You don't have to match colors of your reference photo. The key is to understand Light and shadow and how you can use warm and cool colors to create the contrast. Don't go for details instead focus on depth and perspective. Try to use basic colors and try mixing them instead of using various options, this will improve your understanding of colors.

Thanks a lot for your advice! Before watching this video, I wanted my paintings absolutely 100% the same as yours and I felt stressed. Now I feel more relaxed because as you said. Such fantastic advice to hesitant beginners like myself! I've begun doing art to relive my stress and anxiety and I'm really loving it. I create a lot of crap, but occasionally, I surprise myself by making something really delicate and pretty. I often ask myself who I'm kidding, taking up art out of nowhere and at my age. I often have to counsel myself and remind myself why I'm doing it and to please tap into some joy and not get competitive.
Your advice, to my ears, was so full of love and compassion. It has given me a shot of courage and convinced me to take more risks! I don't know where this path is taking me, but this video was a beautiful milestone and and it will stay with me for a long, long time...
    Thank you!

To be positive is matter to habit and practice. Once it's become your nature you won't go back.
One way to overcome issues is to imagine life after 5 years and know that that time today will be faint memory and what is happening today won't matter.
Showing you that things change and there is no point worrying about today.
Second thing about being positive in mind set is to be happy with whatever you have.
There are many more things. Personally last time I was worried was 2017 when I lost my wife. Before it 1992 was last time I was ever worried or sad.

recently got an artist grade colour pan (windsor violet) from Winsor & Newton. The difference is incredible, when uses in wet on wet the colour literally explodes, and is so much more pigmented that you can really get a lot out of little pigment.

I love making art when I was just a kid but when I entered high school I stopped making an art because I compared myself to my classmate who seem doing his art perfectly only from his imagination. So I tell myself "ah okay, I'm not really a good artist because I can't even create without using references" so I hold this mindset inside me for almost 8 years. Now in the middle of pandemic, I gave myself a chance to try and create again. I'm so glad I am finally starting to free myself from the guilt everytime I will use references 🥺 thank you for mentioning that, I really appreciate this video ♥️🥺

I’m new to watercolour and I totally agree about leaving some time and look at it again at a later date! For me, with any kind of creative work, it’s because it doesn’t match the image in my mind. After time has passed, the image in my mind fades and I can more clearly see the artwork for what it really is, not in comparison to my imagination!

  • @seapossumsforrest8162

Great Topic! I have had problems breaking out the supplies without expecting something I like. Stefan Baumann talks about how when you practice painting you should not expect a masterpiece every time, you should think of it like learning to play an instrument, you never want to hear your 'learning' practice, you work towards getting better, falling in love with the process. Practice makes perfect is what my music teachers said. Plus, on an instrument, you play the hard measures and 'wood shed' them down to tiny bits don't play the music from top to bottom wrong notes and then stop over and over. Play only the difficult measures at first. Break them down, slow the tempo, change the rhythm, speed it up faster than you can play it, sing it, dissect note for note until it is under your fingers and a song in your heart. Then work it into the whole piece. I think sketch books are made for 'awful noses, ears, hands, feet' the little difficult pieces to paint. The pressure to make a good sketch book is ridiculous, sure get good practice, but keep trying new difficult pictures. Thank you for being so inspiring!

"don't judge your painting too early" - omg this is so true! I myself have the disgusting habit of looking at an unfinished piece and thinking, wtf am I doing 😅

Thank you soooo much ;* I almost quit on painting because I feel like I don't have any progress and my paintings are ugly. But then I watched this video and finally I feel encouraged.
