  • More often, brick streets are being covered up with asphalt. But some are fighting to preserve them.

I have a question you don't see brick roads getting potholes and getting cracks and they don't have to be repaired every damn year why we just replace the asphalt and bring back brick

There's a few reasons, the two biggest are traffic engineers in most cities are a bit old fashioned in thinking and dislike the reduced avg speeds with brick streets and second is that cities in the US often still have issues prioritizing short term costs over lifetime cost. In the US because we don't regularly build brick streets the upfront costs can be as much as 50-100% higher than asphalt. As the economies of scale increase that price would drop.

In the Netherlands they lay the bricks with a machine. And the water has a place to go instead of flooding the neighborhood.

Much longer, most brick roads that are around are 75 to 100 years old. The weather and lighter vehicles don't cause as much damage compared to asphalt, which require oil-based material and constant maintenance. Paying for brick vs asphalt is like paying monthly vs annually.

It's probably better as long as it's not used for heavy trucks.
In Europe they're used in pedestrian sections where there's no cars allowed.

@@dab0331 not really true, they also get used for cars, bikes, and pedestrians.

Can last almost forever, although the brick and cobble streets over 200+ years old in Europe most people try to avoid as the ride quality gets a bit annoying when they are that old.
