Nice rig, and perfect for the small to medium size Kings. The larger Kings will inhale all three hooks and will cut your leader. That doesn't feel so good if you are fishing in a tournament and are only looking to catch that one large King for the day. Nice job on the video, thanks!

Is the swivel to prevent line twist? Also for a live sardine, if you hook the bottom hook just above the lower fins theyll dive straight down. The hooks will lay flat up against its body on the dive down. Works amazing.

Hey Heath, I've been wanting to catch kings for 3 spring seasons but hadn't got the chance. I live in Clearwater, FL. I've tried trolling Rapalas, Yozuris, Russelures, Trolling live bait etc and I just catch Spanish mackerels all day long but no kings. I've noticed you mention you free line dead bait. Do you anchor and then free line with the current? or you do some trolling?
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. The answer to your question is "no" I'm not anchored, I'm drifting when I flatline out sardines. For king's I've had great success trolling white bucktail jigs and gold spoons also. the thing is, you're on the west coast where the kings swim by fast during mating, the big ones are female, the dinks are male. Kings are real hungry when they migrate your way. Persistence is the key to success when fishing. I've gonna years without catching kings, and have had years where I was throwing them back there were so many. If you're gonna drift, make sure you are over a wreck or good structure, I find them on top, in the water column and on the bottom, once you find them, that's where they are happy with the temp and current. They are organized pack feeders, so the big ones eat first and the most, the dinks eat last and the scraps. Good luck and tight lines

I find that rigging it "backwards" tends to give the bait a more natural flow as it slowly falls to the sea bed... sometimes with the bait facing forward it'll spin in the current, looks unnatural and causes line twist. This is just my take on it. Some folks have better luck with it facing forward. Hope this helps. Tight lines & take care :)
Can you make a video on how you fish this rig? I work on a head boat and get lost at what I’m doing when I fish this rig on spinning reel. But catch a few on trailer hooks on a buck tail jig. But it would help if you showed me what I may be doing wrong. Some times I get lost on how much line I let out to flat line out the bait and I maybe too far out or too close in. I just want to know as well how far to let the bait out so it gets hit. And also I have a issue fishing for yellowtail when the currents a little strong. I can’t tell rather when I’m letting out line the fish are taking the bait or the currents just ripping my line off I fail and reel up with nothing at the end of my hook.

Hey John, 100% spot on with the hat, It's the best lookin' thing about me. yeah, nabbing mackerel with circle hooks is tough. It's possible though, but not really what it's made for. I know this works but I don’t understand the theory behind why it does. So you’re telling me kingfish have keen enough eyesight to be spooked by a super thin piece of wire but don’t get spooked by a chain of 3 long hooks dangling from the bait??
South Florida Saltwater Fishing Thanks for the reply. Im in south Florida as well. If you don’t mind me asking, when you are targeting kingfish, which depth are you targeting? Also, do you fish reefs, wrecks, etc.?
@@Jacob-ry3lu I go for Kings between 90 and 120. Yes I fish the reefs, wrecks, go deep dropping, slow pitch and speed jigging, troll up and down the coast. Always trying to mix it up a little. Tight lines.
Mono leaders are a sure way of losing a lot of tackle and a lot of kings. I have fished for king mackerel for over 25 years. Wire leader has made no difference for me in hookups. I use a 68lb steel leader with a 3 hook setup. I troll a duster with a ribbon fish. The ribbon fish are like candy to them. Occasionally I will use a 6oz trolling weight. I troll with the boat just in gear around a gas rigs. Its nothing to catch 10-20 within 3-5 hours. The wire leader can be used multiple times. Just have a leader straighter onboard. I get that everyone has their preferred way. But mono leaders are a huge no no to such a toothy fish.

Alot of commercial kingfish guys I've talk to swear by bronze hooks too , maybe they reflect less light in clear water .
