Mexico’s federal commission against sanitary risks recently labeled six beaches in Tijuana and Rosarito as being the most polluted in all of Mexico when it comes to fecal matter.
The bacteria comes from raw sewage in the water.
The agency says these six beaches far exceed the acceptable health levels set by the World Health Organization.
During the last quarter of this year, 254 beaches throughout Mexico were surveyed and the six in Northern Baja topped the list as the most polluted as a result of sewage in the water.
The federal agency said in a statement “immediate actions need to take place at these six beaches to prevent health risks for tourists and Mexican nationals.”
The fecal matter is believed to have come from discharges of untreated sewage at a plant in Punta Bandera about five miles south of the border.
The state of Baja California has announced a plan to refurbish the Punta Bandera facility starting in January, but the work should take almost a year to complete.

Like others who have commented, many of the beaches have water that’s so polluted you shouldn’t swim in it. Raw sewage is a serious matter. I chose to not move to Lake Chapala because it is also polluted. I don’t want to live where I can only look at the water but not get in it. But, Rosarito and Lake Chapala do have many, many positive attributes.

While the beaches in Rosarito are attractive, what about the water quality? I have read that sewage flows, especially from Tijuana, often include unacceptable levels of pollution, especially fecal matter.

I would definitely avoid them after much rain. I wish there was some website that published water quality testing, but I haven't found any. Quite a few surfers go there. My mom lived in Rosarito Beach for decades and loved it. My kids would visit her at times and they never had any problems.

@DocPsych98 The water quality is not good. It varies with the current, winds etc. For the most part it is best to stay out of the water. I won't enter it.
If u do go in, shower thoroughly as soon as u are out with antibacterial soap.
Huge amounts of raw sewage is dumped in the Pacific 30 miles north in TJ and SD.
TJ doesn't have enough treatment capability with its growth. U S and Mx have struggled with this for years. 20 yrs ago it was pretty good. Today not good.

The Rosarito beaches contamination stems from inadequate sewage infrastructure struggling to cope with rapid urbanization. Insufficient treatment facilities, combined with factors like stormwater runoff, contribute to untreated sewage flowing into the ocean, posing health and environmental risks of great impact. Please research this serious problem.

LOVE the channel but this city too close to the border for me & too expensive. I'd argue Mexico has FAR better places with less crime, pollution and cheaper than Northern Baja.

Rosarito has the most contaminated beaches and water in Mexico. This is no lie! Check other RUclips videos to verify this. The Mexican federal government has rankings of water quality of all beaches in Mexico. Also, Rosarito lacks infrastructure, lack of paved roads, inadequate water distribution, and lack of drainage. Plus it's extremely cold at night 9 months of the year, with a heavy rainy season. You're far better off in Cancun or Cabo San Lucas where winter is not cold at all.

About rosarito or any beach city... tourist are welcomed because the money brought in during times of the year its helps locals and the country but for moving to mexico if you cant handle rough living and relying on yourself to be apart of the community and you move there thinking you can be in your own little american world you will have it hard... mexican we appreciate everybody but we dont appreciate being used and not being put into consideration.. people leaving to come to a place where they can have a stronger dollar when you move to places like mexico and you have the look of square stiff judgemental and scared looking european mexicans are humans and when we smell fear we will charge u for your sanity in a humble but obvious way that the people dont want you to last long there... be humble be respectful and cut ties to yourself and fuse with the locals break money off to people u genuinely meet and see people of need go out your way to make people happy its apart of humabity anf being humble that thr mexican thrives dont be a hippie all talking just hiving money out no do it with a concious so your respected when you give to people and not seen as a scared person that has no muscles in your arm stomach or brain
