I learned to sail on the Hudson and NY Harbor, out of Lower Manhattan. I was just sailing there today! We race there too. It's intense. Lot's of traffic, wind shifts, and currents, but you get used to it. I've seen quite a few people get their asses kicked in Hell Gate. Good job timing the tide and current (and not hitting the bridge)!
You got lucky on the lady liberty anchorage. When we stayed there, we rolled from rail to rail for hours, and the helicopter noise was horendous. It was definitely a one time thing for us. 😂
Pure nostalgia. In 1986 we sailed from Annapolis to NYC for the relighting of Lady Liberty. Then on to Newport etc. etc.. NY harbor was filled with US Navy, Tall Ships, and thousands of pleasure craft. Regan flipped the switch and the torch lit up, and we hauled anchor to sail the south side of Long Island to Montauk Point. We get too fascinated with the tropics when we have some really great cruising here at home. Did you have “steamers” in Atlantic Highlands?
22:04 Yeah as i approach the locks tugs and barges lined the bank's for1/2 mile turns out the locks had been closed due to flooding. The lock master sent me through OMG I'm steering for the opening on the opposite side very quickly I'm pointing down river and had lost 100 feet down river I get her pointed upriver full throttle making very little headway and if I got impatient and turned towards the cut on the far bank I would loose a lot of ground . I was scared . The barges would have to start a twist before exiting the channel and into the river which was not easy given the narrow exit . With the barge pointing upriver upon exiting the river they would have to let the head fall off and crash into the bulkhead and force the rest of the barges and tow through. Shortly after we exited the area we heard a pon pon that several barges were floating free down river
hell gate isnt that bad if you come back this way go up the hudson and check out croton bay or go furthe up to west point good marinas MYC with deep water

We just came through the East River a week ago. The other direction! Fun trip!
Seeing NY via water ways is so Cool!
Yes, it is!

We have just enough wind to keep the roll down.

@@johnlatimer72 so true about the tropics. We're in love with the northern US East Coast.
Did it a couple years ago, incredible but totally get the nerve wracking part. It’s not a standard day on the water for sure!
Great job, Captain!
Looking forward to seeing this episode later today. After Debbie finishes slamming my house.
@@MadMarv. Stay dry!
We so what to do this !
Nice job. A perfect review for next year, when I duplicate your steps north from my home port of Reedville in the Chesapeake Bay.
Sounds great! Thx for watching
