As some may recall, there used to be a time when trance music was stylistically boxed in. Either it fit the predominant view of high-energy uplifting to a tee, or a barrage of “this is not trance” comments would be imminent. But over time, even the most headstrong purists came to realize that trance music can’t, won’t and shouldn’t be pigeonholed. It’s about breaking the mold instead, to capture that particular feeling no matter the tempo or the sound. And that notion is echoed by the twentieth installment of his A State of Trance mix album series: ‘A State of Trance 2023 (Mixed by Armin van Buuren)’.
Brandishing tracks from artists such as Ahmed Helmy, Ben Gold, Bryan Kearney, Eelke Kleijn, Ferry Corsten, Luke Bond, Maarten de Jong and Maddix across three sides rather than the usual two, ‘A State Of Trance 2023 (Mixed by Armin van Buuren)’ shows that the essence of trance music reaches far, wide and beyond the once-imposed borders. From the slower, melodic house & techno-tinged tracks you hear on the beach to the crossbreed bangers played in the club to the highly energetic Who’s Afraid Of 138?! tunes that tears the dance floor apart, the mix album imparts that the genre’s diversity is a major strength rather than a flaw. And if we could just take that view and apply it to the grand scheme of things, the world may just become a much better place.

Dating back since 1998 with his first mixed compilation Boundaries of Imagination, I have been a loyal fan of Armin, and continue to do so. From his exquisite taste in sound, I have grown in learning, capturing, and understanding his essence of music. With his most recent mixed compilation, ASOT 2023, I have to admit that for the first time, I am disappointed. Here's why.
1.) Disc 2 is overly dosed with Ahmed Helmy and Armin's tracks from Feel Again and his remix of Transmission. Also, too much Maarten de Jong and Frank Spector in discs two and three. Also, he included again Inoblivion - When Darkness Falls, which is a track he already included last year in ASOT 2022 Ibiza. With his previous mixed compilations, Armin was never afraid to showcase raw talented artists. Armin has gotten too comfortable with his entourage, leaving out the rest of his guests: The Noble Six, Paul Webster, Paul Denton, Will Rees, Asteroid, South of the Stars, Philippe El Sisi, Liam Wilson, Alex M.O.R.P.H, just to name a few. The true sound of A State of Trance is being inclusive with its rich diversity of uplifting, melodic, and vocal. Armin heavily alienated the pioneer sound of what makes his mixes legendary.
2.) Armin always mixes roughly 20-22 tracks per mix. This time, he downgraded to 14 and On the Beach to 13, with each mix being 43-45 minutes in total. Before, Armin was notorious to put out mixes that lasted one hour and 18 minutes, with 22 tracks. He left out great tracks such as Ben Gold & Ruben de Ronde - Bliksem, Paul Webster - Ignite, Namatjira - Loneliness, Dennis Sheperd - Summer Nights, Galexis & Jason Vinterra - Redshift 7, The Noble Six - Moon That Never Sets, South of the Stars - Mechka, Allen Watts & Bogdan Vix - Apache, C-Systems - Atlantis, Steand - Stay, and so many more great tunes.
3.) Every year, I feel like Armin makes a bold statement by secretly favoring certain producers (Ahmed Helmy, Frank Spector, and Maarten de Jong). When we listen to this mix, it doesn't transport us to a world of beauty or to a universal language, but rather, a sudden quickness from a nap that leaves us wanting more.
In conclusion, trance music transports us to a state of heightened awareness and consciousness. The music engages our senses, our emotions, and our bodies, creating a sense of unity and connection with the world around us. In many ways, trance music is a form of meditation that allows us to let go of our worries, fears, and anxieties, and to connect with something larger than ourselves.
Shut up! We are trying to enjoy the music.
