You forgot to mention in Sinnoh a very important flaw which was the limited pokedex and lack of versatility and diversity among the types. More than half are from previous generations and you don't get the expanded pokedex until post game.

@@vertisyvengeful4254 1. I don't and probably won't own a Switch, so I know nothing of this, and 2. And even if that's the case, the fact that you'd have to pay extra for it rather than have it baseline in the game that shipped is not at all worth full credit.
I wish they were given more development time. I think they could make some truly great games if they were spaced out better. Like, don't get me wrong I still love Pokemon and I had a lot of fun with gen 8, but I really love exploration in my games and the routes were way too limited in this game. One town was basically just one long hallway and it was sad. It just reeks of rushed development.
Flash stopped being mandatory and had its accuracy buffed so it became more of a possiblle convenience than a mandatory move. Plus, if you're capable of remembering layouts, you don't even need Flash whereas Defog literally removes a weather condition that affects everyone's accuracy.
I'm currently creating concepts for a fakemon region (called Oinnrach, based off of the rest of the UK that didnt really get representation) and difficulty is one of the biggest things I've thought about! So far, the settings are "Easy" with the exp share always on and slightly lower level enemies, "Regular" with the exp share, but it works under old school rules of only that pokemon holding it has a cut of the xp, and the enemies are regularly leveled, "Hard" where the xp share is completely cut, and the enemies are slightly higher leveled, and "Champion" available only after beating hard, which actively halves your xp intake, the enemies are even higher leveled (excluding the first few routes) and enemy crits are even more likely, while yours aren't.
This just goes to show that every Pokémon game has its flaws, no matter how much you enjoy them. Nowadays I see a lot of people saying only good things about one game and only bad things about another
It’s the generation that grew up with those games, right now DP and BW2 are being praised mostly because it’s that time for DP remakes to be made, and for BW2 the kids who grew up playing those games are all grown up and are voicing their love for gen 5
@@cloud-oc5yq it seems to be the gen 5 fans are finally uniting after years of gen 5 being shit on. The music memes served as a resurgence for how great the gen actually was and how it was completely overlooked by many
Jwanie. Yep. No Pokemons are perfect. Like I love Gen. 5 and the duology are my favorite Pokemon games. But even I admit that the issues he mentioned are fair & understandable. But even those issues don't bother me that much just as long as I'm having fun. And this is just probably me, but despite some of it's issue, I feel like Black 2 & White 2 are the " closest " of being an perfected Pokemon game. But that's just me though. The only reason I was talking about it is because it use to be the most hated Pokemon game and many people probably have either never played it or just experience on how good it was. Not saying there opinion is illogical. But I'll deny anyone who say the Black & White duology us bad.
@@jjc4924 tbh I think gen 5 is the worst gen. Overall I think there are good and bad pokemon in gen 5, like in every gen. However because of the large amount of new pokemon in gen 5, there were alot of bad ones. (And ffs 2 of the best pokemon in the gen aren't available untill the post game, Zoroark and Volcarona...) However I could look past that if it weren't for 2 crucial things. the most important pokemon in the game were bad... namely the starters, the psuedo legendary and the box art legendaries. The starters, well they kinda speak for itself... they are overshadowed by litterally every other starter trio... The Pseudo legendary hydreigon would be fine if it wasn't the pseudo, but for a psuedo legendary it just looks too weird and ugly and not badass at all... (Easily couldve been way better with actual wings and not heads on the end of it's arms but rather just 3 heads and a some awesome claws, allso a leaner body.) The Box art legendaries are the worst offenders though... it's just a white and a black dragon... It's like "Let's get 2 Palkia's, paint 1 white and 1 black... and we have new legendaries..." Kyurem is just ugly and the combined forms look really bad... And the second thing why these games are bad, I am forced to take a dull legendary dragon into my champions battle... Forcing the player to use a specific pokemon? That is just REALLY bad in my opinion... Overall these things really ruïned my playthrough experience of these games... Still had fun playing them, but I much prefer playing gen 6, gen 7 or the earlyer gens over gen 5... All is just my opinion of course.
I actually like it, I like switching up my teams a few gyms in so sometimes its handy to have lower level trainers to grind newly bred or caught mons. Just my opinion though.
My biggest complaint about Galar: They dangle this very interesting story of Galar's past right in your face but never let you dive in deeper into the very interesting lore and force you to continue the Gym challenge. I know that taking on the Gyms are a huge part of Pokemon, but felt much more optional than in Galar. Heck, even in the beginning of the games, taking on the Gym challenge is treated more as a suggestion. However, in Sword and Shield, you're practically forced into it. I would have much prefer to investigate the lore of Galar than take on the Gym challenge as it seemed so much more interesting and fun.
@@KaaneDragonShinobi Yeah, that was also very annoying. Any time something really interesting happened, Leon practically pushed you aside, telling you not to worry and to just focus on the Gym Challenge while he ran off, more than likely getting lost along the way, to take of it himself. Past Champions actually asked you to help like Lance and Steven. Leon won't even let you try to help! The only time you do get to help is during the big final battle! That was so annoying!
@@Midnight3Wonder The thing people might say about Leon pushing you aside to try to defend his actions is that he was being responsible and looking out for you... Which I can get except... Lance actively helps you take on Team Rocket in Gen 2 and makes sure you're alright along the way, healing your team and sharing information (the former of which was VERY rare in the early games). Steven doesn't really do much but he does make sure you do what you do prepared, the same goes for Wallace who functions in the same way as Steven during the game's climax. Cynthia checks up on you and makes sure you're prepared, allowing you preparation time and makes sure you're absolutely ready, all while supervising you during the events so she'd probably step in if needed. Alder and Iris both do their fair share of work though nowhere close to Cynthia or Lance. Alder also points out when he can't actively carry on assisting because of his Champion duty actively pulling him away and even then he still tries his hardest to stop Team Plasma's plan during that battle. Even Diantha looks out for you (although more from afar than anyone up to this point). She still encourages you to follow your heart although of everyone here she had the least active role in keeping an eye out for you. Kukui/Hau not sure if they count since they're just the final battle and not officially the champion but they do have some presence in stopping the bad guys from ruining your adventure while not taking your freedom to step up out of your hands. Leon's just a shameless glory-hog. He relishes in the fame and popularity he has and soaks in everything because of his title which I genuinely believe under some circumstances were probably rigged by Rose. Anime Leon is far less bad because he makes it a point to educate Ash about Dynamax on the fly and let Ash handle the emergency situation he was in but that's not even really the same portrayal so I don't even know why I brought it up...
I have to wonder about Gen 8's "Tell, don't show" approach to its plot for pretty much the whole game not making the list. Every time something cool or interesting happens it is immediately pushed aside with some NPC being all "Focus on your gym challenge, I'll handle this!", and any time someone actually does something the screen turns black while it happens. The most frustrating moment to me, is when you beat Marnie's Brother, head out of town and see the straight path back toward Raihan's Gym and think "I can probably take that shortcut now and have a more interesting return trip since it's a place I've never been through before". Then you hear there's a Dynamax Pokemon going crazy along that path so you rush in literally seconds after Leon but are blocked by a crowd. So you have to take a flying taxi or backtrack pointlessly through multiple routes, and your reward? You get to hear people talking about how cool it was when Leon beat it into submission rather than seeing any semblance of a fight. Then you get to the big showdown with Eternatus and what do you know, the box legendaries show up and completely dominate the fight for you. Sure Gens 1 and 2 have little in the way of plot, but at least they're honest about it and don't constantly string you along with empty promises that something interesting is finally happening.
You can make it past that croud, you get a cutscene were Hop shows you a picture of the fight in the news I think is interesting how we have responsible adults that won't let childrem get involved in these dangerous situations, and just tell you to not worry while they deal with the problem
I guess it’s more realistic because the champion of the region and the strongest trainer around comes and attempts to save the world, rather than some random kid who is just wandering around. I’ve always wondered why in past gens you, being a 10 year old is tasked with, in Gen 6’s case, LITERALLY STOPPING THE WORLD FROM ENDING. The champion of the region should be the person who deals with this stuff, and it makes sense that Leon tries to take control of the situations, him being the Champion. I also liked how some people said “If Leon would have been training for his upcoming battle, which he knew he was going to have, instead of taking these big creatures, he might have won against the player” This sort of shows that Leon is a true champion who cares about his region more than his status, so I really liked that aspect of gen 8
Exactly. Something being realistic doesn't mean it's good for the participants. Unless you play the game exclusively for the competitive arena, you play them to experience an another world, with you yourself as the protagonist instead of the eleven year old kid in the game. RPGs make you associate with the character you are playing, not the other way round. Therefore, I believe it's perfectly normal for the game protagonists to handle the big events unlike they did in Sword/Shield.
Honestly, galar is the best region in 3D and it’s slightly better in the nonlinear thing thanks to the DLC which also added more postgame content and optional areas to explore and a postgame story. Pokémon Sword and Shield aren’t as linear as Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and Pokémon Sword and Shield aka galar does have a lot of optional areas (including the isle of armor and the crown tundra which added more optional/main game areas and postgame areas in the crown tundra), the isle of armor are considered to be main game and doesn’t requires you to be champion to visit and the crown tundra is postgame content and added more postgame/optional explorable caves, ruins, beaches, islands etc. And the wild area is a fun explorable part of the region and the most of the areas in the wild areas are optional and galar does have some explorable place that you can get lost easily like slumbering weald and the glimwood tangle and some mini islands in some routes, etc and I get lost easily there and in my opinion, the DLC even added more optional areas and postgame areas to explore and a postgame story revolves around legendaries. Pokémon Sword and Shield also have a great storyline and it’s not as bad as Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Gold and Silver. So overall, Pokémon Sword and Shield have the most optional explorable areas in all of Pokémon. And Pokémon Sword and Shield are my favorites Pokémon Games and the best Pokémon Games period.
One opinion to the Gen 5 (Unova) : I LOVE the fact that you unlock the "older" pokemon from the earlier games only after the main story. It was SO cool to encounter only new pokemon throughout the whole maingame. They should've done this in every game. I didn't like Gen 5 this much but this fact was soooo good.
I remarked with a friend that it was a bit odd that the escape rope became a key item in Galar when there were no complex dungeons that you might need an escape rope from. I do like that the fly analog was an early game unlock

I rather kantos grass routes than lazy environments that feel like they are just checking things off of a list. Like some are goo like the mushroom forest ( I forgot the name of it ) and the caves are good but I really dislike the random desert part in the wild area and the bland snow route that is basically a hallway.
if the routes and towns weren't a straight line with a path or two that diverged in a dead-end, they'd be my favourites. Galar Mine 1, Glimwood forest, Spikemuth, Mototoske, Hammerlocke and Circhester and Route 9 looked really interesting and looked so promising but I always got annoyed when they were mostly a straight path
yeah there were a lot of good route ideas that didn’t have the best execution imo. I’d also say that Galar lacked what I’d like to call “pseudo routes”, locations that operate like routes but aren’t really routes(where routes are the numbered routes as well as caves). Best it gets is the motostoke gym challenge which iirc can only be visited for the challenge. Kanto has 3 “psuedo routes” by comparison.
One of my issues with Sinnoh is the extreme lack of Fire types. Which, I'm not a huge fire type guy; however, it's hard to go with when the fire type elite four member only has 2 of their 5 pokemon be a fire type. and that's including the fire starter to make his team.
1. I would have been fine with this if it was explained in-universe. It seems that what the developers were going for was that 'Sinnoh is a cold region 🥶, so Fire types don't like it here', but that wasn't explained well in-game. 2. This was fixed in Platinum, so I've heard
I... actually liked the Rivals in X and Y... And here's pretty much a whole freakin' page as to why! "Gen 6 was a generation where I hid myself from as much pre-release information as possible. I wanted it to take me by surprise and I wanted it to feel special. When I finally set foot in the Kalos Region, it was a fresh and clean slate. The only things I knew were how to battle and the prior Pokémon I'd met. That's it. Almost instantly, the game introduces you to these few characters that at first you think won't go very far beyond the typical rival archetype of showing up after every gym or so and challenging you to a battle once in a while. But slowly as the game starts and you eventually meet the professor, he gives you some advice: "Be the best Trainer you can be! At the same time, remember to have fun traveling with your Pokémon!" When you put the thought into it, it's easy to see that every one of the friends/rivals takes that to heart and holds that advice very closely to their hearts. After that point alone, they don't try to battle you unless they want to. There's a singular battle circumstance after that and barring Serena/Calem who actually holds an interest in battling, they don't seek you out to battle you until after the story events involving Xerneas/Yveltal are solved (which is 6 badges later). For them, it was never about being the best at battling or being super amazing at contests or anything like that. The advice they were given was "Be the best you that you can be." So instead of aiming to be the best battler or anything else, they just focus on their personal interests and try to be helpful to other people or Pokémon when they can. They have plenty of doubts about their own abilities and at achieving their dreams but they're always willing to help out if they can. The reason that I like this so much is that you effectively become their beacon of confidence. Much like them, you're just doing your own thing but you also inspire them all with your actions. Team Flare scares them and yet Trevor, the meekest of the whole group, is the one that instantly stands up to them just because you're there supporting him. You have his back and he's gonna do his best to not let you down. If that's not a testament to the friendship that you share then I don't know what is. X and Y may not be the best games mechanically or from a story standpoint. But they REALLY knew what they were doing when they wrote the most important characters for the plot. They knew what they were doing when they wrote some of the minor characters as well. Pokémon X and Y are games that I'll never forget because they're the first Pokémon games that felt ALIVE to me. I'm glad I had the chance to play them."
Honestly, I think the best way to view it is that the rivals of X and Y are different types of player. Serena/Calem is the typical rival/person who just wants to beat the game and become champion. Trevor is the type of player who is more into completing the Pokedex and seeing all the new Pokemon in the game. Tierno is someone who enjoys doing thematic runs/challenges - for example, a team of Pokemon who all have at least one "dance" move. And Shauna is the type of player who just wants to see the world and all the new towns/routes/what have you, and experience it and have fun. They're all different and valid ways to play and experience the game. (I kinda see Wally in ORAS, especially in the postgame, as a fifth type of player; the ones who enjoy the post-game stuff or online battles, and focuses on making the best team he can.) But then, I also feel like while Team Flare was disappointing from a story perspective, their theme and what they represented actually worked kinda well.
My problem with the XY rivals isn't that they don't battle you much or anything like that, nor is it because they are easy, or uninterested in getting stronger. It's that they are one-dimensional. Tierno specifically is the most egregious example, and IMO one of the worst characters in Pokémon franchise history. He has zero personality apart from loving dancing, and does not change at all throughout the story. It feels like he only exists for comic relief.
I personally love Unova'mons, most of my favourites are from Unova. Snivy, Munna, Swoobat, Reshiram, Litwick, joltik, all the plant and bug pokemon from the forest... hell I even like the apes(monkey is the only Chinese zodiac with Yin and Yang in balance/black&white so fitting!) And Ramoth and Hydreigon as Godzilla easter eggs?! Hell yeah!
I love simisear. It’s my tenth favorite Pokémon. Not because of quality, because I kind of understand it, it’s meant to be silly, but it’s misunderstood, just like I have been for a while.
It's weird for me. I hate Unova because of it's pokemon. And that's despite Volcarona, Lilligant and Sigilyph easily being in my top 10 pokemon designs. But the pokemon that I don't like in Unova, is D E S P I S E.
And I'd rather have these games take more than 2 years to make and have actual changes implemented into them instead of this cookie cutter COD or Farcry model they have.
I'm calling bullshit on Unova having "lower quality mons", most of the dex is made up of REALLY good designs. Even the "lesser" designs are pretty cool, like try and tell me that Basculin is worse than Finneon or Luvdisc.
Dude I know. IMHO gen 5 has so many great designs that when he said that I was like... Kinda hurt lol. Gen 8 had the worst Pokemon designs, but I'm aware that that's an unpopular opinion. Still hate most of them.
Pedro Monteiro Ok Genwunner, keep talking shit about Gen 5 while lazy Pokémon designs like Muk, Slimer, Electrode, and Voltorb exist. Pokémon like Scoliopede and Volcarona will look better than Gen 1’s Pokémon any day.
4:53: EXACTLY the reason why I can barely remember anything about Johto. It literally just felt like Kanto's DLC pack. :( (PSA: JOHTO STILL HAS IT'S POSITIVES, IF YOU LIKE JOHTO, THAT IS AWESOME!)
All I ask is that dark types actually appear in Johto. If I want to use a tyranitar, I shouldn't have to wait until the very last area in the entire game (in kanto, at that) to get a larvitar that I'll have to train up anyway. Houndour and Murkrow should be in Johto, obviously. Yeah I can use Umbreon, but I usually don't want to for in-game.
@@mr.sandman7339 Exactly. Give X and Y some credit; they introduced their new typing correctly by allowing you to capture Pokemon with it during the main game
Imo it's actually the opposite. I find Kanto so... bland. Anyways, gens 1 and 2 should be retconned into a single gen (since they would be a single game if released nowadays thanks to DLC). Change my mind
17:23 I've been saying that for so long! I don't transfer my pokemon forward often, but I still didn't like the removal of the national dex. SM/USUM was better in this regard, where the national dex was gone but pokemon still existed and could be transferred into the games. The fact they did nothing to calm the fans down and actually seemed to double down on their choice was incredibly, INCREDIBLY dumb. Some fans might have overreacted, but GameFreak failed hard for doing nothing for damage control.
@@kwayke9 TPC and the fans as well. This isn't the first time pokemon from previous gens have been omitted. It didn't go well last time, either. Besides, my point wasn't about the national dex directly. It was about GameFreak being stupid in handling the situation. No reassurance, no promises to include them, no explanations, nothing for damage control. No one was right in that whole garbage fest. Fans who attacked gamefreak were way too rude, fans who defended them ignored what they DID do wrong, and fans who just wanted to play pokemon were treated as ignorant and wrong for not picking a side.
The issue was also that they promised a lot of quality as a trade-off for missing a lot of the national dex. Half the pokemon are gone, but the pokemon that are still here will be polished to the max. On that, they absolutely didn't deliver.
Galar was actually handled very well. The level of detail is a lot more than you see on the surface. There are a lot of nods to the UK in more than just the layout of the region, the British slang/phrases, the localized town names structured like actual English place names, etc. You have, for example, the route signs looking like road speed signs, motorstoke and circhester heavily resembling their IRL locations (Manchester and Bath respectively), shops/ticket machines in the stations look in gb exactly like ones in UK stations, the battle cafes basically are Costa Coffee shops, footpath signs, dry stone walls... If that's the level of detail that pokemon put into their games, I think we are in for a treat for the remakes. (remember, galar was from scratch, they have an existing region to go off of)
I remember one time I wanted to play through black 2 without deleting my old save file, meaning I'd have to keep my DS on and not save the game. But then when you reach pokestar studios you HAVE to save the game, meaning I couldn't continue my playthrough without deleting my save
PeachieQueen I actually found it less tedious than previous games. Audino grinding was a godsend and the postgame provided you high enough-leveled opponents to reach level 100 at a decent rate.
It sounds bad on paper but remember , pokemon also got more exp if they were on a lower level. That gave you incentive to train multiple pokemon and overall is a nice strategy to prevent overleveling and a bad level cap like in Gen 2
This. Combine it with the higher evolution levels and grinding through those games just became a tedious slog. Gen 5 is the only generation that I played through one time on one game and never looked back. I haven't tried Gen 8 since I don't have a Switch, but right now Gen 5 is my rock bottom.
Kalos is still my favorite region purely because of aesthetic and the Pokedex. Yeah the game might be easy, all Pokemon games are easy after playing them for over 20 years, but at least I will be happy to be there because the region and themes are so pretty. The biggest problem in any game for me was Sun and Moon's lack of freedom. Even in games like Unova or Kalos which are linear the stopping points are fewer and farther between, never had I felt as much like I was on a track as when I was in Alola. However my least favorite games are Sword and Shield, I have only played through once and I haven't even bothered to get the DLC. It's not that I am through with Pokemon I am doing a new playthrough of Crystal on my 3DS, I just don't like Galar.
@@user-oy7sh9uy2b Unova has better story than any Pokémon game you can think of. Johto well. I'll admit it isn't the best but it's far better than Galar and maybe Kalos
day 2 of suggesting this: ron! i have a suggestion for a pokemon video. if you have the time, why not draw your adventures with your partner pokemons? like maybe a scenery where you and avery the breloom catch a pokemon; or the many stories you’ve yet to tell with the breloom. something like that that helped you form bonds with your favorite pokémans. maybe a drawing where you and zangoose defeat noland. draw it in a more expressive scene that’s not limited to the game’s visual.
it's like everyone just skipped over all the good things that Galar did and skipped over the fact that the flaws actually signal better things for the future and are instead focusing on the fact that there were 5 flaws instead of 4

My biggest problem with gen 5 (at least in B&W) was that you had to face a rival before and after every gym. I always thought rival battles were special because you faced them only a few times. But Cheren and Bianca challenge you constantly. I hated that aspect
To be fair, they are probably some of the best rivals in the series and they do have character development unlike say May, Wally or any of the Gen. 6 rivals.
"People dont like alola because you can't go anywhere without someone battling you" So... you mean like doing the thing that pokemon is about? EDIT: this is a joke
I think they meant the cutscenes and confrontations in general. Also the story forced battles. Add those on top of the route battles and the game is constantly halting you.
I mean the unnecessary ones like how Your rival wants to fight you at every new town it felt like but he mainly meant the cut scenes you couldn't walk ten step with out someone bothering you
You basically can't explore, you always get lead right through the very simple routes, nothing interesting happens besides forced battles which are way too easy anyways
EVERYTHING you just said about Johto is what I’ve been saying for years. Johto is just Kanto V.2, and that’s a FACT, and the leveling is totally garbage. I love them still, but they’re by far my least favorite games in the series.
Johto and Kanto were supposed to be "one big region" so they being related so much is something to be expected, and isn't a bad thing. It is actually one of the best things in the game, how you can face 2 regions and even beat the protagonist of the first one.
@David Villagrana Thats the best think in this region. You forced to grind before E4, so you feel their power and defeating them first time is very rewarding. Not that shit when you one shot your oponents in championships like in sword/shield. I wish they back to that formula.
@@msu7777GSC level curve is something else.. as a 16 year old today I spent 3-4 hours trying to get my entire team to level 23 right after whitneys gym so I wouldn’t have to worry about grinding much later on, kids nowadays will get bored of grinding for 4 hours, so they just simply have to dumb it down, I dread facing the E4 and knowing how long I’ll have to grind for, it’s better off if you over level whenever you can in that game and I personally don’t find it enjoyable
@@cloud-oc5yq Thats the lazy explanaitions. Whats so exciting about one shoting enemy without any difficulty? Kids playing pokemongo that difficulty is higher than sword/shield and dont get bored.
I mean it is a very hot take, but then again - maybe you are not wrong. The third game can make a huge difference. Let's take generation 3 for example, Ruby / Safire were... less than great. But Emerald was my favourite Pokemon game for like 15 years after it came out. So as much as gen 6 doesn't have much going for it, I can't deny it's possible they could have yet again work a miracle with the third game
The 3rd entry of a generation us usually much superior to the others. Pokemon yellow might be an exception because you get pikachu as a starter, but atleast you can get all 3 starters in the same game plus better sprites and less glitches. Gen 2 had sprite animations, the suicune plot and the battle tower. Gen 3 had sprite animations again, both legendaries, a new plot and - most important of all- the BATTLE FRONTIER! Gen 4 fixed a lot of the pacing problems, a new and very sick plot involving giratina and - again - the battle frontier! Gen 5 is the first generation where there was no 3rd entry, instead they introduced Black 2/White 2 which apart from taking place in the same region where difficulty enough to be considered their own game. I didn't buy X and Y because I thought Z would be the one entry that outclasses the other 2 and saves Generation 6 (plus I just want my Battle frontier back) . Oh well...
The high evolution levels of a lot of the Pokémon is definitely my favorite favorite thing about Gen 5. Otherwise, aside from some bad Pokémon among a lot of good ones, I think the games are great. Also Gen 7 is overhated.
ngl I can easily agree with everything you have said. You are a very positive person, and the flaws that you mentioned are the ones that I experience too, I really like someone who has good explanations for all the things they say, and Ron does it very well.
As a competitive player myself: no, *it is.* Defog only became a good move after it was done being a worthless HM. Flash was bad enough for wasting a moveslot to clear an arbitrary environmental annoyance, but Defog is worse because it does this with an annoyance that makes battles extremely frustrating if you don't use the move beforehand, all thanks to the absolute worst weather condition ever made. Thank goodness fog never made it past Gen 4.
@@MrPatrickbuit You clearly missed this part: "Defog only became a good move after it was done being a worthless HM." I said this because Defog only cleared hazards on the opponent's side at first (back when it was an HM) - this was changed in XY, when it started clearing hazards on both sides (and thus became the competitive powerhouse it is today).
@@MrPatrickbuit Eh, you're not the only one. I still ladder in Gen 4 OU sometimes, and on occasion, I see people running 'mons like Flygon with Defog... and I laugh every time. XD
gen 5 was my first gen so it was always weird finding old pokemon in the beginnings of the next games. idk how i would feel if I ended up playing gen 4 or 3 first and having to wait but i've always wanted a game with an all new cast of pokemon so I could re-experience that feeling from my childhood, you can hardly jump into games spoiler free these days let alone being able to learn and discover things on your own. Looking at gamefreak now though it's hard to imagine them putting so much effort in. i justified pokestar studios as probably being really appealing to japanese fans or something but ffs i dont think they like it either
Great point about Jhoto having such limited access to new mons, I think this was one of my favorite parts about new games and a big part to why gen5 has always been my favorite.
Hearing anything negative about gen2 hurts me!! Yeah, gen 2 can sometimes feel like an expansion pack to gen 1, but at the time it was supposed to!! One thing I will totally agree on though is the level curve is absolute bs.
One Of The Worst Things About Gen 8: No Enhanced Version Just Like Gen 6. WHAT WOULD A Third Version To Pokémon Sword and Shield For eternatus As The Game Mascot BE CALLED ? Pokémon Cannon or Pokémon Spear ? if it were to happened ? if The DLC Never Happens.
Master Balls never failed in Gen I under normal circumstances, only through glitches. The 1/256 chance only occurred for 100% accurate moves, if I'm not mistaken.
My opinions: Gen 1: Games are broken and are pretty much held together by glue and string. Gen 2: Most of the bosses (gym leaders, elite four, team rocket admins, etc) are underwhelming and kind of easy. Gen 3: Too much required HM usage. Gen 4: Diamond and Pearl are way too slow. Gen 5: Worst anime seasons. Gen 6: Megas were too broken in the main game since barely any NPCs used them. Gen 7: Too many cutscenes and the games somehow felt slower then Diamond and pearl. Probably the most bored I’ve ever felt playing Pokemon. Gen 8: Haven’t played since Gen 7 kind of burned me out. From what I’ve seen the biggest problem I’d probably have is them still using the same models and animations for old Pokemon. Don’t have anything against the models but seeing the same ones for 3 straight gens would just be annoying.
@@Caerulis Yeah I personally don't mind reusing the model, but they need to improve the animations of those models to make them more dynamic/lifelike, up the textures like you said to improve visual fidelity, and please dear god fix the color saturation that makes half of the roster look washed out.
@@tristanneal9552 Yeah I agree, Pokemon are very static and awkward in these games. Actually I never noticed the colour saturation thing. U saying the colours are less vivid or sumting?
You know gen 5 is the best when the main flaw isn't even related to the games lol. Gen 8's main flaw is probably its presentation and lack of quality control. A lot of the game felt like it was unfinished or was rushed. One example I have had an issue with that no one ever talks about is how music abruptly cuts and starts into the next song with no transition. This is very obvious when traveling from a route to a town or from a town to a route. The music just cuts off and then the next song immediately starts and it throws me off every time. That's just one example of the lack of polish. Other things are talked about in this video like animations being lackluster even though some animations are really good, the draw distance, etc. The game itself is streamlined so it's less tedious to play than gen 6 or 7, but it just feels like the game isn't fully polished. And of course, the way Gamefreak handled PR is the worst with gen 8. They just seem so tone deaf about it, like they hear the complaints but then ignore them and double down on their decisions without addressing fan concerns.
@@tristanneal9552 I also don't mind about reusing the model, but i thought the animation is going to be really good because they said they will going to cut the dex to improve the animation, but some of them are garbage. The signature move though it's pretty cool.
I really like the positivity in all regions, even if some have more problems than others. Also, I think Hoenn and Unova are the best regions, with the best games being RSE, and then BW and B2W2, with HGSS as a close third.
Reece. That & the layout progression is ridiculous. And I'm probably the minority out there, but I didn't think Hoenn was that great compared to the likes of say Sinnoh, Johto or any other regions. I found them pretty underwhelming & forgettable. Especially with the whole progression fiasco.
The plot in Kanto _is_ you getting the Gym Badges, filling the Dex, and becoming the Champion. "Being the very best like no one ever was." (And along the way, you beat the mafia.)
@@a-s-greig how is that different from johto? you actually beat 2 regions getting 16 gym badges, fill 2 regions pokedex, fuck up the mafia in 2 different regions, not letting then rise again, become the new champion and beat the shit out of the previous champion who went to train in the mountains
I think Hoen is actually pretty slow too, even in the remakes, and X and Y, while very replayable, have very forgettable characters, and no matter how many times I play it I never remember most of them, and sun and moon are amazing but all the town cut sciens are horrible
Hoenn didn't seem slow to me, but I was in no rush to just beat it, unlike most pokemon games (despite the easyness) I actually liked the game and the post game
The only postgame it has is Battle Frontier. That's it. There's no new areas to explore, no more trainers to battle, nothing. U can captured Legendary Pokemons. Cool. But that's all your doing if u don't like the Battle Frontier ( Like me. I know I'm minority out there. But I'm sorry. I don't find the Battle Frontier that interesting. ). And yeah. I found Hoenn way slower than the likes of say Sinnoh because of ridiculous layout progression and to much HM'S. That & the selection & variety of Pokemon is lacking.
my complaint about pokemon sun. and moon is the way you capture the legendaries instead of going to remote island or different realm you have to go through a single wormhole and go into one
@@jjc4924 When people say Sinnoh is slow, they're talking about the literal speed of the game's engine. It sounds like you're referring to the pacing of the game being slow, if I'm understanding correctly (If I'm misunderstanding, feel free to correct me or to completely ignore the comment since I'm replying to something that's months old)
Getting rid of the National Dex was going to happen eventually as there's almost 1000 Pokémon now and coding each one in is more difficult than just taking their models and dropping them in as you have to code in their animations, their move pool, their cries, pretty much everything that revolves around every Pokémon
Mostly in Gen. 3 & especially 4 and what sucks more is that I have to carry 2 or 3 HM slavers that I may or may not want to be part of my party members. In terms of overbundents of HM'S, Gen. 4 is the worst. But in terms of carrying an HM slaver, Gen. 3 is the worst IMO because at least in Platinum, u have Biberal & Tropius that can do many HM's.
1:29 WHAAAAT? I didn’t know Master Balls could miss in gen 1! EDIT: 10:53 Also, Chandelure, I am using a Litwick I got from Island Scan in USUM but I am getting tired because now that the opponents Pokémon are at least evolved and maybe fully evolved, he can’t do as well as before! I really wish Litwick could at least evolve into Lampent at a lower level... (and yes Chandelure is one of my favorite Pokémon)
I’d argue alola has a lot of exploration. I understand not liking hand holding but after the game let’s you loose there are a lot of place to explore that are off the beaten path. I could understand the argument tho
There were some cool places to explore, and I went into the game with a pretty open mind. But I still felt exploration was more tedious than even Diamond. Diamond may have been slow, but at least you could poke around places more.
Loved this video, the criticisms felt very measured. I feel like a lot of people get hyperbolic when they describe flaws with Pokemon games. In truth, I think your favorite Pokemon game is mostly a function of what place you were at in life when you played it.
I liked it too. I don't think people have a problem with pokestar studios itself, just the fact that it's both mandatory AND at the beginning of the game. It should be been handled like contests and seen as just supplemental.
Worst part of each gen: Kanto: Jynx Johto: Jynx Hoenn: Jynx Sinnoh: Jynx Unova: Jynx Kalos: Jynx Alola: Jynx Galar: Having Jynx with no Greninja (I know Jynx isn't in it yet but that piece of sh*t will be in the crown tundra)
Ron: "Worst part of Gen 5" Me: *So you have chosen, death.* No but seriously. One thing I found myself disliking about gen 5 is more of a nitpick: Some of the Pokemon designs. It's fine and all, but be honest with yourself. Some of the designs were pretty trash...Literally. Looking at you Trubbish. And Alomomola not evolving fron Luvdisc.
All gens have ugly pokemon. Trubbish is ugly, but has a really good design. The elemental monkeys, on the other side, didn't have a good design because they didn't use well the theme they are inspired on. Throh and Sawk are very questionable too, but gen 5 has very good designs in general
Fancy .Fancington trubbish and garbodor aren’t the worst design in the series. i would’ve preferred a wider mouth on garbodor, but i can appreciate the detail in the ripped bags and pieces of junk. basculin on the other hand...
Gen 5 definitely introduced my favorite dex with mons like bisharp, hydreigon, seismitoad, Or scrafty, but I’m not gonna let the awful ones like basculin or alolamola get in the way, and gen 5 was around during a great time of people’s lives being 2010-13, I know gen 6 came out in 2013 but it was like October so it was more like 2014-16
I quite liked Gen 8! It gave me that sense of nostalgia like BW did. X and Y has terrible characters (Shauna) so it’s really hard to get through, and Gen 7 is sooo slow when it comes to cutscenes. I quite liked the characters in Gen 8, once again because they reminded of BW, and the cutscenes weren’t that bad, really, especially if you replay the game and know what you’re doing. You can just hold b and mash a to skip everything! It’s not as bad as people make it out to be, and I like how Ron handled it, and basically pointed out most of the major flaws that I can agree with.
@@Hazel-xl8in At least we see Shauna a bit. I liked her as well since she was a good friend. Not a good rival, but a good friend. I just wish Trevor and...Tierno, I think his name is?... were either cut or one of them were made a serious rival or something.
It's funny, that most of the ,,worst parts'' of Sinnoh actually enhanced my experience, since they made the calm region more atmospheric. The Team Galactic Grunts might be an exception though, since most of them are very uninformed about the true goals, while still following them obediently. However Zyrus, the designs of the commanders and the plans Team Galactic at all followed were that interesting to me, that this team is still my favourite.
11:04 OMG so true! I found myself totally overwhelmed when I finished the game with my pkmn in the lvl 50s and the suddenly BAM! All pkmn in the grassland and from trainers are level freaking EIGHTY!
Johto doesn't make sense. They have a Ghost Type Gym and it introduces only one Ghost Type Pokemon, but none of the gym trainers or Morty had a Misdreavus...and it was only found in Mt. Silver. Like, why?
The goal with Johto was to not repeat any Gym types from the last game. That's why you have a Dragon-type Gym when Johto added the total Dragon count of Kingdra to the mix.
Actually the "minor" RSE and ORAS flaws you mentioned were a pretty huge deal to me. I loved my original Pokemon Yellow team with all my heart and transferred it over to Johto postgame. When RSE rolled around I was super excited to do the same thing again and I just couldn't. It kind of hurts me to this day since, if it hadn't happened my battery on my silver version running dry wouldn't have been such an issue. To make matters worse, it made it very hard to near-impossible to get access to old-gen mons. You spent so much time carefully completing your Dex, you were so proud of it and then it just fell into a shallow grave. It made me seriously dislike the third gen for years. Concerning ORAS, I loooved the Battle Frontier in Emerald. And I was absolutelz certain it would return. Honestly, it was the main reason I bought OR in the first place. Upon finding out its gone, I didnt even finish the game. To this day, it is, alongside Ultra Sun, the only Pokemon Edition I've never completed.
Wait you seriously didn't beat ORAS only because it didn't have something like the battle frontier in it's post game? That's like not beating HGSS because it doesn't have gambling in the game corner...
@@V-Jes I guess in a way, yeah. (Although that's obviously a lackluster comparison). As previously mentioned, I don't have quite as much love for rse in my heart as many others, even though I grew to appreciate it over the years. And then it took away the thing I was most looking forward to. Sucked the fun out of it for me. I know that they apparently have some nice postgame content so I might start another attempt someday.
@@UltimateVegetto not only do they have nice post game content not found on GBA but the games main game is also lot more refined thanks to better story/pacing along with the gameplay additions like physical/special split from gen 4, much better xp system from gen 5 and every pokemon having much better movepools in general making it lot less grindy than the GBA versions, tho those improvements do naturally make it easier and the gen 6 additions of EXP share and Mega's can make it too easy but those are optional features so can't really complain about those.
@@V-Jes Yah, I'm very well aware of the gameplay mechanics, they are Gen 6 after all. I think the furthest I got was where you got one of the Aeon-Pokémon after beating daddy. Maybe one day. Till then I'll just jam out to Zinnia's theme without knowing who she is :D
I'm glad someone mentioned the cloud hanging over gen3. As much as I like gen3, the fact that I couldnt transfer any pokemon to it even after beating it was just, well, devastating. Also while johto and Kanto felt conjoined, hoen felt very isolated from all the pokemon I had grown to love in the previous gen. It was sort of jarring to have NO continuity pokemon wise. Like, a pokemon game without eevee? Ugh it felt so off at first.
Sun and moon were my first games in the series. Incineroar was my first Pokémon and is my favorite. I liked sun and moon a lot from the hype building up to playing FFA wit friends. Am I mad that you pointed out flaws in the game? No. Cuz you can’t truly appreciate anything without accepting the faults. I just wish people didn’t hate the game as much but it’s fine ig, maybe if they ever remake them they can cut down on a lot of stuff or something idk...I just love Alolan a lot
honestly, even if some don't like the slow pacing in DPPl, I feel like it actually helps the game rather than hinder it. it allows the player to take the time to take in the region and its inhabitants compared to just zooming through and beating the game in a flash.
As a person who loves Gen 5 like a lot I can definitely admit to the flaws you mentioned and especially the last one with Pokéstar Studios since I HATED THAT PART OF THE GAME. It not only seems like the waste of game storage and content but also just completely pointless and the fact it’s required sorta sucks The higher evolution levels during B/W 1 I agree we’re sorta sucky and god I felt so exhausted and tired when I basically had to grind my butt off to Audino EXP hunting. I have to say this video is really well down and great in my opinion keep doing good my dude 👍

STARBAEHR after you beat the game lmao
That’d be sick

@@jjc4924 tbh I think gen 5 is the worst gen.
Overall I think there are good and bad pokemon in gen 5, like in every gen. However because of the large amount of new pokemon in gen 5, there were alot of bad ones. (And ffs 2 of the best pokemon in the gen aren't available untill the post game, Zoroark and Volcarona...)
However I could look past that if it weren't for 2 crucial things.
the most important pokemon in the game were bad...
namely the starters, the psuedo legendary and the box art legendaries.
The starters, well they kinda speak for itself... they are overshadowed by litterally every other starter trio...
The Pseudo legendary hydreigon would be fine if it wasn't the pseudo, but for a psuedo legendary it just looks too weird and ugly and not badass at all... (Easily couldve been way better with actual wings and not heads on the end of it's arms but rather just 3 heads and a some awesome claws, allso a leaner body.)
The Box art legendaries are the worst offenders though... it's just a white and a black dragon...

Especially when the region is based on a place filled with so much culture and mythology of its own that they could've drawn inspiration from.

Player Character: GYMNASIUM TIME
@@KaaneDragonShinobi Yeah, that was also very annoying.
You can make it past that croud, you get a cutscene were Hop shows you a picture of the fight in the news
I think is interesting how we have responsible adults that won't let childrem get involved in these dangerous situations, and just tell you to not worry while they deal with the problem
And hell I could hardly care less about Gen I, but at least it has more excuses than Gen VIII.
So overall,
Pokémon Sword and Shield have the most optional explorable areas in all of Pokémon. And Pokémon Sword and Shield are my favorites Pokémon Games and the best Pokémon Games period.

I rather kantos grass routes than lazy environments that feel like they are just checking things off of a list. Like some are goo like the mushroom forest ( I forgot the name of it ) and the caves are good but I really dislike the random desert part in the wild area and the bland snow route that is basically a hallway.
Sammy The Mutt you mean victory road? Yeah that was terrible.
if the routes and towns weren't a straight line with a path or two that diverged in a dead-end, they'd be my favourites.

But slowly as the game starts and you eventually meet the professor, he gives you some advice:
"Be the best Trainer you can be! At the same time, remember to have fun traveling with your Pokémon!"
When you put the thought into it, it's easy to see that every one of the friends/rivals takes that to heart and holds that advice very closely to their hearts.
(I kinda see Wally in ORAS, especially in the postgame, as a fifth type of player; the ones who enjoy the post-game stuff or online battles, and focuses on making the best team he can.)
But then, I also feel like while Team Flare was disappointing from a story perspective, their theme and what they represented actually worked kinda well.
@@DrakeVonKat i would take the rivals from x and y over Brendan and may anyway because at least they have personality
Also, which rivals do you love? Just curious.
Hopefully Pokémon Masters does the rivals some justice. Can’t wait until the remakes of X/Y

Houndour and Murkrow should be in Johto, obviously. Yeah I can use Umbreon, but I usually don't want to for in-game.

Imo it feels more like Game Freak wanted the national dex gone long ago to focus on other things but TPCi forced them to put it in in some way
@@kwayke9 TPC and the fans as well.
"I think the definitive version of Kanto is the remakes"
Yes
With the way they handled Galar, I’d rather not have a Sinnoh remake. Imagine those complex routes being turned to straight paths.
(remember, galar was from scratch, they have an existing region to go off of)
I'd ONLY accept a Sinnoh remake if it's done be a completely different studio, like Monolith Soft. Actually, just hand all the core games to them.
TheAbsol I second this. There is so much potential a Switch game holds, too much to be wasted.
it wouldnt be a remake if they actually turned the routes into "straight paths"
I mean, straight routes problem is here since Gen 7. But at least in Gen 7 you had some interesting routes
I remember one time I wanted to play through black 2 without deleting my old save file, meaning I'd have to keep my DS on and not save the game. But then when you reach pokestar studios you HAVE to save the game, meaning I couldn't continue my playthrough without deleting my save
I didnt know how to delete my save back in the day so this was the only way I ever played black one
Why did i read pornstar studio XD
They should make at least 3 save slots in the title screen, just like super Mario bros
I don't like how in gen 5 they introduced the "higher the level your pokemon is the less exp you get" mechanic.
Same. It made sense objectively, but it made level-grinding extremely tedious
@@cjtoledo2510 I didn't have nearly as much of a problem with that. It was annoying, but not as obnoxious as gen 5.

Hot Take: If Pokémon Z was ever made, Gen 6 would be a top three generation
Facts man
I mean it is a very hot take, but then again - maybe you are not wrong.
@Phoebe LaRose The theory is that they wanted to get gen 7 out for the 20th anniversary, so they skipped Z.
Oh well...

As a competitive player myself: no, *it is.* Defog only became a good move after it was done being a worthless HM. @@MrPatrickbuit You clearly missed this part: "Defog only became a good move after it was done being a worthless HM." I think gen 5 was meant to be a reboot to the series which is why all of the pokemon are new
Does anyone really dislike Ron. He is one of the nicest RUclipsrs EVER!
Great point about Jhoto having such limited access to new mons, I think this was one of my favorite parts about new games and a big part to why gen5 has always been my favorite.
For the sin of Pokestar Studios we were given "would you like to use another repel?" A deal I will take.
"We don't know who the ghost girl is"
Oh, we all know who she is and where you can find her. ;)
Hearing anything negative about gen2 hurts me!! Yeah, gen 2 can sometimes feel like an expansion pack to gen 1, but at the time it was supposed to!! One thing I will totally agree on though is the level curve is absolute bs.
The fact that the elemental evo stones are post game piss me off because gyardos wasn't that good in gen 2
I think the main problem with Gen 8 is Sonia telling you more about Galar’s history at every turn.
YASS! IT’S SO ANNOYING! I just skip through it!
I quite like team galactic, but I can see how they would be a con considering how great some other teams are.
Team Yell is the worst Evil Team. At least Team Galactic have a specific goal and pose a serious threat in the Games.
My opinions:
Gen 1: Games are broken and are pretty much held together by glue and string.
I honestly see no point of remodeling the same Pokémon. They should instead add texture and new movements/stances to the actual sprites.
Agreed.
I like Hoenn but for me Emerald is hard for me to go back to because I feel like my Pokémon weren’t getting enough good moves
Reece. That & the layout progression is ridiculous. And I'm probably the minority out there, but I didn't think Hoenn was that great compared to the likes of say Sinnoh, Johto or any other regions. I found them pretty underwhelming & forgettable. Especially with the whole progression fiasco.
The true flaw of Hoenn is NOT ENOUGH WATER
I found a Team Aqua member! Get em!
So lack of plot is a problem for Johto but not Kanto?
Ffs kanto doesn’t even have a plot
The plot in Kanto _is_ you getting the Gym Badges, filling the Dex, and becoming the Champion. "Being the very best like no one ever was."
(And along the way, you beat the mafia.)
Kanto is Become the champion. Collect many pokemon. While mafia assholes get in your way sometimes.
@@a-s-greig how is that different from johto? you actually beat 2 regions getting 16 gym badges, fill 2 regions pokedex, fuck up the mafia in 2 different regions, not letting then rise again, become the new champion and beat the shit out of the previous champion who went to train in the mountains
And linear progression only applies to Unova?
I think Hoen is actually pretty slow too, even in the remakes, and X and Y, while very replayable, have very forgettable characters, and no matter how many times I play it I never remember most of them, and sun and moon are amazing but all the town cut sciens are horrible
Hoenn didn't seem slow to me, but I was in no rush to just beat it, unlike most pokemon games (despite the easyness) I actually liked the game and the post game
Slow how? What do you mean??
I think the need for HMs are the most annoying thing in these games.
I think gen 1 hm problem is also bad because you can't unlearn them which means you can't get rid of them
1:29 WHAAAAT? I didn’t know Master Balls could miss in gen 1! EDIT: 10:53 Also, Chandelure, I am using a Litwick I got from Island Scan in USUM but I am getting tired because now that the opponents Pokémon are at least evolved and maybe fully evolved, he can’t do as well as before! I really wish Litwick could at least evolve into Lampent at a lower level... (and yes Chandelure is one of my favorite Pokémon)
Yup! It happens with 100% accurate moves too. It’s called a Gen 1 miss, and the odds of missing are 1/256.
Everyone thought defogger sucked until it removed entry hazards in gen 5

Huh, PokeStar Studios was one of my favorite parts of B2/W2, so I'm surprised to hear that so many think of it as a flaw.
It's mandatory through the main quest. Same with PWT. Yeah. But I enjoyed both of them as well. So it doesn't bother me.
I liked it too. I don't think people have a problem with pokestar studios itself, just the fact that it's both mandatory AND at the beginning of the game. It should be been handled like contests and seen as just supplemental.
I forgot today was a Saturday, so this was a pleasant surprise!
Worst part of each gen:
Kanto: Jynx
Johto: Jynx
Hoenn: Jynx
Sinnoh: Jynx
Unova: Jynx
Kalos: Jynx
Alola: Jynx
Galar: Having Jynx with no Greninja (I know Jynx isn't in it yet but that piece of sh*t will be in the crown tundra)
There's some real raw energy with this comment
I like all gens but jynx is a sin.
Jynx is in Hoenn? I don't think so. also I thought Jynx wasn't in Gen 5 but I now remember it's in Giant Chasm (y'know, Kyurem's Cave). feck.
@@abarette_ Obviously you never played FRLG

Ron: "Worst part of Gen 5"
Me: *So you have chosen, death.*
No but seriously.
Gen 5 definitely introduced my favorite dex with mons like bisharp, hydreigon, seismitoad,
Or scrafty, but I’m not gonna let the awful ones like basculin or alolamola get in the way, and gen 5 was around during a great time of people’s lives being 2010-13, I know gen 6 came out in 2013 but it was like October so it was more like 2014-16
@Ollie Haze I only like Simisage, and Simipour,Simisear though i don't really like it.
I actually like trubbish and garbodor
According to most fans on the internet, the worst parts of Gens 6-8 are everything -_-
I quite liked Gen 8!
Zanzibo -Zanny- i kinda liked shauna tbh, i just felt like the group was a little too crowded. the dialogue could also have been given a rewrite imo.
@@Hazel-xl8in
At least we see Shauna a bit.
My dad says happy b-day and he Hope's your doing well
Johto doesn't make sense.
Ugh it felt so off at first.

honestly, even if some don't like the slow pacing in DPPl, I feel like it actually helps the game rather than hinder it. it allows the player to take the time to take in the region and its inhabitants compared to just zooming through and beating the game in a flash.
As a person who loves Gen 5 like a lot I can definitely admit to the flaws you mentioned and especially the last one with Pokéstar Studios since I HATED THAT PART OF THE GAME. It not only seems like the waste of game storage and content but also just completely pointless and the fact it’s required sorta sucks
The higher evolution levels during B/W 1 I agree we’re sorta sucky and god I felt so exhausted and tired when I basically had to grind my butt off to Audino EXP hunting.
I have to say this video is really well down and great in my opinion keep doing good my dude 👍
