The lyrics mean a lot provided they were written before the establishment, when the holocaust was going on.
Wrong the tune was written by Trad. Trad writes lot of older tunes. I really doubt Trad was someone in Italy or a group of people in Italy. TEF Edit .. wiki calls me liar but it then goes on to say that the tune moved in various incarnations all over Europe until it was adapted for the music for HaTikvah.
