    Nirvana Gravel Relay was one hell of a day. What began as a casual non-competitive 110 mile ride, turned in to an absolute suffer fest. It was hot, humid, and hilly but the routes were absolutely stunning.
    Get this one on the calendar, folks!

    not sure if you saw Dylan Johnson's Unbound recap, but he did some very interesting things for "heat management" as he called it. He carried multiple bottles of water, the purpose of which was strictly for dumping on his head. His drinking water was in a large USWE bladder, filled with icewater. He had a crew bringing him fresh bladders.

      Yes, I did actually. At the last sag I did the same exact thing and it helped a lot. His little pack is cool how it sits in the jersey.

    You were experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion. Me teammate and I started with you that morning. We hydrated well the day before the race and carried 2.5 liters of fluid on the first lap and 3.5 liters on our second lap. On the second lap we both ran out of water for a period of time. Stopping and eating the way you described also may have contributed to your heat exhaustion. Heat management and preparation is key when temps are in the triple digits. I'm glad you are okay and was able to finish! Thanks for the video!

      Hell yea! It was good to ride with you for a bit. I appreciate that feedback. This was definitely a good learning experience for me.

      @@TysRides I noticed that on the second lap that you and Lefty didn't have your hydration vest (at least in some of the shots)..I immediately thought that wasn't going to be good..

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides  3 месяца назад

      @ericrubin5542 yep. That was my mistake. There were so many of those little sag stops set up with coolers that I thought I would be good. Felt pretty good after the first 55, so I just left the pack. Another lesson learned. When in doubt, wear the pack.

    Agree with other comments. I’ve had this happen probably a dozen times over 35 years of cycling. When your core gets to a certain temp, blood flow is restricted to your extremities and you are DONE! It only gets worse from there! It can be dangerous, I’m glad you’re ok!

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides  3 месяца назад

      Thanks. I've delt with leg cramps a number of times as well. Never have I had cramps in my arms and other parts of my body like this. The arm cramps were probably as bad as the leg cramps. And you are right about the core getting warm. It was almost like I could feel how warm my body was and it was very scary. This was another good lesson for me to learn.

    Went out of a 40 mile ride in KC, almost died with the heat! those miles felt worse than the 100 mile unbound!

      That's what I said to Lefty! We did an old 100 mile route the day of Unbound and it was gravy compared to this!

    Honestly great news that they are moving away from a relay into more of a traditional ride. The relay thing seemed fun, but spreading the field out makes for less fellowship.
    I’ll definitely sign up for the 80 next year, those are beautiful Missouri gravel roads. Great area to ride a bike!!

      I agree with that. The relay concept is a cool thing that is unique, but I feel like new format will be better. This dude is passionate about this thing, and I want to see it turn into something big. I think it could. The roads were incredible, and the party they had going at lunch with the DJ was awesome.

    I was just watching this while cleaning in the kitchen, and heard you mention the Amish guys. I think we rode together the day you met them. Would have been 2018 or 2019 at BURP. They were riding inexpensive hardtails wearing long pants and shirts, and crushing it. I think they mentioned that they worked at an egg farm. I had forgotten about that day until now. Hope all is well with you.

      @jmal5390 that's exactly right! I believe it was Melton. He rode a wheelie all the way back to the car. And yes, I have recently been seeing those guys at gravel events, and they are even stronger now! They still run the egg farm. Nice to hear from you!

    Broooo... I've cramped like this before. Just gotta say, you needed pickle juice! The salt, the variety of flavor... it's the biggest thing to keep with you. I always have a little plastic bottle of pickle juice for when I used to ride long distances.

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides  3 месяца назад

      Yea, I've been down this cramping road a few times. Used to get them bad as a football player too. They would make me drink pickle juice on the field. Nothing this extreme though. I've had leg cramps often. This shit was different level. Arms, back...honestly my arms were as bad as my legs, which was weird. My damn toes were cramping lol

    Be careful pushing through cramps and nausea. I pushed through about 20 miles of them at the Hotter Than Hell gravel ride last year and spent the night in the hospital after finishing. I had almost given myself rhabdo, which can be life threatening. Listen to your body! You do not want rhabdo. Met y'all at Ro3, keep up the great content!

    Man. This is how Unbound 100 went for me. I stop being able to keep anything down at mile 90 after getting cooked. Puked at the water oasis and then again at mile 105. But finished. Legit thought I was in a really bad way.

    btw…how did that dog keep cool in the van…?

    • @TysRides
      @TysRides  3 месяца назад

      I meant to address that.
      So that van has two high-powered battery packs that could power pretty much anything you need for about two weeks off grid. There is an AC unit that can be attached inside the van that ran off the batteries while we rode. Lefty also made sure to park in the shade. The van was a cool 70 degrees the whole time while we rode. Now, obviously, those batteries won't run that AC for two weeks straight, but it will run the AC for a full day with no issues.
