    Best looking spacesuits ever

    • @Duhya
      @Duhya 6 лет назад +58

      Agreed they look like robots or sci-fi suits.
      Only caveat is it's a flight suit, for use in the vehicle during ascent and reentry. They won't be leaving the capsule with it, and definately won't be walking on any planet but earth with it.
      So it's not a spacesuit the same way as Apollos surface suits were, or massive bulky EVA suits are. Looks cool though.

    • @DaFinkingOrk
      @DaFinkingOrk 5 лет назад +20

      There have been some great-looking designs and early prototypes for spacesuits over the years - none developed like the SpaceX one though.
      A spacesuit needs to provide pressure to the person inside, that's the primary function (EVA suits also need temperature regulation and radiation protection etc, and both IVA and EVA need an oxygen supply of course). But there's another way to provide this pressure... It's always been done by pumping air into the suit, and I'm pretty sure SpaceX's one still uses that principle (just looks much much cooler doing so). That makes movement laborious and restricted. And it also makes the wearer's body shape less humanlike and more puffed out.
      Another way of providing that pressure is to have a suit so tight it simply mechanically presses against you with the required force. With advanced materials that are very strong yet somewhat flexible and stretchable, that paradoxically results in more manoeuvrability, as the crushing force you'd expect from such a suit is counteracted by the lack of external air pressure. It'd be just like wearing a tight bodysuit (nowadays and near future) made of fairly tough and thick material. Still superior in manoeuvrability and looks than air-pressurised designs though. And in the intermediate future, materials may allow something with the qualities more like a thick tougher spandex to achieve the desired effect, finally allowing the type of spacesuits seen in a lot of sci fi. An air-pressurised helmet like the spacex one would be mated to it. And areas where the suit could not provide direct pressure (I'm thinking mainly male genitals especially), you could also have a pocket of pressurised air within the suit.
      Liquid micro-channels for cooling could be built into it, or it could be very heat insulating and have heat-conductive strips forming a network connecting to the life support package. Which would likely be a backpack, or external, or "front pack" like a chest plate. Some degree of radiation shielding could be built in by using boron, lead etc atoms woven into the structure.
      Data could likewise be carried between different parts of the suit using strips of woven-in conductive materials or even fibre-optics (which would be excessive in therms of data bandwidth but might be safer). Sections of the suit could have woven-in microprocsssors - remember none of this has to be embedded into the suit, it can be *part of the material* by changing its nanoscale structure and chemistry in certain areas. So the microprocessors and virtually everything else can be flexible - not that it would matter since they'd be so small and could be built into hard parts of the suit like knee and shoulder pads, which could be useful anyway (magnetic back pads and kneepads anyone).
      The problem is using that type of suit in a pressurised capsule, where it could crush you! My two solution ideas are to have piezoelectric expansion/contraction seams that adjust the tightness according to external pressure, use a futuristic material that can expand and contact itself rapidly in response to an electrical or chemical signal given off by the control system.
      This is the future of spacesuits IMO, they'll be these fully-interated suits like a second skin, very safe and adaptive, so flexible you could do zero-G gymnastics in them, good looking and conceivably quite fashionable (especially loads of sexy space women wearing them around) - I'd expect them to become so fashionable that earthlings wear similar mock versions.

      RedButtonProductions What you are describing is called a counterpressure suit. They were first developed at JSC in the early 1970s. They look like nothing so much as long underwear, and brave was the man who first put one on and stepped into a vacuum chamber. Harvard University (or is it MIT?) is continuing research and development of the technology. I'm sure they will perfect it one day.

    It's great to see how these space companies are recognising you now, perhaps one day you might even be given an offer to experience actual space.
    Probably not in the near future but should there ever be a private space station and they want to show it off its not unreasonable to think they'd choose you, so keep up the good work and you might soon get to go to space *fingers crossed* and we'll get to experience it all with you

      Ed: Reading another comment, I just realized you might have been talking about their suborbital capsule. That's different. The video animations I have seen of that suggest passengers just wearing coveralls, not pressure suits.

    For all the Flat Earthers, vacuums don't suck. They also don't crush. Pressure pushes. That's why the spacesuit can work, it doesn't need to hold up to outside pressure, it just needs to keep the air in, like a balloon.

      even if we don't know any of the detail... any airtight stuff (either in space or underwater or even in hot plasma) will use rubber or rubber-like band to create an airtight seal. Even SRBs use rubber, ISS use rubber (see video titled "7 holes in ISS"), and ordinary plumbing use rubber... I reckon even a space-suit will use rubber or rubber-like band to create seal. There seem to be no other alternatives.

    • @xponen
      @xponen 6 лет назад

      @Mosern1977 , I imagine they won't be re-using it for too many time. I imagine the engineers who develop the suit have foreseen such incident happening so they will not certify the suit for use after a certain amount of wear/tear like an "x" amount of donning-in or zipping so that the whole suit is to be replaced by a new one.
