This video is a deep dive into the magical underpinnings of casting a circle. What is a circle? Do you need one? What types of magic don't necessarily need a circle? How do you create a magical circle of protection? A circle is often considered one of the foundational tools of some types of witchcraft. But we don't often go into describing what it is or how it works.

I have to say, it's nice to see an older witch on RUclips. I like and follow the kids, but still it's weird to see a 24 year old girl talking about Crone energy.

That's the occult content of RUclips that I used to know. It was actually the 90s kid who started this stuff of talking about information beyond their age, some of the 70s and 80s kids used to call them "fluff bunny" and years later their toxicity has been passed down to the Gen Zs.
Great video. It is good to see a mature witch giving succinct instructions. My background is ceremonial majick and the purpose of my circle is to keep invoked spirits outside and to never exit a circle during a working. I am fortunate to be able to have permanent consecrated circles that can be opened and closed. I have dedicated circles drawn on white cloth large enough for me and maybe one other participant. I agree that for most personal meditations or offerings a circle is not necessary. But if one summons a spirit, be inside a circle for your own protection. Blessings.

I cast a circle of protection to ward off evil spirits and ill intentions of others, also a call to invite my guardians to guide me in my working and through out the ritual and the manifestation of what I desire. Daily affirmations and a quick circle in the morning helps to start my day. I consider the ritual a jumping off point into more serious practice and this signals to higher faculties to be more engaged and vigilant.

Casting a circle for myself is essential when I am working within a coven or solitary, it also adds a degree of protection.

I am appreciative of your work on this channel. Thank you. I'm a 45 year old man husband and father of 3 magnificent children. I'm not a chef..nor a commercial cook however I can walk into a kitchen and weave wonders. A little from my mother however mainly instinctual. I was born into some horrific, angry violent trauma and I have to be mindful of my tendency to steer towards dark magic. I have been apart of covens in the past, and I really do enjoy circle's with others (as long as they are not to big). I have found though these days...no one wants a 45 y/o white man apart of their coven so I tend to cast circles and spells on my own. I love your reinforcement of making each ritual your own. I sprinkle grits about 3 days prior over a large area and ant hills etc in my woods so when we are barefoot, we are not bitten, I then use a generous amount of salt for the circle .... keeps the bugs away ... we use brooms counter- clockwise also. I live in mountains with a river downstream, so no mosquitos. I've never had anyone need to go potty during circle. Very focused.

I've never cast a circle, but I was under the impression that you have to if doing a freezer binding spell.

Thanks for asking! Where you start varies from tradition to tradition. I was to to start the circle casting in the north. But many people do start in the east. And I do actually face north when I start. But adapt it to your needs and space and mobility.

How nice to find you here, on the Eve of Autumn's Equinox! I'm 61, and have been practicing for 45 years. I am alone this evening, and decided to look for some ways to freshen up my practice a bit. Your suggestion to imagine casting a sphere, as opposed to a circle is such a simple thing, I can't believe that it never occurred to me. It seems like it could be very useful, particularly when working in other dimensions. Thankyou so much for sharing your craft with us. I am a new subscriber.

How do you recommend closing a circle when complete?
There are many ways to do that, My favorite is to use my hands and use them to sweep the circle open in a counter clockwise direction. I often will ad a phrase like "The circle is open but unbroken". If you have used a physical line of string, chalk, salt or herbs to mark the boundaries of the circle you can remove it or break the line up and scatter it with your feet or hands.

I always cast because I love to call on the elements for protection before I do a spell or to create a safe and sacred space for the witches joining my circle.

I haven’t been doing much magic anymore because when I cast a circle it’s really hard for me to find north east south and west. And then I have to mark each with a candle so I don’t forget.
Not everyone casts a circle. And some people just feel a circle emanate out from their body. As we change our practice changes. However you adapt it for yourself is perfect.
How do you cut the magic off someone that needs to leave the circle?
Some traditions cut an arch with an athame and then reclose it and some traditions believe that you have to commit to staying

However to be clear on casting a circle, at the beginning of my ritual I can choose to open a circle and at the end of my ritual I close my circle?
Or is it the other way around?
I think of it a s casting or creating the enclosure of the circle at the beginning and opening the circle at the end. Good question. It's a bit opposite to how we usually think about things
How do you close the circle? Or do you not have to? I see a lot of people talking about closing the circle after the work is done and I'd like to know how/if you do it. I'm new to all this, sorry. 😅
Hi Kiki great question. I should have included that in the video. Sorry. Different people do it in different ways. What I do is when I am done with my magical work I turn in a counterclock wise direction turning around in a complete circle, visualizing or imagining the circle dissolving into the earth. The I usually say something like the circle is open. But you can also say something like it is done or I am done. This is what a lot of witches refer to as closing the circle which is done at the end. Which really means closing or ending the work. I think the terminology is confusing so if you meant somethig else rather than what you do at the end please let me know and I will do my best to answer. Thank you for asking.

Thankyou for such an informative video. My question is this...I live in the southern hemisphere.....a lot of people down here cast differently to the northern hemisphere . They cast anticlockwise but to me that feels weird. I start at the east and go clockwise and then go widdershins for closing circle. What is your feeling about this? Am I upsetting the universe??lol I have another question.
Another thing I really struggle with is the wheel of the year because down here everything is opposite to the north! It feels weird celebrating Yule (which is what your guys would be doing)in 48 degree heat for example but at the same time if you reverse all the equinoxes etc the poor spirit realms have to do everything twice a year......am I the only crazy person who thinks this way!!!?
Thank you Alahna. I am a big proponent of doing what feels right to you. Personally, I would still cast clockwise starting from east to south.
For the wheel of the year again this is just my personal belief, but the way I work with those holidays is by connecting to the local plant and weather spirits and energies and celebrate them. So I don't think the spirits are having to do things twice. The wheel of the year is great and historically the way pre-christiam and early-christian people worked with the seasons magically varied a lot from region to region based on climate and weather. So I believe it's helpful to adapt it to where you live to make it relevant. I'm actually thinking about doing a wheel of the year video soon.

Was told to do a salt circle cause I’ve been seeing floaters after my spiritual awakening and my friend who is a witch said she thinks it could be dark forces cause I’m so tired too and a dark witch neighbor put a spell on my family even left a demon spell box on our property line. What do you think ?
I think you and your local witch friend can probably read the situation better than I can. But try some protection like salt circles etc and see what happens. With floaters and fatigue I would also get it physically checked out as well.
The circle allows for very clarified magic. The spirits gods and goddesses like when I cast a circle and do a full ceremony

I don’t know who my ancestors are whom I can call to . My grandmother who I loved very much died like 26 years ago and was not a witch, and I don’t want to disturb her resting in peace! Also I have at least 2 ghosts in my house, I’m not afraid of them ( I personally only saw 1 of them) but I don’t know how to do magic without dragging them into it OR should I let the white one that I saw, into my magic??
Thanks for asking. If you cast a circle it will help keep ghosts out.Which is usually good. I will probably do an ancestor video in the fall, but in general most ancestors want to help you. So you won't disturb thier peace. They can choose whether to show up if you call. Some people simply say something like I call any ancestor who is benevolent and has my best interest at heart. I’be decided to attempt witchcraft and magic, but I have access to almost none of the things needed, like magical items (parents), candles and incense sticks (I’m very afraid of fire sadly) and certain crystals (I only have a few and probably wouldn’t be allowed to get more)
I'm sorry that's your situation. That will shift at some point. There are quite a few videos out there about practicing when you need to remain hidden. And it's also important to stay safe and just do research if it would put you in jeopardy if your parents found out. You will be able to practice safely once you are of age or have your own place. If it's safe there's a lot you can do in the meantime. Best of luck.

Hi Anita thanks for sharing that. I think many people feel that way. And it's fine to wait until you feel ready. If you want you can research and find something very simple. Maybe something that is not super important. Then just keep going and build confidence. Also it's fine to just do research or work with deity and attend other peoples rituals that they are leading if there are any in your area. You don't have to do spells if you don't feel ready. That makes sense. Visualizing is sometimes hard. Some people just use their imagination since that is closely connected to the part of your brain that is able to work magic and eventually it comes. But if that doesn't work you might try taking time to train your brain to visulize. It's a learned skill for sure. Hearthwitch has an excellant video on that training process and the steps involved. I bought a crystal ball the other day and cleansed it when I got home. I then asked to see the fae, and I saw a purple orb ebbing, so I asked it to change its appearance if it was from the fae world. It changed to a bigger black orb, and started floating up and down. It only felt slightly negative, but I know black orbs can be warnings or negative entities. I used to connect with the fae a few years ago, but stopped when stumbled away from my main path. Now I have a slight fear of inviting them into my life at the moment, and feel that now isn't the right time. I think it is possible that the fae don't want me involved right now, or a certain faerie being fed my fear. What are your thoughts on this black orb? Thanks.
