Lynx Air - 737 MAX 8 - Calgary (YYC) to Vancouver (YVR) | TRIP REPORT

- I flew on Canada's newest low-cost carrier from Calgary to Vancouver on its inaugural flight in April 2022. Lynx Air offers a no-frills experience with some of Canada's cheapest airfare prices, which has historically been needed to compete with Air Canada and WestJet's unchecked monopoly.
Lynx Air currently has 9 aircraft (all Boeing 737 MAX-8), with plans to order 38 more over the next few years. Although having just one class of service helps keep operating costs down for the airline, lacking any buy-on-board menu is disappointing, especially for Lynx's longer flights such as Vancouver-Orlando or Toronto-San Francisco.
UPDATE
As of February 22, Lynx Air is filing for bankruptcy and will be shutting down, blaming rising costs, unfavorable exchange rates, and competitive tension for its demise. For me personally, I believe Lynx had poor leadership, weak brand identity, and unprofitable routes with tickets actually priced too cheap. But this marks the turning point in Canada's low-cost airline market to a point of no return. Canada's failure of a Federal Competition Bureau enables Air Canada (and somewhat WestJet) to own a monopoly on the entire country's air travel. Ticket prices have always been very high, and Air Canada gets away with ripping off travelers while offering a cheap product. Every time a low-cost carrier tries to make it in Canada, it usually fails rather quickly. And now in 2024, with Flair Airlines drowning in financial woes, Swoop's recent shutdown, Sunwing being dissolved into its acquirer WestJet, Canada Jetlines struggling to expand, and WestJet's rising prices, it has turned Canada's hopes at keeping a low-cost airline pretty dim. It's a shame the government enables this to happen.

As of February 22, Lynx Air is filing for bankruptcy and will be shutting down, blaming rising costs, unfavorable exchange rates, and competitive tension for its demise. I had edited this video recently, completely unaware of the news coming.
I agree with your statement. I honestly think Lynx Air would've been better if they had better leadership.
lol you posted the video after they shutdown LMAO.
@@idxluaviation They shut down on the 25th.
@@Dinson001 I agree with it. Lynx and Flair are certainly failing thanks in part to government not doing anything. They were even one of the last governments to supply aid to airlines during COVID. These guys don’t care about this stuff. Plus government still owns about 6% of AC so make your own conclusions about that & what it has to do with competition… Better management would help but not for long.
Another factor, IMO, is going with the MAX as their fleet type. And I’m saying this in terms of fleet/acquisition costs. Perhaps having a cheaper fleet of NG (or even classic) 737’s would’ve been better.
Whats up Quintin! Posting the inaugural 2 years later is crazyyyy
😂 Better late than never! It’s bittersweet to see the optimism for Lynx knowing what eventually happened though
@@QFSAviation I never flew lynx… but your trip report has shown that I wouldn’t be missing much… the ultra low cost carrier really brought nothing new to the table
Sad to see Lynx ending operations now
Great video! Love the stickers! And the scenery was beautiful! I remember this day especially your news interview. Well done Quebec Foxtrot Sierra and thanks for sharing!
Thank you!!! 🙏 CTV interviewing me was pretty cool!!
@@QFSAviation yes sir!!
Best footage and best music as usual 🤩👍
Very nice takeoff! Thx
What's up Quintin. Nice to see you post a video of an inaugural flight nearly 2 years later. Hope to see you post more content a little bit more often, just like what you used to do prior to the COVID-19 pandemic!
Congrats on riding the Inaugural Lynx flight Calgary to Vancouver.
I agree that alacarte menu should be offered. The Canadian Rockies are spectacular.
Thanks Quintin👍💚
Lynx Air
2022 - 2024
Rest in peace 🕊️
This Airline is going to Remembered by those Travelers who flew on it ❤️
Thanks for posting! Sad news but it was fun while it lasted.
Well Rest in Peace Lynx air we’re miss you ❤
Thanks QFS!
Awesome flight very very nice.
That was sure spectacular when you were interviewed by the news channel & watching the foundation press & CEO give an address. The Canadian Rockies are sure spectacular. I live in the Montana Rockies.
Lots of known faces on this flight Q! Thanks for sharing!
Hope you've start switching your asset to the era of financial system?
@@DeplorableDee I am thinking about that! The problem is that I have no assets - au contraire, I owe a lot of money to the bank🤣. I think I'm going to be swallowed by the Quantum Finance System!
That was an exciting day for sure and glad I got to take part in it. Certainly a shame to see them go out of business but can’t say I am super surprised. Only surprise to me is that Flair out lasted them. Had always assumed the indgo partners backing would have helped them to weather better than Flair with there outwardly present financial troubles. That leaves flair as Canada’s only true ULCC so wish them the best of success but would be lying if I said I thought there future is any brighter.
memorable flight.
Hey my friend how's it going keep up the good work....the dread from Montreal
What a way to say farewell
True! totally agree with your Updated Comment. So many low cost airlines did not survived and mostly short-lived. Even defunct Harmony Airways, a leisure airline from Vancouver to Hawaii did not last long enough.
Farewell Dauntless. was lovely to be on the inagural too shame things didn't work out
Nice video! I wanted to fly on them but since I wasn't in Canada, I didn't get the chance. Probably glad I didn't try to fly with them.
Nothing like the Air Canada 🇨🇦 flight from Florida.
It’s a shame Lynx have gone under but agree it only seems Canadian government only cares about Air Canada, Air Transat and Westjet. Having no food or drinks onboard was a big mistake, having no IFE not really an issue especially for short flights like this and seats didn’t look that great tbh it’s a shame and I can see Flair going the same way as well.
Pity really.
And of course this video has to be with Emil.
rip Lynx Air!!!
Now this airline is shutting operations😞
Those Lynx sunglasses will go for a lot on eBay
“In the next 5-7 years”😢
over a year later and air travel is more expensive than ever within Canada.
So this just leaves Canada with Air Canada, WestJet, and Porter?
Flair and Air Transat (Quebec) are still around. But Flair is likely going to collapse this year with their awful financial situation.
No Anthony here!!!
No worries it's gone unfortunately as of Monday 0001am
How many US Av Geeks were on this flight???
😀👍
Hope you're aware of ongoing bank crash and economy downfall
how bitter sweet?... Low cost model just won't work in this country... Too big, too few passengers, two major airlines... Love your videos tho!
Hard to say something to this airline: RIP

"...people know what to expect when they come onboard a Lynx plane! There are no surprises!" That is, of course, until you decided to shut down the whole damn operation and then refused to refund folks money for seats that had already been paid for and suggest that they contact their bank/credit card company for refunds. I remember having to go through this ordeal many years ago when Tower Air collapsed as I had purchased a roundtrip ticket for my mother to travel from JFK->LAX to visit me while I was in graduate school. Thankfully, I was able to make another reservation out of LGA->MDW->LAX on ATA.
Too bad they filed bankruptcy
Bye bye Lynx
That didnt age well. Lol.
Hope you've start switching your asset to the era of financial system?
