Yes you should collect local native plants and add them to the tank. It would be really cool to see how you do it and provide an opportunity for people (me) to know how to get fish and plants cheaper/for free. Cool video, thank you.
Did you collect them yourself or order them commercially? And live native plants would only help the ecosystem you are creating. Not to mention boost educational opportunities from the tank.
I just got farm-raised juvenile rainbow darters (about 2" long). My research says to feed them freeze-dried bloodworms, but I'm not convinced that is the best choice. Any suggestions you can give would be great! Thank you!
Dear Jake: I didn’t realize that such a colorful, interesting, small fish as the rainbow darter (Etheostoma caeruleum) was native to North America. Yours look to be enjoying this tank. Some suggestions for plants native (or at least invasive) to North America, which you might consider adding to this tank include: Eurasian water-milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) water lettuce (Pistia) waterthyme (Hydrilla verticillata) redhead grass (Potamogeton perfoliatus) Thank you for a very enjoyable look at your, terrific set-up. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar
I really didn't realize natives we so colorful either. Once I started researching these little guys more and more, the more I fell in love with them. Great plant suggestions!! I originally wasn't going to keep live plants in this tank, but it's looking more likely that I will!
No, not at all necessary. I had that heater in there before I really knew I was going to keep in it, just haven't removed it. You can't turn it off, but it's on it's lowest setting (68)
I have a question and need help. I will travel to Florida next week and I just bought a auto feeder for my fish. I got 2 darters and I really like them. I usually give them bloodworm and they don’t eat the other dry food that I give my other fish. Can u pls Tell me a dry food that the darters would eat? Thank you
Hey, I've had darters for about a year now! My male darter follows me across the tank when he's hungry even though he's wild caught. The other 3 tend to hide a lot more. I have a few shiners in the tank too. So far they only take frozen foods, like shrimp. But I just tried today to get them to eat Bug Bites and some of them actually did!
Wow. Love this. And this idea. Looks like they are native to north Alabama where I live. Where did you find these guys? I may have to do something like this. New sub.
Thank you! 😁 I got them online at jonasaquarium.com. my original plan was to collect them myself, but the summer flew by! Next thing you know we are in October.
Thinking about adding North American Native plants! Let me know what you think!
Hornwort is a solid one to add!
Hornwort, American Val, Ludwigia Repens, Bacopa, water Hyacinth
Yes
I put my darters in a tropical community aquarium and they seem ok and fine
Colorful little guys. Good choice.
I'm having a lot of fun with these little fish so far! Thank you for stopping by!
Great new tank and fish sir I like cheers
Thank you, sir!!

Thank you man! I appreciate you stopping by!
Nice bro I like those fish
Thank you! They are a lot of fun to watch!

Exactly what I was thinking!! I bought them commercially.
Hello! Cool tank bro!
How many degrees Rainbow darter needs? What is their range?
Do they can reach 23/25°C without problem?
Thanks!
Save the green sided darter fish

Can't wait to see what else you add to the tank, and I love the idea of adding native plants! 😀
I'm starting to think I'll probably go in the direction of live native plants!
Nice 👍🏻 love the background and scape of the tank!
I'd recommend, southern, northern, or mountain (whatever's in your area) red belly dace for your mid water fish

I see that you have a heater in this tank. Is it necessary? Wouldn't these fish prefer water at room temperature?
Please advise.

Would endlers and Cory’s be okay tank mates for rainbow darters?
One thing to keep in mind is that darters prefer cold water. White cloud minnows or rainbow shiners would be great tank mates

What state are you from? I’m starting a 55 gallon tank myself

That's awesome!! That's where I would like to get, eventually!
How big do they get?
About 3 inches

Very nice native tank! I love it. New sub here. :)
Thank you, sir!
Would white clouds work with those fish?
Hmm.. I don't know for sure. I think they would be ok. Let me know if you try them together!
