- The sublime vocalist and interpreter, Jennifer Warnes began her brilliant career years before this record came out, but it was her breakthrough hit in 1977. 35 years ago, it began climbing the charts in Australia, after a successful run in America. While only scraping into the Top 40 downunder, it was the song that brought her to my attention, and i have been an avid fan ever since. Her soundtrack songs, rarities on compilations and her all too rare solo albums have become treasured gems in my collection and in my heart. I wrote to Ms Warnes several years ago, and she responded with the utmost grace, warmth and humility - all i wanted and hoped for but never expected from such a huge star and talent. She is all class. A voice of such warmth, texture and depth.
Please bring back the 1970"s ! It's the right time for all the music!
A very underrated singer. She deserves a lot more recognition for her performing talents. One of the best voices I ever heard!
Absolute!!!
She's like the great Linda Ronstadt!
Likewise. Me and my Girl when we met in '76. Only been married for 14 years, though
bobby7771117 true
She's the only singer who can come close
One of the prettiest voices I've ever heard! Loved her!
wow, accidently found this song and just opened up a whole can of memories
Dean Qualls I hope that they were good ones.
Same here. I hate feeling melancholic.
Ik. Fantastic song ! Big big hit !!
If you like this hit, here's another one from the same year you'll probably recognize:

Yep
I've always loved this song!
Jennifer was one of the most gifted background session singers ever . She sang with Lenard Cohen and Joe Cocker among others. Was happy to see her make it on her own! She recorded some of that eras most beautiful love songs.
What a unappreciated talent
So true..
I hate to say it, but she wasn't the absolute most beautiful girl during that time, but she could sing circles around them on this song. I can never get enough of her singing this song.
jennifer was a great singer. What a great song thank you for sharing this gem
Beautiful, always reminds me of Anne Murray, Rita Coolidge, Linda Ronstadt songs. Those were the years, and the ladies all over the air waves!!!
Jenny was from our much less superficial era when it was still about the music. How you came across on a video or how many "followers" you had was unimportant.
I've always loved this song!
wow, accidently found this song and just opened up a whole can of memories
Just watching one of my favorite movies “When Harry met Sally”, and this song was playing in the background. Had to listen to the song again. ❤️
Picked up on it too....nice choice of song for that scene...nice scene too
I go down that nostalgia lane, every lucky moment I hear this song on the radio, sends a reflection of a simplified time, that was golden in every sense of the word, Jennifer Warnes, my girlfriends loved this song, thank you for all those summer warm nights filled with your lovely voice!
Wish we could bring back the finest music like this and life will be a whole lot better
Lingers on within the soul long after this haunting song is over, one of the very best soft rock songs from the nineteen seventies.
when are they going to wake up and start making great music again
never......too far down the shitter
Check out an open mic at a local bar. There's usually some hidden gems there.
William Schleigh I think it's gone forever.
It comes and goes in spurts.
Something good comes along.
Something new, fresh, original.
It gains popularity.
Hollywood and Madison Avenue cash in on it.
It get's taken over by the Establishment.
It slowly descends into a ridiculous self-parody.
Everybody becomes disillusioned.
Stir.
Repeat.
That wouldnt fit "the agenda"
Darn I had forgotten about this marvelous song. Thanks for sharing.
+Jeffrey Crawford you're welcome; glad you enjoyed reconnecting with it.
She has a amazing timeless voice!Absolutely incredible
There was a few outstanding female songstresses of that time, and she is one of them. If you're curious to know a few more, how about Rita Coolidge, Kim Carnes, Carly Simon, Linda Rondstadt, Sheena Easton and a few more.
and Karla Bonoff....an awesome and unrated talent..singer/songwriter extraordinaire
Karen Carpenter.
Carole King
Carole King, Janis Ian, Laura Nyro .......
Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Melissa Manchester ......
Love this song and Jennifer's beautiful voice!
I agree with you there. She looks just as beautiful as she sounds. She is really great
Yeah...I was arrested to this song playing in the background....
Doesn't matter. It's all good 😊
Two Thumbs Up For This Hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never ever stopped playing this. Love Jennifer's voice and always will.
When will this music return? I’ll wait forever.
Never really thought about it until now, but this could have easily been a country song!
Do I remember the
summer of 77 in NYC,I was 26 yrs old, real hot summer, blackout, son of sam,I believe Elvis died, followed by one harsh winter of 78 highlighted by the great blizzard in Feb 78,good tunes the summer of 77 and this is one of them
Jennifer has one of the best voices.
Still love this 1976-1977 hit by Jennifer Warnes.
This song was Always Great at our High School dances. Dim lights, in the arms of that special girl. Oh to go back and do it all over again. If Only.
Going Back way Back 2 My JR High Days ❤️🌹❤️
Elegant song.
Wow haven't strolled down this lane in a long time.

Jennifer Warnes: Just right
Wowzer! ROMANTIC!
Could listen to her all night...
When Harry Met Sally. Scene on road trip to NYC when they stop in a dinner. Took me years and Google to find this song.
Dash. Time Life's Romancing The 70's. I just ordered it. 😉
still sounds so good....
Yes, thank you nobody wrote "any one still listening in 2019". Thank you God it is a miricle!
Haven't heard this in awhile
Great song for LOVERS
Great vocals! K
This song sounds like Linda Ronstadt, in fact I used to think it was her, it's that good.
This was ground breaking risky lyrics in the 70s.
Mr. Lenny Cohen thought Ms Warnes was the most underated singer...😊
Hi Dave. Thank you soooo much for this song. It sure brings back a lot of memories of my teenage years. One question though - I remember this song by Ms. Warnes being the theme song or the background song for a 1970's or early 1980's movie. I just cannot remember the name of the movie. And no matter who I've asked, no one seems to know what movie I'm talking about. Do you happen to know the movie? It had to do with a young girl in love with an older guy, I believe, and her love went unrequited. I believe that was the first time I had ever heard this song, and it had stuck with me from ever since.
Hi Gigi, thanks for your comments. I don't know the reference, but i did just google the song and the singer and the words 'used in a movie' and i found on the imdb website a reference to the song being used in a 1978 tv movie called 'Forever'' starring Stephanie Zimbalist. if you do a search using these references it might be the one you are looking for; although from the plot details i've seen it is more a rite of passage/teen love story. Cheers.
I think it was in the movie An Officer & Gentleman
Top ten hit
I've always thought she has a sexiness about her......
Oh the memories 💖🍃💖
nice. 💛💜❤

Hubby: "What time is it darlin?" Wifey: "Whoopy time numb nuts...let's do it!"
they dont make music like this anymore.
Always thought this was Linda Ronstadt.
They DO sound alike.
When Harry met Sally
this was the year elvis went to be with JESUS
❤️❤️
41 years old and still beats the hell out of today's crapola.
Got that right!
I remember sitting in a car in 1977 with the prettiest girl I ever laid eyes on. Unfortunately, she had a boyfriend. We were both college kids and on the radio was this song.I always go back to that one moment when I hear this song. Thank you Ms Warren. Miss the 70's. Miss this girl too. 😊
Wow, memories.
I miss them all😅
I remember being in the backseat of my car in the late 70s with a real pretty girl who had a boyfriend , Me..
Great story 😊
Your not wrong i still think of the lad i let slip through my fingers in 1966 he went back to ireand asked me to go there sent me plane fare my dad wouldnt allow it im 74 have a family but have never forgot him x❤
I swear this woman has one of the best voices I've ever heard.
Love this song in 2024
43 years later and i still get chills listening to this gem.
Me too..🤗😊
Jennifer Warnes is awesome.
Songs about the night are so romantic
I love her
no doubt
She had a very "Ronstadt" feel to her voice. Stupendous.
Sure did!!!!
Yep sure did
Yes, she did! When this song came out I thought it was Linda Ronstadt! 😳🤫🤭
Greetings from Barbados, I totally agree.
Funny you should say that, because longtime Linda Ronstadt collaborator Kenny Edwards actually played guitar on this song.
Love this late 70s soft rock sound. The production on these recordings was just impeccable.
I love the 70's. I was born in 72 & just turned 50. The music was the right time of night. I love Beatles and bee gees and of course my Monkees, but yeah long live the 70's.
Played on Country stations too
This is country
What a cool song.
What a songstress.
So nice.
Love it!
That’s the work of Jim Ed Norman, one of the greatest record producers in Nashville at the time.
Great song in 1977, still a great song in 2021 👍

And 2023..👍
Yes, 2023 confirmed (31st May) 😊
2024 and I'm 59 and still listening to this wonderful song that brings in all the awesome memories from back in the day !
@barbgarrison6721, funny thing. I was on my way to work this morning when "Up Where We Belong" came on the radio. Suddenly, I thought, "Did Jennifer Warnes ever have any solo hits?" So I come on RUclips tonight to see if I can find any Jennifer Warnes songs. This is the 1st one I came across & clicked it. I REMEMBER THIS SONG!!! Guess Jennifer Warnes DID have her own songs & I've even heard them😂
there are heaps of solo Jennifer on my channel
Same here only I’m 62.
Unlike all “singers” today who are auto-tuned, this was the real thing. True talent. I remember when she performed this on Saturday Night Live in 77. Miss those days!
She was amazing on SNL. There's a great Midnight Special clip on RUclips as well. Far as all singers today being autotuned, I would like to call your attention to Miley Cyrus and Pink. Both as real as it gets.
A great talent! A real star with no gimmicks! If she was on "The Voice" she'd put the judges to shame!
Richard Gerlach I second that.
Pretty too
Certainly would an unbeatable talent
Quarter moon walking through the Milky Way... best lyric ever!
Anne Murray mentions The Milky Way in her song Shadows.
Huh? Best ever?! Nothing introspective or enlightening about it.
I just posted this to my FB... and quoted the same line.
Though I was seven and a half and in second grade, when this was first released, like Feb 1977 ,I remember it full well. Very reminiscent of 1970s era, that mellow, soft rock quality. Thanks for posting, brings back fond memories of childhood and growing up as a kid, in the 1970s.
thank you Jamie, glad it brought back good memories for you Cheers.
You got that right 🍀🍀🍀😊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Amazing talent... amazing voice
Sounds like we r the same age remember hearing this on the radio
Just 6 years old riding around san diego...happy to sit in front passenger seat with my mother who loved this song. She has passed on but the song brings great memories. Love and miss you Mother..thank you for everything.
I lived in San Diego in 1977 and was in love with Betty...she looked like Jennifer Warnes!
@@SamLopezI Mira Mesa? Penasquitos, Poway area?😎
God i miss the 1970's.. alot of my favorite music from this era.. and alot of innocence.. we all got our music from one source. AM radio and the top 40 on sundays with casey kazum. Used to love listening to his show and hear what spot your favorite song would be in ..
i agree. thankfully there's so much great retro music on youtube.
I simply love the photos of her during her career...♥️🇬🇧♥️
thanks Michelle; cheers, Dave
4 pm, AM radio....mom cooking dinner, me doing my homework, good times.

Riding my bike to Mr Barger's store for a popsicle, listening to my red transistor radio, and climbing huge green trees. You just can't beat those AM radio stations when it comes to 70s music.
what you dont know how to cook? lol jk
Makes me miss 1977. This song was everywhere. Great voice, no filters needed. Like many artists need today.
The lady has 2 Grammy awards so if you don't think she is gifted, show us your Grammy. 🤔
I LOVED this song in the 70s. I wore the vinyl out. Jennifer is CLASSIC!! She deserves way more recognition. ❤️
Hi Jeffery, fully agreed. Not sure if you are a subscriber to my channel, but i have a lot of Jennifer on my channel already and have 10 clips ready to upload in a week's time to celebrate 40 years since her Best Of Jennifer Warnes album was issued. I wore it out! Have bought to cd's of it over the years and worn them out too! I just adore her. cheers; Dave
Sometimes I sing along. But mostly, I just listen. One of the best songs, with the best voice. How can you not love it!!💜
She nails this. The way a girl wants her date to know she want's them to kiss her.
Amazing voice.
