Un cas réel d’ensevelissement vécu par un garçon de 11 ans cet hiver, sur le domaine du Tour à Chamonix.
Attention au faux sentiment de sécurité à proximité des pistes !
SEULES les PISTES BALISÉES et OUVERTES sont SECURISEES. Même à proximité, je suis en dehors de la piste donc en hors-piste : risque avalanche mais pas que… neige béton verglacée, rocher affleurant, falaise, trou… non signalés ! Pas de balises pour se repérer, ni forcement de témoins pour alerter…
Fox a eu beaucoup de chance. Le DVA, la pelle, la sonde ne sont pas des anti-avalanche. L’issue aurait pu être tout autre.
Pour sortir des pistes, il ne suffit pas de savoir skier ! Il faut être conscient de ce qui peut vous arriver pour être en mesure de l’éviter.

This is a real example of an 11-year old boy being buried in the Le Tour ski area of Chamonix.
Beware of a false sense of security when skiing close to the piste!
ONLY OPEN AND MARKED PISTES are SECURED. Even skiing close to the piste, is not on-piste therefore you are off-piste. Skiing off-piste carries many risks including avalanches, icy or hard snow, rocky outcrops, cliffs and holes… none of which are signposted! There are no signs to find your bearings, and no one to alert the ski-patrol.
Fox was very lucky. Transceiver, probe and shovel are essential but do not prevent an avalanche.
To ski off-piste, you need to know more than just how to ski! You must be aware of the dangers, that way you know how to avoid them.

Ça fait froid dans le dos. Heureusement qu'ils avaient l'équipement...
Putain oui et dire que avant on partaient avec des potes en hors piste sans aucun équipement ni même un émetteur en cas d'avalanche. C'est quand on regarde ce genre de vidéo qu'on se rend compte que si ça avait été nous on serait mort

i am from Chamonix where this was filmed, you wouldn't believe how many people ski off piste, every year it s the same story, the worst part is people getting smashed in bars and restaurants on top of the mountain and then get wrecked off piste...

Quand on connait pas la montagne sur laquelle on ski, on reste sur la piste. C'est d'autant plus valable avec un petit de 11 ans.

So glad he was saved. We also lost a close friend of our sons in Serre Chevalier who was just doing "one more" walking up the hill under a lift in full view, after his friends and brother went home. That was what caused the plaque to release. Yet Hors piste just the same. No Arva, made it hard for the pisteurs to find him. Tragic.

There needs to be a comment here about the choice of line by the father.
Specifically the huge risk of skiing in the bottom of a gulley like that -before the question of river holes is even treated!
Message:
- Strongest skier go first in new terrain.
- Never ski in the bottom of steep gulleys or above terrain traps in fresh snow.
- Always assume there will be death-trap holes in riverbeds.
These are points that could save lives.
Basically, the message that “All off-piste is off-piste and potentially dangerous” is good but it will never stop people going off -just go to any resort on a powder day and watch how blindly people take risks -people how haven’t spent 200 euros on a transceiver. They will ALWAYS do it. But it would help them to recognise terrain traps, for example.
Why would the strongest skier go first? Shouldn't that person go last so he/she can help the others infront?
Pro09video Because they are less likely to choose a dangerous route. When was the last time you skied with a guide or instructor who exclusively skied at the back?? Second strongest goes at the back.
Pro09video A couple extra points you raise here:
If the children are too small to pick themselves up in that kind of snow then they shouldn’t be there at all.
At the very least they should have a second adult skiing behind them.
So, yes, this father took a stupid risk amd nearly killed his kids -not because all off piste is dangerous but because he needed at minimum another adult and some better line choice.

I took an Avalanche Course 2 weeks ago and they taught us exactly this! I was trained by GuideSource in the exact same la Tour area. I took a 'course' once before where we spent most of the day skiing and I ddn't learn much, so I need to understand snowpack and the psycholocigal factors causing most deaths. My trainer from GS was the most highly educated avalanche professional I have ever met. If you EVER go off piste, you must take an avalanche course.
Thank god this kid was found - 30 minutes under the snow and statistically he should have died. In my course we learned 12 minutes is a cutoff, after which only 30% of victims are found alive (we had to find victims in 4 minutes!). You die not from suffocation as the ski patroller said, but from cardon dioxide poisoning. What a lucky family. S
The ski patroller said "Asphyxia" not suffocation, the translation is not accurate. Lucky family :/
lesson: DON’T TAKE KIDS OFF PISTE WITHOUT ADDITIONAL ADULTS.
One in front making smart line choices. One at the back picking up the pieces.
THAT is the mistake here.
Just one thing to respect: stop doing off piste with a KID!!
Lucoum Nice idea but people will always go off piste. They will always take their children off piste also ..No matter what the conditions and consequences..

Lucoum Sure, but there are varying degrees of risk on and off the piste. It is not as simple as a full boycott of one or the other. I know of plenty of examples of kids getting hit by others on the piste, or breaking bones in the park...
what a stupid comment. Are you saying avalanches don't happen to adults? The real lesson is - Never ride off piste alone.
As a British skier, I'll say what the pisteur probably felt unable to say in this video and what the French commenters have been remarkably diplomatic in not saying.
To my fellow British skiers: don't behave like bellends in the mountains. Learn the FIS Code of Conduct and get properly educated about the dangers of off-piste skiing. Never be afraid to speak up when someone in your group suggests doing something potentially dangerous.
A qualified guide may prevent your death or injury without you even realising it. Pay for their lunch and drinks. Tip them. Treat them with the respect they deserve.
Kudos to the father and La Chamoniarde for trying to educate others about the dangers.

Moi je me suis pris un arbre en hors piste. Ça fait mal mais en soit c'est moins dangereux, surtout qu'il y avait pleins de pierres au sol.

D'accord il avait l'équipement, mais aussi beaucoup de chance, normalement quand on ski en hors-piste c'est toujours en groupe en gardant chacun des membres à vu d'oeil, en ayant regarder si la neige était favorable et en ayant regarder le hors-piste avant pour voir les crevasses etc... faites gaffe svp. Vraiment cette situation est toute conne(skier a 30m des pistes) mais aurait pu être dramatique.
Sans équipement,il serait mort...
