- Hey guys, today I had to change my thermostat because it was giving me a code P0128 temperature below normal operating temperature. basically, my thermostat was stuck open. when I'm driving downhill, the temperature gauge would drop low and would throw a code. this is how I changed it. Hopefully it helps you guys. Thank you for watching and subscribing.

Oh men that engine looks soo clean,I like it.
Thanks. Cheers
Great video. But just so ever knows, you do not need to remove the oil filter to get to the thermostat. You just need a swivel/universal socket with 1/4 sockets. Both are small enough to fit the the tight space and can maneuver around the filter
And extensions of course
Nice looking engine block there, and great video. This was very helpful for a simple task that I nonetheless had never done before. EZPZ. Thank you! :) Subbed
Thank you. Cheers
great vid.. access is like a gift to change this part... ! thanks for the video of confidence

I spotted a slave cylinder. Looks like it’s 5-speed manual! 👍 Nice job sir!!!
Yep yep. 5spd. Very rare camry find. A keeper for sure.
Wtf really?! Never seen one myself! Keep it alive, Peter!
@@davecrupel2817 I have one.. had it 3 weeks and its a beauty
It should be a law to have easy acces to motors like in Camry
Agree 100%. Cheers
Such an easy car to work on. They cram too much in these cars now.
That's the very reason I bought my second 98 Camry.... I call the engine 'female friendly ' .... everything is easy to get to.
Peter, thank you for your video. after installing new thermostat and clearing code, i accidently put ford coolant in car. Is this an emergency and a flush is needed right away? Car ran fine and temp was great. Thanks.
Your fine. No worries. Cheers
@@PeterZafra ok, so no need to flush system then correct?
I did exactly like you said. However, after I'm running the car and turn the heat on, it over heats. It never had this over heating problem before. Even, I took the new thermostat out and then put the original one in, but still have an over heating engine. Also when I turn on the heat, only cold weather comes out. After few minutes, I see steam coming out of my radiator. PLEASE HELP!!
Did you make sure that you have radiator fluid in the radiator? Also make sure you fill the reservoir as well. You can also help by squeezing the top hose to prime the fluid.
@@PeterZafra Thank you. How do I know when to stop adding more coolant? In other words, how do I know when I've got all the air out?
Also, I saw somewhere else that the temperature of the upper hose that goes to radiator and the lower hose that comes out of radiator (the one with thermostat in it) should become similar if you have bled the air out properly. But in my car the top hose is always hot and the lower hose is cold. Did I do something wrong or its just how it should be? Thanks a lot for your help.
@@gholisholi I think we're in a similar situation...did you ever get it figured out?
I have a pipe under the intake manifold that's behind the thermostat and it's leaking water, it's about 5in. Long .
I need help. Same exact car, engine and all. Lower passenger side of my condenser has an open-end AC hose with a rigid tube fitting at the end, that goes to the compressor. It's missing a connection to something.
What line is it? what does it go to? And is the necessary part(s) available, before I can recharge the system?
Also, in terms of OEM, does Toyota even support a car this old anymore?
I'm not very familiar with AC. I would call your local Toyota dealership and give them your vin number and locate the part that way. Hope it works out. Cheers
You did everything good but I noticed he is a fram oil filter which are notorious for being full of breath you use OEM on other things you should use at least an oem on your oil filter one of the most important good luck and thanks for the info
Haha. Yup. You are right. I actually used Fram once and went oem on the oil filter. The only thing I liked about the Fram was the grip on the oil filter. Cheers
400k on one and 280k on another. The greatest car ever!
Yes. Indeed it is. I'm at 255k at the moment and still love it. Cheers
Why is my Toyota Camry SE same model, when I put water on radiator,it's being drained out 1:15
@6:25 is that small bolt to the right and above the dipstick the actual engine block drain for this motor?thx
@@zacinnc78 I'm not sure.
Hi Peter, I was curious seeing coolant stains (rust) on the engine block below the thermostat housing. Did you have a leaking freeze plug before? If so, any suggestions replacing this freeze plugs behind the water pump housing? Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks for watching. That stain isn't from coolant. It was actually from water that sat from the last engine wash.
Also, in terms of hole for thermostat, there's only one way to put it because of the shape. Also, never had a leaking freeze plug. If it does leak, you will most likely need a new gasket for the water pump. I remember the freeze plug being removed when I changed the water pump.
Thanks Peter for your speedy reply. I recently swapped engines and noticed leaking only when it’s cold and stops when at operating temperature. I’ll inspect the water pump gasket and freeze plugs, keep you posted...By the way, your Camry’s engine bay is immaculate!
My 2001 Camry engine is leaking coolant from the right side of that thing the thermostat is in- that silver pipe. Looks like a bad seal there, but I am not a car guy, though I am handy. Is replacing that seal a big deal? (ie, would I have to take apart anything more than that actual connection?) Thanks.
Check and make sure that it isn't the weep hole. It's a small circle hole at the thermostat itself. It's designed to release pressure so little small leaks from that hole is normal. But if it's leaking a lot, then you might need to change the thermostat itself depending on where the leak is exactly.
@@PeterZafra Thanks for getting back to me. It is leaking fast, 4-8 ounces a day, and from the joint on the right. Good quick video of it on my channel if the link will post... ruclips.net/video/bWCHGU-6mpA/видео.html and if not, it's at eJud2001
Thank you now I can do it myself the wires on your car are a little bit questionable but other than that good video thank you
Those are ground wires. Cheers
Bro, you need to let people know that if the jiggler isn't stright up, they may get a steam pocket behind the tstat and the car will overheat!
What do u Mean
@@towcars5550 the jiggler jiggles the air trapped behind the tstat so it can pass through. if air is trapped behind the tstat, the tstat wont open and the engine will overheat. I know this for a fact because I bought several cars with a vertical tstat that was installed incorrectly and the previous owners replaced everything trying to fix an overheating problem. Each time I simply rotated the tsat with the jiggler on top and the overheating went away.
@@fabronfretwell3257 ur right I bought a OEM worked perfectly....I bought 3 from AutoZone none of them worked
Help me! I stripped the nut while changing mine. On a 1999rav4!
I don’t know what to do. My thermo is stuck open I think cause the engine never gets warm when driving.
How can I get it off.
Check with your local auto parts store. They have tools to lend. They probably have the tool to remove the stripped bolt.
U mentioned a sensor, which sensor exactly, would we need to change? As in the name of it.
It would be the radiator temp sensor
isnt there a certain position the thermostat actually fits in housing? Im asking because i heard there is.
Yes. It can only go in one way since it has a shape that can only go on one way. You can't mess up really.
My 1999 Toyota Camry fans don't want to come on and it overheats and when I turn on the AC the fans do come on, I wasted money on new fans and those are not the problem. Do you know what's the problem?
Engine Cooling Fan Switch
Thanks mate for sharing your knowledge, I saw another video which was saying that thermostat should be placed in a way that the little hole be on up side. I don’t know if that’s right but will consider it, just in case !
Majid Ahmadpanah you will know the right way to install it because it only goes in one way. You'll see. I know you can do it. Cheers
Very Educational Thanks Alot
Cheers
I have the same car. I went with a heavy-duty thermostat from gates 180temp.
Nice video. As a FYI, it would be cool to show an inspection of the old thermostat to see what went wrong with it (broken part, valve in open position, ect).
Great idea. Next time. I do hope there's not a next time though. Cheers
Hey.i like you video.i have Toyota Co 2000 and I have 2 wires lost from the engine where they going?this long time like this.they any way I can send you pictures and you tell me where they wires going? Thanks Yoram.

Good day. I'm about getting this type of ride next week and you might have to pardon me as I'm not a DIY guy and I'm not really experienced about cars. What is the normal rpm range and what range is abnormal and what does it mean. Secondly can you explain the techniques involved in filling up the coolant i.e turning up car heater etc. I just want to learn so I can guide my mech if I ever encounter issues like this. Most mechs here don't know their onions. Tnx for the video
You couldn't pick a better car to learn with. AVOID THE 6 CYLINDER engine! far less working room.
First thing's first. Idle RPM, when the engine is up to operating temp, should be ~750 rpm. If it's slightly lower, and you have no codes, It's not a problem.
When it's cold, the rpm may go as high as 2000 rpm. Don't sweat it. It's working itself harder so it gets up to temp faster.
As for methods for filling up cooling system, he explains it in the video.
However, one thing you want to do when the coolant reservoir is full, is take the radiator cap off, put a funnel filled with coolant over it, and let the engine run with full heat. That is "burping the engine." you are getting all the air out of the system. This takes awhile. a good half hour or 45 minutes to be safe. when you stop seeing bubbles, remove the funnel and dispose of the fluid in it, put the radiator cap on, and close the reservoir. You're good to go. :)
also, MAKE SURE TO USE Toyota Red coolant if its a 96-01 camry.
I have a 2000 Toyota Camry LE and whenever I put the heat on I can smell like a smoky smell.. What is the cause of it?
Kasinova Da Don I'm not sure. Have you checked your cabin filter? It might be old. I know the LE model comes with a cabin filter.
Kasinova Da Don a smoke smell might be your vents getting it from the outside. Check if it still smells like it when you close the vents. Cheers
Leak in your exhaust, fan is pulling it in.
son's 2001 camry 4cyl engine was overheating. Outside auto parts store, a guy looked at it and pointed out a nice 3-5 inch crack in the plastic head of the radiator. I replaced radiator. Problem is that during the "get it back to operating temp & let the thermostat open up phase," I never saw either of the 2 fans kick on, nor did I see the fluid drop for the "continue filling after the thermostat opens back up." So while I can feel good about my first radiator replacement, I'm thinking a mechanic needs to diagnose whether there's another underlying problem, ie electrical or thermostat. I don't want another issue to ruin / crack the new radiator, Any suggestions?
You need to turn on the heater whilr the engine is running so the fluid can circulate properly. Also, keep an eye on the temperature because the thermostat sometimes takes a while to open if there's not enough fluid. I usually squeeze the upper hose to prime the fluid when flushing the radiator fluid. But yes, do turn on the heater while the engine is running to circulate fluid
By the way, is it still over heating? Feel both hoses upper and lower. If only one is hot after engine been running for a few minutes, the thermostat is closed. Let me know how it goes.
Great it help out alot thak you..
Cheers
I have a 98 Camry and my car is overheating , there is smoke coming out of the reservoir tank and the coolant bubbles / boils . Anyone know what could be the issue ?
Might be a bad thermostat. When engine cools down, make sure you have enough coolant as well
@@PeterZafra ok thank you 🙏🏾
Thanks for your nice and helpful descriptions, but I have been seen that you have an additional wiring for ground in this lovely car, I have 2001 xli. If it possible could you talk about the grounding and additional wiring for it and how it could be more efficient to the electrical system.
rororara20 thanks for watching. The additional ground helped stabilize the car in general. The lights especially.
Peter Zafra thank you so much, i asked you because i am going do ground to my car, so i will go ahead.
Excellent!
Thanks!👍

If it's a bad thermostat will it over heat
It depends. Highly unlikely because most of the time, it stuck open when faulty but there's still a possibility. It will throw a code though.
@@PeterZafra forsure yes my mr2 5sfe over heats
Can I still drive it in til I get done ???? Asap
Unless it's overheating then it should be okay. I drove mine at least 2500 miles before changing it. just keep getting error codes.
Peter, do you have a video on your engine washing procedure?
Yes. Peter zafra easy engine wash
Peter Zafra thank you sir!!! I have a 97 Celica GT with the same engine/transmission setup.

You do good videos I would add that you should still say what the proper Toyota spec for torque is that way us people that are going to do the job don't have to try to look it up

For what it's worth several years later, the spec I've found is 82 in/oz which is around 6.8 ft/lb.
No glue or gasket ?
No
I think you should add a few more grounds

I actually changed the oil same time. Lol
Why is no abs?

Mine runs to cold so i assume its the thermostat
It could be that it's staying open. Or you may have a lower temp thermostat. If it runs good, not I high rpm and not over heating, I say it's good.
So you use Toyota OEM thermostat but go with a Fram oil filter. 😆 Toyota oil filter is far superior and about a dollar more.
Yup. I used to use non oem parts all the time. I'm 100% full oem now including oil filter. I was raised seeing fram so fram it was until i found out what the insides looked like in someone elses RUclips video. You live and learn as you go. That's the beauty of life. Thank you for watching. Cheers

My car temperature looks normal but it's so cold out and when I'm driving on the highway at 65mph I lose almost all heat. But in town I have heat.
Make sure you bleed out all the air from the system. Check reservoir that it's not empty.
