I saw the length and did a double take due to the usual length of your readings. Then when you finished I was caught off guard. I was so enthralled I thought it had only been 10-15 minutes at most. Really amazing job. I can let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding:)

I just listened to this again. What a fantastic rendition! This time through I caught the slowed-down PPC sound effect when Doc's focus zeroes in on a moment and time seems to slow down. What an awesome little touch!!

People under-estimate battletech! It’s probably the best tabletop game lore… probably the deepest lore of any genre, it grows canonically as we speak, as well as fan fic coming out daily! Greatest game no one has heard of 😢

it got a huge boost in popularity when GW did some silliness with 40k a few years ago, that's when i found out about it. To this day, it's a favorite way for my friends and i to spend a night with dice and drinks, so you aren't so alone in this inner sphere anymore. Although, I do love a good batchall.
The lore is the best though. it's awesome how it's just a few CENTURIES of well-documented and realistic politics, which is infinitely cooler than "some demons showed up and now this guy is evil and WAR has to happen"
Battletech rules. 40k is fun but a good lance could stomp anything they have.

Wow. Incredible job! “Live to die...”. Whoa man, I had forgotten how hard that line hits, especially by the end of the story when it’s no longer just a rallying cry, but it’s a reality for those troopers, holding ground and giving seconds to those in their care. I couldn’t stop thinking about Ukraine and the incredible NATO force buildup, just waiting nearby while regular folks like you and me have their whole world blasted and burned around them. I understand these things are complicated, and I empathize with the people in positions of power who also have their humanity stripped from themselves by making the impossible decisions at the strategic level...
One of the reasons I love Battletech is because it has never lost touch with the human side of the story. Doc Bens is about war, of course, but it can be bout conflict at any scope too. You’re having a conflict with a coworker maybe... do you put in the work against all odds to make things work, or do you just nuke the situation and walk away? Maybe you’re the boss, just like the AFFS fleet commander... do you commit resources without knowing whether things will work out well? Fire them both and move forward without them? I dunno I’m just rambling.
This is one of the best short stories I have ever read, thank you so much for treating it so well. I loved the escalation of the sound effects as the story built up, as the fighting got more and more desperate. That added so much.

Thanks James, it was an honour to read. Glad you enjoyed it.
Yeah BattleTech manages to keep the realistic dirty whilst not making you feel dirty. Nope feel the same, when you think the Feds must control hundred if not thousands of planets, is this one little planet on the edge of their space worth the effort? I guess not in this case. Glass it and move on to more important things.
This one my first Shrapnel read, so really happy for the recommendation, thank you!

@@battletopia :) Hopefully you find lots of fodder in those pages. I didn't realize just how HUGE of a project this particular story would be - wow nearly 50 minutes! - but man what a great one. So happy you produced it :)

Yeah about 24hrs in total after all the re-records (my voice changed a lot through the 2 weeks I tried to record 😅) but worth it in the end! I’ve still about 4 magazines to read and 4 more to buy now

Compelling story, and well read sir. I only regret no listening to it on a Wednesday so that I might have made a war crimes Wednesday joke.

Thanks for doing this! I love this story, I feel like it encapsulates the succession wars so well and the fight is so dynamically written and really demonstrates the chaos and desperation of Mech battles.
I wish the author were more discoverable, I wanted to send him a complimentary note but David Smith is an insanely common name.
