His 8 pack of abdominals and best standing relaxed pose alone deserved the Mr. Olympia title. Nasser is the bodybuilder who achieved the perfect balance ever of Mass and aesthetic lines. His legs could have been a bit longer..but other than that, he was a mass monster with fantastic lines.
I'm sorry but Nasser did not deserve this. Dorian won because he was the best up there that night. Was he at his all-time best? No but he was still superior to everybody on stage just like Kevin levrone and flex Wheeler said Dorian was so dominant from the front lat spread the rear backlat spread the side tricep. These were poses that he just could not be beat on anything where his back was showing it was lights out. Nobody could touch him even in '97. He was still so superior to everybody else. As far as that dry hard granite look. I'm sorry I'm not even sure NASser should have finished second

Rip Nassir, but Olympias are won from the back, and Dorian also took the side tricep, ab and thigh, and front lat spread, not a robbery, Dorian won fair and square

@@timcotter8178 His conditioning was not though or his back, them 2 things got him the win eatch time. But yates was dwindling at this point.
The front double biceps - it´s hurting me
Im a Dorian fan and he shouldn't have won this one.
He should've it is not all biceps
Just Another Guy I agree he won because of the size and freak factor his conditioning was over rated and Nassir was better and a complete BB. Dorian had flaws and he exposed more of his weaknesses but everyone ignores that.
Yeah..his physique in 1997 was not worth Olympia winning.. Nasser got royally screwed.. He is the clear winner...
Faizal Syed I couldn’t agree more and no disrespect to Dorian he was pretty good in his day but let’s be real his physique was ass that year compared to others. Some Dorian fans will say he won just because they’re fans but real fans of BB know bull shit when they see it. Like or dislike my comment I could care less Nassir got robbed.
Same. Nasir definitely was the the uncrowded Mr o. Yates got a few questionable wins.. Especially in the torn bicep days
The front double biceps is the most important pose for any bodybuilder, period. The FDB is the pose any person thinks of when they think of bodybuilding, and if you can’t nail it, you probably shouldn’t be Mr. Olympia.
Moe's Truth
Tell that to Phil Heath, Dorian Yates & Jay Cutler...
Front double is most important for showcasing symmetry, shape, and proportions. Back double is more telling for raw muscularity and conditioning.
Tomn8er I don’t even think that’s the truth, it just so happens that who ever wins Mr. Olympia also has the best back. It’s kinda like a myth that came into life. Phil, Ronnie, Dorian, and Haney were strong from the back, but also strong from the front and the back. If you took a bodybuilding contest and didn’t judge the two back poses, every result would be the same.
@@Tomn8er yeah, it's one of them poses that you can't hide any weakness, it shows what you need more work on and shows youre strengths. It's the best pose I think aswell for seeing what you have gained.
This may be the best video about 1997 Mr.O on YT. (Luimarco did a great one too)
I really appreciate your concluding thoughts. It really shouldn't matter who wins the most mandatory poses. It should also matter how the overall physique is presented. Having torn and or injured body parts by definition cant be the best physique on that stage. And I can't believe we have to even make that point.
At one time that would've been enough to keep you from winning the show. It goes to show how much standards have fallen.
Anabolic Nurse tell that to Dorian (visibly torn biceps for 4 of his 6 wins) and Ronnie (visibly torn rear left Lat for all 8 victories)...
I think the show shouldn't be determined by who wins the most mandatory poses because that person could have barely won those poses, but lost the other poses by a longshot.
byarish I’ve been saying that instead of the judges giving a straight first through last for each competitor and instead ranking each competitor for every mandatory pose for this very reason. Currently guys only get compared to other guys in the same callout, so you are correct that when someone loses by a longshot they aren’t penalized. But with this proposal to rank each mandatory pose, a guy who wins 7 poses but comes in 10th in his worst pose (17 points) would lose to someone who took 2nd in every pose (16 points). That can’t happen with the current system.
that's not how it works in a lineup, Nasser could easily win 3 poses against Yates but also lose all of those poses to the next few guys, which takes him down a peg. Yates could lose those 3 poses against Nasser but beat some other guys in those same poses. That's how a lineup works, it's not a "1v1" contest like on youtube that we are accustomed to.
In the end it evens out, Yates won 5 poses in 1997 which even if he got absolute sh%t on by Nasser in the remaining 2, Nasser himself got sh%t on in those poses. Think abs and thighs, Nasser may win it against Yates yet he loses it pretty convincingly to Levrone and Ray. Or the side chest to Levrone. Or the back poses to Ray.
Nasser himself got schooled from the back, if you think he narrowly lost the back poses then you're in denial

I was never a huge Nassar fan so this never seemed like a big injustice against him personally. It felt more like a big injustice against the field and the sport. Bodybuilding deserved a better representative in 1997.
As I was watching the video I kept mourning the fact that Paul Dillett could never get it all together. That would have been impressive.
goldburnm yes! Like 81
"I was never a huge Nassar fan so this never seemed like a big injustice against him personally." Are you crazy or narcissistic? You can't put someone at first place and someone at last place because you're not a fan. That just shows how biased you're. What you should look is who is the most completed bodybuilder, not who you're a fan of.
I agree about Paul Dillet. His asthma and posing ruined his career. He could've been a constant top 3 threat.
@@Мирич-з4е Shut Up.......
Ronnie got 9th! Next year first! This exemplifies how poor the judging was at this show
Ronnie did better and looked better in 1996 than he did in 1997.
Nasser definitely robbed. You shouldn't win with no arms and a bloated midsection. Period.
@TheLusianPopa Lmao, saying that about proper V taper legs that compliment the physique is stupid. Also, when the hell did Haney have no legs I have heard that about Arnold and Zane but not him. (I disagree with all 3) Also even if someone has subpar arms, like Cbum they can still look good in a pose because of a great v taper and shape. Dorian has neither. Arms are an attention grabber, and if you don't have them, than you sure as hell better have something else from the front to look good.
@TheLusianPopa body-mass or muscle-mass?
@TheLusianPopa Sorry, missed your reply, first of all when it comes to Dorian's arms, they are completely asymmetrical. With torn biceps and triceps to give Dorian a sort of sickly incompetence look. Dorian won the back lat spread but obviously there is a difference between a v taper for aesthetics (like Cbum) and one for width. Not to mention that the front lat spread was surprisingly close this year and could be given to Nasser based on his size. Dorian never had great biceps so the injuries make it even worse. I am a fan of Dorian but this was a huge gift of a win.
Spot on again with your judgement. If I was Yates I'd give up my Sandow and posthumously award it to Nasser!
I definitely agree Dorian's front double bicep was one of the worst.
Tim Cotter no. It was the actual worse! Whose was worse?!
Dorian is probably my all time favorite, however no matter how many times that I view this footage and others I still come back to Nasser taking this contest. Kevin absolutely should have been in there.
Great video and analysis as always. You were once again as objective as it was possible. And that case you've made in the end about politics, Fux and Coleman...so true.
However I have one thing to notice and that is Nasser's lower body conditioning from the back. I think he had an excellent hamstring, incredibly huge and it showed adequate amount of detail.
Dorian was great from the back and I give him the general conditioning over Nasser, but his flow, shape and incredible flaws all around made him having a way worse package than the poor old Professor. I always thought that Nasser was one of the most aesthetic mass monsters, even pretty aesthetic regardless of weight.
And finally: regardless of eras and preferences, the front double bicep IS the most important, iconic and defining pose in bodybuilding, no matter whether you are an amateur, pro, in the 60s, late 90s or 2010s. Every pro bodybuilder should have at least a decent front double, and everyone who has ever flexed in front of the mirror or on the beach: it was a front double 95% of the time! You just can't crown a guy whose worst pose is that.
Shows are won from the back...but that is because most pros are decent from the front so you have to make a difference from the rear.
Yeah Nasser did have well-conditioned hamstrings, maybe even better than Yates'. And LOL at that last sentence - so true!
Nasser uncrowned Mr O 1997
if shawn ray got some more height on him,
he will be unbeatable
it is not necessary, Benaziza had defeated Dorian with 5 feet 2 inch height, Olympia owner Joe Weider has bussiness of drugs and he needed mass monsters to sell his drugs. Also he got punished for false advertisement claims about his drugs. Olympia is bussiness
Clearly the best breakdown of Dorian vs Nasser hands down on all of RUclips!
Yes!! I have been waiting for this video
Pure politics , Nasser was screwed over.
Yes. Weider needs his Mr. Olympia to be representative in media, to attract investors.
Nasser with his foreign accent, critical views of a bodybuilding lobby, and competing under Yugoslavian citizenship (a country that was heavily satanized in media at those time) unfortunately had no chance, no matter how good he looked.

Nasser had him definitively.
Nassers waist was about 5 inches smaller than Dorians.
One of your best videos. So many people just give a default win to Dorian on the front lat spread without taking a more in depth look. But the FLS is about as much about the lats as the back double bicep is about the biceps. It’s still important, but the chest and shoulders probably play a bigger role in creating that look of width and thickness. And love how you brought up Ronnie and Jean-Pierre Fux getting screwed in the judging. How does one guy who is all back get 1st when another who is all back get 9th?

Hell yeah man, dope ass content a show always! I would love to see your opinion on the 1996 mr Olympia. When your top 6 is dorian, ray, Nasser, dillet, levrone, and wheeler, you know that's a damn good line up
Levrone was very underwhelming at the 1996. Mr. O. He was extremely flat and depleted, compared to his 1996 Arnold Classic physique from earlier in the year where he weighed 20 pounds more. He definitely made up for it in 1997 and 1998, coming in at over 250 pounds both years.
@@Danimal77 Completely agree. But still, I'm just talking about it based off of line up alone.
Hi everyone.
I analysed very hard the photos in the video and i deliberately put Tom8rs voice on mute as soon as the video started playing.
I did this so that I can have an objective analysis.
Nasser completely destroyed Dorian in most poses except the back where Dorian wins 1 pose.
Nasser had better muscle separation, definition and detail throughout his entire physique and he was more muscular than Dorian in all the poses except the back.
Nasser also had better balance, symmetry and proportion than Dorian.
The contest was totally rigged.
nice video Tom, wish you could upload more frequently even if they aren't 10+ minutes long.
I like what you said and I agree! No one with such glaring flaws should be winning the biggest bodybuilding show in the world no matter how many poses he wins! In 1994 on, he should have been competing in the handicap Olympia and then winning would be justifiable.
Very good video. I absolutely agree.
Sometimes we get too stuck on looking at individual parts and conditioning and stuff for a pose and struggle to pick one.. but then you remind yourself to step back and just ask "who overall just looks better in this pose?" and then it's often pretty damn obvious... that was the case for Nasser here.
I agree that someone who just overall looks like Dorian there, shouldn't place high. You can't skate by with a bad looking body overall, just because technically the criteria allows for it lol. That's terrible. They gotta start looking at the overall picture a bit more. If a guy has a giant bloated gut... like come on.. the Olympia champ should at least look good overall. And not win because technically the criteria still allows them to.
But even with the criteria the way it was/is.. he still shouldn't have won.. it still doesn't make sense.
RIP Nasser El Sonbaty Μr Olympia 1997.Great and huge guy!!!
Totally agree! No one should win with torn muscles and a huge bloated midsection. I dont care how great your back is, the body isnt 90% back. Its just a muscle group. I'd put yates at best at 4/5. At least have nasser, shawn and levrone on top with possibly lee
In 1994 quite a few people thought Shawn Ray won.
But, the defense for Dorian was that he was so much bigger and denser than Shawn, despite inferior symmetry and conditioning.
Ok, fair enough.
Fast forward to this, and we have Nasser who was at least as big as Dorian, but with superior conditioning. Dorian was even more shopworn here, with more injuries and a big gut.
STILL won.
People get the impression that if Dorian showed up with only one arm and fat rolls, the IFBB would somehow find a way to place him first.
Not hating on Dorian but come on, this was a joke.
I don't know why he retired; based off 1997 he could have been champ for another 6 years, that's how protected he was.
Dorian was bigger with better condition than Shawn.
Nasser had better condition?
He was soft and full of synthol.
Dorian wins at least 4 poses.
How many Ronnie should won?
He had a gyno and a gut for at least 7 years
Dorian is a great, but in 97 he was in bad condition.
Nasser get robed definitely...
Dillet's posing....... so bad
1:44 something we don’t see on the stage anymore. Calves!..
Even as someone who massively respects Dorian and loves the guys attitude and outlook, he shouldn’t of won this one
6:50 in the back left, the monster Jean Pierre Fux!! My fav hands down!!
Another thing here - put the top 10 up on stage. Rear lat spread - Dorian might be first & Nasser 3/4. Front double - Nasser would probably be 1/2 & Dorian 9/10. Dorian’s weak poses here were so weak that he just couldn’t place first.
How on earth did they judge Dilette? I know his posing was shit, but c'mon he can't even hold a pose for 2 fucking seconds?!?!?!?
Fux beat Yates at his own game
@Nicholas Holland Have you ever heard Fux talk about why he had these conditioning issues during his prime years? He did a really good interview about a year ago with Dave Palumbo on RxMuscle and he talked all about it. He blames it on the fact that he cut his sodium WAY too early. Like a week out..which will do it. That's why he would look like an absolute monster in his photo shoots a day or two after..or like a week out from the show. Made sense to me. He was 'taught' to do this when he was starting as a teenager by a guy in either Germany or Switzerland... when he found out that he was doing it wrong, he was in such a habit of doing it, he kept repeating it year after year. He had SO much potential. It sucks that he couldn't break that habit. He should have enlisted the help of 'The Chad...as Nichols was working with guys in the mid 90's.
I wished that nasser got mr.o because he absolutely deserved but everything was gone . Rest in peace professor . you were the real champ .
Lee Priest and Shawn Ray the giant killers..... And even after retired they still look good....💪💪
Dorian looked like garbage. The left arm and gut alone should have dropped him out of the top 6.

Everybody but Dorian Yates got robbed! The most disgracful Mr Olympia ever. Dorian is a legend but he deserved last place in 97.
Finally someone my Opinion.
Nasser got royally screwed... Holy shit.. Nasser should have been crowned in1997.. bodybuilding politics just sucks...

Bro, chose this video over nicks, well done
IFBB is full of politics and its proved over the years ... Dorain should have never accepted that 1st place ... that would have made history .. but they end up being fame hungry and never put up like a true sportsman ... Naseer was so humble and grounded even after knowing he was robbed ...
Great in depth vid Tomn8er. I wasn't into BB in 97 but this shed a ton of light on complaints I've heard out the O placing that yr. gotta admit the IFBB did knock Ronnie when he showed up in 2006 with major atrophy in his left side. Heck he shouldn't have even placed 2nd in 06 or 4 in 07! For a huge G.O.A.T. Coleman fan those 2 yr placing for him were gifted. ✌️
Dillet looks like two different people from the front and back. He's mind blowing from the front.
Dorian in 1993 set a new standard for ripped proportionate size. In 1997?? He retired after this contest, which pretty much says it all. He knew it was a lucky win, and got out before his record was tarnished. Unbeatable at his best, but that was 1 year only. In 1994 he tore his left bicep, and although he looked pretty good in 1995 and 1996, he then tore his left bicep in 1997 and that was the end.
Opps. I meant to say he tore his left TRICEP in 1997.
Why have a contest when it isn't judged properly?
7:03 Nasser clearly got robbed!
I miss the Arnold intro. :(
George Blazhev I don’t
The left arm and Yates's stomach was blocky...never should have won. I believe he was very ill for 3 weeks leading up to the contest and hadnt even trained other than cardio. I'm surprised he even competed. Don't get me wrong Yates without an injury would have won the contest fairly but this was daylight robbery! Lee Haney is the only Mr Olympia who never really had a victory that was disputed.
Excellent analysis, job well done! As much as I love Dorian, its highly debatable to say the least, whether he earned his victory in 1997. What's even more ridiculous is the fact that he won that year with perfect scores from the judges, which is utter BS.
Yes. A perfect score does not signify perfection however. Just means that the majority of the judges thought Dorian was the best. I've criticized the stupidity of this judging system in a number of other videos before.
Dorian is one of the greatest ever, but Nasser should have won this one.
Yates did not deserve to win with his injuries. To bad for all the hard work put in by the other bodybuilders.
I think Dorian and Ronnie is the top of bodybuilding, but this year Dorian should not win the title. But the "wow" factor is that Dorian even without arms can stand in the top 3...
Watching Paul Dillett is like watching a blind 90year old driving a Ferrari on a sunday afternoon.
Me personally, 1980, 1981, and 2007 don’t even COMPARE to 1997 in terms of Olympia robberies. I believe you can easily argue in favour of Arnold Franco and Jay, but even with 1993 Dorian being my favourite Olympia physique of all time, Nasser won that show decisively
love dillet but man he simply cant pose
If I was judging this competition I would have had Dorian Yates probably 5th or 6th this year. He had multiple torn muscles, a bloated stomach, and his conditioning didn't look as good a it used to. For Dorian to compete especially as a returning champ and giving him the victory on top of that is so so embarrassing and such a major offence to the sport of Bodybuilding as a whole. I'm sure that the audience members and Dorian's fellow competitors were very disappointed with the final outcome. Without a doubt Nasser El Sombaty deserved to win the 1997 Mr. Olympia plus Shawn, Levrone, and Lee Priest to beat Dorian. Instead what maybe should of happened is, the Olympia organization should have had Dorian Yates Guest posing at the 1997 Olympia and presenting the title of the 1997 Mr as crazy as that sounds. The 1997 Mr. Olympia belongs to Nasser El Sombaty.
Nasser should HAVE won, plain and simple.
Nasser appears to be the clear winner when we look at photos and screen shots from video. Perhaps Dorian seemed superior to the judges because compared to Nasser, Dorians hits poses sooner and holds them longer. Dorian might look his best in the shot for 10 seconds whereas Nasser hits it only for a few seconds. (Similar to how Big Ramy is often the first to hit poses and holds them the longest.)
Dorian also held his arms way out to the sides to give a wider appearance. Especially in the relaxed poses. Nassir should have done the same.
Merry Christmas from Ireland to you and all your family, 🎄 🎄 🎄.
Shawn Ray should've won at least 3 olympias if they rewarded shape, proportions and aesthetics but he was a beast for being two time runner up in the first mass monsters era
hahahah you're a weirdo ..aren't you? Didn't deserve to win anything.
Nasser would have literally lived longer if he had won this show like he had deserved. Such a bloody shame.
There is no way in hell Dorian should have won this show.
I rarely agree with everything you say, but 100% agreed on this one.
Great take
Anyway there can't be a mr. Olympia with a half bicep !!! That was incomplete body
From the HD comparisons Dorian wins the entire backside and I thought his front legs/quads were better along with his delts and Epic lats to give him the victory. Nasser has better arms, shoulders and midsection that's it! Chest and forearms are equal
Imagine being called the best bodybuilder in the world with upper arms smaller than your forearms!

Nasser could have done anything with with accomplishments with masters degrees and an amazing education. He loved bodybuilding more than anything. Sad he died because of the drugs he had to take to be on the top level of bodybuilding, and then being robbed this year of a trophy he completely deserved and worked his ass of for.
Is there a way the judges can be put through trial or executed?
How is it that everyone including even people who dont know much about bodybuilding can see that Nasser had the best physique apart from judges? Disgusting decision. Yates should not have even been top 5. Dreadful arms and bloated stomach.
Not really.
According to full video, Dorian had much better condition and he wins more poses than the synthol freak
Nasser Sonboty definitely got robbed
People are too hasty in their decision to declare that Nasser was robbed in in 97. They overlook the judging criteria. Dorian beat Nasser in most if the mandatory poses. Dorian lost only the front double biceps and the abs and thigh. Every other mandatory he beat Nasser in. If you look at his conditioning, posing and his immense and unbeatable back as well as his solid, granite quality muscle then you understand why he pulled ahead of him. Nasser's solo posing routine was incredibly generic and he basically just stood there. He simply doesn't have the polish, presentation and the visual quality that Dorian has. If you watch the HD video it's clear as day. If you want to see it check out _c3tv

Although i am a Yates fan, Nasser should have easily won that particular show. Unfortunately Bodybuilding is a sport whos outcome is based on opinion s rather than scores or totals, and judges always seems to have justification for their opinions no matter how odd they are
This is even worst than the 2007 mr olympia wtf are the judges smoking !?
Nasser should of won
Nice show, and I agree with . you NES got robbed. That front double biceps was devastating.
Dorian is only better on the back and has a little extra width. The calves and forearms are basically the same. Nasser destroys him in every other bodypart.
I basically agree with everything u said except the front later spread, dorians lats are so much better he wins the pose
Are they really though? They may be marginally better but Nasser is filling out the pose pretty much just as well and all the surrounding body parts are better so it's a no-brainer to me.
@@Tomn8er I guess it's about the criteria and what u think constitutes a better pose

Commenting again 😂😂 Dorian might be 1 in day the back lat spread with Nasser in 2nd or 3rd overall but say front double? Nasser might be first and Dorian is probably 15th. He just shouldn’t have won 1997 simply because he had the best back.
