I've been going back and watching all of your BotP episodes again. I like to do it once or twice a year. You do a great job on them! Thanks for doing what you do!
Thanks man. That must be quite some time you spend.
@@RetroCoreHa, yeah. A lot of times it's background for me. I have a newborn and nighttime feeding goes quicker with some headphones and BotP, lol.
Ooh, I've been there.
One of my fav speccy games from back in the day, the adverts for it in the gaming press back then were also lol
p.s. UXB = UneXploded Bomb ;)
Thought it was UneXploded Bacon.
I didn’t know this was originally an arcade game, I thought it was just a budget spectrum title with a controversial name. Keep digging them up 😀
The 68000 really was a beast back in the day if you could afford one. Game Sack did a great video about it awhile ago.
Yeah, it's a fantastic system but also expensive. I'll be doing a special on the FM Towns soon. That was another amazing Japanese computer that put the Amiga and ST to shame.
Looks like a fun game, but the music reminds me of a bad Heehaw!!! sketch LoL!
I'm not a fan of the actual tunes but the audio quality for a 1987 Arcade game is good.
This reminds me of the pig from game tengoku lol
Whats great about this game, Triangle Service (Trizeal etc.,) used this as a mini game featured on Arcade Love aka Gense love plus Pengo.
US GOLD had it's wrists slapped by the advertising standards agency over it's portrayal of women in its advert for this, after all of 8 complaints.
Boss Tim Chaney was having none of it, saying the advert was humorous and ahead of it's time.
Man, these days they'd be put out of business. In this day and age it's stupid when it comes to political correctness and I'm not talking about racism either. That is an issue but now even the slightest thing that upsets some stuck up dick is an issue. Sad days. Take Robert Palmer's fantastic Addicted to Love video. That is considered sexist. Bollocks to that. It's a fantastic video with beautiful women. Nothing sexist at all.
Cool I alwayz like your Battle of the ports 🐽🐷🐖pigz thiz tyme 😃lol never playd or heard of
UXB = Un=-eXploded Bomb
Very strange game!
I wonder if you could track down playable versions of all the versions of Rock'n'Roll. A top down marble puzzle/action game... I couldn't find any footage of the Spectrum version.
Failing that Snake Rattle'n'Roll could be a good BotP... Or Rock'n'Roll Racing.
I'll add it to the list 👍
@@RetroCore Great thanks.
It odd that you cover some PC/Computers version via Dos and the like but not regular PC on the Battle of the Ports series?
I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about ports running on Windows or PC games in general? If PC games in general, that's because I have zero interest in PC gaming or computer gaming. I've always been a console games as they offered the best arcade experience in the home.
@@RetroCore Ports running on Windows PCs.
I kinda think this game could work as a battle royale type game.
If it was released a few years later I reckon it would have been one.
Interesting game, never play it.
It's good fun in two player mode.
U.X.B. is shorthand in the military for "Un-eXploded Bomb", IIRC.
Thank you, now at last I can sleep! I always searched about the meaning of those 3 letters and I suppose an English people was necessary to understand this English acronym.
There is a programmer comment from the Spectrum version here:
ruclips.net/video/MpfcKR_x7lE/видео.html
The Spectrum developer hated the original game.
I saw it.... ouch.
Thanks for the link. I found out by googling his name, Ste Cork, that he left Software Creations after failing to port the Spectrum version to the Amstrad.
It seems that was a good thing for the Amstrad version
Okay. Japanese title- Mr. Pig. International title - Unstable and Dangerous Murder Pig. Not Wacky Pig or Crazy Pig. Straight up Psycho. And here I'm thinking they made Kirby hardcore.
Hahaha I fondly remember the commercial with the half naked woman with the artwork covering her breast...
UXB... Unexploded Bomb
Hmm, maybe
@@RetroCore Definitely, there was a UK tv series named Danger UXB in the 70's
You know a game is obscure when it's only X68000 and a bunch of 8 bit micros. Never heard about this game before! And for once US Gold did well, giving the job to Software Creations (they also converted Bubble Bobble).
It's just a shame they screwed over the MSX owners. That could have produced a much better port.
This was called Pigs And Bombers in the UK Press at Previews, when talking about the coin-op, which US Gold had to import a machine into the UK to work on the conversion.
Was this never the case? They simply got the name wrong?
Lol, I remember some of the names UK magazines gave GS Mikami on the SFC. Of course it is Ghost Sweeper Mikami but they had titles such as Ghost Angle and so on.
I always liked this game. It was ported to the 3DS as well.
Was it? I didn't know that. Oh, wait, its probably just Arcade emulation.
@@RetroCore No, it's a full port / remake designed ground up for 3DS - Psycho Pigs, released in 2013 in Japan and 2016 elsewhere Published by Bergsala Lightweight.
@@Fattydeposit Ported by a Swedish company?
Those poor, poor Spectrum owners..
Even worse those poor poor MSX owners, as the system can do much much better.
Yeah, I feel sorry for western MSX owners. Always being fobbed off with crappy ZX Spectrum ports.
@Rooflesoft Games Yeah, the Amstrad sadly got too many Spectrum ports. Just like the MSX. The curse of the ZX Spectrum
Wouldn't Bomber Pig be a better title if you needed to rename the game, anyway?
Anyway, NMK were the guys behind quite a few fun obscure games, and Zed Blade. The only game I recall playing from them was Bombjack Twin.
Bomber Pig certainly would've worked in a US release.
I'm quite the fan of Zed Blade.
UneXploded Bomb
Love this one on the c64! Really good music by the Follin brothers as usual.
Why does the Arcade and Sharp music sound so detuned? A different scale / tuning of the instrument?
French Mag, Game, awarded this a joystick award, but review seems to cover CPC, Spectrum and CPC versions.
Amstrad y Spectrum press start screen pig will give me nightmares, I sure of it ...
XD
Especially the Amstrad on as its coloured in better.
Never heard of this one.
It's an obscure one, that's for sure.
@@RetroCore I wonder if that's how so many of them end up getting 8-bit computer ports. You have a publisher who likes to buy up the rights to games on the cheap, so it stands to reason they'd go shopping for arcade games that no one's heard of. Ones no one is bidding against them on.
that was the colecovision business model also
I had an Amstrad CPC 464, so only green for me, but this one was one of my all time favourites. Thanks a lot for the video!!! ♥️
Played as Psycho Pigs on C64 long time ago, fun game, can be a little repetitive but in 2 player mode was a blast.
Today can be played on PS4 with an emulation of the arcade original as an Arcade Archive release under the original name Butasan
Hamster Corp. added Buta-san to the Nintendo Switch.
One of my uncles who's into real bluegrass music heard this game's soundtrack and thought it sounded like a bumble bee.
The game was developed by Jaleco's associated developer NMK. NMK also worked for UPL and maybe Sammy. They later added their own soundchip in some RAIZING arcade games, including Battle Garegga and Armed Police Batrider. They ended as a mechanical arcade manufacturer.
Buta-san later appeared in Jaleco's Game Boy game Hero Shuugou!! Pinball Party and their Game Tengoku series as one of the playable characters.
I think there was a 3DS remake too but I have no idea what the quality of it is. I think it’s under the Psycho Pigs name
I have this one on the 3DS, it's a good port with a graphical overhaul.
I didn't know it was on the 3DS
Hahahaha. i just looooove that intro music of the video Mark. 86)
Anthony...
Remember when this came out on the spectrum, it was claimed that the arcade game hadn’t seen a uk release. Main problem was that all the pigs were the same colour on the spectrum so you couldn’t tell the types apart
This is one of those games that probably would have played better WITH colourclash!
What an odd game....
I do have a suggestion for you in future shows though. (It's a console game)
How about Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse? Originally released on the Mega Drive, this game featured some of the most impressive graphical effects for the console, alongside fluid animation with reasonably large sprites! There's only 3 ports of it, but it would make for an interesting show (especially the PS1 version).
I am actually concidering that game. It will be shown in the future. We have Mega Drive, Mega CD, SFC/SNES and PlayStation versions that I know of.
Hi Mark. Thank you very much for covering this game. I remember playing this game the first time on the Speccy when I was little and highly enjoyed it. Back then when I was little I had no idea there was an original Arcade version despite being a huge Arcade gamer as well as a huge Speccy gamer. I believe U.X.B. stands for UneXploded Bomb. Also, the box/plastic cassette case cover artwork for the western home computer ports is somewhat intriguing lol. Interestingly, it also shows screenshots from the other western home computer versions and not just the Speccy version: www.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/games-inlays/p/PsychoPigsU.X.B..jpg.
I can imagine the used the same box for all versions but just changed the text on the from which says what machine it is for.
After taking some flak over it's double page advert for Pyscho Pigs UXB here in the UK(2 young lads gloating at a picture of a scantily clad lass and one saying, I know which one I'd rather play with.. Letters pages weren't too kind on the lass, suggesting she was either overweight or 8 months pregnant 😂)...
A US Gold insider came clean and admitted the advert was deliberately O. T. T, as they knew the game itself was very obscure and would need an awful lot of publicity.
Lol, well it worked. Sad how things like that can't be done now.
Remember those ads in the mags that showed a load of tech gear and consoles with scantaly clad women drooped over them? They sure got my attention as a teen. So much so that I still remember the image now!
Thing is, I don't remember if they were UK or US based adds. I think they may have been in UK magazine ads.
It has very playful music and known for frantic gameplay.
Looks very fun. Bomberman without boundaries in the way.
You know what I like to do Mark? At the start of your compare videos I turn away while you show all the systems you're comparing it on so I can be surprised with all the choices you've made. Maybe I'm just weird. Lol. I actually saw this game once a long time ago at an arcade at Great America in Illinois.
Hehe, that's fun. Nice surprise I guess.
I remember this game, I used to play it at my friends place in the 80s on his commodore 64....... Man, it was great times 💕
was a fun game for C64 and had the original (as im remember). The only little issue is the whack-a-mole took a bit too long time to complete, due the time here is longer when compared to other versions. Still a good port of a game im newer heard about arcade version before long time after.
Yeah, it was kind of odd the way the whack-a-mole section is twice the time as the other versions. It kind of made that section rather boring.
Despite being born a couple of years after 1979, I immediately thought of Danger UXB when I saw the title. I guess it must have been repeated on the telly during my youth, since I've never seen the show. Still, a pretty obscure game nonetheless.
I was born in 1975 but have no idea about that show.
Was there ever any doubt?
Now that tunes gonna be stuck in my head
😁
I'm surprised the MSX struggled so hard with this one, since it's normally ahead of the ZX Spectrum. Bad programming for sure! The rest are all very good though, but this seems like the type of game that wouldn't be fun for very long.
It's actually a lot of fun in two player mode.
Do the Amstrad CPC and MSX ever do better than the ZX Spectrum, when they get a direct port from a game written for the Spectrum?
Played back on the day on the CPC and what a great port was.
Ahh new one to add to mame....
Player is now dead
I've never heard of this one, but it looks like a lot of fun.
Never heard of this, looks like good fun for a small time.
Played a lot of C64 port, very fun game, once again, i wonder why consoles didnt got conversions? And once again, shame MSX is just Speccy conversion, they could at least add color to pigs.
It is bad that many wester MSX games were just crappy ZX Spectrum ports. The MSX is a far more capable machine than the speccy and CPC.
@@RetroCore Why do you say that?
I am unsure if US Gold did many console games when this was released
Most us good game that I’ve played are shite. Refreshing to see a decent port. 👍
None of the multiformat and Amstrad magazines I read at the time liked it though
Looks like a cute and fun time with friends. City Connection (Or whatever Jaleco's current studio is called) should remake this one like they did with fucking Soldam and Penguin Wars. And didn't the player character appear in Game Tengoku alonside other Jaleco characters?
That's right, the main pig is in Game Tengoku.
@@RetroCore that game's on PS4 in English, right? Might wanna try it out, but I'm dead set on getting Ikaruga, Twisted Metal: Black (The best one besides 2, Small Brawl, Integral and the 2012 reboot) and the rest of the DMC series, Ninja Theory's weird and polarizing DmC included
@@RetroCore and the piggy is voiced by Akio Otsuka, no less. Basically making a cartoony character into a badass by default
Hold on a minute. You gave an Amstrad game a good review. Too much Saki perhaps ?
It has happened before 😊. Amstrad games can be good when done right. Sadly they're mostly crappy spectrum ports.
ZX Spectrum curse
So basically these is Bomberman but without ability to plant the bomb, wall around player and each player get permanent Hand Power Up where in Bomberman use for pick bomb and toss it, btw it's really shame all these port for Computer only set aside SNES I think Genesis/Mega Drive can pull these chaos game without any problem thanks to their blast processing.
It's more like a power stone type game but overhead.
@@RetroCore but power stone is fighting battle royal while these use Bomb like Bomberman, well Bomberman also battle royal type game and use Bomb as main attack now I really miss Hudson soft and talking about fighting game I also miss Bloody Roar, curse you whatever the reason Bloody Roar dead.
All machines featured in this video. is able to pull games like this without any problems when coded well. Edit: Maybe not the ZX Spectrum due to colour problems that is built into its hardware
Can you please do a Battle of the Ports episode on Resident Evil 4, Retro Core?
Don't know if there are enough different versions of the game for him to do it. The only one with any real difference would be the Wii version. Plus he mainly does older arcade games, but not always so who knows?
Sorry, I dont have access to all versions of it.
NMK, masters of cute. I miss them.
So many great gaming companies have gone.
Imagine this one with a four or more player mode. Total chaos, but a ton of fun.
I love these unusual games that you show us. Thanks!
You're welcome. Show 300 will be a very popular game though. I still think you'll like it.
I have no doubt that I’ll like it.
Played for the first time 3 years ago and turned instantly in one of my favourite arcade games of all time. And have a good Amstrad version too! Lovely this pig with the cute godzilla disguise XD. Thanks for this BotP Mark!
Sme here. I'd only heard of this a year or so ago. Fantastic game, especially in 2 player mode.
