I know its a cliché, but when you look at the history of brilliant minds, mental crisis and psychic problems are frequently part and parcel.
I think no less of Peterson's contribution to the world (or him), because of his personal problems. I have benefited greatly from his insights, and he received nothing from me in return.
I am in this mans debt and I wish him, his family, and his supporters the very best of health.

i disagree that brilliance and pain necessarily go together. it appears that way at times, certainly in the way, it comes to the surface of culture with artistic types. have you seen the film Frank? its sort of about that cliche. but anyway I think the truth is more complex than a relationship between brilliance and suffering. and of course, we think no less of him for being human. who would want a robot for a teacher? he is even more valuable now.
His problem was fundamentally a reactive depression due to his wife's cancer. He was treated with a highly addictive anti-depressant that has a devastating course of withdrawal. It was the drug that wrecked him, not the reaction to his family stress. It is not, I believe, a mark of his intellect, although it is clearly very high. It was a mark of how important his wife and her health is to his entire essence.
You can tell this whenever he mentions her: his eyes light up and he is lifted emotionally at that instant. And in moments of stress, he fiddles with his wedding ring, which appears to buttress his intellectual resolve.

@@skullofgems8833 I agree with you. I think this relationship can often become associated because of who we are exposed to as a society (as an outcome of success). Just because a handful of brilliant minds might have mental illness won't be representative of the vast amount of people who you have never heard of and that may not be brilliant but suffer from mental illness all the same... I actually kind of think this association between intelligence and mental illness glamorizes disorders and diseases that are in truth detrimental to normal and functional life.
It's mind blowing to me how even under so much stress and pain he can present such a brilliant class.. I admire him tremendously

Professor Peterson has an enormous amount of adoring students he doesn't even know about and will never know, whose lives he has touched and to whom guidance he gives...
This video is quite old, but his stress was real due to many things I’m sure, his daughters ill health & his own auto immune disorders definitely. He improved greatly when his diet changed and her own health was on the rise, also due to his noticeable impact on so many, his book and year of fame. He’s returned to terrible health due to stress of his wife’s recent cancer & terrible prognosis (miraculously she’s now doing better) his previous minor benzo addiction came back stronger and walloped him, then he had his akathesia, trip to Moscow to save his life, and then more recently Covid. I pray for his health everyday.
I should ad his health to my prayer list. We need Dr. Peterson with us much longer. I imagine he is still trying to recuperate from Covid.

This man’s wealth of knowledge is truly astounding..
I am South African living in South Africa. I don't know if it's just here but we have a lot of men in their 20s and 30s who've done well academically and sleep around like their lives depend on it. So clearly their status puts them higher up in the hierarchy but their lifestyles do not speak to the whole disgust and self preservation thing. It's actually scary. They act as if they have no control over their genitals.
And that's why no matter how much I have to offer intellectually/emotionally /spiritually/domestically, I don't see myself offering those virtues to them in marriage. They would destroy my very soul. One tried when I was 26. A very bright young man doing well for himself socioeconomically but he is dirty and unchaste. I spent 2+ years in disgust and on antidepressants after realizing who he really is.
Your comment is greatly underrated and has helped me understand and put a lot into perspective. I was born in South Africa but have been living in the UK since I was 6 which makes me British by default. However, there is a South African girl I met last year who I've been talking to throughout this year and she's expressed an interest in me, to which I always asked why? I did consider the whole "want a better life to get out of the country and I could be that ticket out/green card idea" but given the way she talks to me, it seems she is interested in more than that because although I am from a 1st world country and I've done well for myself career-wise. I don't just sleep with every woman that gives me attention. I am selective in my partners and tend to focus more on my own self-development and growth. Long and short of my point is I can see where you're coming from and it's helped me understand and see it from a womans point of view over there because I hear about the STD's that are ever rife in South Africa, especially with lockdowns due to people just feeding into their senses.
I hope and pray that you can manage to find your peace and happiness with whatever you are looking for in life, whether it is there in South Africa; or you can find it somewhere else in the world. Stay safe!

People should recognize that A) this video is from at least a few years and about 65lbs ago. And B) that he was almost always under some kind of pain due to an autoimmune condition back then. And C) that he is no longer actively teaching at University of Toronto, and my guess is that he never will again.
The last we saw, he was in Serbia with still debilitating symptoms from Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome from Klonopin withdrawal.

Also, he's a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. He doesn't prescribe drugs. On top of that, go look at most of the medical literature on benzos. Most of it lists them as safe and with minimal withdrawals.
I'm always baffled by the kind of person who would take the time to shit on an individual who's in crisis. It seems to be the mark of a low quality person.

This is a *very* interesting explanation for why women will feel disgust for attention from the men in lower rungs of society, despite fetishizing similar attention from men of higher status.

There's no relationship between sex alone and disgust. The act of sex is a good thing if done responsibly, go wild. The issue is sexism and sex, that's where the disgust comes in.. The relationship between men and women has drastically deteriorated, men taking whatever colour pill and going "mgtow" or "incel" while engaged in pornography and picking up the sexist language is detrimental to sexual health because they are conflicted, they are attracted to something they hate, it is demented. Human beings are sexual beings but there is absolutely no room for sexual immorality and irresponsibility if we want to progress as a society.

The first part is demonstrated this past week with the GameStop saga. The slightly more conservative types did actually punish wall street by being more organized in the online realm where the transactions take place instead of just pitching a few tents like occupy did in a street where barely any actual trading took place anyway.
One of Jordan’s colleagues has gone on record saying that Jordan speaks opinion pretty often and delivers it as fact. Because of his platform, which he created, on purpose, to achieve fame and attention, this is incredibly destructive more so than it is helpful.
The bottom line is that people are easily manipulated due to our laziness. We would rather have some tell us something than research on our own. Read a book, formulate your own opinions... then and only then, if Jordan’s opinions agree with your own, watch and listen to him as religion, which is what many of you are doing unknowingly.

I would be interested in hearing Jordan's thoughts on conservatism and COVID (i.e. explaining why people who tend to be more conservative are less likely to wear masks), because this seems to be opposite to the theory that cleanliness/disgust and conservatism are related. In America, Trump clearly believes COVID to be a non serious virus that does not necessitate the wearing of a mask. I wish i wasn't as discust sensitive as I am. My nostrils close and it's hard to breathe (I thought I was developing asthma but I wasn't) and I also have acidic reflux and gag reflexes that make me feel like I'm vomiting all the time

He's very articulated and decently principled and I respect that. Yet I disagree with many of his points. The problem with "applied psychology" is that it lacks formal rigor and is mainly based on chasing statistical correlations. Basically every 25 years or so (a generation and a half) the new statistics invalidate the previous ones and new conclusions are drawn. The new statistics change because of technological and social changes - this game of ever changing statistics exposes the lack of immutable (or fundamental) principles. For example, I certainly cannot agree with the assertion that "agreeability is not a good predictor of success" - as long as you cannot say whether agreeability is contingent or not then it is as good a predictor as anything.
It hurts to see him ill.

I feel like I am a moderate person in the political axis because I am creative but also want to improve the old model. I think we can't just destroy really old ways to view the world just one shot. I think that change needs a slow change because it would dismiss of the people that are more conservatives but I think left wing as a point by wanting innovation and change. Its all about balance because Conservatives needs creative left wing people to innovate the system. But also the Left wing needs the right wing to calm the rate at which the change is happening otherwise we no longer know where we do aim and might having enormous problems. I think the problem nowadays is that right wing/left wing perceives the other as the enemy while both are core for the societies we live in but maybe I am wrong, its only my take on this. I think I am a moderate because I slow down and don't accept anything as "progress" way too fast and that I do respect people that are more conservatives that loves their values. But on the other side a value system needs to evolve and I wish more conservative would understand how important some things in society needs to change. I don't shame people for their views because how much thing I got wrong in my life? There's always a path for change and discussion on both sides of the debate have their point and needs to have their views respected. I am pro-choice by example, but I will never shit on people that are pro-life because they have a point too. We could argue our points but both sides of the debate has their reason to exist.
He has some views typically associated with right wing, but he definitely isn’t “right wing” per se. He literally said that marginalized groups are disproportionately affected by disease, which is a very leftist statement and looking at the numbers in many countries right now, it’s not untrue at all. Really interesting discussion.

god damnit full lecture full lecture. where can i find it???
I am thinking about becoming a HR Manager, im great at social skills and making friends. But my iq is unfortunately low. Its around 88-95. I love talking to people and making social interaction, but I’m afraid that my iq and learning ability is going to stop me. Do you guys have any thougths on that? Should I aim at a easier job or do you think I can manage it if im working hard? Jordan Peterson made me think twice about the education. ( I really appreciate every answer)
Mathias The fact that you are watching JP and asking that question is a clear indicator that your IQ is much higher. Sometimes standardized test aren’t gold. You can do all things through Christ. Good luck!
Based only on your question, I think you need another test. I would not for a moment question your intelligence if you posted similar writing on a different topic.

@@andrewh7868 yeah perpahs, I'm going to pay for a iq test when my next paycheck arrives. The test I took was only a indicator of my iq, I pray to the gods that its more than my last test. Thanks for the comment :)
Some people, like myself, were always horrible test takers. I'd probably be in the same boat if I took an IQ test because I'd be worried what is going to be on it. Maybe the way to do it is actually disciplining yourself to not worry how fast you are going to get something done because it only ever made me slower to complete anything.

i feel like his idea that STDs being less prevelant as you move up the hierarchy could very well be wrong.. musicians as they tour don't oft stay monogamous to one woman.. successful busy men often dont have time to humor a relationship and use prostitites, which see anyone from drug dealing thugs to politicians .
Nothing about the relationship between disgust and sex. 🤦♂️
