I was considering Monitor Audio speakers till I saw the construction of the tweeter. I should think it is par for the course in similar speakers. The companies are selling attractive furniture primarily that will get past ones wife. Hope you get the problem sorted soon. There is a lot to be said for balanced connections. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I don't think you should be put off this speaker by its construction. It's probably better than many in its price range. The sound is what it's all about really and I am still very happy on that point. Afterall, it was not Monitor Audios fault the speakers failed, it was 100% my fault.

Michael, your tweeter bad luck and curiosity at what happened ends up being a good lesson for any audiophile. I use a pre-amp to control volume with my PS Audio amplifier and don’t think the amplifier even has volume control.. so I guess we now know why. Thanks!
😲That's a lot of $$$ for a pair of tweeters. But I guess if you love your spkrs, there isn't much other choice. BTW, I just bought a tpa3255 amp. Very compact, amp plate and smps all in 1 chassis. Extremely clean sounding. You can consider it for your future amp project
I'm pretty sure they use ceramic coated tweeters in his speakers. If you want the speakers to sound as they should, you need to get the same ones that came with the speakers.
At the price of replacing the tweeters with OEM parts, it’d almost be worth buying something cheaper (and likely better quality) with a similar outside diameter from a DIY speaker retailer and redesigning the crossover to suit.
Bummer! I know how you feel. Had a cat put his nails in one of my precious €280 scanspeak mid drivers some time ago. No cheap Aliexpress way out of this. Good luck with the repairs.
Michael, that was bad luck. Invest in neutrik sockets and Amphenol plugs.... Tight as a nun's. Add a 1Meg ohm bleed resistor to ground on the amp inputs, also two 5v zeners back to back to ground (a simple anti clip device). This will effectively reduce the chance of it happening again.
That's good advice Peter, no more crappy Chinese Phono's for me. Expensive mistake. In all my years, it's the first time I've damaged a single loudspeaker. That amplifier does pack a real power punch.
Funny thing about those cheap sockets Ian. The same cheap sockets are available from a local shop here in NZ but they are no longer cheap but expensive.

bummer about those rca's. i prefer them to be nice and tight. in systems with separate pre / power amps i have the habit of turning the power amp on last and always turn the power amp off first with all volume contols set to zero. it's a habit picked up from using high power PA systems. oem drivers are a total scam price wise. good quality after-market tweeters would probably cost from about @ $40 + each. the problem is not so much matching the electrical characteristics but matching the aesthetics on your MA'S. i looked up other brands of ceramic tweeters and they are expensive
Chris, you are right of course. My excuse is that at times I might have 3/4 different amplifiers on comparative tests. Swapping inputs/outputs every few minuets. Sadly that makes me careless at times. This time it was a costly error.

If the wire rca is so loose then there is something wrong with the chassis rca on the preamplifier. should NEVER sit so loose. And it should ring a bell that says something is wrong!
I think it's something to do with the material used... Alloy? I recently found the same problem with the prefab interconnects I bought on Ali. It became loose too easily and I was living with unbalanced loudness between the channels for MONTHS! Could figure out and I thought it was my imagination 😅 Will move on to locking connectors in the future

Never ever use phono leads with those type of male connectors where you cannot bend the female ground outer lugs inward for a tighter fit. The thicker the female lugs the better, gives a good tight fit.
That's a good idea Gary. I do hope this is a one off however. I do use these speakers for testing so much different gear, swapping from one amplifier to another, accidents do happen.
I wonder that no loud speaker offers any kind of protection and let the hundreds of dollars drivers to burn away?! A simple one cent fuse could have saved the costly driver! No?!
To a point you are correct. The bass and mid might well be protected but the windings on a tweeter are so fine and handle so little power. I think in most cases the tweeter will probably still fail first.
I think producing around 150 watts of oscillation and instability at high frequency is an excellent way of blowing up ANY tweeter from any manufacturer.
Wow that is very pricey. They probably make them for about $25 each. Oh well that’s the price you pay for fiddling around 😂 I have RX8 and find these tweeters a bit shouty so I put a piece of felt in front of them.
@@Turtleback8024 It does and I do use EQ, but I think it’s better to begin with a tweeter that’s not metal dome. But each to their own because it’s dependent on hearing and genre and preference.

I understand the different quality plugs of course, but Phono/RCA plugs are simply poor design. The earth pin should always make contact first, not the live pin. No one has taken any thought at all with the intended use. I'm thinking of reversing the connections. Makes it none standard but it's better for me and my connections.

The problem of cheap RCA. from chinna is. 1. The size of the miter hole / pipe is the wrong size and has poor suspension in and out. Pipes have sharp metal edges after machines have made the pipe. 2. Outside size is also made inaccurate in size. You have to look at how 5 pin DIN. plug is made and compare with RCA. 5 pin DIN. is not made better if you think about the best possible contact with the least possible loss. in your case, the quality of rca plugs that sucks! When cable rca is so loose in the preamplifier plug then a bell should ring which says that something is wrong here.
RCA. chassis plugs you use on the preamplifier look high quality but are rubbish. I have owned some but never used them! The size of the hole and the outside size are inaccurate. the metal tube in the holes have sharp edges that are not removed. cord rca plug fits poorly inside center hole. Center holes have poor spring effect and sometimes rca wire plugs sits well and other times not. If it's a real neutral rca then they are ok. but if they are not, then they are rubbish! Destroy a wire with rca. and use only the pin to test them with. if the stick goes in loosely then there is rubbish rca. When you pull out rca. cord so it looks like they are sitting very loosely. if the wire rca is so loose then there is something wrong with the chassis rca on the preamplifier. Should NEVER sit so loose
Yes, I think an investment in some better sockets are required. I prefer using the old DIN sockets myself. These were used in the UK and all over Europe when I was young. A much better socket. The RCA is of poor design anyway. Who ever thought of making the first contact pin LIVE did not give it much thought.

5:54 ferrofluid in the tweeter, some remains on the coil after you remove it and now you have it on your finger
There are phono connectors that twist and lock on to the amp/preamp and they do not let go. fuses may degrade the sound quality.

You could be correct Gary. I will try to open them up and see what's in side. No obvious way in. Might be a case of undue force is required.

E Bay do have some of the earlier drivers available but not these. Is that not ALWAYS the case.

I meg is not enough i always add 50k resistor to ground & 10k pot .
