A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

Congratulations to Jack - but of course every student's name is called out! We've just had 2 graduations in our family - my husband graduated with a Master's degree from Glasgow University and our daughter graduated from Queen Margaret University In Edinburgh at the beautiful Usher Hall - both times pipers were involved and yes, we clapped for every student.

Ideas: picnics on the lawn, once a year. Murder mystery dinners. Sandwich making contests. Volunteers can brighten the videos, gives a variety of characters to worry about and root for. With Julie, the sky is not even the limit, she will get people there come hell or high water, she is only starting.

So I have a back-of-house question for the American side: why not set up an American supplier/distributor (like cafepress) that would receive the order, create the product on demand and ship it within the US, without the customs forms or the expensive shipping to contend with?

I hate to rub it in but where I live down the south of France, there's a heatwave, temperature at the moment 32°C and it's almost 9 pm. Tomorrow is another scorcher, might get myself off to the beach but in the morning, don't want to be at the beach from midday onwards when the sun's at its highest. There is a down side to this and that's lack of rain and there is a water shortage so we're asked to be careful and not waste water. What do they say about one man's meat is another man's poison. You could do with sunshine and we could do with rain. C'est la vie!! Love your videos.

I recommend for the rewilding walk. A few outhouses along the trail and picnic tables for taking a rest, having a snack and drinks, time to look at trail info on one’s phone. Tables with attached benches made from cut logs. Primitive out houses. One needs to carry out all garbage. Backpacks, boots, rain jackets recommends.
Make your beautiful Orangery into a top Restaurant.
They would need to build a kitchen next to it though. A venue for winter weddings would be better.

You should look up the designer of the Aga, Gustaf Dalen, such an amazing story. It's an iconic design and a staple of country house kitchens for over 100 years.

The landscape project is so inspiring. I am sure it has been challenging to bring farmers together to work on this. I would love to learn what your goals are and indicators of success.
Okay okay okay. I might just be a silly American who is too much in my American mindset, but If I were these two I would think about Sandwich food trucks. You could renovate a central kitchen area at Mapperton in one of those old buildings that needs reno. You then could send your sandwich trucks all around to the other historic houses that don't have food offerings and to events and along the SWCP And the local area. People don't need to come to Mapperton, bring mapperton to them. I know Luke isn't yet the Earl of Sandwich but he will be (hopefully no too soon) and he IS a great face for such a thing. Perhaps the family has not wanted to capitalize on the "Sandwich" thing, but I think the business practically builds itself. Of course a capital investment would be needed. Anyway...Food trucks. If I had a chance to buy a Sandwich from the Earl of Sandwich, even if it was indirectly, that would be a thing I would do. Just a suggestion from who doesn't know much.

It would be interesting, in my mind at least, if some/all of the 53 other farmlands would offer tours and classes on site.
Classes that show and share what they do and how they do it.. would be fascinating to incorporate into the adventures in and around Mapperton, they may also be interested in hosting “farm hand’s” for the week, or other things.
Getting to the cottage and getting work done, why don’t you do it by horse… or utility off road vehicles?? That would make things even more exciting to share..
Obviously prior to the “fancy” road being built other means would have been available to reach the site..
Can’t wait to see what you come up with!!

There are many areas of Northern California that have 'slippage' or melting hills/mud slides when heavy rains come. With the shift in climate, certain areas are hit more than others. There was also a road slippage in the Idaho/Wyoming border area that created a 2+ hour detour until it was fixed. That fix took only a few weeks (if I remember correctly), rather than over a year. Is there a back way entrance to the farm house that can be used in the meantime?
Checked out the Mapperton Shop! No linen tea towel with a silk screened line drawing of either Mapperton House or the restored eagles?! On linen or a cotton/linen blend? I can imagine a set of silk screened tea towels over a period of time, and of course, the 'annual linen tea towel calendar' that every Mapperton follower will NEEEEED for the kitchen! A line drawing and the calendar would be great Christmas gifting items! I will place my order as soon as available!

As someone who lives in a tourist destination, please don’t discount doing something that will attract the locals in the shoulder seasons. We actively avoid doing much locally in peak tourist season, but in the off seasons we will go and do things every weekend when possible, and taking the kids somewhere they can run and play whilst we have a coffee is a popular option.
Even if it’s not the full cafe and instead is a coffee van with limited merchandise and your self guided tours, hot beverages and snacks and your areas around the cafe open - if it’s a pleasant destination that doesn’t cost a lot you will likely find the locals will come out to brave the less ideal weather and let the kids play whilst they have a hot drink and possibly a slice of cake and catch up with friends.
And as you’ve seen markets can be a big draw card, so maybe a few more of those. Basically anything that provides the local community with a low cost outing, which is especially important in times like these.
Big hint. Get Luke some souvenirs.
