Attack on Titans first episode was in retrospect groundbreaking, as no first anime episode ever had so many powerfully shocking and tragic moments happen so soon and all at once no less.
I can respect that, but the series always felt a little overrated to me - not bad, just overrated.

@@lightsprite6128 Maybe, but ever since I managed to sit through the first anime I ever watched in its entirety (broadcast, mind you), Gundam 00, most political anime just don't cut it. In many ways, AoT just feels like another variant of a zombie apocalypse - though you can blame my brother for going through a long zombie phase for that. At this point, I'm like Angry Joe, in that I don't want to see anything that even looks remotely like a zombie story.
And I'm not apologizing for calling it a zombie story. Just look at it: a bunch of inhuman creatures, many of which spawn from humans and are created by humans that mostly mindlessly go around eating humans while all of the political tension that was hidden whenever their not in the immediate vicinity gets brought out. It's a zombie story, just with multi-story zombies this time.
I acknowledge that such can be good, and I have said that it is not bad, but nothing from it felt like a real surprise to me. I was able to predict just about everything in it - and I never read the manga. The first episode just feels overrated, though I will grant that it is only just so.
Go ahead and like it. Nothing says you can't. I just don't, that's all.

@@heatherduncan5101 Though I need to go back and finish watching the series, without a doubt AoT is a GOAT. It hooked from the very first episode, and for me for a series to do that usually takes about a couple. The second would be the recent iteration of Fruits Basket (which would be my first exposure to the series, leaving out the OG animated show which from most people I chatted with, wasn't very good and wasn't even finished) With AoT you certainly knew what you were going to expect: a no-holds barred, edge-of-your-seat, joy-ride (umm....maybe not, 'joy'...but definitely a ride) of your ever-anime-loving life. If someone asks me what show should they start with if they're new to anime in general, I tell them about AoT and to start there, they can thank me later. You really can't go wrong with AoT. Already, with the show in its final season, it's established itself as an unmitigated classic hands-down

Every time I see “Monster”, I can’t help but sympathize with Dr. Tenma’s decision to save Johan’s life. If anyone was in his position, would you save a child who still had their whole life ahead of them, or an adult who has lived most of their life already?
But the other person was an important political figure who can possibly save more children

Not to mention saving a political figure's life could lead to connections that may help Tenma in any future endeavors.
Having a guy who knows a guy who knows another guy who knows yet another guy is always helpful.
You both make really good points, but if I was a doctor I wouldn't be worried about making connections. I would be concerned with saving the patients life and worry about the other things later

Well, if you operated on the political figure, you could both save his life AND potentially make connections.
Plus, there are a handful of doctors who are in it just for the money and the title "Dr." They would take the higher-profile individual if it means a better-paying position.
It became an interesting moral dilemma for the MC. I haven't read the manga or watched the series and I really need to but I haven't been able to find a streaming service that has it.
Twist the opening situation another way: what if the MC had to make the choice between saving a child and saving a criminal witness that if he died the case he was involved with would go down the toilet? Sounds like he's screwed either way but being a doctor doesn't remove him from his responsibility to whatever patients come his way. I really wished I watched Monster because it sounds like a fascinating series and one that's right up my alley :)
The first episode of AOT gave me stressful nightmares and I’ve been a fan since.

Hmm i would add Steins Gate first episode .While i do agree that to truly see how great that first ep was you need to see the finale but even without that it was so well directed and it really gave a....ummm.....a strange feeling you can say, that gives you an impression that this is gonna be an amazing series. Well i agree that steinsgate is a masterpiece, but not from episode one... At least to me... I actually dropped it after the first episode the first time i watched it because the main character was pretty annoying. Turns out that i gave it a second chance and ended up really liking the mad scientist haha! Kristina!

@@Harsh1650 yeah, no. Re:zero is definitely mainstream as far as anime is concerned. It’s the 20th most popular in MAL and very high rated which should speak for itself. Demon slayer is just in its own tier along with series like attack on titan and evangelion.

I still remember watching AOT for the first time. I literally had no idea what it was all about since I never watched the trailer and just found it in my brother's hard drive. I was just amazed by the first episode and just binged the entire first season in one day.
I am going to drop a mention for Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. That first episode is a love letter to the craft of making Anime and the series itself is an amazing and thought provoking look into the effort, skill, and talent that all has to come together to create Anime.

Johan is the best antagonist of all time and also my favourite character in Monster.. I loved everything about the show and I think everyone should watch it... No doubt it's an masterpiece..

It took me twelve episodes to get into Monster but I liked it a lot
I know right, it is the most near flawless anime i have ever watched and Johan was just out of this world, he dethroned Griffith for my fav anime villain of all time.Cant believe some people dont like it or even stay away from watching it just cause it has a slow pacing, which in my opinion was paced perfectly, i was hooked by the very first ep and by the 4th ep with adult Johan's reveal (if i remember correctly lol) i already declared it a Masterpiece.

Episode 1 is really what I like about anime or any story medium. You know that the story have proper structure of the story even if it's unpredictable if it manage to build its world on a natural way and introduce some snippets of the conflict lurking.
Attack on Titan introduces Eren's desire and philosophy of freedom.
Vinland Saga build the usual violent Viking world but shows us how war and violence corrupted the mind of people and think that it is normal.
To Your Eternity shows the nature of life.

I would like to add "Mononoke" a horror themed anime about an unnamed Exorcist dealing with supernatural entities called Mononokes with an unique art style and music, the show has a very simple narrative, there aren't many arcs or episodes that connect with each other aside from the fact that most of the episodes are divided in 2 or 3 parts, so they are basically their own movie in each case, but the cases and the way that our hero investigate them is what really sells the anime.
I went into the comment section to check if anyone mentioned Mononoke. The best anime I've ever seen.

Aot is a solid one. I still don’t know about how I feel about the ending. Unfortunately, I feel like a lot of the options I want to see had the manga do better than the anime. An example would be Tokyo Ghoul.

Aot ep 1 is like the best opening episode in the history of shows, not only because of the shock, heartbreak and cliffhanger but how it lays the foundation for the best plot twist in the history of plot twists
Made in Abyss is a great series. Sure, the first few chapters and their...questionable content can easily filter those with a weak stomach, but then it gets absolutely CRAZY from there. Second anime season has been confirmed too; all I can say is prepare for Namek with cute kids.

I honestly fell in love with Black Clover in the first episode. Sure, Asta's yelling was annoying, but just that first episode shows awesome magic, Asta's determination, and Yuno's respect for him as a brother and rival.

Personally, I don't like Attack on Titan (it just never appealed to me), but I can't honestly say the pilot episode was anything less than amazing.
I hate how criminally underated made in abyss and violet evergarden are. They are gorgeous and a must watch. I watched both of them consecutively in 2 days. Beautiful and stunning
The first episode of Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works is what got me into anime altogether, and I still consider it to be a masterpiece. I had watched Evangelion when I was in my late teens, and watched some anime growing up here and there. But that first double-length episode of (what I consider to be anyway) one of ufotable's greatest works sunk it's claws into me and never let go.

@@deavin4293 TRUE. It relied on shock value and nothing else to grab kids attention. The story throughout is pretty weak and the characters (mostly) are a bit boring. Not a bad show but not as good as people claim it to be.

I would argue Seven Deadly Sins, but only the first episode. The rest of that first season was pretty great, things kinda fell off in season 2, and season 3 was a shitshow. But that first episode was incredible.

It was the second episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion that made me a life long anime fan. I only saw a few minutes of it in passing but it was when Shinji was lying in bed then cut to the flash back of his battle with Sachiel.
Attack on Titan definitely deserves the top spot.
Personally, I would add One Punch Man and Dorohedoro. Also, the beginning of Fullmetal Alchemist (not Brotherhood) really hooked me into the story.
