I love your philosophy! When I was about 16 years old I tried to learn how to freehand sharpen on my own. I knew no one who could teach me. So I tried and failed over and over and over again and finally gave up. My love of knives continued but I ended up trying to find shortcuts and easy ways to sharpen a knife all with less than stellar results. The closest I ever came to success was using a Spiderco Sharpmaker. Lots of work, virtually no flexibility, but an acceptable edge. Started that about 10 years ago. After retiring I decided that I wanted to spend time and learn how to hand sharpen. Thank God for RUclips!! I'm still not very good but I am learning and I can at least get a blade sharp! And there is just something that's soothing and meditating about sharpening by him. I'll look forward to following your channel and seeing where you go!!

This is exactly the type of series I have been looking for!! I'm a knife enthusiast and I know the bare minimum to keep my knives at their current level using a ceramic or Arkansas rod, but not beyond that. Every knife channel on youtube says the same thing, "Learn how to sharpen...", but there are barely any videos/advice beyond "Find the angle of your knife" and "Make the same number of passes on each side". I am very much looking forward to the tutorials!!!

I have been sharpening everything with only a Fallkniven DC4 stone so I can own the skill of field sharpening with that stone. The best part of our craft is the time and focus everything takes. Time flies when your mind is not worrying about normal responsibilities or things out of our own control. I can't wait to see the rest of this series.

Freehand sharpening is very therapeutic. I find it very relaxing.

Great start to a much needed series. I personally use Dan's Arkansas Stones. I use the soft (medium grit), hard (fine grit), and the translucent (extra fine grit). I get the pocket sized stones so I can use them at home our when I'm out crafting bushes. LOL. Seems to work just fine for my needs.

Buy the stones on Amazon. The 8k is $58 and 320 and 1000 are under $40. I also use 2k sometimes. The Shaptons are amazing stones, love the 1k. Also get a flattening stone, I use atoma 400 for flattening, works great.

I wish someone somewhere will tell people a WorkSharp Ken Onion only works on 110volts. If you just plug it into any outlet it will pop pop then burn out.

Anyone that uses sharp tools should know how to sharpen the tools that they use. It takes practice to be able to sharpen by hand so if a beginner wants to use a sharpening device to start with that’s ok. It just depends on the tool and the user and how sharp it needs to be to do the task at hand. Good video keep up the good work.

Best Sharpening system: 400, 1000 and 3000 grit set sharpening stones or sandpaper, combined with a (kangaroo) leather strop and newspaper. No need to go higher on stones grit,if you strop the knife on leather and then newspaper. (How to sharpen tips): Excample: Every 50 passes per side on the 400 grit stone, you have to do double (100 passes per side on the next 1000 grit). Then you have to do triple passes on the 3000 grit. The only part that you don't have to work more,is the final step, stroping on newspaper.Remember to keep the right angle, never put to much convexing on the edge and regularly, carefully check the edge as you progress. This is how I do it,this is the only way,I get very very long lasting scary sharp edges on my knives!

Running behind on videos, see this has 5 dislikes 3 days in, what is wrong with them? Growing up all we ever used was the 2 sided cheap stone, got the job done just was not great. Have tried multiple little pocket sharpners and current camp pack is a smiths 4 in coarse and fine diamond with a piece of leather glued to the cover. Have seen waterstones before but generally whats recommended cost over $100 a stone.

I'm not good at holding the angle to sharpen freehand. I picked up an India Combination Oilstone IBE, Craftsman Combination puck, a double of pucks with tapered/chamfered edges, a carborundum pocket stone, a large rectangular stone with 3 V-grooves on one side, a pocket diamond rod in a metal case, and I think one for fishing gear. A new cheap mill file. Access to a bench grinder though I have a small lightweight grinder, and a flex grinder thingy that goes to a drill, I think. There's a handle out near where the stone would be.
I have a new Guardian machete that is not even factory sharp. The two grinds are shaped in though. How can I sharpen it?.

Awesome! I was just looking to getting a stone. I was looking at a trend diamond plate 300/1000 grit. It is a little over $100. I knicked up my favorite knife on a rock🙁 my LT Wright Lagom. Do you think I can fix it with this plate?

What's Will's way to do convex? A old school mousepad secured under different grits of sandpaper? It's alot of work to convex on a flat stone

I’ve been waiting for a series like this! I’m deff ready to leave these other systems and get with the old tried and true!
So I have a technique of stropping I’m proud of. It’s what I did to my edges before I hit the leather I’m not happy with.
So your saying this kit will get me threw, but your gonna keep showing us better brands in the same girts?
    I’ll wait and watch.

That's not a good 8000 grit polished edge, I can see scratches and it's not as shiny as it should be.For beginers: As an excample: don't jump from 1000 to 8000 grit.Go 1000 then 3000 etc. Also you have to multiply the passes, every time you go higher on grit. You have to double and then triple the passes as you go higher on grit.I have made another comment on this video,to share some tips.Feel free to ask me for advice.
