Yes, please to more sketchbook page ideas! Yesterday I was working in mine, using the Creative Insight writing prompts about symbols. And guess who I came to mind? Jim Dine and all his heart paintings - a good coincidence to hear you mention him this morning.😊

You’re so wrong 🤗 I’m a realism type artist (OCD really 🤓) but I’m finding sometimes you really speak to me; yesterday I started a new page in my sketch book and have been telling myself off ever since because I hadn’t finished the last page, when you said it was ok to have several pages on the go I was so relieved, how daft is that 😂. Several weeks ago I nearly gave up on a painting so as you suggest I let it stew and days later came back to it in a different mood and now done and pleased with it. I think it’s your ethic that relates to all artists whatever style media they are into. Brilliant, keep up the good work

@@gaynorpattle I am very open to all art, including the colourful hearts etc as a repeated subject created by Jim Dine. I’m personally drawn to his various printmaking techniques though, especially the paintbrushes, tools etc created by drypoint etching or lithography. Very interesting. Thank you for pointing him out, as he was unknown to me. You have a good week too.

Good morning Gaynor from the outer hebrides, it's a lovely sunny breezy day here. I watch your channel every week with a smile on my face, I think all your followers will be saying the same thing. Your sketchbook is fabulous, very inspirational and never boring always love seeing it, I am so enthused by it I am going to scrape some paint over a sketch I did yesterday of some ruined stone buildings, I wouldn't have thought of doing that before, thanks Gaynor😄

@@gaynorpattle I pulled the book out to have a look since I am obsessed with your cheese and snake plant work. You probably don’t need the book! Look at some image online before ordering…I don’t know about you but it’s gotten to where I need to sneak books into the house. 🤭
Actually, speaking of books…I just received a copy of Picasso and Paper. From a 2020 exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art. I love paper and I’ve never seen much of the work in the catalogue. There are also essays from several curators etc that I am reading slowly and savoring. Again, have a look online. I know Picasso has fallen out of favor and currently there is a large and delicate discussion about ‘separating the work from the monster’. Whether it’s Roman Polanski, Norman Mailer, Woody Allen the list goes on…. Don’t want to say too much on that, just wanted to acknowledge it. I do love the book.
Me again! I hope I’m not making you uncomfortable in any way….I also picked up the exhibition catalogue to the current Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in NY. I fell in love with show and really wanted to bring the images home with me. I was not through with them! Early works on paper - not what you would immediately think of when O’Keffee comes to mind. This I highly recommend for the abstraction and the process of reducing an initial sketch. SO inspiring! M xx

Hello Lori, take a few small steps....either find a subject you might like to explore or take a page and make random marks, play with colours, play with different mediums, most importantly just PLAY !!!!! Let me know how you get on 🥰

As suggested by you, I had made some tentative marks on my new journal. I'm trying not to be precious about it, so I took inspiration from your demonstration today and used my letter stencils on top and then I dragged a dry old stamp pad over the page. Wasn't sure what letters to use, but a childrens rhyme came to mind, so it was 1,2,345 drew a very childish fish and then 6,7,8,9,10 I'm sure you can guess the rhyme 🙂 It's going to be a long journey to find my way, but in the absence of adult education I'll soldier on.Thank you thank you thank you for sharing your immense talents with us. You have no idea how much we appreciate it

It is good to see how other people use their sketchbooks. What do you do to stop your acrylic paint pages sticking together Gaynor? Thank you for the Jim Dine recommendation - just looked him up - such bright colours! It's a shame that his History of Gardening gallery in London is now finished. Hope you have a great week and maybe get to enjoy your new painting table in the garden! 😊
I use silicone baking paper between the pages

A good question.....make sure they are bone dry before closing the book ! I leave my wet page open and it is usually left overnight . Yes, high hopes for the outside table.....as I type, the rain is falling 😂Have a good week !

What type of sketchbook are you using?
I love the Canson 180 gsm sketchbook with hard cover but I will work in anything with paper strong enough to take mixed media and I like a large format (A4) unless in 'Buddy' out and about sketchbook which is A5.
