Iron King (1972) - Ultra Gaiden

- SHOCK. SHOCK. IRON SHOCK. This is Ultra Gaiden, the show where I talk about shows and movies tangentially related to Ultraman, and this one stands out as one of its fiercest competitors. It’s a little bit of Ultraman, it's a little bit of Kamen Rider, but no matter what Iron King may resemble, its unique utilization of those elements puts it in a league of its own.

This feels like a show that could have gotten a really cool Gainax/madhouse OVA
Gorudan made me into an Ultra fan due to his retrospective and his out of.context videos
Same
I was already one when I started watching, but he definitely helped me get more into it.
He actually inspired me to get off my ass and watch that Ultraman Tiga box set I got for Christmas.
One thing I mentioned in my own Iron King video, Iron King *DID* have an on-screen return, more of a cameo but still. The 2017 film Bravestorm was a modern crossover between Red Baron and Silver Kamen. The movie ends with a modern, more robotic version of Iron King, shown from behind, hinting at a potential sequel. No plans have been made for Bravestorm 2 but there *IS* concept art of what he could look like in full.
Don't forget Red Baron got a reboot anime in the early 90's.
I'd be so down for more production notes in these videos, they add a lot more context for how the shows were produced.
just a couple guys fighting evil and developing a bromance
I watched this in middle school, and it's become my gold standard for Showa-era tokusatsu.
20:24 They made a show featuring two idols kissing and being intimate with each other ? Lmao that's genius
This was a childhood show for me that I found in a Toys R us once and I thought it was very unique and cool
What an appropriate show for Pride Month!
15:00 this scared ME! I would never put in the third disk as a kid because I knew that's where the creepy guys with the masks were
Hey, currently checking out this retrospective after Shin Ultraman awakened in me some interest for this franchise. This has been an incredible guide through the Tokusatsu genre and i appreciate how much effort you put into these videos. Thank you for introducing and showcasing the Ultra series to me.
🥹 thank you
Hey there ZaGorudan. Love your review of this show. I hope you review Super Robot Red Baron and Silver Mask some day. By the way, I saw this RUclips channel called Japan Hero, where he talks about Tokusatsu shows, including this one. In the comments, someone said that the Shiranuhi group is supposed to be the remnants of the Shiranuhi people, who were subjugated by the Yamato people (current Japanese majority) and seeking independence thru military means. This actually reflected the independence movements of the Ainu and the Ryukyu peoples in 70s-80s.
The Phantom Militia might have been inspired by the Palestine Liberation Organization PLO), a Palestinian nationalist coalition that is internationally recognized as the official representative of the Palestinian people. And the Japanese Red Army, a terrorist organization that was active from 1971 to 2001. The group was also variously known as the Anti-Imperialist International Brigade (AIIB), the Holy War Brigade, and the Anti-War Democratic Front. The JRA's stated goals were to overthrow the Japanese government and the monarchy, as well as to start a world revolution.
I always thought this show would be a great example to be rebooted in the form of a comedy by Takashi Miike.
I have the Mill Creek DVD release. I only got through the first set of villains. I always think that the little Gintaro guy, looked ridiculous playing the super tough guy because he was so tiny. A guess that character had a real Napoleon complex there.
Honestly this is my most rewatched Toku series, it was dirt cheap, a brisk 26 episodes, and it's honestly one of my absolute favs. Because of that I am glad to find some one else who loves it like I do (Also someone else who also ships Gortaro).
I personally see this series as more of a parody of the genre. It pokes fun at a lot of what the genre is known for.
Something I'll be adding to my eventual showa rewatch of these shows. Thank you very much for highlighting this underrated classic... even if it does have sexism in it.
It’s ZaGorudan’s new video, guys wake up
Thank you for bringing this gem to light!
For the record, Red Baron absolutely rules. Iron King is one of my favorite toku shows ever, so if you liked this it’s definitely worth your attention.
My friend lent me both Iron King and Red Baron to watch a long time ago and they were freaking awesome.
I remember grabbing this, and the Red Baron sets from Circuit City when they first dropped (just to date myself I guess). While I wasn’t expecting much from either series, Iron King surprised me with how great of a show it actually was. It’s remained a favorite after all these years, and this video makes me want to revisit it.
Red Baron is also fun lol
Imagine they make a red baron pizza commercial with super robot red baron eating a pizza.
tbh I could see some kind of reimagining/reboot type deal where Gen and Goro are a couple, and the macho cowboy stuff is just a way to avoid being openly vulnerable.
without the casual misogyny of course, or maybe tone it down and have it be played off as awful behavior in-universe
awesome video! i'll have to check this one out
This was a great surprise. It's a joy to find out that some of the shows that came out in the wake of Ultraman managed to match it in quality every now and again. I'll definitely give this one a watch if I can track down some decent quality copies.
I've learned about this show and Silver Mask while looking up production stuff on Showa Ultra stuff (since I'm watching them in release order at the moment), and I hope Silver Mask can get subbed at once point both these shows seem fascinating
As someone who owns the old BCI Eclipse releases of Iron King and Red Baron, they both have better video quality and properly timed subtitles on every episode. They're way better than the later crappy Mill Creek re-releases, but they're also a lot more difficult to get ahold of.
Yeah this show sounds really cool actually, aside from the sexism, granted.
Great job. ❤❤❤❤
I'm glad to see that you were pretty positive about the show. (I enjoy the show a ton, it's my fav none Ultra show from the showa timeline). You were able to look past the budget of the effects. Especially for those earlier episodes where they just do a flash bulb from the hero's hand to signify an energy attack.
And btw, Mach Baron and Red Baron are pretty great shows. I prefer Mach Baron because it is way more crazy with the badguys.
As someone who's casually watching these in the background while doing stuff, I was unprepared for fujoshiurinal at the end.
Soo interesting thank uuuuu
I like your Work
One more Gaia Clip, we are getting the Gaia Retrospective.
Babe wake up a new Ultra Gaiden just aired
Thank you for another great video! I would indeed like to see more series production info. Showa era tokusatsu productions in particular fascinate me since it was when the entertainment industry was figuring out how to make and market these shows and movies. I especially love learning about unmade tokusatsu productions, John LeMay's books about unproduced tokusatsu works are great reading. Maybe you could do a video on unmade tokusatsu ahows, I think Ultraman has quite a few. Whatever the case, thank you for all the work you out into these great videos.
My favorite non-ultraman tokusatsu show, and the only one to best Tsuburaya's contemporary output. I think it is definitely better than the back half of Ace which it aired against
Will we ever get a Kamen Rider episode?
Great review! I remember seeing the box sets for this and the Red Baron series at Walmart many years ago but unfortunately didn't pick them up. I would have never have guessed that Iron King had a Cowboy and SNL's "ambiguously gay duo" themes mixed into it lol. Regardless of it's oddities Iron King does indeed look like a fun watch
finally!
I R O N S H O C K
Iron King I feel is in this weird middle ground of these Kyodai Hero shows where it’s less talked about than Mirrorman, Zone Fighter, or Fireman, but has more clout than Silver Mask or Triple Fighter
For a current legacy, I THINK Iron King has showed up in a handful of stage shows? He might’ve ended up under TsuPro ownership given his presence on Ultraman Wiki, but I could be wrong
I needs to peep iron king it looks fun 🎉🎉
9:55 Is that... ZAT's theme in the background?
I know this video was made weeks ago but perfect timing at 2:34 with Mai's arrival in Year 2 of SF6
Apollo's gift of sheer, baffling coincidence strikes again.
Love your review, I grew up on iron king. Imo its Much better than Ultraman Ace
Good lavendertown cover
Great video. Have you thought about doing a video on the japanese spider man in the future?
Thank you! Covering Toei's Spider-Man would be a can of worms in of itself, not only would it need the context of the mecha genre (though it's not REALLY much of a mecha show since it's the same footage almost every time), but it would need the context of Super Sentai as well. I enjoy it a lot but I'd feel compelled to talk about elements surrounding it that require so much extra work. Maybe in five years. Also, like, everyone and their uncle has talked about Spider-Man, I don't think I'd be saying anything you haven't already heard.
I have a question Goldn does Capri-Gon look like a thin version of Goliath from Daigoro vs Goliath to you
Before Quazie's Spacegodzilla and Titanosaurus power couple (which hasn't really become a couple just a lazy drunk smoker kaiju crushing on a hard working sweeter kaiju) there was Gen and Iron King!
GAY GAY GAY HOMOSEXUAL GAY
* sees them kiss
GAY CONFIRMED, LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
would ultra fight and ultra galaxy fall under Gaiden or retrospective? have a nice day goldn and dimetrodon.
Retrospective. Thank you!
@@ZaGorudan You're welcome!
So the movie Bravestorm from 2017 crosses over Red Barron and Silver Kamen. Also at the end a new version of Shizuka Gentaro appears.
THERE'S ALWAYS SOMETHING I MISS....
@@ZaGorudan Heheheha
Can you do a review of Kaiju no 8 anime and the manga please 🙏
Fun fact (that you should take with an entire salt shaker's worth of salt as can not recall where I heard this please do feel free to correct me): Yukiko was going to be a recurring character but her actress left for other projects
This is true! It's corroborated in the booklet. What happened was she got injured during a fight scene, so she wanted out of the show immediately and they had to write an episode where she left. I didn't include that in the video because it's somewhat spoiler-y.
@@ZaGorudan well I suppose I was corrected just not in the usual sense
there is a raw iron king in youtube if you want to watch it , i waiting gorudan review to understand what happend :v
Dude where's dyna
There's an BCI release that's much better then mill creeks
Did the tokusatsu shows of that era use the same crew for each production? Each show has the same aesthetic when it comes to the kaiju stuff..for the most part.
This is a unique case where Ultraman's past production members crossed over to work on an unrelated show. I'm sure there's crossover elsewhere, but there's a reason why this looks like something Tsuburaya would make on a technical level.
Goro feels super trans egg with that “life might be better as a woman” line
I grew up with this show, and I never viewed the main characters as gay. I always saw their relationship as such good friends that they loved each other as brothers. They reminded me of Sam and Frodo. I love this show.
Ah yes. Sam and Frodo. Such good heterosexual pals.
@@Nightlystarter Correct, they were. Just because they showed vulnerability and love for each other, does not mean they were gay. Viewing the world through the lens that men can only love one another in a sexual way, is very two dimensional.
@@venomouslizardsI agree with you to a point but I also don’t think completely shutting down gay readings of characters is productive either
@@Cdr2002 One can view characters as they’d like to, but there are some readings that completely remove all nuance of the writing. Tolkien was a WWI veteran who valued the love and friendship of brothers and comrades, and he portrayed that through his characters like Sam and Frodo, Gimli and Legolas, and Aragorn and Boromir. Again, viewing the love that Sam and Frodo have for one another is simply because they are attracted to each other is a very surface level reading of a complex relationship. You have the free will to view them as gay, but gatekeeping the love that men can feel for each other as something that only gay men can express, is rather homophobic.
You think maybe you didn’t view them that way because those things weren’t openly discussed back then? Cuz like.. bro.
So when are we talking about Gundam? Come on with it Mysterio...
OK someone please explain to me how they got away with Iron King looking so much like an Ultra. I mean if it was any other colors then red and silver sure but he looks like a lost Ultra Brother how did they not get sued?.
Came across that in my research but couldn't find a way to cram it into the video. They initially wanted to use a more unique design, but someone along the supply chain demanded that they add red to it. The first robot of the show, Vacumirah, is said to be repurposed from the look they originally wanted to use.
As for how Tsuburaya didn't sue, your guess is as good as mine. The floodgates were already opened, going after one would mean going after so many other imitators. I'm glad they didn't.
Just in time for Pride Month! 🏳️🌈 Our favorite toxic power couple!
Can u pls do ultraman x
"It was definitely a different time."
Ehhhh... not really. In Japan to this day, women are still treated as second-class citizens. In other works where women are treated better, those were more progressive-minded shows. This? This is more or less the attitude toward women in Japan.
Stuff like this is why I’m always so sick of the “different time” excuse. Just because it was more overt in certain ways then doesn’t mean it’s not pervasive now
Gen and Goro are definitely a gay couple.
