My grandad built Lightnings at Strand Rd , Preston. I remember seeing these flying over as a kid in the 70's and was always mightily impressed. What an aircraft!
Was in the airborne tufty club and went to binbrook for a week, watching these in real life was just mind blowing.. the qra was really impressive, 2 taking off almost side by side, the noise, the instant climb rate… so wish they had some still flying in the uk… 2 jet engines and some nutter sat on top of them…
Slightly damp, like somebody dropped the ice bucket on the titanic, the wettest airshow ever, but the most memorable airshow of my life.no health and saftey either.incredible low, almost supersonic 9ship display that will never happen again by any aircraft at any pubic display. Still makes my neck tingle watching the videos of the alast lightning show
Oh WOW - the sound of freedom!! :-) Thx for the post - love the F3 variant with tactical paint scheme! That was some *serious* piece of machine! Great to watch and hear!
I joined the Air Force in 1987, but by the time I got to the UK in 1989, I don't think there were any actively flying, but I could be wrong about that. I'm just upset that I never got the chance to see one fly. Amazing aircraft. So much POWER!!!
Wow look at the vapour on the wings when pulling g epic bit of kit not a dog fighter an interceptor which was wicked quick this and the Vulcan are my favourite ever aircraft
Again one of my favourites, I believe that the ceiling for this aircraft is still secret, but its climb to height speed was awesome, I know one or two are in private hands and still being flown in South Africa as I saw a documentary with professor Brian Cox where he went up in one to see the curvature of the earth and the thin blue atmosphere where it changed to space and blackness. Thats how high this aircraft flew.
A Lightning intercepted a US U2 spy plane at over 65,000ft once, which the Americans found a bit disconcerting by all accounts. They are known to have topped out at over 85,000ft a few times.
@@robw7676 The F53 was apparently capable of Mach 3 and it is said that the only reason it's top speed was never found was that they would run out of fuel first. They were the "export version"
I always loved the Lightning, a very unique and successful design that combined Western and Russian design philosophies of aircraft design. Extremely swept wing that is in essence a delta and its a twin engine to boot! It and the CF-104 Starfighter were the fastest climbing aircraft of their time, fast and maneuverable as anything of their time. Didn't have long legs but then the fuel guzzling engines of their time meant almost nothing did. USA fixed this by perfecting air to air refueling.
@@sichere It might have intercepted an SR71 when it was coming in to land…As for Concorde, one could…it could reach 1500mph. They were hand built, some were better than others…
@@toucheturtle3840 The BAC F53 Lightning was a different kettle of fish with 2 RR Avon 302R's producing over 40,000 lb of thrust enabling it to intercept aircraft such as Concorde and the SR71 but it did not have the "legs" to outrun either. No one knows the top speed of the Lightning as it would keep accelerating until the fuel ran out and they could get to 80,000 ft..
@@sichere The highest reported altitude of a Lightning was 88,000 feet flying out of Saudi Arabia . Lightnings could reach Mach 2 in level flight. Like I said some were better than others. Each engine would produce around 16,000 lbs of thrust. Take into account the weight of the aircraft ( around 17 tons), you’ll find the answer.
The RAF pilots ragged them - One "bent" his pulling over 13.5 G coming out of a fast dive through clouds and one was seen exiting the clouds over an airfield tail first, only to light the AB's and head back the way he came but not before lifting some of the concrete hardstanding at the end of the runway !

so do i
a truly beautiful all British iconic aircraft love the sound of those 2 avons at full pelt
Superb, many thanks for the memory of an absolutely sodden experience. The God's cried for the Lightning that day... Thanks once again JetNoise.
thankyou @ jetniseforever for uploading this beautiful rare footage
Fantastic just as I remember
I was there that day ! It was a fantastic event, even if it was slightly damp...

The days when the UK actually had an airforce.
True, with aircraft.
A Typhoon could knock four Lightnings out of the sky from 20 miles away. Think about it.
@@timhancock6626 They could do it from120 miles.
@@timhancock6626 20 miles? a lot further than that
@@timhancock6626 These were a stepping stone towards typhoon
I remember those days as if it was yesterday in my youth serving in the RAF......
Had the pleasure of flying with Wg Cdr Jake Jarron in the lightnighting. Loved Binbrook and the lightning
is Jake Jarron pr Jon fynes still in the aviation circle

Seen one as a kid- awesome
The best ever aircraft 👍❤❤❤
My last base before retiring. Nice to see a Lightning again. Damned shame that there are none flying in the UK any more. Bucc too.
pilot or ground crew?
Fantastic footage of this iconic fighter jet! Thumbs up! :-)
Enjoyed that, thanks.
Liked the dirty configuration high-g turn, that showed some real power.
Amazing rr avons, great climb rate
I was there! 74 Sqn rep
The most powerful aircraft of its day
Gorgeous ❤️❤️❤️
Magic a great Interceptor. spent many years working with them on AIr Defence Radars.
Gone through the clouds
Fantastic low pass towards end of display, water vapour compression on wings, happy days

Was at this show!
Phat Fast and Unique 😎

The days of big jet fighters
Would love to have seen this pitted against the Tornado and Typhoon!
Go girl go
Awesome
i have all the full technical APs for all variants of the lightning

very true
thankyou for uploading this amazing video
Analog technology flown by real pilots.
Moisture compression on wing, brilliant
Put F15 And lightning side by side qra take off, lightning wins
Sqn Ldr Jon Fynes?
I was there too with my wife to be....soaked to hell....but worth it...
Lightning interseped concord and sr71 and out took them
One Lightning could outrun Concorde, which is why they used it. A Lightning intercepted a U-2 not an SR-71. The SR-71 could reach Mach 3.6.

Wheels down, quite noisy for pilot
Sadly mist a real fighter
Surprised it didn’t crash 20/25% did.
