- Just installed, Gold Owl mats in my newly reconstructed high banker. Mark from Gold Stream Placer supply, supplied me with some of the new Gold Owl sluice mats. He wants everyone to know they are now available in Canada and the USA from his store, in Grand Prairie "Gold Stream Placer Supply" (Link Below) This video shows me installing them in my sluice, and testing them at the Trout Creek claim.

*I love it! The whole set up looks so clean too. Im pretty sure you just convinced me to make my own custom high banker. Thanks for sharing!*
Impressive mats. Your Canadian teacherness didn’t go unnoticed, metric framing square. :)
This matting looks fantastic, two, TWO profiles in one. I am looking forward to future high banker videos demonstrating this Gold Owl matting. Thanks Dan Hurd!
I'm going to be testing the mats again (on video) - I pretty pleased so far.
That would be awesome
I bought a monster highbanker from mark and i’m super happy with it and the service from him..thanks mark!
It's always nice to have an alternative choice for products of a like nature. Thanks Dan for the heads up. Keep the videos coming. Nice work well displayed.
Thanks! I think they are both fabulous products
That gold owl matting is pretty slick. I love the fact that it is double sided. I also like the fact that you dont have to tape the sections together. I just have a feeling this matting is going to be pretty pricey.
No taping and no glue are big bonuses.
Very slick my gears are turning Great stuff Dan
Thanks! Two profiles in one is pretty awesome.
:-)
Nice matting. I just finished building my own sluice box and I think I am going to try this product out. Where I live, 90% of the gold is small, and I do mean small, so, everything has to be just right, and with this aggressive matting, I am hoping that these fines won't 'escape', like it does with just about every other matting product out there. Because of this, there aren't many people around here who prospect or mine. My opinion is that they think that because they aren't getting easily spotted color in every pan, the state is 'dry'. Great video, Dan. Thank you and see you in the next one.
Give the mats a shot - the low profile is not very aggressive at all, however I find a lot of ultra fine gold in more aggressive matting such as the high profile.
Just a pro tip on cutting the mats uniformly, every single time...even if you come back and have to cut extra pieces a week, month, or even years later (assuming you're still using the same exact sluice box):
cut a jig out of 1/4" or thicker ABS plastic sheeting that is the exact width of your sluice box. take your time and get it to fit exactly right, where it fits nice & snugly to prevent gaps on the sides, but loose enough that it's not a PITA to install/remove. obviously, you want to make sure the 2 sides are perfectly parallel with each other. once you have this jig fit to your liking, you can use that to lay down on top of your rubber mat and use the edge of it as a guide for your blade (clamped to the table or a cutting board, if you have a hard time keeping things straight while you cut it). just flush up one side of it with the end of the mat material, and cut along the opposite edge.
now you have a nice, easy, quick way to cut your mat to exactly the perfect width, with almost no chance of cutting any one edge at an angle, every single time. and if you cut the length of the ABS plastic long enough to go across 2 or more pieces of the rubber mat laid down side by side, you can cut through more than one mat at once. then also use it to make your cut marks for cutting the aluminum connector pieces...cut these just on the other side of your mark (to make it slightly wider than what will fit your sluice), then use a belt sander to slowly sand down the width until it fits nicely. better to cut too long than too short on these, since you can always take off a little material; you can't really add material back easily.
as an added bonus, you could add some brackets on one of the 2 sides that are not used to demarc the width of the mat, that match up to some mounting holes in the sides of the sluice box, and use the ABS plastic template itself toward the back side of the sluice as a damper to smooth out the flow of the water, if it's too turbulent. that way, the jig is always with the sluice and you don't have to worry about losing it when you need it.
I love that Manning, that's awesome that it's double-sided and that you can assemble it in any way you want. I recently purchased the gold hog stream sluice and yesterday was the first time using it, it was my first time ever using rubber matting and I think I'm in love that stuff works great I would be interested to try the gold owl matting someday as well definitely has its own benefits. Another excellent video thank you! Happy Mining 😁
Hey CaliSTI. I hope you didn't glue your GH mats together. When I got mine I wasn't sure which configuration to put them in so I just "clipped" them together. In the end it was a lot easier to clean each individual mat in a small basin than try to remove and clean out the whole lot, and I can change the config at any time. You can see it in my video ruclips.net/video/sPd54C_il9g/видео.html.
Stu JD I bought the gold hog stream sluice from gold hog so it came with two pre-made Mats that were already glued together I wish they weren't for cleanup purposes but the guys at Gold hog pretty much have the configuration down pretty good for both Mats, high flow and low-flow matting and they work very well so no complaints. But I do like that the owl Mats are double sided low flow on one side high flow on the other you only have to hiking in one mat not two that makes it pretty nice
That matting looks amazing for catching all the gold, right down to the flower stuff. Think I'll be contacting Mark soon.
I can't believe I missed this! What a excellent excellent set up!
The matting seems to work great. I like the variability of the set up. Easy assembly. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the next video.
Wow. Nice highbanker. Love that matting. Thanks for sharing your build.
Thanks. Going to do some more testing with the matting, that's for sure.
Love that matting
Thank you Dan for sharing this. And a shout out to Mark we will be coming in sometime for this. ;)
Looks like a great system. Thanks for sharing your excellent use of a 3D printer for your top piece!!
Looks good so far like the look of that aggressive mat 1 or 2 sections at the top should do it. You should throw some os those bigger pounded flat Fraser river pickers in it be interested to see where they end up . Good vid bro
That's a very good suggestion! I plan to do more testing so I'll try that - thanks!
Brother, keep shoveling dirt! You got some nice pieces there. Good hunting.
Always shovelling.
great show never boring like it!!
i like that you can easily take apart the matting. including when you clean the matting. in the video he didn't but you could make short sections to clean them easier.
Yes, I certainly could have made the sections shorter.
I really like this Owl setup. Was hoping you'd take each segment apart to see where the gold was caught and which side up the mat was that caught the different sizes of gold and of course which caught the most. Thanks for showing the simplicity of putting it all together. Cheers
I may do that on later tests. I just wasn't sure there was even gold in the material I was shovelling in this time.
The gold you captured was pretty substantial and I have to admit really surprised me. I was not expecting that much at all. It would be very interesting to see where the gold is actually captured, plus what size gold is captured where in the sluice. Thank you for taking the time to make such valuable tools for the rest of us to learn from. Cheers
I like the idea of a two sided mat. Did you double check the tailings?
I noticed some material spillage between the hopper and the sluice. Do you ever check to see if you're losing any gold? Is that a home made highbanker?
I have a Jobe 10" sluice with attached legs and flare. Needs a hopper/crash box with a hose attachment for washing down crevices. Buying them is expensive. How can I make one with basic hand tools? Was also thinking about adding a quick dredging conversion attachment too, just in case. Multifunctional.
I also have a cheap 2" water pump. How can I make an attachment to my sluice for it and what type of hose to use as a straight stream sluice? Have some fire hose too.
That's nice looking matting. I would like to try some out.
I was really impressed with it.
Thanks dan
Looks cool,like the options
Pretty clean setup. I'm excited to play with this.
Looks sweet!
Love the vid and mats...only hesitancy I have is the edges, like the hog matting where one has to use tape to keep the material from sliding out the edges... what are your thoughts on that ... love the ease of the connectivity.... thanks dan...keepbthe shiny shining...
meer Money i have newer used tape on the sides thanks to the riffles under there aint so much liftingforce of the mats and they are stopping the flow under the mats
And when i cut them i make the rubber tightfit and the alu 2mm less so it dosent get stuck
nice job good to know thanks for the info and keep them coming..
Out tomorrow to play some more.
Dan, they couldnt have found a better spokesman!
Why, thanks!
No, we couldnt have, but, we had NO INPUT what so ever into the video. We had to wait and see ourselves lol.
@@Danhurd Hey Dan, could you upload that OWL MATTING 3D printed part on Thingiverse.com ... Im getting the owl matting, thanks to you, and that would be helpful... And I'm sure others will appreciate it too ! ! !
@@silversrayleigh8980 I'll have to go and look for the file
@@Danhurd Mm! Please do :) I placed an order for those Gold Owl mats through the Facebook shop, and I'll be happy to get it ... found an aluminum supplier so I'm just making my own Highbanker after all which is what I wanted. yay .. Powered by a 3700GPH pump and 2 massive Li ion batteries :)
Very informative. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
great my friend , well done :)
Thanks!
I watched video on owl matting. Did you build the whole highbanker? Any video on that?
Love your posts, thank you.
Thanks for watching!

the matting looks good. might have to put some into a river sluice and see how it goes
Here in BC we aren't allowed to use river sluices. Darn rules.
3:45-3:46 had a neat little visitor.
I hadn't noticed until you pointed it out!
ohh the hummingbird, good eye!
If you slow down to .25 you get a good view of it.
Great video and highly informative. In your next video about sluice box matting, could you highlight the direction of the mats in the box and the science behind how the different riffles catch the gold based on shape and direction of flow? I want to build my own sluice because I found the need for it. I would love the expert advise.
The matting looks good. If you have any off cuts you don’t want, please send them my way.
Love the video and the gold owl mat. Where did you get the rubber piece for the starter.
I made it with a 3D printer
Like the owl matting, course, fine. Easy
Very easy. I really liked not having to deal with tape.
another good one Dan
Thanks!
DAN ! Im still hoping that your 3D printed piece can be shared via its .STL file ... My gold owl mats could surely use that simple way to buckle them down, just let me know if you've gone in another direction as far as securing the mats down and I'll understand... But maybe one of Santa's little helpers could hunt down that file ;) THANKS ! - Tom in Japan
You can attach a reverse riffle on one of the aluminium pieces. That will catch any nuggets. Thanks for excellent video.
I will be testing it with nuggets though I don't imagine any nugget would make it past the first riffle.
Hey Dan...
Would you recommend using an Expanded Metal set up with this matting or not...?
Thanks for sharing this information with us...!
Have a great day and may your bottom always be yellow...!
No, just the way it is - no expanded metal.
I really like the owl mat. Any idea on price? Can maybe order some through you?
Hi Dan, I was wondering how come you have the top part of your high banker at such a steep angle? Thanks
So Dan, what do you think of those little aluminum vortex generators? Do they work? When I made my wood sluice box I drilled some into it to hopefully try to add a bit more variation.
Are you asking something like the goldwell sluice?
yeah I guess that's what it is. I just drilled mine out of a piece of pine with a spade bit. (wish I would've had a forstner but my dad sold all mine)
Love that smile
Can you see my smile under my beard and moustache?
If you buy the matt does it come with extrusion or do you buy seperately?
Very cool mat. I have some of the gold hog mat. I dont like how i had to put them together. I'm really diggin your mat, looks a lot easier all the way around in comparison. What kind of price difference between the 2? I was thinkin of goin to the hog moss, but maybe not now!?
facebook.com/pg/goldstreamplacer/shop/
When I used gold hog mats the tape kept coming apart. Both really good products though.
I dont knock hog at all, but sometimes there is a better mousetrap
PartsNorthAuto oh i agree full hearted.
Dan Hurd same problem.
how do the mats clean up? Can you roll them up tight so they expand and clean out properly? Thanks :)
Yes, you can roll them tight. And yes, they clean out easily.
Cool video Dan :)
Thanks
Your Welcome
I was going for UR matting and miner moss on top, but now i am uncertain. This setup is easy to clean and to handle. In a dredge would do good a lot room for heavys and it gets get that flat gold i have trubble here holding it. Cheers
I'm not a fan of miner's moss on top of matting - it holds way too many heavies and I don't find the capture rate is any better.
Thanks Dan, decision is made. Owl mats will be cheaper since i am in EU, post cost considering and the plus is i get 2 kind of mats for a price of one ;)
Hi Dan. When I buy these mats I will mention your name. What I really like is the custom piece you had to attach the top of the mat. Is that commercially available yet? Thanks for the video!
It's just something I made myself on a 3D printer
@@Danhurd it be worthwhile selling. Looks like a fine way to mount these mats. Better than i can come up with. All I got so far is a piece of old riffle matting siliconed to the top under the box and then bolted to the first aluminum connector. I think it will work. Just more effort to remove the mats.
@@Danhurd Thanks for the reply.
man I am sold on those mats SMI in Langley BC also has them!!
They are pretty impressive
Thanks for the video. How do you think this mat would work on the Fraser?
I think it would work well. I'm certainly going to do some more testing but I'm pretty confident it would be good.
Thanks
Its great with fine gold, work very well.
I watch you pan gold in the creeks, but why don't you search for gold in the middle of the river at Pickerton ?
Its Gold Stream Placer Supply, says Gold Steam in the description lol.
Thanks for that! Once again, my editor has failed me.
Im very jealous with all that water. I have none hear in Arizona
Yeah, that's a pretty dry state - but you've got really nice gold there!
Dan Hurd yes but thanks to you and everyone else on utube for all the good free and i mean free education thanks to you all
Might be able to lower the top to make the water hit the corner more .
I have a deflector right under the grizzly and it was at a fairly low angle for this run - I should have upped it more
Fantastic
Awesome
thanks
Ten and one eight? What is that in units the world uses?
Just over 10 inches.
Approx 25.5mm
Thanks both.
just a good thing for u to know. if u keep getting eaten by gnats. eating certain foods can keep them away ie :- Garlic. tomatoes. grapefruit. lemongrass. i eat a clove of garlic and dont get bitten any more....
Thanks!
Like the matting a lot! Is it cheap?
You can check it out here facebook.com/pg/goldstreamplacer/shop/
Dan Hurd cheers but I don't do Facebook.
Ah, well their website is goldstreamplacer.com/ but it looks like FB is their go to.
You can also email us @ partsnorth@mail.com
Dan have you seen a up tick on your vids yet ...im trying to get you a little more ...just wondering
Up in comments but down in views.
I like it
Can you please shere the 3d printer file? :)
hey dan back to school yet?
Hi dan, greetings from Victoria Australia. I would like to get in contact with you on a private message, how would I be best to do this?
Isaac.
Through my Facebook page facebook.com/DanHurdGold/ - it's the best way.
I don’t know but the ripples look like they are facing the wrong direction… 🔍
Lol. he just tosses it at 9:22
Regardless of that, your videos are awesome and I'm learning a lot...
Thanks, good to hear!
Sorry now that I watched it again it is about same angle most people run theirs at. My bad. :-(
No worries.
Dan Hurd 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😃okej
Thanks!
As usual , the test showed gold that was caught how about showing the gold what got away - without showing the percentage of gold that got away then what you caught means little
Good point. just takes a lot more time to show that
Thank you for reply.
I wouldn't expect an out in the field time consuming test.
But when introducing something new , perhaps a devoted test at your home would be interesting.
Run a bucket or two.
I love what you are doing though - May God bless you and your family for your generosity.
