I grew up on a ranch that had angus, Hereford, and primarily cross cattle. Loved those days of going out with my Dad to check on and care for them and wished my kids could have had the farm experience. Your explanation of things was very interesting and helpful and it brought back nice memories. You’re clearly a smart rancher. I pray all ranchers like you can continue on strong as an important part of our economy and culture. I’m also an unapologetic beef eater.

Thanks Ardurbin yes “Black Baldies” is a pretty common way to refer to black/pure white face cattle. “Brockle Face” are the ones with mostly white faces that also have spots or other markings. That’s how I was taught anyway! Thanks for watching!

First time listener, first time caller 😄. Love what you're doing. Especially you're humility with regards to what you know alot about and what you're trying for the first time. We're in So. Illinios and have a farm very much like yours. One Gpa was a Hereford guy, other Gpa Angus. Both got into crossing in 1980s. BWF and Sim Angus. To be odd I got into Charlais/Romagnola cross in early 2000s before selling to travel for work. Now 50/50 blk SimAngus using 50/50 blk Simangus composite bulls. Sure miss red Hereford but trying to make farm work vs running it with my lunch bucket (got a reg job). Heterosis, CE, and Docility are the traits we are selecting for the most as we too are building females for the future. Keep up the hard work and remember: Our childhood was filled with "you can live your dream blah blah blah" statements but who knew the real dream was filling our ancestors shoes and not filling moon boots. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Good luck buddy.

And my cousin is one of the leading ET guys here in the Midwest. I'm proof you can be stupid but merely hang around smart people and pick up things here and there. Look into Calpastatin and genetic markers for feed efficiency in beef cattle. To quote my neighbor " I don't know how but efficiency wins in the end. In every other industry efficiency wins. Beef is going there." You might like that stuff as well.

I'm glad that you have done a video on this. Trying to explain pure breed versus crossbred cattle or pigs or anything else for that matter as far as livestock. I have tried to explain this to people for years and they give me the weirdest bewildered look when I try to tell them it's pretty much inbreeding. Now I have a reference to send someone to I'll just tell them to watch this video LOL maybe they'll take your word for it instead of mine. Again great video and have a great day

I am also crossing a Red Angus bull with Normando/ Holsteins, Simmental and Jersey crosses which are the must commun breeds available at commercial levels. I like to see what I am going to have at the end.
Beautiful cattle....Mine are the same... predominately Black Angus but mixed with Hereford... have white spots under the arms, few white faces....So i'll call mine "Angus Hybrid Vigor". I never like pure bred inbreeding....weakens the genes and the cattle's ability to reproduce and survive. Why my Angus Vigors ..i swear i have two the are so sensitive and psychic...they know when i'm coming down the road...they see me before i can spot them looking at me. Cows are smart, they have incredible ways to communicate with each other. My cattle jump for joy when they see me....maybe part of it is feed and treats....but I've been adopted into their herd.
Good info. My little herd consist of Black Angus/Limo/Beefmaster mix. Bred to Black Angus bull every year. The herd and weather looks good. It's rained so much here my rain gauge is under water.😀
Sounds like a good cross. I have heard of them, but never actually seen a Beefmaster, how do you like them? Things are just starting to think about drying out here and now I see more rain is coming. But hey at least I can still see my rain gauge!
@@farmertylerranch4399 I had the Beefmasters bout 8 or 10 years ago. The red cows that I have now are left over from then. They're a mix of Beef/Limo/Angus--20/40/40 to the best of my figuring. The only bad part about Beefmasters are they are a "loose hide" breed. Sometimes they "blow-out" (a nice term) when calving.
Excellent explanation on crossbred vs purebred. I completely agree about hybrid vigour - for us, we experience it in goats and dogs, not cattle, lol, but the same applies with those too. I hadn’t realized they now have a docility scale for bulls though, and thats terrific news - love that I can still learn something new every day! Let’s face it...there’s not much that’s more dangerous for a farmer than a big, aggressive bull who’s decided all humans are a threat. (Except perhaps accidentally walking up on an overly protective cow with a slightly early arriving newborn. Don’t ask. Let’s just say I learned just how fast I could run that day and leave it there, lol. 🤦🏻♀️) We only run a couple of grass-fed yearling steers each season for slaughter in the fall but much like you, we prefer the Hereford/Black angus cross (we buy our steers off a friend of ours). They’re always really healthy, self-sufficient and produce excellent meat. We occasionally have serious issues with a coyote population explosion up here in West-Central Alberta (seems to hit about every 7 - 9 years or so) and we’ve personally found this cross to be the best able to stand their ground against them, but still be docile enough to be safe around humans. We’ve tried several different breeds and cross breedings through the years but this is the one that works the best for us. Hubby and I are really enjoying your videos! Definitely happy to subscribe 😊

Very interesting because I raise some cattle an just finished watching a video on highest weight gain breeds of cattle and black Angus was number six of the ten highest weight gain breeds .

Great explanations! Hybrid vigor can work with crossing plants, too. I even feel like our sons have the best traits of me and my wife! How would you suggest we go about starting a simple operation to raise beef for ourselves? (buy a pregnant cow, buy a mother and her calf, buy a young calf, etc.)

I think you would be wise to start with buying a bottle calf or a young steer to finish out and eat. That way it’s a minimal investment and you can see how you like it. The tough thing with a small herd is getting the cows bred. Usually it’s not economical to buy a bull with less than 10 or so cows and artificial insemination doesn’t always take the first time, if you can even find someone to do it. I’d say start out with a calf and see where it goes. Good luck!

No problem BTO. What you’re doing there is actually a very smart strategy. Red Bull’s are usually a lot cheaper than black ones and if he’s on black cows there is a 50-75% chance the calves will still be black anyway. Thanks for the comment and don’t sweat being late!!
I agree that the Angus breed organization has done a better job of promotion than the other breed organizations. In my experience, the Herefords are a more calm and much less excitable breed than the Angus. I've been out of the business for a long time, so that may have changed.
David Avid we stopped using hereford bulls about 10 years ago because they were to lazy to stay with the cows, we would find them buddied up in a corner of the pasture no where near the cows and after we had around 80 open cows from the hereford bulls pasture we said enough is enough, now I know people that still use them and have not had any issues but we sure did and not just one year either,
@@farmertylerranch4399 I switched to balancer bulls or gelbvieh cross and I'll never go back the calves hit the ground stand up and are moving with there mom before they are even dried off good gentle easy working I have had great luck since the switch and I added a little wean weight
For those intending to go to the UK, we pronounce it like hair-eh-Ford, not her-furd . I mean they're your cows, you call 'em what you want, but the English county is Herefordshire and like most English place-names it's _not_ pronounced as it is spelt.
William, haaaaa haaaa, that's a good point. My g grandfather was named William. His parents came to the USA from near Maidstone, Kent County in 1870. They settled on Bristol Road in Clayton Township, Genesee County Michigan. They made a lot of money. Our family raised Hereford and Angus. We kept 2 different herds. Now we know why so many have mostly black cows. I kinda want some. I know a man that has like over a 100 and his are like yours mostly black but he told me a black cow with a white face was a good looking cow and would bring good money at the Sale. Good stuff to know!

Nice video. Dad and I grew registered Angus cattle and they were growers. Did you hear about the bull that sold on the 9th for 1,510,000?? That was for 80% semen rights and no possession. Scoff Angus Valley is the breeder of the bull. Just thought I let you know.
We raised black angus. Yes that was crazy. Go Google it as the auctioneer didn't stop the first time till he was at 1.3 million. Have a great week and look forward to next video.

Now they have registered black Hereford cattle. Back to the pie bald cattle my grandfather raised. A lot of people in my area were running Angus/Hereford cross. Everyone called them pie bald. Now Hereford trying to get into the black hide market offers you that now. I'm amazed how many breeds of cattle developed black hides cattle for their breed. Just because the consumer sees Angus with ALL black skinned cattle. It's a crazy world where the meat taste better because the skin was black. That's OK I'll laugh to the bank and love ignorant people while trying to make ends meet as a small family farm 318 acres. Thank God for leased acreage.
Yeah I saw something about black Herefords in a magazine awhile ago. It’s funny how people think black hided cattle taste better! Honestly it’s a testament to the fantastic job the black angus association has done marketing their product. But hey if that’s what they want that’s what we’ll give them, thanks Keith!
If I remember right Beefmaster is a composite breed made up of what? I don’t really know much about them, what is their best trait besides hybrid vigor? Thanks g velfarms!
@@farmertylerranch4399 they were developed from Hereford, Shorthorn and Brahman. They developed the breed on 6 essential traits, disposition, fertility, weight, confirmation, milk production and hardiness.
Yep, Beefmaster is a very good breed, small birth weight, high weening weight and heifers/cows are good milkers. I put Beefmaster bulls on Simmental cows with great results. And like you stated very little if any ear. I worked with a Beefmaster breeder in Northern Arizona and also found they were great disposition and easy to work.
Hello, I really enjoy watching your channel. I am just getting started with my herd and find a lot of your information very helpful. I have 1 black angus and 2 red angus heifers. We are hoping to have calves this year. But I had a question, do you ever hear your cows cough? I have noticed from time to time I will hear them cough. I am having a hard time getting a vet to come out. I keep getting told that my herd is to small. Would you have any suggestions on what to do for them? Currently they are due to calve in March/April of 2021. I just want to make sure they are in the best health possible. Thanks in advance.
An occasional cough is normal. If they are coughing a lot there could be respiratory issues but it doesn’t sound to me like that’s what is going on. Are they in a dusty environment or eating dusty hay? That can make them cough and sometimes lead to other problems. There is a vaccine for respiratory diseases you could start giving, other than that make sure they have access to a good mineral supplement (they will eat what they need, “self regulate” so to speak) and good quality feed and they ought to do fine.
You've use a very hearty variety of breeds there. Longhorns can't stand the very cold weather but those white face will ; they're also very skittish and aggressive. Bramah are big active aggressive breed. Grow hearty cattle for your region. I like Angus bred to white face. Heavy beef cold/hot tolerent friendlier breed.
Great video. I’m curious how coloring and lineage play into your decisions on which heifers to keep for breeding vs which ones go for beef? I know there are certainly other very important factors too.
Thank you Fern Forest! In my operation, it’s nothing fancy or complicated. If I like a cow, I try to keep her daughters. In fact I can think of two examples out there where I’ve got three generations from a cow I liked. Coloring is more just about what’s pleasing or unique to look at but it also helps with cow identification at a glance. Thanks for the question!
OT.. Tyler, you mentioned having a degree in Ag Science. Have you ever thought about getting your Masters, and teaching the same? I think you’d make an EXCELLENT high school Ag/FFA teacher!

I sold some Holstein steers once in Minnesota and they cut this one steer out of the herd and said it would bring more money sold as Angus. But it was a Holstein. They said it just had to be 80% black and no white above or below the hocks. Black Angus it is then.
Haha yeah I’ve heard something like that before. That “Certified Angus” basically just means it was an 80% black hided animal, regardless of breed. Almost like they can charge more for that labeling or something! Thanks Phil
Tyler we breed a Black Angus to our Hereford cows but none are pure Black Angus, or Black Baldies to a Hereford in the past always liked how they took care of themselves for they will look for grass on their own. A pure Black Angus will walk through a fence for we hard time keeping them in but went to a mix they stayed in the pasture.

Problem I have with black Angus is any cattle that's been bred by a black Angus bull as long as the hide is 75% black its considered a black Angus... So you take a Jersey or holstein or any dairy breed and as long as you have a black hide you get a premium for Angus even though it's a dairy breed. I've heard people commenting on Angus vs. Hereford saying Herefords meat taste better. Hide is also thicker. Reason herefords fell behind Angus is because they had a falling out over horned vs. Polled. But also have heard Angus + Hereford together is also very tastey. But I believe herefords are way more docile then Angus are

Let’s face it...there’s not much that’s more dangerous for a farmer than a big, aggressive bull who’s decided all humans are a threat.
(Except perhaps accidentally walking up on an overly protective cow with a slightly early arriving newborn. Don’t ask. Let’s just say I learned just how fast I could run that day and leave it there, lol. 🤦🏻♀️)
We only run a couple of grass-fed yearling steers each season for slaughter in the fall but much like you, we prefer the Hereford/Black angus cross (we buy our steers off a friend of ours). They’re always really healthy, self-sufficient and produce excellent meat. We occasionally have serious issues with a coyote population explosion up here in West-Central Alberta (seems to hit about every 7 - 9 years or so) and we’ve personally found this cross to be the best able to stand their ground against them, but still be docile enough to be safe around humans. We’ve tried several different breeds and cross breedings through the years but this is the one that works the best for us.

How would you suggest we go about starting a simple operation to raise beef for ourselves? (buy a pregnant cow, buy a mother and her calf, buy a young calf, etc.)

@@farmertylerranch4399 Thanks for the quick reply. For now, only for us, fam of 5. Live on about 12 acres with small pond and several trees interspersed. Might like to sell calves after raising our own once or twice.
I think you would be wise to start with buying a bottle calf or a young steer to finish out and eat. That way it’s a minimal investment and you can see how you like it. The tough thing with a small herd is getting the cows bred. Usually it’s not economical to buy a bull with less than 10 or so cows and artificial insemination doesn’t always take the first time, if you can even find someone to do it. I’d say start out with a calf and see where it goes. Good luck!

No problem BTO. What you’re doing there is actually a very smart strategy. Red Bull’s are usually a lot cheaper than black ones and if he’s on black cows there is a 50-75% chance the calves will still be black anyway. Thanks for the comment and don’t sweat being late!!

I agree that the Angus breed organization has done a better job of promotion than the other breed organizations. In my experience, the Herefords are a more calm and much less excitable breed than the Angus. I've been out of the business for a long time, so that may have changed.

David Avid we stopped using hereford bulls about 10 years ago because they were to lazy to stay with the cows, we would find them buddied up in a corner of the pasture no where near the cows and after we had around 80 open cows from the hereford bulls pasture we said enough is enough, now I know people that still use them and have not had any issues but we sure did and not just one year either,
@@farmertylerranch4399 I switched to balancer bulls or gelbvieh cross and I'll never go back the calves hit the ground stand up and are moving with there mom before they are even dried off good gentle easy working I have had great luck since the switch and I added a little wean weight

For those intending to go to the UK, we pronounce it like hair-eh-Ford, not her-furd . I mean they're your cows, you call 'em what you want, but the English county is Herefordshire and like most English place-names it's _not_ pronounced as it is spelt.

They settled on Bristol Road in Clayton Township, Genesee County Michigan. They made a lot of money. Our family raised Hereford and Angus. We kept 2 different herds. I have been told by farmer rancher that the black white face are black hided then you got the hybrid vigor plus you don’t get docked at the sale barn.

Now they have registered black Hereford cattle. Back to the pie bald cattle my grandfather raised. A lot of people in my area were running Angus/Hereford cross. Everyone called them pie bald. Now Hereford trying to get into the black hide market offers you that now. I'm amazed how many breeds of cattle developed black hides cattle for their breed. Just because the consumer sees Angus with ALL black skinned cattle. It's a crazy world where the meat taste better because the skin was black. That's OK I'll laugh to the bank and love ignorant people while trying to make ends meet as a small family farm 318 acres. Thank God for leased acreage.
Yeah I saw something about black Herefords in a magazine awhile ago. It’s funny how people think black hided cattle taste better! Honestly it’s a testament to the fantastic job the black angus association has done marketing their product. But hey if that’s what they want that’s what we’ll give them, thanks Keith!
Tyler think about trying a Beefmaster on those Black cows the calves will have have more hybrid vigor than other breeds and the ear will be minimal.
If I remember right Beefmaster is a composite breed made up of what? I don’t really know much about them, what is their best trait besides hybrid vigor? Thanks g velfarms!
@@farmertylerranch4399 they were developed from Hereford, Shorthorn and Brahman. They developed the breed on 6 essential traits, disposition, fertility, weight, confirmation, milk production and hardiness.

Yep, Beefmaster is a very good breed, small birth weight, high weening weight and heifers/cows are good milkers. I put Beefmaster bulls on Simmental cows with great results. And like you stated very little if any ear. I worked with a Beefmaster breeder in Northern Arizona and also found they were great disposition and easy to work.

Hello, I really enjoy watching your channel. I am just getting started with my herd and find a lot of your information very helpful. I have 1 black angus and 2 red angus heifers. We are hoping to have calves this year. But I had a question, do you ever hear your cows cough? I have noticed from time to time I will hear them cough. I am having a hard time getting a vet to come out. I keep getting told that my herd is to small. Would you have any suggestions on what to do for them? Currently they are due to calve in March/April of 2021. I just want to make sure they are in the best health possible. Thanks in advance.
An occasional cough is normal. If they are coughing a lot there could be respiratory issues but it doesn’t sound to me like that’s what is going on. Are they in a dusty environment or eating dusty hay? That can make them cough and sometimes lead to other problems. There is a vaccine for respiratory diseases you could start giving, other than that make sure they have access to a good mineral supplement (they will eat what they need, “self regulate” so to speak) and good quality feed and they ought to do fine.

Nothing beats using Hereford bulls
You've use a very hearty variety of breeds there. Longhorns can't stand the very cold weather but those white face will ; they're also very skittish and aggressive. Bramah are big active aggressive breed. Grow hearty cattle for your region. I like Angus bred to white face. Heavy beef cold/hot tolerent friendlier breed.

Great video. I’m curious how coloring and lineage play into your decisions on which heifers to keep for breeding vs which ones go for beef? I know there are certainly other very important factors too.
Thank you Fern Forest! In my operation, it’s nothing fancy or complicated. If I like a cow, I try to keep her daughters. In fact I can think of two examples out there where I’ve got three generations from a cow I liked. Coloring is more just about what’s pleasing or unique to look at but it also helps with cow identification at a glance. Thanks for the question!
OT.. Tyler, you mentioned having a degree in Ag Science. Have you ever thought about getting your Masters, and teaching the same? I think you’d make an EXCELLENT high school Ag/FFA teacher!

I sold some Holstein steers once in Minnesota and they cut this one steer out of the herd and said it would bring more money sold as Angus. But it was a Holstein. They said it just had to be 80% black and no white above or below the hocks. Black Angus it is then.
Haha yeah I’ve heard something like that before. That “Certified Angus” basically just means it was an 80% black hided animal, regardless of breed. Almost like they can charge more for that labeling or something! Thanks Phil
Tyler we breed a Black Angus to our Hereford cows but none are pure Black Angus, or Black Baldies to a Hereford in the past always liked how they took care of themselves for they will look for grass on their own. A pure Black Angus will walk through a fence for we hard time keeping them in but went to a mix they stayed in the pasture.

Our holsteins who got bred the first time were bred to herfords or angus for the ease of birth.
Problem I have with black Angus is any cattle that's been bred by a black Angus bull as long as the hide is 75% black its considered a black Angus... So you take a Jersey or holstein or any dairy breed and as long as you have a black hide you get a premium for Angus even though it's a dairy breed. I've heard people commenting on Angus vs. Hereford saying Herefords meat taste better. Hide is also thicker. Reason herefords fell behind Angus is because they had a falling out over horned vs. Polled. But also have heard Angus + Hereford together is also very tastey. But I believe herefords are way more docile then Angus are
