The old girl gets it done!!! Doesn't matter what color it is, old iron horsepower was under rated. No electronics and computers to regulate what it did. Just an engine and gears and lotsa grunt!!
The tread type also has to factor in on how well a tractor pull along with the proper weights that put the horse power to the ground regardless of what the color of the tractor is also
This is why everyone loves the old iron so much - sure the newer stuff can do a better job and not work so hard but the old iron WILL do it, even if it has to work harder than you thought it could. If anyone needed another reason as to why your dad likes the 46 so much....just point them to this video lol
Amazing how those sounds and sights take you back. Spent quite a bit of my youth in the cab of our 4640 w quad-range. Was awfully fond of that machine; I don’t think it ever let us down.
@@angus4202 well certainly if it’s been done before it can be done again. But the big thing is they’re just not as productive as a mfwd tractor. No sense in burning more fuel with slipping tires.
It's nice to see the older tractors out and working. But the key word is older and sometimes it can be hard on the engine and the transmission. matching the right horsepower for the piece of equipment is very important matching the right horsepower for the piece of equipment is very important. Have a great day
Surprisingly just the right amount of slippage and if you are in "C" range then plenty of power so looks like a perfect match. There's something about the 4600 model that just oozes power. I ran a 4620 with a 6 bottom plow and it just never pulled down as opposed to the 4020 with 5 bottoms which required constant draft control. And it was also one of the first with a real quiet cab.
This tractor would be able to pull this implement except down the road if it had the 8 speed power shift transmission the part of hydraulic system that runs the transmission takes up to much horsepower where the quad range transmission does not need the hydraulic system. That is the only reason this 4640 pulled this implement like it did.
My bet was that the old steel would pull it through. I own newer machines and old hp isn't equivalent to new hp. The new DEF stuff just bogs down under overload while the old machines give smoke and will pull at lower speed.
The 4640 is just a great tractor - love the old iron! Also like how the Landsaver tills the bean stubble. As usual, exceptional quality video from Ryan!
I was very impressed with the 46! Even as you went down the Alphabet.. a few letters. I was expecting once you took off she Screaming , barking, an rolling coal, front end going up just like at a tractor pull.
We had a John Deere 360 32' double offset back in the 70's. Pulled it with a Case 2470 (170 hp, 4WD) One day the front driveshaft sheared off and the back tires just dug a hole -- didn't move a bit after we lost the front wheels. Proved the value of 4WD to us! Had a loud-moth neighbor who was pulling another 360 with a 2WD John Deere of about the same hp. He kept going on about how his JD could our pull our Case. We invited him to hook onto our 360 and show us but he never did. We had our discs hard surfaced and they penetrated where his just packed. ;)
When it slows down so much, you must have two feelings: it might stall out completely, and it's good to be breaking up that hard spot. That looks like a lot of fun though.
The old IRON HORSES!!! Pretty awesome a 40 year old tractor still can get the job done…my question is…will these newer tractors still be viable and doing what they’re doing now, 40 years from now? Beautiful new tillage piece you guys got. A lot on how a chisel pulls is what you’re running for points. We run a 9 shank JD 714 mulch tiller w/4” concaved twisted shovels and that makes our 200hp mfwd JD 8300 work…dualed and weighted up!
Never doubted it. I grew up running a 4440, you throw those axle duals on the rear, kick in the posi-track, and go. We had an older 11-shank chiselplow and we'd hook a 12-foot disc behind the plow. You couldn't go as deep as you could without the disc, but we could till up and smooth out in one pass. The 40-series was some of the best of what they called the Iron Horses out of Deere.
I say let her eat, she's a workhorse. 82 would be nice for hills and less ideal field conditions, but you have options at least. Good to see tillage getting done.
It looked like it handled it pretty good. Are you running with fluid in your rear tires? If so,do you think it is helping you enough to justify the cost? I grew up on a dairy farm in Idaho, I have been out of farming for over 42 years. Things have really changed and more expensive.
No problem. Working old iron like this back in the 70's was normal. We used to pull 8/16" plows with 4520 and 4620 2wd's back then. Heavily weighted using on land hitches. Plowed 1k's of acres like that.
Everyone must've forgot there was a time when we farmed with strictly 2wd tractors. I still do to this day and I get along just fine. Granted I'm in a notill/striptill situation but I used to pull a 9 shank 714 deere with a 4430.
Duels make the difference. If you where running singles then you would have done well to get very far at all. Never underestimate how well a 2wd tractor with duels setup for traction will do. Don’t be afraid to make the engine work. Tractor engines are better designed for it
We had a 21 foot kuhn one pass we were demoing and all our other tractors were put so I had to put pur 4455 on it and let me tell u on hills it was in 4 wheel drive spinning the whole time
@@williamcorleu5839 I have 4240. Came to farm brand new. It doesn't have enough power to hurt itself but is great tractor. Over 12,000 hours. Normal maintenance stuff.
Nice to know it could do it as a backup though. Cleaned out the cobwebs as well 😊 great stuff and nice drone shots. Stay safe 🏴. Ps. Check that drawbar mounting bolts now 😳😊
You must have pretty light soil. We pull a 7 shank disk chisel in NW Iowa with a 4640 and there is a lot of slipping in b1 at 7-8 inches deep. Like you said at the beginning we have the power but not the traction. But our ground is pretty heavy.
that tractor has the power and did a wonderful job. the 46 is a bit lighter than the other one. 46 has no front diff and a double set of tires. My bet is that the 46 was also cheaper on fuel than the other one will be. don't give up on that 46 so fast. make sure all liquids are up especially trans and coolant. I would rather use that tractor as it does the job. like your farm.
How hot is it running? If your not in the red your fine. Did you check coolant level ? Is the radiator full of trash? I think the 4640 is pulling it like a champ. It does seem like your going pretty fast, it doesn't hurt to slow it down.
Hi Ryan. I watch a lot of your videos, & am a subscriber. I believe that I told you before, that I have a JD 3020, a small square bailer (makes about 60 lbs. bales), a 5 ft. old rotary cutter, & a 12 ft. disks. I have watched you using your 4640, & have seen some online. My children are all grown & gone, I am probably (your fathers age) & I don't have horses anymore & am thinking about selling hay, for a little extra income. My question to you is; since I only have 20 acres, do you think that a 4640 is too much for my 20 acres ?
Heck we used to pull a 6 bottom with a 4630 weighted to the gills, Pulled it fine. That chisel is nothing. Little more weight on the front and possibly some cast in the outer duals and a hitch adjustment on the chisel it'll pull like a dream
I figured it would pull the implement but struggle more then it did. Hopefully finances will allow you to get another MFWD tractor in the near future, so you don't have to rely on the 8235R so much. A 4960, 8400 or 8410 would be a good choice if you could find one in good condition without an extremely high price tag.
We have a John Deere 8260r our 8345r went down so we tried to pull our 5 shank disk riper with our 8260r and it just sat and spun I honestly didn’t even think you would have gotten the tractor to move on that land saver

Ryan, I have a 3020, that has 75 horse-power. I looked up your 4640, and that tells me, that a 4740 has 132.44 horse-powre, on the draw-bar. Dividing 132.44 by 2, gives a figure of 66.22 horse-power. i firmly believe that if it was done int he old days with 2wd old iron 2wd old iron can still do it today
For a simple hard pulling old tractor the JD8400 gets the job done. Mine oldie 4640 & "4850 mfd" took a trip to Mexico in 2000.
