Damien Trainor vs Tawatchai Budsadee I: 2009

  • This is a pretty crazy fight that took place in 2009 in the UK. Tawatchai Budsadee AKA "Juk" and now "Lucky" is a wacky fighter from Koh Samui, Thailand. He has a very unpredictable style and uses wide range of techniques, some of which are taken from Muay Boran. His many titles include the Thailand championship belt.
    I personally trained with Tawatchai for about a year in Thailand and I saw him fight on many occasions. Literally, all of his fights are like this; he demonstrates beautiful Muay Thai techniques and always puts on a show for the fans.
    Around the time of this fight, Tawatchai had racked up an incredible 600 fights. I met him again about a month ago and he told me he had had 700 or 800 fights.
    His opponent, Damien Trainor, needs no introduction; a tough muay matt fighter from Birmingham, England. He has fought the best Thais out there and is considered a legend of the sport in the UK.
    This is the first of two fights between these warriors: Right at the end of the full fight video, after Tawatchai gets his hand raised, the decision gets overturned and Damien Trainor is awarded the win. The senior judge on the night decided to overrule the others to initially award Tawatchai the win, but after the other officials read through the scorecards and noticed that they did not add up, the points victory was awarded to Damien.
    You can watch both fights on the Damien Trainor RUclips channel.
    Both fighters are now retired; Damien currently coaches at his gym in Birmingham named K-Star Legacy, and Tawatchai coaches at the WMC Muay Thai Camp on Koh Samui, Thailand.

    That was some of the worst commentary- “gymnastic technique” “good techniques” “he’s doing brilliant with his technique” - not a single description to be had in an absolute stormer of a fight

    For any of you that think Damien won, check this.
    The Golden Er rules.
    "Punches always lose to kicks
    Kicks always lose to knees
    Knees always lose to elbows
    Elbows always lose to push kicks
    Every weapon always lose to push kicks"
    These were the instructions written by Arjan Prahmod, the master of the Golden Age gym Nongkipahayut, where if you know your thai boxing history, Namkabuan and his brother Namphon reigned as champions.

    • @Trainor103
      @Trainor103  5 лет назад +13

      Rajiv Maidment Remember that’s a translation and not translated accurately to how MT is scored (and MT fights are very different now to the golden era). MT is scored on effect so how a technique is delivered and how it effects the opponent plays a huge part. Kicks will not always beat punches if the punches physically hurt the opponent. Kicks can beat punches if the fight stays at range and the puncher can’t get in or if the kicks physically hurt the opponent. If neither hurt each other then the kick will be favoured more. Anuwat was one of the top champions in Thailand....he was a puncher. kicks v knees is about distance not the technique. If you’re in kneeing clinching range then the kicker can’t kick.... if the fighter can’t get in to kneeing/clinching range the kicker will win. Elbows only score the same as punches unless they cut so the elbow can beat the knee if it ko’s or cuts the opponent badly otherwise knees will win. Push kicks....again it’s down to distance. If you can’t get close and you’re constantly front kicked away, you’ll lose. Get past the front kick you’ll win. Push kicks aren’t the highest scoring technique in MT....and the later rounds hold more value then the early rounds. Hope some of that makes sense 😉👍

      Please remember Muay Thai 'television' was still not popular in 2009. We were sometimes treated to late night Muay Thai on Eurosport. Damien was on front covers of martial arts magazines from the early to mid 1990s when he was an 'adult' champion at 16 or 17. A British commentator who knows Damien, was always going to be excited to watch a British legend, holding his own against a Thai legend.

    • @winwatjana9453
      @winwatjana9453 4 года назад +1

      @@p-hawk1956 ...That's not true. Muay Thai fighting with various programs has been televised in Thailand since I was young in 1970. Thai people paid much attention to it during 1980 - 1995, as MT was first introduced to the world to compete with other martial arts, i.e. kickboxing, karate, etc. However, Muay Boran (ancient Muay Thai) has also been practised over the time.

    • @p-hawk1956

      @@winwatjana9453 Thank you. When I said '"we were treated..." I meant in the UK. It used to be televised on Eurosport and maybe Channel 4 or 5 at around 1 or 2am if we were lucky. Or we could buy videos. I began in 1993 and have enjoyed the Muay Thai and Boran culture since. I trained with the Trojans, Master Lec and Tyrone Herod for years. Damien is one of the best non-Thais I've seen, he demonstrated it here and on all his fights. His style was based on Ramon Dekkers', but in all honesty, I think his technique was more refined than Ramon's. The culture slowly gained popularity here in the 80s, after Master Sken, Master Toddy, Master Woody and Master Lec appeared in the UK. Now we all get to enjoy here, Yokkao and many fights and fighters that we missed over the years. Peace.

    I am not sure who won.... Damien certainly showed better technique making Tawatchai fall, but I feel Tawatchai was putting much more power into his kicks as visible from the damage inflicted on Damien's body (too bad that doesn't count as score) and probably resulted in Tawatchai becoming tired sooner.
    Had I not heard the commentary I might have favored Damien more but now I am unsure if overturning the decision was fair!

    • @mynameismynameis666
      @mynameismynameis666 4 дня назад

      comes down to judging and ruling style. in a western boxing oriented ruling, damien would have won by points, in a thai traditional "performance"-oriented ruling it could have gone either way, the split decision would not have been wrong, but i guess the crowd would not have understood a traditional thai ruling. tawatchai excelled at his femur style and even leaned into the ropes demonstratively, his evasions were spectacular. damien fought a straightforward muay kao style. from the pure incorporation of thai styles tawatchai was superior, from a damage perspective it was pretty equal, pointswise it would go to damien.
