    Are you interested in an in depth but very cool way of explaining how a vane technically works? Converts wind to rudder movement? I swear it's crazy ingenious. Please don't say no because the video is already done and scheduled for mid next week.

    Only drawback I have experienced with the Hydrovane mounted off center is that it picks up sargassum weed. A problem that perhaps will increase in the future. We had to make a fork to be able to push the weed down under the Hydrovane rudder when we crossed from Cap Verde to Brazil. This troubled us for a day or two. At it's climax we had to do this maneuver every 5 minutes.
    Apart from this we absolutely love our extra crew member. It does not need to be fed. It does not get tired and performs just as well after 20 hours as the first 5 minutes.
    It's much better than an autopilot when on a close hauled as it will take advantage of any temporary wind shift.

    • @seethelittlethings
      @seethelittlethings  7 месяцев назад

      100% agree. Sargassum was a pain but solved with boat hook (fork) sliding down. Added risk by having to do this from the sugar scoop, mitigated by tethering of course.

    Great explanation of hydrovane. We’ve had ours for the past 7 years and all your advantages are completely correct. It has saved us after autopilot problems on an Atlantic crossing, and been invaluable sailing the pacific to Australia. One possible disadvantage to watch out for: the clip securing the rudder can be very sharp, we know because we punctured our dinghy not being careful enough when loading a stern anchor into the dinghy.
    Good luck explaining how it works. It’s mesmerising to watch, but difficult to understand !

    Eine Windsteueranlage muss sein! Auch wenn sehr teuer, habt ihr ja dann tatsächlich auch ein Ersatzruder. Da liegt allerdings auch ein Problem. Ein Pendelruder klappt bei Widerstand weg und nix passiert, aber die Hilfsruder können bei Kontakt mit Fremdkörpern enorme Kräfte auf den Rumpf ausüben, siehe "Plan B", der wegen eines dadurch entstandenen Lecks im Heckspiegel sein neues Boot aufgeben musste, soviel zu: keine bekannten Schäden an Hydrovane WSA.
    Alles Gute, Klaus

    Great job. I almost purchased a Hydrovane, the sales person in the United States grossly over priced the item so I did not purchase. I leaned the Hydrovane does not work in low wind conditions, I am a solo sailor and would get exhausted hand sailing in these conditions. Let me know how it works for you as I value your opinion and your honesty.

Would you ever consider the 18 to 20 day passing to somewhere like the Bahamas? Beautiful, calm anchorages and the most beautiful waters in the world!!

    • @seethelittlethings
      @seethelittlethings  2 года назад +1

      Hey Susan! We’re technically not married :) Usually you’ll cross from the Canary Islands to somewhere Windward/West Indies so you can cruise the windward islands and then make your way downwind to the Bahamas and US. Simply because it’s a shorter trip and it’s harder to get back there in case you wanted to see them. If the goal is to get to the Bahamas as quick as possible, the usual stop is Antigua and then start another leg from there

    A number of reasons you chose HydroVane match mine but it's not problem free - at least from my experience it's not.
    Biggest thing was the installer (I didn't want to buy a heavy enough drill for example, as I'm Australian and had mine fitted in England, and have too many tools on board as it is) got things wrong and the unit was effectively twisted so that the HydroVane rudder didn't point exactly correctly. When motoring with the unit locked off, I needed to apply about 5 degrees of port rudder to overcome the error. Not hard to fix but a damned pest when I realised the extent of the problem during a squally solo crossing of Biscay recently. The installation instructions really understate the issue of alignment I think.
    Also not so easy for me to detach the HydroVane rudder as for you guys. I sail a Hallberg-Rassy 38 and the stern is pretty much cut off square, rather than having a sugar scoop and no way I will balance on my swim ladder to do the job, especially as I mostly sail single-hand. It does create a problem for me, although I really haven't found a new problem manoeuvring in marinas, just my boat reverses like a drunk pig anyway and I mostly dock bow in; stern docking presents that problem for me but what about all that expensive equipment projecting from the stern if you do? I really fear bending that shaft if I dock stern-in.
    I do have a clashing problem, a bit like with your bimini but worse - but I had no alternative, just the realities of my rear deck, which is fairly narrow too. Your sugar stoop is a bonus here as that puts your wind vane further aft of the solar arch than my stern does. I had a new solar arch made in England, and, while it's 7 feet high, there is a clash of the vane on one side. Can't be helped - the stern layout is as it is and, as the boom comes well back so I couldn't build the arch to be further forward. If it comes to being a problem on my upcoming solo Atlantic crossing, from here at Portugal, then I'll just sail an altered course.
    I bought the new, adjustable wind vane too, instead of the one you have. I can slide the vane up and down, mostly to help with the clashing problem, and that it's broader too gives me a wider range of adjustments than with the your standard vane or the dumpy vane option..
    An issue that I have noticed though, that you didn't mention, is that when sailing upwind, the mainsail is apt to dump wind onto the vane and it's that, rather than any sheltering from the dodger, that I watch out for.

    • @seethelittlethings
      @seethelittlethings  3 года назад

      Hey Joel, for sure a finger pontoon and stern to was really useful. You can tie down the boat quite hard and make it stop swaying for the time of installation and measuring. I’m sure it’s even possible on a buoy but we wouldn’t want to do it any other way.

    • @seethelittlethings

      Also we didn’t really need it in the med. It probably would’ve been great. But it’s a lot mor active sailing and changing course. So we did like having the electric autopilot for that. But that’s our preference of course :). We mainly wanted it for the longer passages.

    As for the dinghy as an easy one James. As in James's chauffeur the DNA takes you where you got to go it's so for you from here to there so James the chauffeur... LoL 😹😆😹😆... Well at least that makes sense in this old biker's head... LoL 😂🤣😂🤣
    Well you kids be blessed in Jesus name... BBE 🤗🤗

    I watched another video on vanes by a manufacturer and found out how you cracked the bracket. You tightened up the wrong bolts first. You did it intuitively, which in this case was wrong. For the record, a friend outfitted his mono with a wind vane, in 1967. There was no such thing as an autopilot.

    Not a fan of wind vane, but no electricity autopilot and back up rudder are a big advantage.

    I’m a little disappointed in the amount of research you guys did regarding wind vane systems and the fact you MISSED the 2nd biggest brand not to mention the Pioneer of the industry Dr Stellan Knoos.
    You know the Areospace Engineer who invented SailOMat ?? Since 1974 made and sold in San Diego. Not to mention the FAMOUS sailing moments like Naomi James in 1978 who did the Globe and used it to obtain the Fastest time around Cape Horn by ANY women. ( it’s women’s month so I had to quote that ). Then the #1 author all about Windvanes Bill Morris published The Wind Vane Self Steering Handbook. Ya guys. Please if you’re going to cover a topic use Google if it’s a new topic for you and fully research the product your going to discuss. The SailOMat is the most reliable , least scientific mind to use required Windvane made and is far more reliable in both light and Force 9 winds than any Hydrovane. Hydrovane is over priced and it DOES require sail trimming and maintenance. When you do a crossing with your new one, you’ll see.

      Ps. SailOMat will ship anywhere anyhow you like. They’ll go as far as having another cruiser deliver it to you if possible

      @@seethelittlethings Yeah another dead sailing channel. RUclips is a graveyard of dead sailing channels. The chick always gets pregnant or they realize being a fake RUclips sailor is exhausting and a lot of work. Most last about 2 years then throw in the towel.

      Hahaha the amount of old sailing channels is less than the amount of arm chair sailors that complain, bitch and moan about people providing free content for a while whilst living their dream and then returning to normal life 😘
