I used to use folders for subjects when I was in secondary school and I found a 'colour coding' system helped me as an autistic person. I had ones that were zippy folders and had a mesh built into the PVC to reinforce it, and I had both "A4" and a larger "B4" Size since I found that some subjects (looking at you Maths, History and Geography) didn't actually fit in the "A4" Size. I then used for the subjects that required Ringbinders (HE and Science) the popper type folders and punched holes in them for storing my science textbook so it didn't accidently get left behind. I used the same ringbinder+ popper folder system for GCSEs and A Levels as it stopped notebooks (I often kept little A6 'KEY TERMS' notebooks for each subject so I wasn't constantly going 'what does that mean' whilst revising, also came in handy when my English teacher used words that I didn't know the meaning of when dictating notes as I could make note of the definitions) English novels and textbooks going AWOL. Regarding the 'colour coding'. I used to back my books with wrapping paper and then use colourful paper tape (the sort you got in your latest B&M hail) to colour code the books and folders so I knew what folder was which subject. When your teachers give you completely identical books most of the time it made things harder to mix up, and considering every 'de merit' caused me a meltdown, reduced the 'oops, I brought my history book instead of my maths notebook' moments.
Would you be interested in making an 'essential skills before starting school' video maybe next year, where you could include things like zipping coats and tying shoes for primary school kids and how to tie a tie and how to wash dishes by hand for secondary kids. All the secondary schools where I live (might apply to the whole of Northern Ireland in fact) require all students to wear ties at all times (unless there's a 'summer blouse' option for the girls) from first year up to upper sixth as our sixth formers wear uniforms that are slightly different to their school's main uniform, and since most primary schools don't require ties it can be a bit of a challenge to learn so if it turns out your child's secondary will require a tie it seems like a good idea to start practicing early. Washing dishes might seem weird but when I went into Secondary school ten years ago I was the only one in my entire HE class who knew how to wash dishes without a dishwasher as everyone else had a dishwasher at home and I didn't. As you can imagine, the first HE Practical didn't go well. And then there's the cleaning up after art lessons or a science experiment as well so its something to probably ensure a child knows if in your home dishes are predominantly washed via dishwasher. My mum works in domiciliary care and has recently worked with some new colleagues who've just finished school, most of her clients don't have dishwashers and even if they do, her company doesn't allow careworkers to use them. A friend of her's was on a 'double' run the other week with an 18yr old on her first shift and phoned my mum after she'd finished, apparently the 18yr old didn't know how to wash up the client's dishes and my mum's friend had to show her. There's actually been a lot of 'send to all' texts from her bosses lately about dishes not being washed so they're thinking that maybe its due to the new 18yr olds not knowing how to wash dishes as they've grown up with dishwashers- considering not all uni accommodation will have dishwashers that doesn't bode well for the students starting uni in September so probably a good thing to check with the uni goers as well.

I looked it up because I was curious. The foot measuring tool is called "the Brannock Device", named after its inventor, Charles Brannock. Google says almost no one knows this name anymore.

My 7th grade daughter needed a bigger back pack this year since she wants to carry it around school instead of going to her locker between all her classes. She also needs to bring her school chrome book back and forth. She chose to use the Mickey back pack we got 6 years ago the first time she went to Disney World. One of those once you spend so much you were able to buy the back pack. Saves me money great!! She did need a new lunch box she picked out a mine craft one. She got new gym shoes in April and luckily they still fit and are in good condition!

I always find it odd watching these vids these days as my 2 teens are in a high school with no uniform!! It gets a lot of criticism but honestly it’s so liberating when it comes to back to school shopping!! 😂 xx

Personally love the idea of family name stickers as my children's names would never fit on a name label as we actually have a very long double-barrelled surname 🙈
