My dear Dad was in the RAF in WWII and arranged for my two young sons and myself to visit Binbrook in 1986..along with him of course! It was an experience I'll never forget. We still have a picture signed by all those(very!)young pilots and a great poster of a Lightning in a vertical climb-at the time I believe it held the record for the fastest climb of ANY jet.We were thrilled to see the location in Memphis Belle. The connection there was my American father-in-law taught the guys to fly B-17s i

I was at Binbrook with ATC summer camp in the sixties, then if l remember it was a V- Bomber Station, there wasn't any lightnings. But one thing l can say, three of us in walked down to the Marquis of Granby pub and got passed, on return to base, we were shouted at by the duty no and locked up all night in the guard room.

I lived on the base for 2 years with my parents in Cambridge Cres in the mid 70s. My dad flew them. I was 15 at the time. Got posted there from Bracknell staff college around 75'.

Thanks for posting. I visited Binbrook a couple of time in the early 70s as a spotty yoof. Ah, the Lightning - what the word sillhouette was invented for.

,I was on LTF 83 till it closed in 87. Was a good place although didn't seem at times. Sad to see it's current state but unfortunately that's the way most closed bases end up

Hi Kristian, just come across your video of Lightnings at Binbrook. Great stuff! Took me back to the many happy hours I spent at the crash gates watching the the Lightnings and other frequent visitors in the 1970/80s. Regards Peter

Ahhh... memories. I remember at an A.T.C. summer camp in about 73
at a day outing to U.S.A.F. lakenheath an American pilot showing us
over an F.4 telling us they just couldn`t cope with the Lighting in
exersises. Still sticks in my memory that Lighting take-off.

@farmerkristian Was stationed at Conigsby in the 70's (Phantoms) and every year a bunch of us would travel to Binbrook AIr Show/Open Day just to see the Lightnings.
Went looking for Binbrook on Google maps a while ago, as you say everything gone. I guess they had to make something of it being redundant now but I was still saddened.

I was born in 1980 and sadly cant really remember the Lightnings (I can remember the good old F4 and the Buccaneer though).
My Dad is a truck driver and he said he was parked in a layby somewhere (many moons ago) having lunch when 2 Lightnings came over at low level, suddenly went vertical with the re-heat on and dissappeared into the clouds making more noise than you would think possible!.
Its tragic that we dont have any of these beauties left flying at airshows

It's "stomping" ground. You stomp on the ground, not stamp it. But a classic vid. The run-up's and fast taxis just aren't the same. Great jets.

When we visted my grandad in Grimsby (were from Southport), my dad would always make the trip to Binbrook to watch these (he was in the RAF in the 50s/60s). I remember that it was a bit of a drive to get there from Grimsby but it was worth it to watch them. I was 10 in 87, and remember sitting on the roof of our C reg Vauxhall Senator at the time to get a better view. Thanks for the video. Whats the airfield like now?

have a look for other video's of Raf Binbrook in its present state on youtube also,it will give you an idea of its current condition, its now a run down sad excuse for a industrial estate and most of the runways have been dug up.
