    One other thing to mention about the Hare Trigger ability is that, arguably, the way Reliable Talent is written would allow you to use it for initiative rolls.

      @@stefantyler You are correct. However, Reliable Talent reads as, "whenever you make an ability check that lets you add your proficiency bonus," and not something like 'when you make an ability check that you are proficient in.' It is arguable, but I think it should theoretically work.

    • @SpiderWaffle
      @SpiderWaffle 2 года назад +13

      @@stefantyler Reliable talent doesn't say "that you are proficient with" or of that vein, it says: "Whenever you make an ability check that *lets you add your Proficiency Bonus*"
      and Hare-Trigger says: "You can add your proficiency bonus to your initiative rolls."
      So you are making a check that lets you add your proficiency bonus, verbatim, reliable talent should trigger.
      Jack of all trades words: "you can add half your proficiency bonus"
      that's very dubious, maybe by a generous interpretation. I would think adding "half your proficiency bonus" is not adding "your proficiency bonus"

    Man Harengons would make for excellent War Magic Wizards.
    - Perception proficiency. Wizards can't get this through the class itself, and its a good one to have in general
    - Rabbit Hop means you're a Wizard who can freely get themselves out of trouble without relying on Misty Step. Which means you can disengage/leave a dangerous area and still cast a levelled spell
    - Boost to initiative on top of the War Magic boost to initiative. You can reaaaally make sure you're going to go first for that key debuff or buff.

    I didn’t see anyone else mention barbarian but I think it’s a worthy consideration that blends all of the features of the Harengon together quite well.
    Rabbit hop to reposition to the biggest bad guy and lock them down.
    Intuitive initiative bonuses already built into their class at second level.
    And even lucky footwork gets better as the likelihood that a failed dex save will be within 1d4 is better due to advantage on such saving throws.

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 2 года назад +2

      Rogue Swashbuckler and use the jump to reach far away enemies, flavoring your sneak attack damage as your Dragoon Jump bonus damage. Of course, the major issue there is the lack of finesse polearms, so you'd have to be a sword Dragoon.
      The alternative is to simply Rabbit Hop to get the height to fall on top of the enemy and split the damage via the Tasha variant rule for falling on an occupied space (if your DM is more likely to be on board with that), then attack separately afterwards. In such case, you'd have your base movement remaining to fall back on if you end up prone yourself, while also often getting to take advantage of having knocked it prone with your fall, boosting your weapon attack(s) in that way.
      To make splitting the damage more economical, the general consensus is that Monk's Slow fall reduces the total damage before it's split, but damage resistances like those that say when you "take(s) damage" would only reduce your side of the damage. So, Barbarian Rage and Stoneskin could be some useful options, and subclass features like Clockwork Soul Sorcerer's Bastion of Law or School of Bladesinging Wizard's Song of Defense are things you could work such a build around as well (with some downsides to consider depending on what your idea of a Dragoon entails). Unfortunately, while something like Heavy Armor Master would fit a Dragoon pretty well, it specifies the damage has to be from weapons.

    My DM has a plunging attack rule; if you are falling and you make a melee weapon attack against an enemy on your way down, and it hits, you add the fall damage you would take at that point in your fall to the damage roll. Additionally, if the hit lands, you can make an Acrobatics check (DC is 10 + 1/10 of the fall height), and on a success, the height of your fall is reset as if you had fallen from the same elevation as the enemy you just hit.
    e.g Say you fell from 100 feet. On your way down, you pass by a flying enemy that is hovering 30 feet from ground level. You hit it successfully, and deal an additional 7d6 damage to it, and because you also passed the check, you only are considered to have fallen 30 feet, taking only 3d6 fall damage.
    Can't wait for my DM to remove this rule once I come back with a Harrengon.

    But with the jump spell... you end up with up to 90 feet jump, do it straight up with a grappled enemy and the enemy is pretty much splattered.

I know samurai isn’t the most optimized subclass in the world, but the harengon’s racial abilities compliment it pretty well. With the slasher feat and martial adept to give some extra damage and a battle master maneuver, there’s some good damage consistency and strategy and the rabbit jump helps keep you from getting stuck in a flanked position. The class can benefit from hop regardless if built for melee or ranged and even if you're spamming bonus action for pet activations that doesn't discredit hop outside of combat or in situations where you NEED to move. The class can mostly get away with a +2 dex mod and with the initiative bump you get a +5 at 5th level, and since you are a utility caster going first means a lot as you can drop CC spells that proc on the start of a creatures first turn in a round. Perception and a d4 to dex saves don't even need explaining.

    There are a couple ways to make the Rabbit Hop broken:
    Boots of Striding and Springing gives a triple to your base jump
    A monk's Step of the Wind then allows you to exchange one Ki to double that distance
    Then the Jump spell would allow you to triple that

If the answer is yes, is the distance halved as per dragging rules? Would be sweet to get really high jumps going and dropping grappled foes along the way so they take fall damage. But maybe the rules don't support that. (I will pose the idea to my GM, but don't want all the burden on figuring this out on them). Great video as always and I would appreciate any insight

    This race seems like perfect choice for GWM Gloom Stalker. Your INI will be DEX+WIS+PB, your movement in the first turn will be 40+5xPB (if you jump), which makes sure you will reach your targets in the most important turn. You can be medium size, so you can take GWM feat. Ranger gives access to Jump spell and it also gives you Darkvision 60 ft.
    Synergies there are insane!

    I made a Harengon ranger named Clint Harington. It was an out of the abyss campaign so his family immigrated to the underdark and became outlaws. So it's a big bunny gang that mug people and other stuff. So Clint is actually a decent human being and leaves his family and becomes a bounty hunter and tries to fix his family's wrongs. He was also a cowboy with a boomerang and he was such a fun character to play. Then he failed a con save and turned into a zombie, 3 sessions after I introduced him😥. But I can confirm that the race is a ton of fun to play

    Is just me or I find it weird that the Harengon isn't considered as a fey? And other question, does it stack with Jack Of Trades as it is not said that you are profficient on initiative rolls, but that a bonus equal to your profficiency bonus is added instead?

    I'm planning on running a Harengon Arcane Trickster for a level 15 one shot. Give it the Alert feat for an additional +5 initiative, and the lowest initiative it'll have with 20 DEX(+5 modifier) is 25 thanks to Reliable Talent, as it'll have proficiency in initiative rolls. Combined with Jump and Rabbit Hop, he can just grab something up to large, jump in the air, cast Feather Fall on itself and troll the battlefield dealing 7d6 fall damage to Large or smaller creatures one at a time.

    The first two classes I first thought of was Eldritch Knight and Chronorgist. Eldritch Knight with disengage options could come in real handy with using thinks like booming blade. Chronorgist intiative will exceed almost every other class using Alacrity, +Dex, +Int, +prof, and if wanted you can grab Alert. For an average of +18 initiative or +13 without alert at level 5

    The harengon seems like it makes a great caster. like goblin that bonus action mobility is huge.
    I like the idea of leaping 90 feat into danger but, as you said a pre cast of jump doesn't seem likely.
    It's kind of funny, if you have the jump spell you can jump 90 feet with the harengon. If you have boots if striding and springing you can't jump any better at all.

    A grappling focused build equipped with a ring of jumping. Being able to cast Jump at will, you just make it a twitch response where they always have it up.
    Enter combat, and they grapple a creature, jump and then throw the creature to the ground.
    Rune knight for eventual huge size to get full movement on medium creatures or Beast barbarian to add athletics (str) roll to jump distance.
    At L17, a Beast barbarian Harengon could jump 1d20+107 ft into the air (90 from rabbit hop & jump and 17 from expertise in athletics and maxed strength).
    Not optimized for damage, but rather flavorful.

    Do you think the added maneuverability of Rabbit Hop is enough to outpace the centaur grappler from your grapple death squad video? With the wording on Hare-trigger being 'you can," could you decide whether or not to increase your initiative after seeing the initiative order? Having a potential to choose the order you act in also seems quite good in the grapple death squad.

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  2 года назад +2

      I actually address that in the grapple death squad video. By the way I was interpreting grapple, you need to use your movement to drag a grappled creature, and rabbit hop doesn't use your movement.

    Man, I will never understand how you think. Guidance, costing a cantrip selection and concentration for +1d4 to an ability check, is one of the best cantrips in the game; but lucky footwork, effectively an extra saving-throw proficiency or expertise through the first two tiers of play, is "okay, [not] that great"? It's absolutely boggling.

      Makes sense to me

    • @jonc.6046
      @jonc.6046 2 года назад

      @@Karrde13 Lucky footwork sometimes being a better use of a reaction than shield, absorb elements, or an opportunity attack is hardly an argument that it is bad. It's another tool in the toolbox.
      As I already pointed out, guidance requires a cantrip pick and concentration, and you can add to that an action. For all that, it will still play a significantly smaller roll in keeping a character alive and functioning than lucky footwork.

Artificer is also good in at higher leves , getting boots of striding and springing at 10th level to multiply jump lenght by 3, multiclass with graviturgy and you can eventually get 540 feet jumps.
