Check out the channel GST to hear loads of really great music from obscure Megadrive/Genesis titles. There's also a short video on there explaining how the FM sound in the Megadrive works.
There may be, but honestly, they are very rare. Making really good music for an FM Synth chip requires a G* D* GENIUS; you need someone with a high level understanding of programming, sound engineering, AND be a good music composer. People like that are rare, and easily get snatched up by the companies with big enough budgets to make the games that everyone has heard about. On simpler sound systems there is less technical understanding needed because of a lower ceiling, and on more advanced systems you can rely on samples to create a broader range of sounds. But the Genesis came about in an age where the musicians who lacked a strong technical understanding of the hardware could easily destroy their music with bad engineering. (It's probably why Nintendo elected to skip FM synth entirely.)
@@calebchild4467 If I recall, the Famicom Disk System had an FM synth system, resulting in some different music and sound effects in Metroid, Zelda 2, and others. The FM sound of the Genesis gave a strong arcade vibe to the system, which fit right in with Sega's early marketing.
SNES Drunk, I feel that I may be the biggest fan of your music compilation videos. I listen to them so often! I wasn't even the most avid Sega player, but these tracks make me want to dance! You have a way of arranging the songs and I just wanted to say, WELL DONE. 🍻 I've been enjoying your videos for about a year now, and you do them best, honestly.
***** This is a pretty legit selection Snesdrunk keep it up man. Empire Final Assault (Gunstar), Ice Cap, Whirlwind, Comix Zone, Laughter, great picks! I appreciate you for not being a blind close-minded Snes-fanboy who suffers from childhood nostalgia suffocation lol. Awesome work dude! Its better when you play ALL the classic games from an era instead of just a portion, ignoring the rest.
Never has there been a better boss theme to match the tone of fight than Phantasy Star IV’s "Laughter" both times that it’s played. While the fight with Lashiec was epic especially after clearing out the Air Castle, this theme truly shines when you’re fighting Zio. What starts as a rescue mission turns into a “Oh shit” when he shows up. Before you know it, you’re fighting in a space atmosphere and while he looks daunting already, his first move is to put up a magic barrier then summon “Nightmare”. Well, you know what happens from there.
I normally come to your channel for the insightful thoughts on classic games, and great vibes but today I'm here using your sweet playlist just to chill and get some work done. Thanks for the arrangement, especially liked the inclusion of game art! I hadn't really seen videos like this in your uploads so if I'm wrong sorry but if you're not still making some of these every once in a while you should get back on it!
Great list! Have you ever listened to the Adventures of Batman & Robin ost? Jesper Kyd really is a genius. I just can't believe how good that soundtrack is. I crave playing that game primarily so I can throw on my headphones and blast the ost while I play.
To answer your question: No limitations, that's why. If you look at even the 8-bit Nintendo there were plenty of memorable tunes that came out of it. Game devs had to push themselves with less, and sometimes *less is more.*
@唐三藏 So if we're getting Darwinian here, the organisms that can best adapt to a changing environment, are still at the mercy of intangible "era." Scary!
@唐三藏 Held captive by our mortality? As long as we externalize the knowledge we have learned, to the next generation, then humans really aren't limited by their life spans. Think of all the industrial revolutions to bring us to this point! Now if a virus pandemic wipes out *all* of the human race, that's another story.
rocket knight adventures and musha also had great soundtracks in general. they really used the unique sound of the genesis to their advantage. nice list.
Nice video. Love the Mega Drive and its Yamaha YM2612 FM synthesizer. Really great music is made for this platform. Streets of Rage: Moon Beach, Beatnik on the Ship. Outrun: Magical Sound Shower and so on....
Great choice! Take a look at these also and see if you like them: Aladdin - Arab Rock Batman (Sunsoft) - Stage 1 Gotham City Streets 1 Desert Strike - Main Theme Dune - The Lego Tune Cool Spot - Rave Dance Tune Golden Axe - Wilderness John Madden Football - Tittle Music Rings of Power - Tavern Theme Road Rash 3 - Title Screen RoboCop Versus The Terminator - Angel The Lost Vikings - Wacky World
Castlevania music, Reincarnated Soul pt.2 stage music is my favorite Genesis song ever! It's my ringtone since I've played the game for the first time. Nice choice.
Comix Zone is a great game... As a comics fan myself I can agree it's great... And the music. Good lord, for a Genesis is awesome... 90's grooviness at its finest...
Solid list. I have a large playlist of videos dedicated to the MD/GEN sound chip on my channel since years ago and many of my favourites are in there. I'll post a few of my top tracks in a bit. Are these emulation or hardware recordings, by the way? I'm guessing the sooner.
Wow! That shinobi 3 tune is absolute class! Dont remember hearing it before, despite having played it. Im wondering why theres no tunes on this list from thunder force 4? Or zero wing?
Fucking great list! but 17 is too short! - No M.U.S.H.A. - No Ristar - No Thunder Force IV or any game made by Technosoft - No Verytex (crappy shoot'emup, but awesome music)
I agree that those soundtracks just have to be on any "Best Gen music" video but perhaps he's not into metal or never played those games. (I'm speaking off Musha and TF).
Not a bad selection. The Genesis sound was an acquired taste for me - aside from Sonic; everyone likes Sonic - but Time Trax (50hz version; the 60hz version sounds like bad '90s dance music that you'd hear in an aerobics class) was my gateway drug. I might also recommend Battletoads & Double Dragon (best version), Crusader of Centy, Devilish, Dragon's Fury, Dune 2 (Frank Klepacki!), Gauntlet 4, Ghostbusters, High Seas Havoc, Jewel Master, Junction, Chaotix (it totally counts!), Light Crusader, Monster World 4, Popful Mail (it counts, too!), the Valis titles, and World of Illusion. I know it's a lot, but they don't get enough mentions, if you ask me. Dustin Odell's channel is a good way to get into it, too; I used to throw that on in the background while doing other stuff.
I'd have selected Sonic1 : Green Hill Zone and Marble Zone in favor of Kid Chameleon and Comix Zone. Personal preference, really. In general all megadrive/genesis tunes were killer.
Skipping the obvious, here's some less-than-heralded cuts: Midnight Resistance - "Flood of Power" (this wails) Ys III: Wanderers From Ys - "Be Careful" (I think this is better than even the PCE-CD version) Rocket Knight Adventures - "Kingdom of Zebulos" Rocket Knight Adventures - "Mountain Range" Rocket Knight Adventures - "Kingdom of Devotindos" Golden Axe III - "Golden Mound" Golden Axe III - "Tender Hamlet" Space Invaders '91 - "Rounds 1 & 9" Space Invaders '91 - "Rounds 2, 11, 14" TMNT Hyperstone Heist - "Inside Shredder's Hideout" (listen to that YM2612 twangin' hard) TMNT Hyperstone Heist - "Outside Shredder's Hideout" (double your pleasure, double your fun) ...And for something that isn't really good, but somehow feels satisfying anyway, Road Rash - "Grass Valley"
great list but i would also recommend adding sonic and knuckles lava reef act 1, the ooze stage 1-c/ 3-c Awesome track. and rocket knight adventures stage 2A or as i call it surfing down to boogie town. Rocket knight adventures stage 5 and stage 7 and the Boss track is awesome!!!!

Jurrasic Park: Visitor's Center......... No debate, hands down best genesis song
I think anything from ToeJam and Earl or Kid Chameleon are the best tracks BUT, I have to throw the following in as tip tops: Kid Chameleon - Options/City Area ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron - Lewanda's Love Sonic 3 Music: Hydrocity Zone Act 1 Sonic 3 Music: Hydrocity Zone Act 2 Cool Spot - Beach Music
Nice list! Goes to prove how good the music on Genesis could actually be when designed by people who knew what they were doing. Too bad SO many Genesis games sounded like total garbage that was just grating on the ears. These tunes however, sound amazing!
The beginning of the Streets of Rage 2 track sounds oddly like the Windows XP installation music. Or, I guess it would be the other way around since SoR2 came first.
No thunder force 4? That game could've taken every slot on this list there's something like 20 tracks in that game and they're all bangers. Still good picks though.
miamimagicians Because Nintendo is the shit. In truth alot of snes music started to sound like real music. Look a killer instinct the opeing theme sounded perfect. Least that's how I feel. Sega had some great themes as well, Snes still impressed me a little bit more.
Great selection. If anyone needs any more recommendations, there's Mega Turrican and Sol Feace (though this is actually Sega CD but whatever, it's good). Also any track from Sonic 1 is better than the ones from Sonic 2.
Well, I do disagree with some of the tracks on this list. I will list 17 tracks off the top of my head in no particular. All are welcome to disagree. Hey - it says in the video we're free to leave comments, and to 'enjoy it or not'. I'm not saying these are bad tunes, just not particularly memorable!
Eric Ferrier oh... I get your point... well I kinda grew up playing these exact games... so to me, they have that nostalgic feel... thats why i think the songs are memorable... but you are right... everyone has different tastes :)
Does Genesis music sound like sound effects mixed together into tunes to anybody else but me? I never understood why Sega's fan base stood so steadfastly behind the music on the system. It's just a small step beyond the music produced in the third generation. Someone please help me understand.
+Beau Sample The genesis is a synthesized audio chip, and when use properly, it sounds freaking awesome. Also, some of us just love SEGA and the Genesis. Also, back in the 1990's, the first console war began. It was between the Genesis and the SNES. One of the things that people though was better on the SNES was the audio. But actually, according to this long paragraph pasted here, The SNES chip may be more capable, but it has severe limitations. Theses limitations revolve around how it uses its audio ram. The genesis, with its 8k audio ram, is fine. It actually could probably do fine with 6k due to the synthesizer making very effective use of its audio ram.. However, the SNES, having a non synthesized audio chip, is constantly filling the audio ram and making a terrible use of it. 64k may sound like enough, but 64k audio ram is not enough for the SNES. That's why it sounds muddy and has no bass. Also not to mention, the genesis can swap its memory faster due to its 7 MHZ cpu. I will admit, if the SNES did not have its memory bottleneck and slow CPU, it would be better than the genesis. But the factor is Nintendo was really stupid when they designed the SNES, and even the N64 (Controlled entirely by the GPU), and SEGA's engineering division was superior in many ways. If they had built a system meant to kick the SNES out of the market, they could have done so. But you have to remember that the Genesis was meant to compete with the NES. I will say that the Genesis has terrible graphical capabilities compared to the SNES. the genesis sounds better in some circumstances. So when we are defending the systems music, we are defending it against the people that say the SNES sounds better, which it does in some circumstances.
I like your comment and agree with your info but for future ref, its easier on the reader if you put paragraph breaks throughout your comment so its not a big blob of text. Makes ppl wanna just breeze past it.
The box art front AND back was a very nice touch. ah.. the back. was like the game trailers of the 90's
wow 5 years later
definitely agree,
There are over 900 games made for the Megadrive/Genesis. I bet there are some really good tunes on really obscure games very few people know about.
andyukmonkey That's one of the main reasons i'm still atracted to the Genesis nowasdays, i'm still looking for such kind of games today
Try Decap Attack.

I think it's hilarious how the ToeJame & Earl track sounds just like a Seinfeld episode.
It's incredible how good the Phantasy Star IV OST is. Simply fantastic.

Was aboiut to post about this Soundtrack! It's so good. The game is pretty challening without cheats, but is also really solid.
A lot of people don’t seem to like that soundtrack, and I think Drunk is one of them
Why don't modern games have music as good as this?

I always see Circus in Rindo over and over again. There's some great and dramatic songs in the OST that deserve equal if not more.
I miss SEGA on the console market
Hard Corps level 1 just gets my blood pumping something fierce
Just wondering, were these running off an emulator? I noticed the music in streets of rage 2 sounded a bit....off.

Eric Ferrier I think all of them are memorable... at least for me.... '-'
They may be technically good, or feature some creative use of sound. That doesn't make them memorable, IMO. I guess everyone has different tastes.
