    He was also a very smart player who became like a field general. Even late in his career he was credited with elevating his teammates' play, and helping guys get lined up properly. Contrast Roy Williams' success with Woodson versus the quick decline after Woodson retired. Thanks for this timely video! Woodson was the most consistently important player on the 90s Cowboys defense, the greatest NFL safety of the 90s, and I'm really hoping he makes it into Canton this time. Hopefully he doesn't have to face the criminally long wait Cliff Harris did.

    LC, great video.....again! Woodson is way overdue! His biggest sin was he was a quiet superstar on a team full of noisy superstars. He has always been criminally underrated because of that and you just proved it beyond a doubt. Even on the defensive side of the ball, Haley and Deion always got more attention. I remember when he retired, he was trying to come back from a back injury. Story is Parcells was watching him trying to back pedal but he just sadly put his hand on his shoulder and shook his head. It was sad seeing him go because I believe he was the last cowboy of those 92/93 teams still around, that last link to those great teams. thanks for the great video, I hope he gets in this time.

    All time leading tackler and second most special teams tackles. His ability to cover the slot receivers allowing Kevin Smith to stay In man to man can’t be understated! His career especially during those championship years was a big reason why our defense was #1 overall in total defense a couple times in those early 90’s! I’m lucky to own 2 of his game used jerseys. He should’ve have gone in years ago but hopefully they get it right this year. 🙏

    The thing that I remember about Woodson is that his play never dramatically dropped off. I honestly believe that if it hadn't been for his herniated disc that he was one of those guys that could've played into his later 30s without a precipitous drop in the quality of his play. Also, Roy Williams was never the same player once Woodson retired, which I think is something that is too seldom mentioned when discussing players and their relative greatness. That is, Woodson uplifted the quality of play of his teammates.

I knew when Jimmy left things would start going down hill. I credit that Superbowl in 1995/96 to Jimmy too. Even Aikman says the Cowboys won that Superbowl regardless of Switzer. That being said I’ll take Woodson at SS and Marion at free for about a decade. Marion was an ABSOLUTE STUD for being a seventh rounder. Another Jimmy homerun. We didn’t need to keep Everett or Washington. Marion proved more than capable in 95. Six picks. I think we get him some competition in 95 but that’s it. Gants also gone in 95.

    It almost invalidates the NFL hall of fame when they consistently fail to put someone like D. Woodson in. I think they're penalizing Woody for having a short career, and at the same time they look at him and say we don't care what you accomplished because you didn't play long enough. It's a shame he's not in yet. In my opinion Woody was just as good as B. Dawkins, Reed, Polamalu, and Lynch. Players like the ones I just mentioned maybe don't become who they are without Woody paving the way. I've always felt that the Safety position (free or strong) was undervalued. In the 90's and 2000's the most dominant defenses all had 1 thing in common. A top flight safety running around causing havoc.
    90's Cowboys - Woodson and then R. Williams.
    2000's Bucs - J. Lynch
    2000's Eagles - B. Dawkins
    2000's Steelers - Polamalu
    2000's Ravens - Reed
    2000's Chiefs - E. Berry (before cancer)
    2000's Seahawks - E. Thomas and Kam "Bam Bam" Chancellor
    2000's Broncos - J. Lynch - S. Atwater
    2000's Pats - R. Harrison
    2000's Colts* - Bob Sanders this defense was literally garbage when Sanders was hurt. They were the worst run defense in the NFL without Sanders and in the Superbowl run Sanders came back just before the playoffs and the Colts had the #1 run defense throughout the playoffs.
    2000's Packers - Darren Sharper - Charles Woodson.
    Theres a lot more but I think my point has been made.

Peete scrambled out of the pocket to his right on a key third down. It looked like he was going to easily scramble for the first down, but Woodson came out of nowhere, and rattled Peete. Not only did Peete not get the first down, but Woodson hit him so hard, that Peete left the game with a concussion. Darren could do it all, and he will always be one of my favorite Cowboys players. If you even look at his draft classes you see that from 1990 to when he left, he hit on nearly all of his draft picks. Darren Woodson was one of them. This is what made the rebuild a lot quicker because if you can't get the right players, winning is going to be very hard.

He was drafted as a safety they even gave him #41 when he got there. But they ended up letting Romanowski and Johnson go and moved Woodall to LB full time. Yeah, Woodall was a Woodson clone. A total hit for San Fran in the sixth round in ‘94. They STOLE Tim McDonald from the Cardinals in 1993 and let Tim Harris and Pierce Holt walk.McDonald was another NFC East HOF beast. They acted stunned when Holt didn’t accept their lowball offer in 93 and he went to Atlanta. They had just spent a first round pick on SS Dana Hall in 1992. They had Hanks at FS. And Eric Davis at LCB. Harris and Holt were they key to their switch to the 4-3. I don’t really care if they coveted someone else’s SS they can ride with Hall in 93 and insert Woodall in 1994. My Boys’ll still whoop that ass. It’s amazing how many GREAT, versatile players Dallas had on that D. Woodson plugged so many holes. Especially later on when Dallas started falling apart. I’m still obsessed with my “”ultimate fantasy” NFL. I may have mentioned it a time or 2,476. There are no holes in it and Dallas is still the cream of the crop. The best product on the field for every team. GREATNESS!! Players were building a legacy not just a payday. But I digress….

    • @thelogicalcowboy
      @thelogicalcowboy  6 дней назад +1

      @joshuahendricks7701
      Oh, I completely agree! The Cowboys were the kings of a balanced roster even in such a balanced league. That's the difference between today and the 90s. The league is more talented today because of the evolution of the game but in the 90s the league had what I call "balance talent". Yes, there were superstars but the talent they went up against oftentimes balanced out their abilities. As great of an offensive line Emmitt had he still had to play against legendary defenses in his division from 1990-1995 (Redskins, Giants, Eagles, Arizona).
      I always said that Smith needed to have his offensive line more than Sanders did. Sanders didn't need a dominant line because he played against teams in his division who balanced out his own team's skill set. Yes, he didn't have the better team. But that was fine for Sanders's individual performances. The team's balanced out regardless. In the early 90s teams were able to focus on a particular area of the team and pretty much build on what they wanted. The good GMs however were able to stretch their talent evenly across their teams. So there was still a separation of talent but not that extreme. There weren't really a lot of bad teams. Not like it is today.
      Bad Teams who were in the middle of the league had decent defenses but were not dominant defenses.

Retired 9th in yards and 12th in receptions, was as high as 7th in yards, and was just the 3rd guy in NFL history with 100 catches in a season. It's important to note that when Norton went to the 49ers via free agency, he struggled to make plays in the first 10 games of the 1994 season whereas Jones had a Pro Bowl type season in 1994 and a very good season in 1995.

      Norton was an All-Pro in 1993 and in 1995. Jones never made an Allpro. Norton ran a 4.5. Jones never ran a 4.5. A few months ago LC had a video about Jones that was taken down. He did Jones really good in that video. He highlighted numbers about Jones that i had no idea about. But Norton to me was better ans is one of the most underrated players of those 90s teams.

      Norton took a while to adjust back to outside in SF in 94. He NEVER would have left had Jimmy stayed. Jones would have been switched to the strong side in 95. Jimmy thought he was soft in the middle. I had him competing with Vinson Smith on the strong side in 95. Norton still in the middle in Dallas and Darrin Smith on the weak side. I had San Fran getting their So Cal former Cowboy MLB from the Bay Area in Jack Del Rio for Shante Carver from Minnesota to get Doleman back in camp and be able to keep Zimmerman, Henry Thomas and John Randle. Minnesota just switches Ed McDaniel to MLB in 94 and re signs Jesse Solomon to mentor him in 94. McDaniel made his only PB at MLB. Every team at its best.

      Norton ran a 4.56 at the combine and was absolutely more athletic than Jones. Jones ran a 4.83 but was bigger than Norton. He was the perfect size 6-3 to neutralize the TE at SLB. Jimmy switched him to OLB and he had his best seasons in Miami from 98-200 under Jimmy.

    How the HOF works is incredibly stupid. Woodson has won 3 Super Bowls, he has been passed up by several great players that have either played in, won 1 or never went to the Super Bowl. In my opinion, any eligible player nominated to be inducted into the HOF that has WON a Super Bowl should be an automatic first ballot. I get it, there are so many great players that happened to play for trash teams (Andre Johnson) that deserve the honor, but not over a Super Bowl champ. As much as I dislike the Cowboys, this is a travesty if Woodson isn’t selected because he was the best Safety of his era. He gave every offensive coordinator nightmares, he made his mediocre cornerbacks look competent. Any safety that can make a crummy cornerback look good is an elite player.

    Woodson didn't have the INT numbers, but he was a better player than most of the other All-Pro/ Pro-Bowl safeties of that time like Carnell Lake, LeRoy Butler, Tim McDonald and Blaine Bishop. In my opinion Woodson and Steve Atwater were the best safeties of the 90's and they only had 23 and 24 career int's, respectively.

    I get where Woodson’s coming from in the beginning. It must be frustrating to only hear about the triplets in regard to the glory days. I mean you can be an offensive juggernaut like Peyton and the 2013-2015 broncos, but you will never sustain greatness or win championships without a decent defense. And they play more as a unit and not as superstars usually.

    I watched my once Beloved Dallas Cowboys since I was a young boy in the late 70s, and Clearly, if guys like Leroy Butler and the Denver safety (who was mainly a head hunter, barely covered) got in on an I believe 1st ballot for Butler that's just the Anti-Cowboys bias amongst first of all ex players they used to whomp on, and the Coaches n GM/owners who's faces got shoved in the dirt by the Deservedly Arrogant fan base from the top down, THATS The REAL reason Woody's Not in yet, it's the jealousy n envy, Hell Everytime you hear something out of guys like Sharpe even though they Won 2 and GB got 1 during that stretch it was clearly cause Dallas Was on the decline offensively with injuries, lack of discipline on that side of the ball(on a side note, was telling my girl bout how Jerruh Fuc**Ed up the Randy Moss deal, what a shame, huh, him and Irvin on the field, maybe Irvin doesn't get that devastating injury!??) they jerked Mike around Too, remember cause of the Arrogance, not the drug issues tho they claim that...fuckem... Jones and Martin maybe. Woody was a better player than Johnston work Romo and had more Pro Bowls than either. He had the same number of PBS as NOVACEK and didn’t have more only because he was playing for a loser at the end of his career. Romo was the modern day version of Danny White. He couldn’t win the big one and always threw the costly interception at the last minute. His best year was when Demarco Murray had his. They needed to control the clock. Romo was very good but DEFINITELY not a HOFer in my book. Inflated stats in.a water down era. Jerrah was a FOOL for letting Murray go.

    Please, let’s stop referring to Sanders as the GOAT. The 49ers tried to keep him off Irvin, saying some nonsense like Harper is the one who got big plays. He rarely as a Cowboys lined up against Rice or Moss. They put him on one side, regardless of who the other team’s top receiver was so it was easy to not put the top guy on Sanders side, just to hide the fact that he was declining.

    I despise the Dallas Cowboys and think they are overhyped and overblown each season. I also think the Dallas Cowboys have the dumbest and worst assenine fan base in all of professional sports. That being said. Darren Woodson belongs in the hall of fame. He was safety big as a linebacker and was like a shut down corner covering the slot, which is unheard of. He was better than Troy Poluamu. His football IQ was off the charts. He maybe the best safety I saw play.
