgery for the MedTronic Interstim Device. That didn’t work. Before that procedure I had a Foley catheter for 5 weeks. It wasn’t painful or uncomfortable, but I hated wearing a urine bag strapped to my leg. I ended up with no other choice but to have a Suprapubic catheter implanted. I hate that too. I’m in constant pain and have constant bladder spasms. I’m going to have to find someone that will come to my home and patiently teach me how to self catheterize. I’m scared, sad, & worried that the rest of my life with this problem is going to be pure misery.
