      @@gator2813 you’ll get no argument from me. Bugliosi said in Helter Skelter something like it sounded like half of Hollywood was invited to a party that night at 10050 Cielo Drive. But after interviewing Sharon’s sisters and parents, the housekeeper, and Abigail’s mother, he decided the party was a myth and it was never planned or happened. Apparently one of Sharon’s younger sisters did want to come by that night with a few friends and Sharon told her she was really tired and let’s make it another night.

      Jan, after President Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's theater, in the aftermath of it all, people were taking pieces of the US Flag and other items IN the theater after all
      the authorities had focused on the President and the First Lady. There was no security left over to protect the Theater from looting on that very night.
      These kinds of things happen in history. Heck, items that involved other well-known or lesser-known actors and actresses have been bought and sold over time through
      auction houses. It continues to this day. Whoever ends up owning the items feels linked to the day or person involved with it. That is history. Would I want to own that particular item? No, not for me, but I wouldn't mind owning a saber sword from a US Calvary officer from the Civil War (1861-1865).

    Patty Duke is the only one I believe. Sharon may well have called her and invited her to come with them to dinner at El Coyote. Doesn't mean Patty would have gone back to the house with them, though. Btw, Steve McQueen was also invited to my 5th birthday party. He didn't show up. He had no idea how close he came to seeing a scary clown.

      When we were burgled at Easton Drive I called Jay in Las Vegas and told him. I think he was cutting Frank’s hair. He said,”Don’t go into the house” “I’m in the house calling you”. “ Get out of the house” he screamed. “I’ll send someone to help you.” I had already told him that our belongings were strewn all up and down the slate stairs. I went up to the carport and waited. After a few minutes I heard a motor cycle turn onto Rimmel which was our actual street. Even though our address was Easton Drive. It was Steve McQueen! Steve went into the house with a pistol, checked all the rooms, then told me it was safe to enter. He helped me collect our belongings and said Jay had asked him to stay over until he came back the next day. He asked if that was alright! DUH!

    I was NOT invited to the house. In fact, I had no idea it even existed, until after the murders. However, I grew up in the San Fernando valley. I saw Manson girls panhandling at the supermarket in Granada Hills on more than one occasion before the events of 1969. One friend of mine (years later!) told me she had been Manson's girlfriend and had had a son by him whom she had given up for adoption.
    The scariest brush with the Family came around the spring of 1969. I was still in high school, then, and was on my way into my history class (history or English, I can't really remember which) and there was this *dude* sitting in the back, feet up on the desk. He was wearing a fringed jacket, a cowboy hat and shades. The teacher came in and immediately demanded "Who are you?!"
    Not giving his name, he replied "I'm auditing the class." to which she snapped "Oh no you're NOT! OUT!" He dropped his cowboy booted feet to the floor and s-a-u-n-t-e-r-e-d out in a "suit yourself..." manner. Students came in and the class happened. It was the last class of the day. After class, I came out and found a knot of five or six girls clustered around Mr. Cowboy. he looked over and said "Hey! Wanna come to a party?"
    I thought about it for maybe six seconds and realized that if I missed the school bus, I had no way of getting home! Also, if I did not get home on time, Mama would have yanked a knot in my tail. So I replied "Sorry, I gotta get home." He shrugged and that was the end of it.
    YEARS later, I read Vincent Bugliosi's "The Family. There, in the section of photos, was the guy! Same jacket! Same hat. Same hair. Tex Watson. The book said that he often recruited Manson Family girls from the local high schools, including Birmingham High School on VanOwen Blvd. My school! I had turned down an invite from Tex Watson to party with Charles Manson at the Spahn Ranch. In my family album, also, I have an old photograph from the 1940's showing my grandmother on horseback beside the sign that read "Spahn Ra--". When I asked Mama ab out that photo she said "Oh yes... we always went up there on the weekends to ride horses." Wow.

      I have a piece of the plaster vanity that Manson was found hiding in when he was arrested, as well as a (preposterously over-size for the purpose) nail from the lookout the girls made across the road from Barker ranch. A bunch of friends and I camped out there about 20 years ago, before some idiot blew the place up. Odd little keepsakes, from a rather creepy camping trip...

      I met some friends from So Cal in 2005 at a vintage motocross race in E Tx . These particular men were racing the sidecars at the time ( I can’t describe how tough physically that is ) . A day before the race , my friend from Tucson said ask Richard about their run in with Charlie . Basically, they admitted to being involved with some unsavory characters at the time and encountered Manson and others at a house waiting for payment . My friend who I call Bear ended up being hit by Manson and ended up thrashing him quite well and dragging them out to a car and throwing them in . Tex was in car asleep and woke up but Bear cold cocked him. He clearly lives with some of that guilt of thinking if he had done something more etc .
      The most interesting thing was hearing that among the bikers , low level drug dealers, car thieves etc ,
      Manson was considered a piss ant and annoying little waif etc - the girls were rude, disrespectful and had horrible BO .

      Ed Sanders wrote an exhaustive and long-time researched book titled THE FAMILY. It seems to be the most detailed of the books at that time. It was first published in 1971, although he'd been doing a year-long story about the Manson folks for ROLLING STONE since 1968. It's been updated and that edition was published in 2002 with citations of his research corrections as well as new passages. I can't find any Bugliosi books called THE FAMILY... and while Bugliosi's book HELTER SKELTER is far more popular - thanks the the TV miniseries - it is at best a flawed version of Bugliosi's 'how to construct a prosecution case'. And even then, he fudged some details and used 'poetic license' in his claim to make it more 'readable'. It's a good book for what it is but Ed Sander's has far more corroborated info about the Manson family themselves, and Manson's role and reasons. HELTER SKELTER's TV movie took even more liberties but it does make for a sufficiently watchable TV program.

    Today is my birthday. I was born on the morning of August 08, 1969. I've always had a love-hate relationship with this day as it was always the hottest day or a rainstorm (or hurricane) would cancel out party plans--oh, and my grandfather died on my 17th. It's always been the bane of my existence.
    A couple of things I can confirm about that day and late-stage pregnancy: My mother was in Erie, PA, that summer, and just as far along as Sharon; the homes back then didn't have central air and pregnant women were literally keeling over from the heatwave that had gripped a large portion of the U.S. My mother wasn't the only woman who tried to induce labour so she could rest in the cool air of the hospital for a couple of days; I arrived three weeks early. As for "PARTY AT SHARON'S!!!" . . . . I was nine months pregnant during Christmas 1997 and San Antonio was having an unusual heatwave. My sister wanted me to go out to parties and doctors wanted me to "walk the baby out", but 89 degrees with oppressive heat and humidity kept me inside with the AC as low as it could go. All I wanted to do was fold myself up and fit in the freezer. Any pregnant woman (past & present) knows the stories about a party were bunk. But elaborate lies always get more attention than an ordinary bland truth. That's why my heart weeps for Barbara Lewis and Joanna Pettit who WERE there earlier in the day, and for Debbie Tate who WANTED to be there that evening. Roman and Winnie Chapman would have known about a party before anyone else and they never said anything to confirm one.
    It wasn't until Quentin Tarantino filmed "OUTIH" and gave me the most wonderfully satisfying and heartwarming birthday presents to end all birthday presents, that I decided to make peace with the day. I always take a couple of minutes out to think of Sharon, Paul-Richard, Jay, Voytek, Gibby, and Steven. Thank you for this sweet and loving video tribute. Many blessings to you, Scott.

      Very informative. One of the movies however got it wrong. Mr Hatami was with Sharon when Manson came to the house. Also, i believe Mama Cass “stole” John Phillips story. The morning of the murders John went to the home of Michael Butler was frantically ringing the bell at the gate. When no one got up to let him in, he somehow got up onto the carport and jumped down into the yard then began banging on the front door. He had been up to the house saw bodies on the front lawn and freaked out and for some reason went to Michael’s. Michael told me the story and a few years later i taped him, but his memory was fading. Michael and roman had discussed trading houses before Roman went to Europe. Michael owned 1896 Rising Glen former home of Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews. Michael wanted to make the trade right away, but Roman wanted to wait until they returned from Europe.

Trent Reznor's music made me physically ill to listen to. His exploitation was reprehensible, and Sharon's sister Patricia spoke up about it.

I recently visited the Hank Williams museum, and could not get too close to the car he died in because it was making me feel unwell as does the sight of that door! Hi Scott, Fascinating as usual. I always thought the house was gorgeous, the setting, the sweet little house itself, I can see why Sharon thought it was perfect. The fact that Sharon's own sister called and since it was the hottest night of the year requested to come up and swim in the pool and Sharon begged off, saying she was too hot, tired and pregnant for guests says a lot, she and her sister were close if she didn't want family to come by you can bet she didn't invite anyone that night. I was just a kid but my parents got a subscription to Life Magazine and I'll never forget the front cover with Roman sitting outside the door with Pig written in his wife's blood. I always thought that photo shoot was very strange intrusive, but I guess we all deal with grief differently. If I had the money I would have purchased the artifact (the door) for you and your collection. I know you would have treasured it and treated it with the respect it deserves.

    Oh, my goodness. I live in Los Angeles and as a teenager, after I had gotten my drivers license, would always take friends to the Tate house, circa 1970/71. Many years later when Rudi Atobelli still lived there and I should have grown up and away from such hijinks, alone, I drove up to the house again. Unlike every time before, this afternoon the gate was wide open and I decided I would walk onto the property. Just a little bit so that I could actually see the famous front door which alludes one's grasp standing at the front gate. Well just as the full house came into view there was a man looking out at me from the front windows of the house! He immediately came out to confront me. Yes, I was scared to death but knew to remain breezy. I don't know how I was so cleaver to think of this but announced I was a college student from UCLA meeting a group of students at the end of a street on Cielo Dr. (From the slim road there are 2 Cielo Drives and one could turn either left or right) Scott, you are quoting RA as saying the one thing he hates are sight seers to his property. I feel positive that the gentleman who exposed me was Rudi. This was a long time ago and I can't quote our conversation but it went pretty well for me. He asked me several questions and never confronted me as to my story and no mention of it being the Tate house. I have light blond hair, blue eyes and innocent physical features to boot and am not seen as a physical threat to anybody. I suppose I've gotten away with some stuff in my time...

    It was a second tragedy when the home was demolished, as if trying to completely remove the memory of the deaths of the innocent victims. The house and grounds were beautiful and had that “Old Hollywood” vibe and folklore. I’m also surprised how the house was never renovated or changed much over the years after the murders. You would of thought the door would of been replaced over time. Today when something so horrific happens in a building, immediately afterwards everything is redone to erase any remnants of the event.

    Scott do you have any insight into why the set for the Cielo drive house looks so different in Once Upon a Time? I get that it would be expensive, etc. to recreate it perfectly, and the proximity to Leo’s house needs to be accounted for, but it was surprising how much it deviated from the original, considering how meticulous the accuracy was with everything else in the movie.

    • @michawee

      The original house was demolished and rebuilt. It is now a huge ugly mansion. Tarantino found a different house he rented that he could use to have the Tate's be close neighbors of Dalton in the film. The film is not a 'true' story

    • @muckaxe
      @muckaxe Год назад +4

      @@nanyabyzness3234Yes I understand the real house no longer exists, but considering the amount of money and effort put into transforming locations around Los Angeles to look period accurate, renovating the pool at Jay’s house to film sequences that didn’t make it into the theatrical cut, etc., they could have easily built sets that resembled the house and used green screens and CGI to fill in the rest. In the context of the accuracy and detail in the rest of the film, it seems like a choice to have the set for the house look different.

    • @MrJest2
      @MrJest2 Год назад

      @@muckaxe True; it was probably a time-crunch thing. If you look at movies like _Zodiac_ (or any of the Marvel franchise flicks) it's clear that both the speed of production and a vast reduction in cost has kicked "CGI everything!!" into a whole new level in recent years. It would have been relatively trivial to mock up a set and enhance it with computer graphics to be indistinguishable from reality. But shooting schedules rule all, and post-production work can and does fall by the wayside if shooting goes over.

    I'm really happy that you emphasized the truth about all of those phones claiming that they were "invited" to her house. There was no party! People are so weird and want to make themselves and their lives more interesting; kind of sad. The only one I could kind of believe was Patty Duke's story, because it's true that they were close and Sharon may have casually invited her to their El Coyote dinner plans.
